Kawasaki KLX 140 SX Parts Big Bore Kit Upgrade - Part 2
มุมมอง 8162 หลายเดือนก่อน
Finally finished up part two. I had used generic o-rings for the oil pipe. Had to pull back down so ordered new gaskets took time. Did a re-hone with a 320 ball. My original was too course and really wore on the rings. Unfortunately you have to order the whole piston to get new rings. This has been a personal nightmare for me but learned a lot. It seems to run really hot and also has 60psi. Som...

This is the same 42cc from my previous videos. In part 3 you can see it is weak on power. New ring and carburetor didn't help. I replace with cheap cylinder kit and see if things get better.

I just installed that exact carb kit on my 140...you can just get to the choke to pull it out but you will not get it back in as it is right behind the petcock....
Yes, it is tricky. Me an my son have learned to wedge our fingertip between the petcock and choke to get it started. Just use your finger as a wedge to get it started back in.
@@SwareInGa great idea - I will try that
Hey can I ask what elevation you are at? The reason is I’m at 866ft above sea level and I used the 155 size Jet and it still ran to rich and so I went to the smallest they sent me which was a 140 and it was still to rich I messed with the air/fuel screw still was to rich so just seeing what you would recommend I try for the next size?
Hey There. so I am at 778' above sea level. If you are running stock bore I would say the pilot 22.5 is where the richness is coming from. TBparts has a pilot kit so I would try that starting with 17 - 18. I am running a big bore with larger valves and performance cam and mine is still rich with the 22.5. I am around 3 or more turns out on the air screw. I would say raising the needle clip and 3 turns out might help without the pilot kit.
@@SwareInGa ok thank you very much. Do you know where the pilot jet is on this carburetor?
@@Simster8920 Pull the float bowl and it is a small jet next to the main jet in the center. If you pull off the top cap and loosen the tube clamps. You should be able to rotate the carb over and access without having to pull it out.
Like your video. One suggestion for safety is never grab the chain or bar unless the brake is on or the engine is off. If the engine speed was just enough to grab the clutch ever so slightly the results would be horrible.
Very good point! Thanks for your like and concern.
Nice. I recently refreshed my 1997 Craftsman 42cc 16" chainsaw by doing basically everything you've done here and it runs and cuts like a champ!
@@justyourbasicdad Heck yeah 👍
Vintage?
@@timdurpos3298 maybe. Can’t find a date code
@@SwareInGa The Craftsman chainsaws have a date code on the serial/model number tag. This looks like a late 90s model.
@@justyourbasicdad thanks. Nothing on the label I could see but did find 96 on the inside top plastic
@@SwareInGa Manufacture date should be on the tag directly below the blue choke lever on this Craftsman saw.
@@timdurpos3298 OMG. If it was a snake. Right there complies with 1996 emissions.
Those plastic case Poulans are God awful. I do love my Old Mummy-Fart magnesium case Poulans. I do have a nice Crapsman badged 3400.
Yes in deed. It just looks good! I have a 56cc Stihl for real work...:)
Sounds like your listen to ronnie milsap prisoner of the highway i might be wrong just waht it sounds like. Still a great video
It was a live cover of Eminence Front by Goose
Note: 18" chainsaw after new Piston. Engine sounded good. My observation--- needs a good/ new sawchain. Dennis in Arizona. Oh, I have 3 of these Poulan 18" chainsaws. Dennis.
Thanks, you are most likely right. It has been a good one and done a lot of big trees. Thanks for watching
Great video. That's an awesome $10.00 find!
Thanks. I thought so too.
You need a bigger stater. It will start easy.
Not really. Starts right up with choke then idles until warm
Do you have a follow up video?
@@jex8046 No sorry I do not.
Hows the bike feel compared to the stock bike? Was the ported head from sx parts as well?
@@MartinRacingChannel Yes ported head from sx. It runs like a scalded dog but this VM26 is a nightmare. I’m pretty sure it’s been dumping fuel causing lean oil and excessive heat.
I am thinking the hedge trimmer. Never done one of those????
So far I am still tuning. Current settings 185 main, 20 pilot, 1.25 out on air and 1 clip up on the needle.
Update. Carb tear down and clean. Adjusting the float and will see. Seems like it’s just staying borderline flooded. Oil smells like gas and unit getting hot. 🤦♂️
How did the black gasket maker do with gasoline under the cylinder?
@@Johan_Pentrose good question. I have a job coming up soon and will use the saw. We will find out. 🤞
I did the swap with a stock 140, it has a lot more power than before but, when I quickly rev the throttle from idle, it dies. I put a 140 main jet in. Do you have any suggestions?
I have that issue when the airscrew is too far in. The carb seems to run really rich. Try 2.5 or more out on the airscrew to lean it out and see.
So my build seems to like a 20 pilot around 1.5 on the air screw, but I am running 170cc with ported head and oversized valves.
@@SwareInGa I put a 180 jet and a 27.5 pilot jet and it helped a little, but the throttle still bogs from a quick W.O.T., so i don't know what else i have to do. The spark plug looks brownish(no excess of black or white), and the engine runs very well top end, but a quick snap of the throttle completely kills the engine as if a kill switch were hit.
@@DONATHAN-cleanmusic might need to lean the air screw. Also try going up one notch on the needle. I’m still struggling with mine but 60psi could be my problem
@@SwareInGa Ok, will do, I'll let you know how it goes. Also, what does 60psi mean?
HEY VIEWERS! Sorry it is taking some time to get part 2. I ran into issues with compression and overheating. Waiting on parts so sit tight, part 2 is coming.
What puller did you buy for the flywheel
a.co/d/6wJdJfT
Seems like a lot of extra work replacing the timing chain. I will probably save that for if/when I need a bottom end rebuild. The rest looked pretty simple.
@@corylangston8764 true. The old one probably would have been fine.
Thank you, I am doing the same kit on a stock KLX 140L, watching you video helped me, I had the jet needle installed incorrectly. I had the ering above the spring plate rather than below. The engine kept dying after 1/4 throttle.
Absolutely, I have seen some post stating to put it on top. This is totally wrong and seems vindictive.
Thanks for filming... have the parts on my bench, will be tackling this project soon. 👍
Great, good luck. Just got mine back together so part 2 is coming.
Just did the same swap today. I’m having an issue with the fuel line being pinched by the tank due to the new routing. How did you solve that issue?
I used a longer line and looped around. Did not get to test much but once I get a gasket I can put the bike back together and test.
Okay cool. I saw a few other videos and will give that a shot tomorrow. Shouldn’t be too bad. Otherwise mine ran quite well and really woke up the 140. Excited to ride it.
Good Luck!
Aw man that sucks, that the head is stripped I have a FMF slip on. Would you recommend I do a 150 jet too? I got the kit ordered but I’m confused on what jets I should use, and id love to get a big bore kit video!
Yeap it sucks. Threads got into the cylinder so had to tear down either way. I would start with the 140 and see what the plug looks like, 150 was really black. Black too rich, you want chocolate brown. I am in process of the big bore install. Had to order custom flywheel puller.
@@SwareInGa ahhh i see, did you have to mess with the pilot jet at all or just the main and depending on my spark plug is how I should determine my jet so let’s say my spark plug is is black would I go up in jets or down but let’s say if my spark plug was lighter than brown would I go up or would I go down? And I’ve seen some other videos where people run the stock main jet that comes to the carb and they say it runs great but I honestly have no clue carbs confuse me. 😅
@@quinn3722 Yes dark means rich so go smaller. Carb comes with 190 which is pretty large. Running rich is not a bad thing other than carbon build up. But, lean is bad for the motor. Everyone states stock pilot is fine.
@@SwareInGa okay i see, ive seen people go with 180 and say it runs good
@@SwareInGa off topic but how long did it take for the kit to ship?
Thanks for the veido
My pleasure
I run these saws all the time but I run one step hotter spark ngk plug and it helps with slow response and starting
Good to know. They are cold natured
On some of the 4200 handles will not let you remove carb so I just hack saw a tad of handle back and it will slip out, don’t hurt a thing 😊
Oh wow, ok. Thanks for the heads up
Too much context... just change the worn out ring
Put a new ring in but it had huge gap
Very easy to rebuild the fuel system and carb Good saws if treated right 😊 Thanks
Yes sir. Thank you
very informative video. Lots of repair videos on your channel, Are you up for a collaboration? Hipa supplies parts for small engines and maybe we would work together to help more people in the community.
Thanks for the complement and offer. At this moment I do this on the side for fun.
The ring are just cheap quality period 😢😢😢
Yes but this guy was just wore out, RIP old cylinder
I can’t figure out why poulan makes so many different models of the 42 cc saws I hate the cable throttle system 😊
For real, they are a pain
I like the hone build tool
Thank you
They are really good saws if taken care of, most people don’t take care of them and use cheap oil, I usually fill it with B12 to unstick the ring 😊
Great point!
If it’s 10 bucks I will buy them, not sure if it’s a good deal until I see the piston thru muller 😊
Amen, wont hardly get you a happy meal today,
Thank you for the time you took to film this. It makes working on mine much easier.
Glad it helped
I love my Old Mummy-Fart Poulans but I wouldn't waste my time on modern plastic Poulans.
True. I upgraded to a Stihl but I do it for the fun.
It’s the fun of fixing them and getting other 5/8 year of work out of it for cheap
