Vintage Stanley Wood plane restoration. PAT 10.12.1987

I got this wood plane at a cheap price a while back. I don’t have any experience as far as using wood plane goes but I always looked for an excuse to get one and start using it for my projects, if needed. It has a marking that shows “Stanley PAT 10.12.97. I used 1897 in my title because I know it is not from 1997. By the time the wood plane have changed completely. At least as far as the design...

Hello friends. I purchased this old hand plane a while ago for a good deal. I have never used a hand plane, but I decided to do this one. I’d appreciate it if you could tell me what brand or model this plane is if you ...

    My man, I'm about to embark on the same restoration, I have virtually no experience with anything like this, but your vid is helpful! My dad had his under a tarp for the last 20 years, I guesss I should plug it in and see if it even runs. But, he had his on a stand, you aren't kidding when you say 140 lbs. I think I almost tore my bicep getting it down! Anyway, a couple of questions: Do you have any details as to the substances and things you were putting on the various surfaces? I saw the WD-40 and that other container, but what of the rest of it?

    • @VintageCraftsmanTools
      @VintageCraftsmanTools 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello friend. It is indeed a heavy drill press. But a very accurate drill press. At least mine was. Unfortunately I sold mine due to lack of space. But I challenged it in various ways before selling it, and it always passed. If I were you, I wouldn’t plug it in, if the wiring is old, cracked, and beat up. I’d take it apart and clean first. (Just my opinion). As far as oiling goes, I used mainly WD-40, and some regular Multi-purpose oil. For the gears, I used a bit of multi purpose synthetic grease. I got mine from Amazon. It’s a good light synthetic grease. Good luck with your restoration. I’m sure it’ll turn out perfect 👌. Cheers.

    • @VintageCraftsmanTools
      @VintageCraftsmanTools หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is possible, but your chances I’d say is low. You might be able to find some, but depends on which part. Most parts can be replaced with something similar. Like bearings, gears, and belt. You can also open it up and see the parts are in the way they’re supposed to be. Check the bearings. It could be an easy fix.

To be honest with you, I spent too much time polishing it, so I decided to keep it as a collectable item. I have few switches in my tool box. Great video but here's the easy way to remove the old belt and install a new belt. I saw my Dad do this nearly 50 years ago and I still use the sander. Hold the sander on end and push the front wheel straight down on a workbench and the wheel will lock into place. The old belt slides off easily and the new belt slips on easily . Then align the belt and snap the wheel release then tighten the screw.

      @VintageCraftsmanTools 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. Sorry for my late response. Have you ever opened it for a service? It happens to me sometimes but in my case, I open every motor that I get and service them. So in my case, it’s usually the wiring, where I incorrectly connected the wires. The Assembly Switch inside could be a reason. The wools inside the old bush bearings could be another reason. Maybe it’s to replace them. Also maybe the AC’s body could be either loose or too tight. The ventilation could be a reason too. Maybe it has collected lot of dust. This is based on my experience though. Good luck with your motor.

Drill a bigger hold on the wheels and add a bearing instead of the bushings. Cheers 🍻

    That came out amazing. I've rebuilt some and every now and then I'd rebuild one to this level but it would run hotter than normal. Any idea why that would be? I always figured that over the decades it had just worn itself to where it shouldn't have been opened up.

      Thank you very much. This one was very old, and the wires were also extremely old and kind of “crispy”. I say crispy because once you moved them a bit, they’ll start to break (the wiring covers). Mine still works, but it’s good for maybe 1 hour, after that it’ll get hot. Using an oil could be another reason. In this model, you have to add oil to it every once in a while since they are supported by a brass bushings. Based on my experience, I have learned that the machines that require a constant oiling, could get hot pretty quickly after a while. I turn it on every now and then, so I can keep it operational. I have noticed that the type of oil I use has a big factor. Also what type of grease I use in the gears. But it’ll still get hot. I guess that’s how these old fans were built. I have two other smaller fans, which are less complicated but surprisingly, they work much more efficiently for longer hours than this one. Still, it’s fun to have something from the old days that is very dangerous and unsafe in today’s fan industry.

    So cool to see this. I love this style of drill press. I just completed a rebuild of a 1950's Dunlap and it''s interesting to see the quality difference between that and your Craftsman. Great job!

      Thank you very much. Very nice, Dunlap is also one of my favorite brands. I have few tools made by Dunlap. In general these old tools are very accurate. Every old drill press that I have restored was truly zero and accurate comparing with today’s brands. What a great craftsmanship.

      @@VintageCraftsmanTools My Dunlap video comes out tomorrow. It was the smaller drill press and the mechanism is very basic. It was missing the motor pulley so I had to improvise but it works fine. It has a Craftsman motor on it but the press itself is inferior to the Craftsman version.

    Nice job! I've restored a few of these older heavy drills although I don't usually go as deep into them as you do here. You should correct your title to read Black and Decker drill though since it's not a Craftsman. I subscribed because damn, our channels are similar. :)

      Hi. Thank you and thanks for your comment. I appreciate it. You are correct, and the title was incorrect. I just fixed it. I restore tools as a relaxation hobby. It’s just fun to share thoughts and opinions in this community. I just subscribed to your channel. You have lot of cool videos and we definitely share the same interests in old tools. Keep up the good work. Cheers 🍻

      @@VintageCraftsmanTools Same here. I do some out of necessity but most repairs I make are as a hobby. there's a great sense of accomplishment in making old tools useful again.

      Yes I agree. We also get to have a piece of history.
