Sail out of a garage
Sweden
This Channel is about building boats in a garage and sailing the same. My garage is 5.7 m long so it is small boats that are great starting projects for a new builder. My ambition is to produce usable boats, not necessary show off pieces although it is fun to get recognision when out sailing. So far I have built four boats although only two are shown on this channel. My current project is a camping catamaran. To be available for a larger audience I try to communicate in English although you may have to excuse my imperfection.

Kayak sailing through winter sea to Björns lighthouse #310
In this episode I take the kayak up to northern Uppland. I start at Fågelsundet and sail out through the rocky and shallow waters. The ice stops me from taking the protected way through the narrow passages. I have to sail around on the open sea to reach Björns Fyr. On the way back the sun sets and I have to navigate through ice and rocks in darkness before I reach the beach.

In this episode I take the kayak down to the beach of lake Uttran. The first snow is resting on the shore as I climb down in to the ice cold water. The ice is tough and has a lot of interesting shapes that I explore. Please join me on this ice fascination tour. The ice on the thumb nail picture could be from gas evaporating from the water and leaving a porous ice hump looking like snow.

Nice! I need a suite like yours so I can go out in the winter too. What kind of suite is that and how thick is it? Very good example of custom rig and outriggers on a kayak. I assume the outriggers pivot so that you can pull the akas in?
@@markpalmquist The suite is nothing special but you can find it here www.sandiline.com/en/shop/kayak/kayak-dry-suits/rescue-dry-suit#. The most important for staying warm is to put plenty of wool layers under the suite.
@@markpalmquist The outriggers and mast pivote around a central axis. This makes it posible to sail in 36 knots of wind (I have tried) as exess wind power is spilled when the mast leans and the pontoons go down under water without the kayak doing the same. The arrangement also helps with keeping the kayak up against the wind as the pontoons are formed as wings.
@@sailoutofagarage6212 that is pretty cool, the outrigger and sail heel but your kayak stays upright.
@@markpalmquist Yes it stays level and it feels safe in strong winds and rather large waves. The joining between the two hull parts is also very robust and with two persons in the kayak it doesn't flex at all.
Amazing ,thank you for this video
@@betulegi8931 I'm so glad that you liked it and left a comment.
Isn't that a canoe
@@justinjuarez1852 Depends on how you define it. To me this is a kayak.
Use a nail or so and punch some holes into the grove of the can, so that the hardener can drip down and the can is still properly saled if the lid is on (depends on the can, cant see it in the video how the rim is made)
@@hix420 Thank you for the sugestion. The seal on the can will be broken but for a shorter time (weeks) this shold not be a problem.
The hull has a good looking shape to it. All the little steps add up to the end result. I have a plywood catamaran that has the same crossbeam attachment you are using and it works well. Im interested in how you attach the base of the mast to the center of the beam, as that is where all the stress is. I rebuilt my beams using an oak, pine sandwich with an oak mast step in the shape of a box. I had 2 people, supplies and extra space for more on a 16 foot cat.
@@zackariasthepirate I haven't come to that construction part yet on this build but you could look in the playlist for another catamaran that I made, th-cam.com/play/PLX8LJx74CkuKW8XOa8iFlpvTWhDVDHjUC.html&si=FhT3qMS8GdVZ1T24. However, there are at least two different strategies to take on this problem. Either, you could build the mast step as strong as possible and hope that no stay ever breaks, like a hinge. If any stay break the whole boat may disintegrate when the hinge breaks loose. Or, you could construct something that will fail in a controlled manner, like a mast pin.
I don't complain about the camera work. You took the effort to fiddle yourself, the brush, the glass AND the cam into that hatch 💪
@@hix420 Thank you!
Really great explanation. I have a flat tarp sail for my sailing canoe that does a terrible job. I want to change the sail setup and this will be a useful guide. Can I ask, where did you get the numbers to calculate the curve in the "belly" of the sail?
@@leemelbourne3297 Thank you! I used the circle equations found in most mathemathical books. You shold look up the equation for the cord in relation to the circumference. I recomend going for a flatter sail than you think. Mine got a too much of a belly to work well in strong winds.
@@leemelbourne3297 I can't find the formula (long time ago) but an approximation is to use b=2(h*h+(C/2)*(C/2))0.5 where b is the cloth lenght, h is the belly depth and C is the chord.

Yes I can recommend Sketchup for boat projects. It is rather powerful to get a 3D feel for the project and also for measuring individual distances in the modell. However, if you want to export 2D-data like bulkheads you have to pay. The free version doesn't allow you to do that. I had to work around that problem and set up an offset table in an Excel spreadsheet.
@@sailoutofagarage6212 Ah, verstehe. Hast Du mal "professionelle" Bootsdesignsoftware ausprobiert?
Not yet. However, if you keep it simple and basic you can actually get rather far. A book on the subject with this approach is "How to design a boat" by John Teale. I ended up using an Excel spreadsheet for the calculations and SketchUp for visualisation.
Great video. I liked seeing the different places. Hoped you would have a.bit of friendly wind but you made it fine.
@@JenkinsBoatWorks Thank you! Yes it was tail wind on the first leg and the head wind didn't bother so much as it's so easy to take down the mast and sail. With two people working together things go much faster.

Thanks for sharing 👍 What wood are you using to cut your strips from?
Here I use spruce as it has the best ratio between strength and weight. I want to build lightweight as that is important for any catamaran and especially for a roof rack transportable one.
As we say in Japan, 頑張って下さい!💪 (perhaps a bit more filler when gluing compared to laying glass would help. Think peanut paste/nutella)

Nice to sail in waters with lots of rescue boats around. Here in Brazil, we need internal buoyancy to right the boat ourselves, after capsizing. Hundreds of Km without help.😮😊

what's the model of your sawing machine? is it a household or industrial one?

What brand of epoxy are you using and where to buy?
I use NM epoxy (mostly) and sometimes Biltemas epoxy (when I haven't ordered in time). If you are not based in Sweden or the nordic countries I suggest that you try to find a local supplier. NM epoxy is available through their web shop (epoxibutiken.se/)
Hello! I really appreciate your videos, because I am planning to build a small 16ft trimaran. Great inspiration! What type of wood are you using to strip plank the hulls? Seems to be spruce. I wonder how it behaves in general (especially because there are lots of knots and crooked fibers in it) and how it binds with epoxy
@@hix420 Yes it's spruce. The knots and crooked fibers are only a problem (strength) if you build something dependent on only that strip. If you don't position the knots on the same location for strips besides each other the hull will be plenty strong. In fact spruce has it's qualities: it doesn't generate toxic dust (like Western red ceder), it's one of the toughtest and has the highest strenth weight ratios you can find. It binds very well with epoxy and as it doesn't soack in to much epoxy you can build very light laminates with it.

Wow, canoe sails so well. Why were these ships on this lake? Some trading or fishing or? You might need a head net to ward off the mosquitos etc. this year there are more than usual here in Finland. Thanks also for great aerial shots by your drone. Looks like good fishing
Thank you! The ships were used for transports and when they got old they just let them rot in a bay until they sank. The mosquitos were bad this trip but now it's much better. I will visit Finland next week, I hope you have cleared the sky until then? 😉 Yes fishing is popular in this area, and you do not need a permit in the big lakes.
If you take plastic strapping, coat it with packing tape, that allows you can staple through that and pull the strapping. It’s much faster with no dents. I’ve been following your progress with great interest.
Thank you for commenting and the support! Yes I agree there are numerous ways to improve the surface, I have tried a few. Plastic strapping will definitely be a good option. In this case I do not care so much about the hull surface as I plan to paint it, not varnish, thus I went with a quick and dirty approach.

I don't understand the benefit of the roller with the grooves along the roller instead of around the roller.
With the grooves along the roller (orthogonal) you push the air out of the cloth as you roll. If you had the grooves around the roller the air would stay. I hope this makes sense?
@@sailoutofagarage6212 No not at all to be honest. I used the other (non orthogonal) rollers for years building boats and never had a problem. All they were is round nylon stock with a deep thread. Anyhow very interesting and good luck with your build.
@@jollyroger7624 Aha, now I understand your argument. Yes it will work with a standard roller as well. The orthoganal roller is however much easier to clean, just wipe with a papper tissue. A standard roller will have to be thrown away.
@@sailoutofagarage6212 I see where you are coming from, but I should have mentioned I was laminating with polyester resin not epoxy. I did however coat a 34 foot steel deep keel yacht hull with epoxy 50 odd years ago, that was fun working outdoors. We did however use plenty of solvents for cleaning our equipment. I still have my rollers. More important I think to keep the glass dust out of your lungs than anything else.
Polyester is another thing, cheap(er) but I don't like that it's water degradable on a boat, thus I stick to epoxy. Yes I also think the glass dust is the most dangerous, at least long term. Unhardened epoxy is also not good but that is more acute toxic.
Great points for the build! Im definitely making one this year.
