Using Pigs to Clear Grown Up Farm Land
Our pigs are raised on some of the most grown up parts of the farm and are doing a great job clearing the underbrush and allowing me to get in with a chainsaw to reduce the number of cedar trees. Besides producing incredible meat for my community, I am regenerating a really poor part of the farm. Win Win!!!

Introducing the Livestock Guardian Dog to Sheep
มุมมอง 704ปีที่แล้ว
Our eleven month old livestock guardian dog, Sam, has been on the farm about three months and spent the entire time guarding our free-rage meat chickens. Now that we are done with chickens for the year, I needed to find a new job for Sam. In this video I introduce Sam to our sheep flock by first having spend a few days with a single ewe and then bringing the entire flock into his one acre paddo...

How to Make a Cheap and Easy Hay Feeder for Sheep or Goats
Hey, there's my motorcycle trailer at 0:16. Love watching your videos!
Great eyes my friend! That trailer has done a little bit of everything here on the farm.
You have a very pretty place. Why Red Wattles?
Thank you. That was the first pigs I started with and for no particular reason other than they are a heritage breed and that particular litter had been farrowed on pasture. I most raise Duroc/Berkshire cross piglets now but do have a litter of Berkshire/Red Wattle that are looking very nice. The meat is great.
Love the brooder, do you have a material list?
No, sorry. I simply built it on top of a hay wagon.
How did you build your brooder?
I built it on top of an old hay wagon. Simply used 2x4s and thin plywood for sides.
Did he just use the same needle for all 3 lambs!?!
Yes, one needle to withdrawal the liquid and another needle for insertion into the animal.
We made one, but it’s just that they get inside underneath
Yeah, the smaller one for sure get underneath, but I make sure I only put enough hay they will clean up in a day.
Thank you sir, awesome job
Very welcome
Going to be building two of these for my boss today, thanks for sharing such a great idea
You got it!
And so call professionals say u can't free range these cronish crosses that they're to lazy and lost their national instincts lol I say this about dogs, theres no such thing as a dumb dog just who's raising/training them lol
You nailed it!!!
Is it possible to breed your own stock?
I don’t think so for a couple reasons. First off, I believe these Cornish Cross are a hybrid chicken which means they cannot breed (can’t produce a fertile egg). Secondarily, you likely could never get one to live long enough to become fully mature. It is very difficult for these chickens to live past three-four months due to their size. Generally a chicken is around eight months before it will lay eggs.
@@coveychasefarm Thanks for your answer
Where did you get your crook?
Premier 1 - do a google search for them. Good equipment and great service.
This idea works great. I got the taller tote and converted it. My sheep love it!
And it is pretty easy to move around!
very informative
Appreciate it.
good info
Appreciate it!
How does Sam handle unemployment in the winter time?
That’s a great question! Right now I don’t have a batch of chickens on the field (currently in the brooder) so I have moved him to a field with our sheep. He doesn’t hang out with the sheep like I hoped but seems content.
Wow
Thd mysic is a bit too loud fir your soft voice
I have the 600 also and absolutely love it so far.
I am over 2,000 miles at this point and still really happy.
@@coveychasefarm that's great to hear

Simple cheap light awesome design
Yes, yes, yes and thank you!
I love your set up.
Appreciate it!!!
@@coveychasefarm do they just nest in the grass at night or do they have perches? How do you keep predators away? Just curious, I’d like to have a set up like yours one day.
@@meerathegreyhound1044 yes, the perch under the covers I was moving. I have a livestock guardian dog and two guard geese that live with the chickens.
Ah shucks, I wanted to see your water ing system for the pigs. Hopefully on the next video. I really like your style of free range chickens. I was wondering does the meat get tougher cause they move around much more? I want to raise meat chickens on a small scale. Maybe like 25. I want to do your system but give them a big enough area to where I don't have to move the fencing. Just move the shelter in the area. Is that possible?
Watering System for Pastured Pigs th-cam.com/users/shorts5g2gYxTl9uY?feature=share
Check out this video on the watering system. I use an IBC tote and then gravity fill the trough. The only difference is now I have added a float valve.
Yes, you could raise 25 and not move the fencing. Actually I can almost go for the 8 weeks and not move the fencing. You just have to move the covers every day. I don’t think the meat is tough, but they don’t gain weight as fast due to the exercise.
i was waiting for that pig to take her for a ride
😂
They need heat lamps.
Yes, I thought about that but would need to get electric to them somehow.
i commend your patience, i could never 😂

Appreciate ya!
The Carbon Cowboys would love to see this. You should check out their content. They can teach you all the little technical details of what it is that you are doing. This is great. Love to see it.
Thanks for the suggestion!!
@coveychasefarm I love to see farming done with as few chemicals as possible. Th earth takes care of animals and the animals take care of the earth!

Too funny! Until I edited the video I actually thought I had my sunglasses on my head. 🤠
👍
Love the video and feeder design. Is there anything you think I should adjust in construction if feeding a wet mix Sir ?
Probably not. I was wondering if it would leak but I have to turn mine over if it rains as they hold water.
@@coveychasefarm Thanks much!
I know this is an older video. How do you feel about the turning radius. Comparing this to a Polaris SP 570. On paper, the Polaris has a radius of 12.6 feet, but the UForce 600 shows a radius of 29.9 feet. I am amazed by the difference. I like the CMoto and it appears to be a great value, but I don't want to be making 8 point turns in the woods.
I have had a Polaris (older model) and can make the same turn on the CF Moto. I know because I have a fence on both sides of my driveway and I am able to make the turn on the CF Moto same as the Polaris. I haven’t even thought about an issue with turning radius until your question.
You hit poor buddy behind you with the cornbread 😂
😂😂😂
Do you think your successs free ranging is due to giving them so much space in the brooder?
I definitely believe the key to raising healthy chickens starts in the brooder. Having more space, rather than less space, is key. Also, keep the chicks very warm. If they ever get cold or chilled you will have issues when they are about five weeks old. I think the coldness does something to their heart causing sudden deaths later on.
Would love to see a video on how to built the chicken shelter. Most efficient system ive seen
I have actually been meaning to film a video showing the shelter build as I have had several requests.
Would love to see a video on how you built these shelters and a supply list looking to do similar.
Coming soon!
Your going to make a bird of prey very happy 😂
No sir. Raised 2,000 already this year with no losses. I have an Anatolian Shepherd with them. Come see me. I will show you how to do it.

Have you tryed to kerp some and breed them ?
I’ve never tried to breed any, but have heard it is difficult. Most of these Cornish Cross are a hybrid so I am not sure they can breed/lay fertile eggs anyway.
Came here to tell everyone not to do this, WAY too much waste - period. Ran two of them for a minute and tripled my feed costs. Don't.
I like mine, but harder to move around than what I expected.
Those are the nicest looking Tamworths I have ever seen. Do you sell breeding stock?
Hello - no, I buy whole litters of piglets from a few neighboring farmers and then raise them on pasture until processing weight. The folks I got these from have sold out of the pig business.
