Cemeteries, Graveyards, Horrible History, the murky & macabre . . .
Edenfield Parish Churchyard, Ramsbottom, Bury
The early church records were lost in a fire, but it is thought to date back to 1614. The surrounding graveyard holds a wealth of information etched into its many stones. Those of you who follow me know how much I love 18th century stones and this burial ground didn’t disappoint, even though the sat nav sent me to three different locations before I finally found it!

Visit the churchyard of St Mary, Kirkby Lonsdale with Deborah Contessa
มุมมอง 117วันที่ผ่านมา
In the quiet churchyard of St Mary’s in Kirkby Lonsdale lie ten remarkable monuments, each a relic of history, all honoured with Grade II listings. The weathered stones, aged by centuries, tell stories of lives long past, marked by the elegance and symbolism typical of 18th-century gravestones - a time when funerary art held a distinct gravitas that I find utterly captivating. To the east of th...
CHURCHYARD OF ST MARY THE VIRGIN, INGLETON
มุมมอง 11221 วันที่ผ่านมา
Ingleton is a village nestled in the Yorkshire Dales. Many of the oldest gravestones, which once lay within the walls of the church itself, have since been moved to the perimeter of the burial ground. These early graves, some dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, were relocated during renovations and expansions of the church. Weathered by time, their inscriptions have become faint, yet th...

The charming churchyard of St Mary and All Saints in Whalley, Lancashire, is a treasure trove of history. Here, you’ll find ancient stone coffins, three remarkable Saxon crosses, and gravestones that date back as far as the early 1600s. Wandering through the grounds, it’s easy to feel a connection to centuries past, with the Saxon crosses-believed to be over a thousand years old-standing as sil...

The church’s origins stretch back to the 15th century, with the lower tower standing as the oldest surviving feature. Over the years, several additions and restorations have been made, adding layers of history to this cherished site. Within its grounds rest 18th-century graves, markers of a bygone era that anchor this place firmly in time. This is not merely a site of architectural significance...

At the heart of the Bolton Abbey Estate, you'll find the Priory Church and the hauntingly beautiful ruins of an Augustinian Priory, nestled in a serene riverside setting. This historic site was generously gifted to the Augustinian canons by Alice de Rumilly in 1154. For centuries, the canons lived and worshipped here until the Priory was stripped of its assets during the dissolution of the mona...
Church of the Good Shepherd Tatham Fells, a churchyard wander
มุมมอง 302 หลายเดือนก่อน
There has been a church in Tatham Fells on this site since at least 1577 and possibly considerably earlier. It was built as a chapel of ease to the church in Lower Tatham and seems to have lasted until 1738 when it was found to be in a ruinous state, so was taken down and rebuilt. The oldest gravestones I could find were 18th century.

St Leonard's Church in Chapel-le-Dale, Yorkshire, is a small yet historically rich structure nestled within the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. Despite its modest size, this church has been a vital part of the local community for centuries. Angel Meadow and St Michael’s Flags, Manchester’s former slums, with Deborah Contessa

Angel Meadow was a notorious slum area in Manchester, England, during the 19th century. Located near the city’s center, it became infamous for its extreme poverty, overcrowding, and harsh living conditions. Despite its name, Angel Meadow was anything but heavenly; it was one of the most squalid and dangerous parts of Manchester during the Industrial Revolution. Angel Meadow has since been redev...

Lovely church in the beautiful village of Brookhouse. In the west wall of the north aisle is a blocked Norman doorway containing a tympanum carved with human figures. It is filled in with coffin lids and medieval cross slabs. A variety of interesting graves from various years surround the building.

High upon Saddleworth moor you will find St Thomas' Church, Friarmere (also known as Heights Chapel) The church was built in 1765 to serve a growing local population , but is now redundant. The extensive churchyard contains many graves from the 1700’s and to my delight I spotted a few touches of folksy memento mori.

A church dedicated to St. Mary has existed on the present site since Saxon times - more than 1000 years. I've lived in Churchtown my whole life, nice to see people appreciating the historical churchyard. Before the Christian church that was built here by Irish missionaries, there used to be a pagan place of worship, this is characterised by the still remaining circular slightly raised shape of the graveyard itself :)
@@Crookedowen it’s my favorite churchyard in the whole of Lancashire.
My ancestors are buried there, 4 generations in one grave, Thomas Morres ( the surname changed spelling in the next generation) died 1699, John Morris died 1745, Andrew Morris died 1760 and Obadiah ( no dares on the gravestone) its laying flat. They lived at Morris house farm, Brooke farm, now on the edge of the reservoir, which wasnt there then of course. Each of the Morris men were church wardens in their time. John Morris married a Horrobin lass, The church sits on Horrobin road. They were sheep farmers. They were from Anglosarke ( changed spellings many times) which was a settlement of the vikings, Anglesarke means Anlafs hill sheil/ pasture.
@@alisoncauser2955 thank you for your reply. It’s one of the nicest churchyards I’ve ever encountered- and I’ve been in a few!

Some old Graves Deborah, why do they lay them flat ? And side by side like that ? 😊
@@johnosgraveyardjaunts2235 often, they are laid down before they fall down. Many old gravestones are set down flat (often to form a walkway) where they are sadly no longer marking the actual burial site.
