High Powered ARLISS flights at XPRS at Black Rock canyon and recovering rocket on Friday the 13th
On Thursday, Jake launched the L motor with no payload to check if systems are go before launching the Ryan's rover. Although it tested fine on the bench, the Stratologger stopped working and the backup saved the rocket. The chute was damaged but otherwise the rocket was fine. Jake went to buy a replacement from the vendor. As he returned with the replacement, the old device started beeping, probably as a last ditch effort to save itself from the scrap heap, but it was too late.
The M motor was the coup de grâce. It looks like the charge blew out the side the rocket. The rover deployed, but the chute ziptie broke and the rover freefell to the ground. As Jake and Gavin drove back to get a shovel, they spotted the rover and retrieved the wreckage.
In my last video, I launched t he EZ-DD twice. For the first launch, I couldn't find the video so including it here. I used the full charge, but this blew out the nose cone aft and fell to the ground. I used a half charge with the second flight.

High Power Rocket night launches plus day three and four at XPRS in the Black Rock desert

Following the Wednesday dust storm during ARLISS/XPRS, the weather was clear with moderate winds. We took advantage of the conditions and launched six rockets. We left my sister and her husband in their trailer at the Pyramid Lake RV resort and took their truck to the playa along with the tent and camping supplies. Unfortunately, we left two rockets behind (Eradicator and Desert Rat), so they w...

We arrived on Sunday the 8th to help set up for the ARLISS competition at Black Rock (about 10 miles north of the Burning Man site). My sister and her husband picked my son and I from the Reno airport, and we stayed in their trailer through Tuesday. The Greens provided us with a large tent and air mattresses. We then bugged out to wait out the Wednesday wind storm at a nearby fishing lake resor...

Several things went wrong this day. First of all, there was a tropical storm slamming into Big Island which deterred most people from attending, so there was just a few of us. The winds were 10 to 15 mph with the occasional gust. It was fine as long as we waited to launch until the winds calmed down. I was determined to try out my new Nike Smoke PSII. I had originally ordered it, and USPS decid...

Before NARAM, I ordered three H115DM motors from Bill at BMS that I picked up at the ranch. I was hoping for the Pre-order price but gave me the Ship now price. At the field, I bought the G75M motor from Bill. I was hoping for the Ship now price but instead got the List price. At least he didn't charge me tax. It's all good, and all four motors worked great. Model Rockets: July 4th night time and Blaisdell Park launches with Joe from Hobbyco

Invited Joe from the LHS to launch at night. The Park added more lighting along the buildings (probably to discourage campers on the sidewalk) so don't really need to turn on the field lights. The fireworks aren't as crazy as they are on NYE. For the Loadstar and Phantom Blue, we placed Snapits on the pad base, some of them ignited but most just scattered. Microsoft HEVC is broken in RaceRender

For the past couple months, the HEVC codec doesn't work in older programs like RaceRender. Apparently, Microsoft updated their extension through their Store. Many programs are no longer recognizing the codec, even though you have to pay $1 for the codec in the Store. I've been having an issue with the Eggtimer Ion not matching the flight video. This one was spot on. I'm not sure if it's because...

Excellent Ron and Christopher!! 🚀 🚀
You really shouldn’t be using the thin 1/8” Estes rubber shock cords in HPR!!! 😂 Looks like you and Christopher are truly enjoying this hobby more and more as time passes!
Thermonuclear meltdown...
Congrats to you and Christopher! Some tough luck there on some of those flights, but overall a fun looking event. Those JLCR releases always get my anxiety level up a bit, but alls well that ends well. 😉
There were some windy days so the JLCR helped.
I'm wondering how much energy is wasted in those sparkly engines, just making pretty sparks instead of adding to the thrust.
About 20% plus harder to ignite. Can't ship them to Hawaii without hazmat fee so gotta launch them when I can on the mainland.
Awesome launches. Looked like a good time.
So, for sure congrats to Christopher on Level 1. Who gets congrats for Level 2? Or is it a go back to the drawing board event? Or, did I miss it?
The first video is of the later Level 2 Certs drag race. Both were successful. Thanks for watching.
@@RonzRocketz I see. I did sort of miss it, lol. Reading your written description of issues had me wondering. Congratulations to the two of you!!!
Great video like always here. Actually just discovered that you have good write ups on your videos too - appreciated!
Much appreciated.
Awesome video! Really enjoyed watching the launches. Thanks for the write up too - you guys had a special outing for sure. I have never been in a sand storm!
Awesome flights as usual.
Thanks for watching.
What camera are you using to collect the onboard footage? It looks really good!
I ordered two more. Can take several weeks to ship from China. www.rocketryforum.com/threads/car-keychain-32s-lens-a-key-ring-mini-cam-micro-camera-1080p-sports-camcorder.176183/
Nice day of rocketeering!! That Mustang engine puffing is far more dangerous than any Estes engine CATO!!
Could the Rocket tecnetly glide back to the Ground with its wings?
It'll probably glide for a bit but the landing would be rough.
Cool Ron!
You took the wrong trail. 20th main did not charge down big round sorry to tell you this.
Thanks. I figured that out. Couldn't find the Little Round Top trail.
Great flights. Thanks for posting. I built a estes V2 and also launched on a C6-3, and it did the exact samr thing. Ill retry with a D engine as per the recommendations.
WAS the Rocket alright? It looked like a engine fail
It's fine. All I did was tape the booster motor to the rocket motor. The booster motor Cato'd but still lit the rocket motor which didn't Cato so was a successful Chad Cato booster launch.
@@RonzRocketz Ok ;)
Tell me about the race render stuff. Does it get its data from an altimeter or chute release? Maybe you could do a short video about it?
I've been thinking about it, maybe for vNARCON. I usually use the Eggtimer Ion data.
Who was the guy talking about the egg timer dual deploy kit? I am curious about engine "bags". This does not sound as secure as the blister packs. What engines were recalled? E22 and what else? What was the average age of rocketeers attending this? Thanks for sharing this. It's a long watch, but well worth it to keep up with what is going on/coming.
I missed the intro while paying for my auction rockets. I think he's Bill from BMS. I bought motors from BMS in the field, but he was covered up. Estes is going from the motor blister packs to bags. I haven't seen them yet except in photos. The big deal is that E motors should be mailable without hazmat from estesrockets.com with two motors per bag. From the start, the recall was only D12 but seems to have been expanded to C11. estesrockets.com/pages/d12-engine-service-bulletin I wondered about the average age. I'd say about 65 since traveling to NARAM requires time off from work and disposable income. It just happened to be that my wife was attending a conference in Denver at the same time. There was about 100 attending the auction at 6pm and only about 40 for the forum at 7pm. There seemed to be a lot younger people at the auction.
Yes, Bill. Here's Tim's video. th-cam.com/video/ggyu0h6SGso/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QO0LXGjdVcDJkU2g
Looked like lots of fun!! Thanks again for sharing video!
Thank you for this video, Ron. I really appreciate that you filmed it and put it on your channel… Exciting stuff!!!
When did Estes say the Athena will be available?
Not sure. Hopefully before Tim releases his Nike Hercules. (kidding)
@@RonzRocketz I’ll take both 😬😎
Steve Lubliner is on our club’s board! Southern Arizona Rocketry Association…! Excellent…..
Hey, I saw both of these flights live on Saturday morning (I mean your Leviathan and the Bounty Hunter). I have been a big fan of your TH-cam channel, but did not realize that it was you! I was volunteering during the BH flight at the Sport Range and now that I see your picture, I am sure that we chatted a bit. Been meaning to ask for a long time but haven't -- what altimeter do you use to record your flights so that you can transfer data to Race Render? I really like your on-board videos with the altitude and speed dials . . . just curious how you record the data. I also launched a Leviathan Saturday morning with a camera but only on an F67. Anyhow, cool videos and I hope you enjoyed NARAM! I only launched on Saturday and went to the Estes tour on Sunday as there is only so much rocketry that my wife will put up with. As always, though, we enjoyed the Colorado scenery the rest of the time.
LOL My wife can only stand a couple hours herself. I've been thinking of creating a video to vNARCON. I use the data from the Eggtimer Ion (or Flightsketch but don't have anymore). It's not easy with RaceRender. I add the video and trim the video to 3sec before liftoff and after touchdown. I add the CSV data and designate the time, altitude, and speed. With the side by side, I unlink, then compare the altitude graph to the video to link. If I'm just using an Estes altimeter, then I create the data in Excel to simulate and save as CSV file. You can reach me at 8083489977 for more information. Mahalo.
The leviathan landed pretty close for as windy as it was. Awesome flights
I angled it a bit. I was worried it would end up in the trees but fell short.
Heard Lost referance pressed like
Not buying that “successfully recovered So Long” bs… 😂😂😂 (I’m just jelly, bro. Someday, soon!!)
Believe me, saw it with my own eyes. I suspect this is the same field that Boren demonstrated to Mallory and agreed to keep the name. Maybe it only returns at this one field?
@@RonzRocketz 😂😂😂 I believe you. Just in denial…!
What I meant is that I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. 😀 He said he has several with the understanding it probably won't come back.
@@RonzRocketz Oh, gotcha! 😂 That makes sense….
I miss CO rocketry.
Cool! Looking forward to Tim's Hercules:)
Great launches!! You really get around, don't you!
It's always better to make it to third base.😂😂
Nice. I love those metalstorm engines.
I'm not able to ship the sparkies to Hawaii without hazmat, so I have to take advantage of launching them when I can on the mainland.
What's the rocket in the intro?

Great fun! It was nice to have the gang back together last Sunday!
Good to see ya.

Cool stuff, the night flights where outstanding too. Hey frens I return subs.
Nice, I knew someone had to launch on July 4th!! Thanks for posting!
It's the patriotic thing to do. 😃
Awesome launches. Looks like you were blessed with a little to no wind day. Happy to see that 😀. You guys usually have some wind when you are launching.
It's weird. The winds were less than forecasted which is rare.
I was wondering if you all launched on July 4th this year! Looked for a live feed to watch the launches and hear the insane amount of fireworks set off in yer neck o’ the woods…!
I'm using my cell phone now to record so not available for livestreaming. It was too cumbersome to capture the live stream. I'm using my handcam to record the wide view.
I bring helium balloons and kite string. Run a couple balloons out to 60 to 80 ft and use wind direction to gage the tilt on the launch rod.
You visit the party store before the launch? I guess I would need to buy it the day before.
Where did you find the mercury capsule for the BT80. That’s a nice one.
Boyce Aerospace. They're having a July 4th sale now. I bought the printed fin can because I was tired of the fins breaking off the Estes model.
Green green green 🤣🤣🤣
I don't have any rockets of this size so I love watching your launches.
if you launched Puck, that would have found the Moon!
I really appreciate how you arranged for the moon to accompany each flight! 😎 Was Christopher’s rocket long lost or recovered right after the flight? It looked like it had been buried for a while….
Once again a Great video. Thank you and keep it up.
