Cemeteries, Graveyards, Horrible History, the murky & macabre . . .
Emmanuel, Holcombe churchyard
In the seventeenth century, a chapel stood on the site of the present church. Measuring just 50 by 24 feet, it was later enlarged in 1774.
The chapel once stood near the south-west corner of today’s church, its foundations now lost to time. Beyond the churchyard wall, at the crest of the adjacent field, stood the rectory-a quiet sentinel overlooking the sacred ground. Scattered throughout the churchyard, beautifully weathered 18th-century graves add to the site’s rich sense of history.

St Leonard’s Churchyard, Old Langho, Lancashire A rare church from the reign of Queen Mary I The Old Church at Langho was completed in 1557, making it a true rarity, as very few churches were constructed during the reign of Mary I (1516-1558). While I was fortunate to come across a few graves dating back to the 1700s, it is the Brockhall Hospital cemetery section, with its unmarked interments o...
Rochdale Parish Church, St Chads UK, with The Cemetery Lady
มุมมอง 13421 วันที่ผ่านมา
There has been a church on the hill overlooking Rochdale Town Centre for well over 1,000 years. Parts of the present church tower have been dated to Saxon times. The town stocks, which date back to 1688, can be found in the grounds, while the grave of the Lancashire dialect poet Tim Bobbin (John Collier of Milnrow) lies in the churchyard. If you look closely at the weathered old stones forming ...

Ormskirk Parish Church is a prominent landmark, perched atop a rugged rock outcrop approximately 80 metres above the South-West Lancashire Plain. This elevated position not only offers commanding views of the surrounding area but also hints at the church’s enduring significance over the centuries. The oldest surviving parts of the building date back to the Norman period (no later than 1189), th...

The churchyard of St. Wilfrid’s, Standish, Wigan with Deborah Contessa

The churchyard of St. Wilfrid’s, Standish was such a pleasant surprise. I knew I was in for a treat with the market cross and medieval stocks just outside the grounds, but I wasn’t prepared for the wealth of 18th-century gravestones within! To my delight, I even discovered, not one but two, dating back to the 17th century-a true gem amidst the history.

South of the church stands an ancient archway crowned by the weathered remains of a medieval stone cross, a silent sentinel of centuries past. Within the churchyard lies the grave of General Sir James Yorke Scarlett, who died in 1871. Renowned for commanding the fabled charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War, his legacy rests here in solemn dignity. Scatter...

At first glance, the burial ground of St Peter’s, Bolton-le-Moors might seem devoid of detail, but a closer look reveals a rich tapestry of history spanning centuries. Amongst the gravestones are markers from the 16th and 17th centuries, some bearing vivid accounts of lives shaped by war, faith, and upheaval. For instance, the tomb of John Oakley recalls tumultuous times, describing 13 years of...

The early church records were lost in a fire, but it is thought to date back to 1614. The surrounding graveyard holds a wealth of information etched into its many stones. Those of you who follow me know how much I love 18th century stones and this burial ground didn’t disappoint, even though the sat nav sent me to three different locations before I finally found it!

In the quiet churchyard of St Mary’s in Kirkby Lonsdale lie ten remarkable monuments, each a relic of history, all honoured with Grade II listings. The weathered stones, aged by centuries, tell stories of lives long past, marked by the elegance and symbolism typical of 18th-century gravestones - a time when funerary art held a distinct gravitas that I find utterly captivating. To the east of th...

Ingleton is a village nestled in the Yorkshire Dales. Many of the oldest gravestones, which once lay within the walls of the church itself, have since been moved to the perimeter of the burial ground. These early graves, some dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, were relocated during renovations and expansions of the church. Weathered by time, their inscriptions have become faint, yet th...
