Herring compact palettes - Whole pan and Half pan models
I've used these palettes for over 10 years and really like the compact design and terrific mixing areas. They are very flexible in the way you can set them up with space for a brush or pencil, or for more colours with a couple of little 'hacks'.
I use the Half-pan model for my travel sketching palette and the Whole-pan model for my Gouache palette.
I've written about it in my blog janeblundellart.blogspot.com/2013/11/watercolour-palettes-1-herring-palette.html and in the Palettes section of my website (under the Resources tab).

Pigmented Pens 3 - Derwent Gaphik, Faber-Castell Pitt and Copic Multiliners.
มุมมอง 4927 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the third in this series about pigmented pens. There is more information about them on my blog too, (janeblundellart.blogspot.com/2024/04/pigmented-felt-tip-pens-for-writing-and.html) with links to the various websites. There are, of course, other brands I haven't covered. Feel free to add your favourites to the comments.
Pigmented pens for writing and drawing 2 - Uni Pin pens
มุมมอง 8478 หลายเดือนก่อน
UniPin Fine Line pens come in a smaller range of colours than the Pigma Microns, but a greater range of pens sizes in black. These are a popular choice for Manga and Zentangle projects too.

I wanted to share some products that I have bought and loved from a terrific company, Galen Leather Co, who make Journalling and Writing supplies. Founded in Turkey in 2012, they started out making a simple journal cover, but have increased their range of leather, brass and wooden products to include items to appeal to anyone with a passion for writing. Sketching on location Tasmania
มุมมอง 1.3K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
I filmed a fragment of my time in Tasmania, which is the island state in the south, below the east of mainland Australia, and where I was born. I spent two weeks on holiday with another 4 people, a car and three motorbikes, exploring the fabulous winding roads and spectacular scenery. It wasn't a sketching trip - though I would love to do that one day - so I only took a small set of supplies wi...
Cleaning watercolour brushes
มุมมอง 2.2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Watercolour is very gentle on brushes, compared with other paints like oils or acrylics, but watercolour brushes still enjoy a bit of TLC every now and then. I suggest giving your watercolour brushes a proper clean and condition a couple of times a year, or perhaps once a season. All always, it depends how often you use them. You may like to give them a good clean after a painting is finished i...
16 colour sketching palette
มุมมอง 9K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
This palette has a few different names, including the 'Airtight Watercolour Palette' from Mont Marte. It is an inexpensive well-style palette, so the paint is added directly to the wells, rather than needing watercolour pans or half-pans. This gives really great brush access. I fill the wells just in the deeper end to leave room for single colour washes within each well too. I set this one up a...
Tiny silver matchbox palette
มุมมอง 1.2K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is another little palette hack - this time I started with a silver matchbox from the early 1900s. I've used the tiny pans from www.arttoolkit to fit 12 colours into the palette. I could use a sticker to create a white area for mixing - the 'Apple' product stickers work quite nicely! You can see more about palettes on my website here www.janeblundellart.com/palettes.html Please note - the s...
The daisy-like 'Aquarelle' palette
มุมมอง 2.4K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've used these palettes in many of my videos and had many questions about what they are and where they can be found. They are from Australia. Here is little more about my fellow Australian Watercolour Institute colleague, Malcolm Carver's, 'Aquarelle' palette, which is available directly through his website www.carverstudio.com. While it was created as a painting palette without any mixing are...

Creating 'Past their Prime' ink and watercolour on paper
มุมมอง 1.2K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'd drawn, etched and painted bird of paradise flowers, fresh and dried, since I was a teen. I love both the colours when fresh, and the gorgeous linear nature and earthy tones of the fried flower. This is a video showing the process I went through creating this painting/drawing on cold pressed watercolour paper, with fountain pens, waterproof ink and watercolour.
Antique silver palette hack with Daniel Smith watercolour sticks
มุมมอง 3.5K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
I create watercolour palettes using all sorts of found objects and have shown a lot of them on my website here (www.janeblundellart.com/palettes.html) I found a video I'd made a while ago of one of them that may show a little more information. I'll create others if they are helpful :-) This was a cigarette case from the early 1900s - I don't know the exact date - that works well to hold 19 (or ...

I've been teaching this course for many years in person. I created an email version about a decade ago, then,...
Focus on Blues
มุมมอง 10K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are a number of the different Blues available. I don't use very many - generally Ultramarine as a warm or purple-leaning blue; Cerulean Chromium as a cool or green-leaning blue; Phthalo Blue Green Shade or Red Shade as mixing blues; and sometimes Indanthrone Blue or the lovely granulating Primatek blues from Daniel Smith for special effects. Many I have shown here are difficult to get hol...

A very informative video. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing with us!! Very helpful!
How does leaving soap on the brush after cleaning help my brushes? Does it keep them softer, keep dust particles off & tyvm as you feel got all that paint out of your brush but once clean it in soap (Pthalo’s) oh my was I surprised. Tyvm.
I recommend this to my students , the problem is the price, that is ok when you know a little bit watercolour but beginners are often afraid to buy it….They go to dollorama….oh my god….Times spend to tell them….😢
What a beautiful book full of such useful knowledge ❤.
This is lovely and especially informative on how you use the three partitioned water container. The wash in water before you color the squares is also helpful. Thanks
Great video ❤... Which one of them would you recommend for writing? Because i only take notes and they are water proof
Hi Jane. I love your videos. Thanks for taking the time and doing a quality job. I like to paint landscapes mostly. The only green on my palette is PG7 (WN "Viridian"). I am looking at maybe replacing it with a go-to versatile green. I have a limited palette containing 14 colors including the PG7. I am considering replacing the PG7 with Jadeite as my ONLY convenience green. What are your thoughts? Also, if not Jadeite, can you recommend another go-to convenience green? Thanks so much! Cheers.
I've seen you demonstrate these before and like the deep mixing space. I hope they sell them in the U.S.
Natural ?? fibres Why choose cruelty?🥺
The long-term issues with pollution and forever plastics are also an issue when using synthetic fibres. Sadly, whatever we do has consequences. Whatever brushes we have, or choose to buy, the best thing we can do is take care of them so we make them last a long time.
I have searched for a similar triple well rising dish for 10 years, looking online at Chinese and Japanese art supplies and have never found such a rinsing dish anywhere. Can't be very traditional if its so hard to find.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you. I'm considering this set for travel, so I appreciate seeing the real-time colour swatching. I do see that pyrrol crimson has been replaced with permenant alizarin crimson. I would have preferred a single pigment switch, so that's a little disappointing. However, the set of colours are beautiful - love the earth tones! I think it'll be a great set for Italy. :)
I love they way you dont do endless rambling
Rambling while doing something is still something I can enjoy but I have seen people just sitting in front of the camera and do on and on about something not even remotely useful...😢 Anything beyond the 30min mark is rarely worth the time, unless it's a real time 'draw with me' type demo...
This is a lovely colour study, thank you so much for sharing it. I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to figure out what I want to use to set my own “working” journal up with - I haven’t even gotten a [watercolor] brush wet yet, but I love learning everything I can about my materials.
I thought about this when I saw sticks next to a filled half pan. "Wait, isn't that the same thing?"
This is the first I'm seeing Gray Titanium from Daniel Smith. It appears to be very similar to Da Vinci's Buff Titanium in hue, which I always found to be quite gray relative to other buff titaniums.
It is PW6, which is titanium white, but obviously a different version from the PW6:1 of buff titanium or the PW6 of Titanium White. I don't use it a lot as Jane's Grey mixed with Buff Titanium is similar. However it does have its own characteristics.
I just cut up an old credit card and glued into place to fill the whole thumb area. Easier cutting a rectangle than an oval! Then stuck in the pans with blue tack like you do.
Sounds great!
I love this idea ❤
Me too!
I was in tokyo recently and picked up some of their ink. They're so pretty and the bottles for the full sizes are very unique! I need to find more of a reason to use them though. I feel like I always want to watercolor over ink drawings and these smudge a bit even though the packaging said it should be water resistant
Yes there is a difference between 'waterproof' and 'water resistant'. It makes a very big difference when using watercolour. It can also vary with different papers.
Thanks for this. There were colours here I've never used (although I'm a huge fan of Daniel Smith). I also really enjoyed your information on brushes and what they're made of.
This is a lovely video and your explanation is quite nice. I believe that several people have confused this palette with the mijello offerings. The well in this palette are on the longer or thinner type. So many others are much more square shaped. I am one of those artists that do not fill the well to allow my brushes to pickup a less concentrated mixture of the color. I have recently seen a couple of videos where the paint was at the “bottom” and up one side to allow more paint into the “belly” of the brush yet still leave room for the diluted mixture of the colors.
I generally only fill half of any of these wells for exactly that purpose - to leave room for weaker or stronger washes of the colour within the colour well.
What impressive durability! I wish such deep wells were more common among watercolour palettes!
They work very well! It makes the palette thicker than some, but it's worth it as you can create fabulous mixes for large skies etc.
You are using a lovely brush. May I ask what it is?
So much good information with demonstration…thank you for sharing.😊
Glad it was helpful!
Sable brushes are the same as fur coats. Totally unnecessary cruelty in our modern world where we have choices. Winsor and newton synthetic sable does a beautiful soft wash and Princeton aqua elite long point brushes hold heaps of water and a very fine point. Modern synthetic brushes have fibres that are split and microscopically chipped more like hair shafts are. They hold water. The animals used to make brushes are often trapped in the wild. Or else kept in hellish conditions in cages with no floors, all on top of each other. Many are sk*nned alive. If you love animals, don’t wear or paint with fur. ❤
Oh and Billy Showel also ditched sable in her line of brushes but now does a really good synthetic line with some very finely pointed brushes. Though their fibres aren’t so technically good as the Winsor and newton or Princeton elite
I respect your point of view. But it isn’t quite so black-and-white when trying to be a thoughtful citizen of the world. Especially when you consider the full environmental impact of synthetic fibres. Like all plastics, they require chemicals, factories, power, water etc to manufacture and then they never decompose. They also release micro plastic into the waterways and that causes damage to other creatures. I am totally for the humane treatment of animals but IF they are to be used for fur, it is better that nothing is wasted and the tail is used for brushes. I still have natural hair brushes that are 45 years old. I also continue to test synthetic fibres looking for alternatives. Please let’s not be adamant about any particular point of view. There are always many shades of grey.
Hello Jane I was fascinated by your showing of Malcolm Carver's tiny palette. As a couple of your reviewers have indicated, this item is not available in the UK market. However, I have just ordered one from Malcolm's website at $22 (£12 sterling) with no p&p charges! Thank you so much for demonstrating this product. Although my current palette is at capacity with 33 'DS' colours, I now require a further two, following one of your tutorials on swatching the colour Green 🙂 Best wishes Gerald
Great! Glad it was helpful. Just make sure you push the lids up from the centre as they can break off if not healed carefully. There are so many fascinating greens! While I know how to mix them using yellows and blues, or greens and browns, or so many other ways, there are some that are just so useful that they are worth adding.
I have this palette and I love it for the lightweight aspect and the Mixing wells.
I totally agree!
❤ your channel. I add a drop of money to my wash when I fill my paints stirred in. This keeps it from cracking, but also keeps it from molding. Honey is a natures antifungal and anti-microbial. P.s. oh my gosh the auto dictation does not work very well. Sorry for all the edits 😊
I am cautious of honey as I've had bugs enjoy watercolour washes with honey, but I know it works well for many. I use glycine for the same purpose, if setting up palettes in some brands.
I love mine. Great plein air palettes
They certainly are.
I love how it looks, have you used one for a longer period of time? I’d imagine the paint area could get pretty messy. Never thought about putting sticks in a palette like that!
I don't tend to use it much, and when using it, I do it with care so the paint area stays clean. You need to be a tidy painter with a palette set up this way 😉
I kept looking at the stickers and thinking- why does she have a Jane Blundell sticker on them haha- then I looked down at the channel name 😅🙃
To fit the potential 32 half pans in do you need to sand the pan or do they simply drop in? I know you DID sand the palette after gluing the hole but I’m speaking specifically about the pans themselves. Thank you in advance for your answer. This was really good, I truly enjoy seeing people’s palette setups! ClaudiaSJI
No need to sand the pans at all. they fit in neatly. And you may choose to add a little blu-tac to hold them in place.
Great video thanks for your thoughts and suggestions
👋🏼
Great video. Thanks for sharing❤
This is very useful information. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I think the sable was "ruined" when they electrocuted him/her in the rectum.
Well this is exciting. Have a couple of 0.2 Copic SPs and they’re my absolute favourite, if a little heavier of line than I’d like. Included on a class materials list last year, along with Multiliners .1 and .3, I assumed (inexplicably, and proving what they say about assumptions to be true), finer nibs weren’t available. Raced over to the Blick website after this video to find a Christmas morning of sizes. Thank you Jane!
Great!! I don’t know how long the replacement will be available but great that you have found them. A couple more items being made more useful and not ending up in the dump!
Thank you for this review. I like how you are reviewing materials other than watercolours. That will come in handy for many people. Have you tried any of the Tom’s Studio pens?
I have done reviews on all sorts of materials on my blog - inks, fountain pens, pencils, sketchbooks etc etc but am gradually adding videos too. Sketchbooks next…
@@janeblundellart Thanks! Looking forward to the sketchbook reviews 😊.
I missed this video! Oh well! At least I’m still first. At the end, when all has been said and done and all the universe has come to an end, that is what really counts 😂😂.
Wonderful work:)!
Thanks a lot!
Your lettering is very neat 😊.
The colours are vibrant!
Yes - they are really lovely.
I like your swatch template. How did you make it and what is it made of?
It's plastic - nice and strong - and was made from a computer file my son created from a drawing I did. I made a number of stencils for my online courses and this is great for all sorts of swatching fun 🙂
@@janeblundellart Cool! Thanks! So was the plastic cut by a machine or dud you cut it manually? Do you just use a normal cutter?
Machine cut. I have hundreds made at a time of the four main designs. I have made them myself in the past though, and it works. Just hard to get them neat on strong enough plastic.
@@janeblundellart Thanks!
I discovered the UniPins a few weeks ago at my local art supply store. I LOVE them. I just wish the sepia came in a .8. Great visual review, thank you!
Outstanding review, I will have to try these out!
Thank you - glad it's helpful.
I enjoyed this review and was wanting a replacement for a lost scetchbook. I hope this fills the bill, awaiting arrival. ClaudiaSJI
