I so appreciate you sharing how you do the swatches. I can’t even start to tell you how invaluable I find your website. There’s a whole bunch of companies that owe you compensation for the time and effort you have invested in exhibiting their product. Now...if I could get my swatches to look as nice as yours I’d be really happy. ;-) Thanks ever so much Jane. You’re a jewel.
This video is sooooooo incredibly helpful!!! I'm just a baby beginner learning without a class or a teacher to discuss things with. I'm at the point where I'm wanting to make my own swatches and I've been searching and searching and searching for someone to show me how they actually paint the graded wash in a way that I can comprehend and emulate. I read so many books and websites (yours is so extraordinary) and I watch people's tutorials online and sometimes the really basic basic basic things are left out, like how much paint you would apply to how much water when making a graded wash and what that actually looks like in terms of what you actually physically do with your brush and your water and your paint and your paper to make it happen. This video makes it so clear! I am so grateful! I'll probably be watching it on repeat for the next several days. :D
Thank you. My goal with this channel is to include a whole series of short videos that show those basics. I have a number planned and will get back to it over the next few months.
This is amazing Jane, thank you so much for sharing a video. I learned so much watching you paint your swatches. Can you tell me are you using a DaVinci Maestro Series 10 or a Series 35 here? Also about what degree of a slant are you painting the swatches here? Sorry for all the technical questions, I just adore your swatches and I would like to give this a go with all of my watercolors too, thanks again Jane, you rock!
Thank you so much Jane for replying! I couldn’t tell if the brush was the series 10 or 35 so I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I absolutely love your swatches and website. Definitely the best!!
So glad I found your channel! Will you be sharing your latest De-Atramentis Ink Mixing achievements? I am not sure if I should start with RGB or CMYK+B/W/Thinner? Subscribed!
I have created a lot of mixing charts using the De Atramentis inks on my blog (use the search button - there are at least 4 posts). I'd recommend Yellow, Magenta and Blue (not cyan) as a really great mixing set to create a myriad of colours. I'd also add Black and Brown because they are great. I don't use the dilution solution much at all. Nor the white.
I use 185gsm paper for the swatches so they don't take up so much space (I have a couple of thousand now) - either Arches medium or Canson Montvale. I prefer 300gsm for paintings but for swatches a lighter weight is fine.
Gray Titanium and Jane’s Grey make a very artistic duo.

Thank you very much :-) It's always great to know all that work is helpful.

The brush is a Da Vinci series 10. Less pointed than the series 35. I work on a 20 degrees slant.

I'm not getting any audio.
Lovely video. What brush are you using in this video. Thanks :)
It is a Da Vinci Maestro kolinsky sable, series 10, size 4.
What kind of paper do you use ?

Thank you for showing us how you do the swatches. I just wondering what watercolour paper you were using here? Thanks.
