Sleepy Folklore! Sleep through Tony Walker's meanderings and end up at the Shipping Forecast. This week we look at customs around May 13, 'Old May Day' (and thus the one we're sticking to). Have you read Boneland, Tony? (2012), by Alan Garner, it is an interesting read, it follows Colin’s exploits in later life and is interwoven with Garner’s themes of sense of place and individual human relationships with the land, mystical understanding of time, place and his love of archaeology and prehistory. Disappointingly for me it did not answer questions about what happened between Susan and Atlendor after the battle with the Morrigan in Moon of Gomrath, shades of my 12 year old self, I’m afraid, 😂 and introduced further questions regarding Gowther, Bess and the fate of Highmost Redmanhey … but a cracking read for all that.

I was born and bred in Skipton. I was married in Bolton Abbey in 1980 to a local girl whose family were tenant farmers on the Bolton Abbey Estate. Few of the locals liked the Duke, and especially the then Duchess, of Devonshire for their attitude towards their tenants. The Duke's and Duchess's main interest was in their property at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. However, it was common knowledge amongst the locals that ghosts were often seen in and around Bolton Abbey Priory itself. They were often seen carrying casks (of beer) across the road to the cellars. I certainly would NEVER have spent a night in the church as this was well-known to be haunted. I did regularly drive down the road past the Abbey late at night on my way home from my (then) girlfriend's parent's house in the hope of seeing a ghost - but never did. A spoke to one local lady who was quite taken aback that I should question whether ghosts had been seen ... !!! These people were salt of the Earth Yorkshire folk who called a spade and spade and would never consider exaggeration or fabrication. I remember a TV programme was made in the 1970s (I think) which interviewed the then rector who related that he had seen ghosts near the Priory who 'floated' about a foot above the ground - explained by the fact that the ground levels had changed over the years. It has been interesting to listen to your video because it brought back memories of those years I spent in the area and especially at Hazelwood where my wife's parent's farm was located. I've just checked Google Maps and it appears the farm house has been renovated and converted into a house.

Interesting.. the Hotwells house I know of was might have been before the one you are talking about g about as it’s normally called the old Hotwells house. This was on the banks of the river Avon and was actually on Hotwells point, that’s long gone.. they needed to make the river more navigable over the years so the river changed slightly. But the area is in between the suspension bridge and the lock gates.. as for the Highwayman from Cornwall. The Pill Sharks wouldn’t have had much of that in the area, especially if he showed up at Pill, Somerset which is 5 miles downstream.. the Pill men were the only ones who were skilled enough to pilot the ships up to Bristol and Pill basically held Bristol to ransom over hundreds of years which Bristol hated.. it caused lots of fighting over the years!⚓️🦈

Interesting story. I agree with you that peoples' brains work differently and some of us can see, hear, and smell things that others of us in the same room or place, cannot. At present there is so very little known about how the human brain works but one day scientists may discover the reason for this. Maybe there is some part of our brain that can detect other plains of existence whilst awake and conscious but for most of us it lies dormant and we can only access it during our dreams.

Love the part about meat-eating, plants and animals' feelings etc. I myself was a vegetarian for over 10 years, but I no longer am. I still don't buy red meat and only eat it if someone was to present me with it as a meal. My reason for not eating was I didn't want to eat another animal's ‘fear’. Fear is frozen in the body on death. Especially in the course of factory farming and abattoir culling. When animals sense death therefore are filled with fear and adrenaline. There is already too much ‘fear within the world, the world is run on ‘fear.’, fear of the alternative. Decisions and solutions are made on the ‘fear’ of what may occur if not. .. in fact, I was a Pescatarian, I ate fish. The majority of fish is not farmed and fishermen have to toil at sea, sometimes for days, weeks on end. Risking their lives daily to help feed and shelter their own families, sometimes without reward.

Just a wee thought for your ref. I wonder if you have any knowledge of Steeleye Span, folk/rock group from the 70s, they have many songs that hold many little snippets of history & folk tales, legends & common practices & customs. "Gamble Gold & Robinhood" came to mind, but "Bonnie Boys of Bedlam", "Long Lankin" (The story of a builder who didn't get paid for the house so he brutally killed the wife & child whilst the master was away), Also the festive songs describing traditions such as The bird taken from house to house representing the King, "Soul cakes" among many others. Loving all your explorations here as I am currently very unwell & often sleep very little at night. PS loved the reading of "Velvet Green in one of these sessions... As a singer I experience the world largely through song, such a rich way to share the traditions & ways. Love if you could find some "Selky" stories, there are so many wonderful songs about them? Thanks as always, very grateful.

I noticed your use of the word Kaylied, haven't heard it for years, so this sent me down a rabbit hole of the etymology of the word.
