เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ม.ค. 2020
This site is about Running Gear and Design. I am based in Dublin, Ireland, and the videos are generally filmed around the city.
The clue is in the title, I typically post videos that may be of interest to older runners, whose personal bests, like my own lie in the past, and avoiding injuries would be more relevant. I post videos every Thursday, with additional videos popped in between if I get time.
I write a James Joyce related website www.jj21k.com Discover Dublin by Reading and Running, and I have created a second TH-cam channel jj21k where the running videos specifically relate to the works of James Joyce.

Thanks for the care you put into this video. My experience agrees. Remarkably, the Nike Zoom Alpha 6 isn’t slower than the Alpha Fly 3 (I’m 60kg, 56yrs old, and running low to mid18mins for 5km these days). The Zoom Alpha 6 is considerably more comfortable too.

Which is better carbon x2 or carbon x spe ?
I like both of the shoes. At the same price I would but the X-SPE. But if the X2 was significantly cheaper I would go with those.
If the course is correctly measured, you ran faster than you thought. Your HR hit 186 bpm. Your max HR must be around 188 or so. Way to go Barry! I also have very similar max HR. We beat our age group average HR significantly. I think it was a good thing that the route was crowded initially so you held back a bit instead of burning out matches quickly. I think Jack gave a good effort but he was not really in his best racing shape. I am looking forward to the next one. It could be different if he is fired up by this for next time. BTW, I trust STRYD pace and distance more these days (with the recommended calibration fact 100 on Garmin, no Garmin auto re-calibration). My last marathon measured 42.41km and I think it was correct. What did your STRYD say about distance? Merry Xmas and happy new year Barry! 🎄🎅
Seasons Greetings Tolunay! This video was challenging to make. I tried using some new Adobe AI software to help eliminate some background noise, and make the in car segments sound better. It ended up slowing down Premiere Pro and in all the log jamming I forgot to include the Strava route that I made after the race, but popped into the description: www.strava.com/routes/3303338817918277830 Strava measures it at 9.8km, and I think my Garmin is pretty accurate. A few years ago I did a test with a measuring wheel. And I have run several marathons. The distance on my Stryd is always short. I have tried re-calibration with mixed results. I might try another calibration on the track as it is a known distance. I have been testing all sorts of things lately. In this video amongst others I was testing how long I could handhold the camera and extended battery handle. 10k with no problem is the answer! And testing the microphone. One other thing I have been testing is using the Garmin over my sleeves, connected to my heart rate monitor. It works. This time I also tested my Apple Watch over my sleeves. This does not work. The watch reverts to requiring a passcode after a short time. My Stryd is connected to my watch so it lost data. Lesson learned! But this was a great confidence building race. Jack was just using it as a bit of fun. He will be in better shape for the next one...not sure when that will be. Possibly late January...depending on what happens in the next race in early January. Have a great 2025!
@@OldManRunner If you have auto-calibration turned on FP-XXXXX device turn that off. With that off and calibration factor of 100, STRYD was spot on. That said, your course appears to be short.
Well done to both of you, it looked like a beautiful race. I hope Jack is OK after his struggles.
Cheers Chris! Jack is grand. He’ll be plotting some revenge in the next one and will be serving me up some humble pie in 2025
Can I take this to a 6-hour marathon?
Yes. The stack height means that I would be careful on any sharp turns, but must marathons don't have sharp turns. They should be fine. One side note is that the 42mm stack height means that they are not permissible for World Athletics Series Events but are allowable where the level of competition may not be relevant for international statistical purposes and where, therefore, Rules and Regulations may deviate from those in force at World Athletics. It really only applies to people chasing records and world class performances. Best wishes for your marathon.
@ thank you for the detailed response! Much appreciated
Hi there, it’s a very nice and clear video. Thank you! I just signed up the gold club membership, I have a question: I only have one of six majors left, Boston, is this membership helpful to achieve the entry? Do I still need to BQ? Thank you!
Glad it was helpful. There are lots of different ways into Boston. Not all involve qualifying. I made a video about the ways into Boston without qualifying: th-cam.com/video/V1L_9B04oyQ/w-d-xo.html I think that the short answer to both questions is yes. There are 150 Abbott World Marathon Majors places as far as I know, so it is helpful, but not guaranteed that you will get selected. In the video I go through all of the ways I could find out that you can get in without qualifying As it happens I qualified and also made a preview and review video of this years race, which may be of interest: th-cam.com/video/DTyy-ho5sqw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/guEWWcNGoTk/w-d-xo.html Very best wishes for getting a place!

They're not used to kms up there 😀 Looks a nice course but that looked tough especially during the second half.

"Age-related racing!"😂Yes!!! Seems you have to "reverse-age' Barry!!😆 That NP is absolutely stunningly gorgeous, and for me an Aussie girl, that greenery looks positively surreal, even looks to me like you could be able to bump into some leprechauns or some "real" elves there!! Loved the onscreen stats too Barry, you really are a marvel the effort you go to!! I was most fascinated watching your heart rate climbing, getting up to 188 there a couple of times but incredibly your final sprint was below that!! Though I didn't see your final time, did I miss it? Sometimes it's better to not know how hilly it'll be as you just give it your all, but ME TOO Barry I always go through the doldrums at around the 60-70% mark of the race!! 😂😂🙋♀
The picture in the attic is my plan...The heart rate took a sudden climb at one point, but then so did the course! I was hoping to get a tow from the Jack Rabbit during my late race doldrums, but no luck! My final time for the race was 49:15. So under the 50 minutes, but then the course is just shy of 10k. But I was really happy to sprint at the end. The viodeo took ages to make. Race videos always do. And I had all sorts of computer issues. And I meant to include some Strava details: www.strava.com/activities/13112992069

Wow thank you for your hard work
Hey mate great vid! I'm looking to do alot of filming from a chest mount what do u recommend? Cheers
I use the GoPro Chest Mount: gopro.com/en/ie/shop/mounts-accessories/chesty/AGCHM-001.html?srsltid=AfmBOoprrvVkpJencpuJwuAf8hWkyudVo7UG17cJlFyRJu8zCv7TbZZS It works well and is comfortable. It probably works best for cycling or activities other than running. When running it tens to move form side to isde and the footage is quite unstablised. You can see the effect in the running footage in this video: th-cam.com/video/dR8jFVrLhdg/w-d-xo.html For running, a head mount can be useful and more stable, but a GoPro is not light. I find I get better footage holding the camera on a selfie stick in my hand, though that has limitations. Another mount that I have found to be great when cycling is the DJI Osmo Action Neck Mount: store.dji.com/ie/product/osmo-action-hanging-neck-mount?vid=138111 Easy to use, not very heavy, ore expensive and I got good footage. But again it is not useful for running as it bounces on the neck with the foot impact. You can see some of the cycling footage in this video: th-cam.com/video/9fN3GRitccQ/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps...
@OldManRunner awesome thank you! Just wat hing a few vids 2see which one suits best, u havnt used the hat mount with the insta360 go3 have u? Thanks 4the in depth reply 🤙
I have not used the hat mount on the Insta360 go3, but I have on the Go 2. The hat mount is great. I also bought the DJI Osmo Action 2 and use it with the DJI Action 2 Magnetic Headband. That works pretty well. You can see some of the footage from the Insta360 in this video: studio.th-cam.com/users/video-l-jcYEZDKQ/edit You can see some footage from the DJI Action 2 here: th-cam.com/video/3YUknDD-vtk/w-d-xo.html
Brilliant cheers
most important part missing and that is accuracy. How accurate this devise in comparison with professional equipment
Yes. It would be great to compare with some professional equipment, but I would need both the professional equipment to comparative test and then additional equipment to test any differing results...neither of which I have so in this video I can only really show what the scales do.
Worst device I have ever purchased and I've purchased 3 withings scales before. 15 "inconclusives" to 1 successful measurment. I swear if I hadn't paid $400 dollars for this trash, I would have thrown it out the window. ABSOLUTELY TRASH. Don't buy it!
Can a Garmin EPIX display be modified so I can get live Data comparing left an right?
I don't have a Garmin EPIX, so apologies, but I don't know. I pair the Duo to my Apple Watch and I can get my Ground Contact Time Balance in real time and some other average times, 3s, 5s,10s, 30s, Lap and overall. Oddly I can't get Vertical Ratio, Vertical Oscillation Balance, Leg Spring Stiffness Balance, Impact Loading Rate Balance in real time on the watch but I can get Vertical Ratio. My guess is that they will get rolled out in time. And whatever gets rolled out on the Apple Watch will make its way to the Garmin devices at some stage blog.stryd.com/2023/11/14/native-power-based-workouts-on-garmin-watch/ Hope this helps
Very interesting. It seems i might have to upgrade my action 2 😉 😂
@@Chris_Baily I was thinking of you when I was doing the testing. I am going to try another test… might be another workaround…
This shoe has the same foam as the deviate nitro elite 2 ,its a premium foam not a basic nitro.
Al. That’s exactly the plan. The handle plus camera battery should give about 8 hours record time in warm weather. That will reduce down in the cold but hopefully enough to cover the Marathon. The memory card should be long enough to cover. So as long as I remember to press record… I’m hoping to secure the handle in the vest for most of the run and take it out at the start, finish and other spots to film some relatively steady footage. And then overlay time pace elevation map etc.
Assuming you are filming a marathon, the camera wouldn't be on all the time where as your Garmin will, is it possible overlay in portions?
4:03
But probably I'm wrong...
I definitely prefer the ZRX app, whichi s the newer version of Zombies Run, which now has Marvel Move, running from the Incredible Hulk is a lot of fun. Dustland is built on the same engine, and ZRX has the running audio minus the crypto, plus you can actually set things like step counting instead of gps and actually, ya know, progress through. Venture which is a third part of that app, has running from dinosaurs and even running the solar system.
It's sad that at $170 US, the Zoomfly 6 feels like a bargain.
Tempo or speed 2 for 15 km race 3.30-4 pace
I have not run in the Speed 2. For me for 15km my shoe of choice would be the Nike Vaporfly 3
I’ve done some tests and made a video, but I think your footage looked a lot better. My complaint is always with the flickering of lights. I didn’t seem to see it on your footage. Is this after the latest firmware?
I recorded the footage on October 29th 2024, with the latest Firmware at that stage. I think that it has been updated at least twice since then, and at least once was in relation to Super Night. It was updated again last night with sports data amongst other things, which was great as I am making a video about that... I took some night footage 7th November that you can see here: th-cam.com/video/dR8jFVrLhdg/w-d-xo.html Some of the footage is great and some very shaky, largely because I was running with a chest mount for almost all of it...hand held would have been much better but adrenaline got the best of me...
@@OldManRunner the footage when you are talking to camera looks great, did you use regular mode or super night mode?
I went with Super Night. Rock Steady Dewarp, essentially the same settings I thought I would from the end of the last video. Will be trying to film a marathon at night in early January and will use the same settings again
Great video. So you need less power in AF3 vs ZF6 to generate the same speed. That means your running effectiveness is better in AF3. Running Effectiveness is a Power concept (not to be confused by Running Efficiency or Running Economy or Relative Effort) which is how well you are converting power to speed. It is (speed (m/s) divided by (av.g. power / Stryd weight ) It is easy to calculate, unfortunately it is not available directly from Stryd Power Center or the Stryd app. I think it might be hard to detect small differences in short tests like this. A 20-40 min marathon or HM pace tempo workout might be better test. You can look at RE figures. I calculate running effectiveness from the tempo portions of the long runs.
Tolunay, as you say it is really hard to detect small differences in smaller tests. After the first few testsI was thinking I must be done something wrong, which is why I threw in the Infinity RN4 GTX to see if there was a difference in HR, which there was. Then I did the back to back to back to back test and it was hard to separate them. Finally I did the AF3 ZF6 AF3 test to try and isolate the results in the ZF6 and avoid any influence of fatigue. What I would really like is a giant data set, to get really meaningful data. But for the moment this adds a little data into the mix, which is more than the manufacturers do...
Having watched your review Barry, I want to buy these shoes. However I’m still getting over an injury, how do these Zoom Flys feel at slower paces? Thanks for the great videos!
Hello Guy. They felt good for me at all the paces. The high stack means I would hold off running in them if I had an injury as I like a really stable platform when I am injured. But other than that any pace anytime. Best wishes with the injury recovery.
Taking the time to execute a designed experiment to get at actual relative differences in running efficiency between shoes is very helpful. I wish there was more of this sort of thing on YT.
So do I, but will keep going with more tests in the meantime. Glad you found it helpful, make making the video worthwhile.
