Another great episode 👏 Bormac has been spectating the whole scenario, I feel for him 😂
Thanks Q, and yes, unfortunately Bormac has been on the sidelines most of the time haha.
Hi Craig, good job on this scenario. For the next scenario, this is the one I’m on. You will strike at the heart of the capital, and you will have a couple of turns to rescue some people before things get hectic. Btw, can you name your shock trooper Doomguy?
Thanks Jay, I'll have to make sure I make efficient use of those first few turns. I can definitely name the shock trooper Doomguy, great name choice.
Even though I support you choosing to go for the challenging victory condition in the last scenario, I think you should not have gone for directly striking the undead at their heart (base) as even Dacyn was kinda warning about the futility of such a task. I have played the old version of this so I know (spoilers ahead) that in the older version when at last we face the final boss we can just hold him off for long enough because the combined undead army is too massive to defeat in a frontal assault, so I had to just hold off a stalemate on 4-5 fronts with his minions and go at the main necromancer with an elite force hoping to lure him out and secure a quick victory before his minions routed me on other fronts. What Im trynna say here is (again Spoilers) most probably in the next scenario after making contact with the main undead army Gwedry will realise his mistake and you might have to hold off the undead untill others beat a hasty retreat. Anyways enjoying the series very much 👍👌
"oooh it's a swamp lizzard so it's a big aligator" Me : Swamp puppy.
Hahahaha nice. Although this swamp puppy had a nasty bite.
so basically the gold options boil down to: 50g: bonus scenario 0g: no rewards, lose all dunefolk 150g: add all dunefolk to your army + recruits
Do the dunefolk have any units with a significant impact based damage?(for ex say the thug and footpad line of outlaw faction) If not I think 150 might not justify having a bunch of units similar to horsemen and spearsmen who are useless against undead.
Thanks for the breakdown, I was wondering what the 150 gold option entailed.
You are the best Wesnoth content creator on this platform.
Thank you very much Garm, that is a huge compliment.
@@CRAIGatron I mean! Sometimes its just a silent playthrough, or a commentary that just skips all the lore or let's play that focuses on the story but not on what's happening during the mission. You strike the perfect balance of caring about the story/lore, explaining the mechanics of the game and providing actual play by play commentary that is on point. My only regret after watching a handful of your Wesnoth videos is that I can only like them once.
How are there so few enemies? When I played the scenario, that large space was completely filled with enemies. Every single hex was being occupied by them.
I'm not entirely sure Nikola, it could be that the mission underwent changes as part of an update (and was therefore different from when you played it) or there could be a different explanation as well.
Hi, Craig. Great video as always. I’m a little ahead of you in these few scenarios and I can give you some insight. For the next scenario, you will have to watch out for poison tiles, but you can find a permanent cure for your units. You will encounter a fancy individual, and if you find all five cures - you will get a bonus scenario. That’s the one I’m currently on. Hope that helps. 👍
Thanks Jay, I'll try to find all five cures as you mentioned.
You played the last turn very badly. You could have easily saved your high XP mage by just pulling him back and had Gweddry lead the front. He was at 37 HP anyways so it was very unlikely that he was gonna die in just 1 turn. Also, if you wanted to be super safe, you could have just placed gweddry on the leader keep and recruit some more fresh units who would have tanked the damage. In these early levels, it is very crucial to save your high XP units and advance them to the next level
28:30 "We can go for the kill, and I think that would be enough to evolve. I can never remember exactly how much experience you get." - I can tell you (1 XP per enemy level for fighting, 8 XP per enemy level for killing (4 for killing level 0)), but what is maybe easier to remember is the color of the XP bar: If it's white, you need less than one level-1-kill to get to the next level. (The lightest blue is for two level-1 kills or one level-2 kill, the next darker step for 3 level 1-kills or one level 3 (or 1+2)). So your Heavy Infantryman needs exactly one kill to level up. You can also look at the "Damage Calculation" dialog, it will show here a 84% chance of coming out with more HP than you got into the fight. → 34:21 And you are forgetting the leadership again (for the bowman, used it then for the HI)! Though I guess it turned out right here. Tactically, you fought the western army in the night, then retreated at day. The other way around would have been better.
Thanks for the reminder on XP gain Paulo. I know this has come up multiple times before but I seem to always forget. I appreciate the color indicator breakdown, that makes things easy. Also good call on my lack of time-of-day optimization, definitely need to do a better job of that.
Fun fact that it doesnt tell you anywhere: on the first turn of this scenario, your heroes attacks will always hit 100% of the time. And I just wanted to mention the achievement for this scenario: finish the map without killing the adept. Quite hard, especially on the hardest difficulty. It took me quite a few tries to achieve that. Luckily not all the achievements are this hard.
And here I was thinking I just got lucky on that first turn haha. That is great to know. That sounds like an extremely difficult achievement to obtain!
Great video as always Craig! Good job getting that quiver, let’s go!
Great episode Craig. Looking forward to the next one 😁 Btw, The undead are coming from the teleporter destination near by. I think there’s an undead spawning structure in the depths which can be accessed from the south west section of the underground. Happy holidays 🙏
Thanks Q, good call on the source of the undead. I will have to make sure to completely scout the depths.
hello your playlist is out of order
Thank you for catching that, I've fixed it.
In the next scenario, you'll have to choose the way to follow. Western route is easier, but eastern is potentially more rewarding. It's three scenarios long, but you can always turn back, although doing so will cost you an opportunity to get more.
Thanks for the heads up Roge, I'll have to think about which way would be best.
I think you should be more focused on leveling up your main hero always. Your hero is riskier to put into a fight and often it does not fight as much other units so if you have a clear opportunity to give it experience do it! Here you gave it to the bowman which is not even a unique unit in any way as the artifact can be given over to some other unit. Also your hero has leadership which truly can have a lot of value when used well. One tip regarding the leadership is that you do not have to move the unit to a certain spot and be over with it. You can move it so it gives the bonus to the adjacent units and then move it again to give the bonus to other units or go attack another unit etc... If such unit is in a village you can even bring it into the fight to give bonus and retreat to the same village which is way better than not utilizing that mechanic. That applies to the illuminating ability too or any ability that gives bonuses to the adjacent troops.
You make a great point Onni, after thinking about it more, I should have given the experience to Gweddry, especially given the leadership skill benefit. Also, good call regarding moving units for leadership/illumination.
Not much to criticize here, all the points I would have mentioned you already found yourself (like leaving the mage for healing the dwarves, or giving Gweddry a bit more fighting experience). (And I can't really tell what's coming next, the last time I played this it looked totally different.)
Thanks Paulo, I'm not sure what to expect but I'm looking forward to the next scenario.
I took a look at this campaign and it looks promising. Also as of note, in the next level there will be a bow item, and you can send an archer to go retrieve it. Keep in mind, you need to keep moving.
Thanks for the heads up Jay, much appreciated.
Great episode and a fantastic end with a hero and a warbreed 🙌. I’d say keep an eye on the east and north side of the map. Maybe send some spy drones?
Thank you, I'm really happy with how things went at the end as you mentioned. I will make sure to keep my eyes peeled and I think I will use some spy drones as you suggest to get better visual on my opponents.
→ 20:35 Moving Dacyn to the far-away village was not really needed here - the village just below is also not reachable by any enemy, and here he could provide some healing support to the heavy infantryman there (though the other one is more likely to be attacked anyways [and then was attacked]). And then Dacyn left anyways, so it didn't matter. → 35:55 "I don't know why he didn't turn into a Zombie" - Units on villages are protected from Plague (i.e. becoming Zombies). (I guess lore-wise, the village buries them properly?) → 42:07 I think you might have been able to save Eryn (the 30 XP mage) by pulling him back to the village near the river (only that ghost can reach him there, maybe the bat, depending on positioning of the other units). Though that would have all these skeletons attack someone else instead. As you noticed, getting another recruit could have helped here.
Great points Paulo, thank you. I had forgotten that villages counteract the plague effect.
On next scenario, keep moving, try to not stop for a moment. Also, in one of the corridors, should be an item that will helo againsts undead.
Thanks Roge, will do.
Are you not bothered by the RNG aspect of this game?
There are certainly times where the RNG is frustrating (you may here me lament this when rolls don't go my way), however, I try to think of it as part of the challenge of the game.
@@CRAIGatronI suppose that’s a good way of looking at it. If you enjoy the challenge. For me personally though I find it to be too frustrating. Which is why I use a mod called “Advanced Wesnoth Wars” which makes attacks never miss, and terrain bonus is instead used as a damage reducer. However, great content👍 looking forward to the series
@@christianpedraza6392 tell me you don't know how to play wesnoth without telling me you don't know how to play wesnoth.
One of my favourite campaigns! Note also that for this campaign, they recently added achievements for each scenario. Check the achievements tab for more info. They are sometimes really tricky to get on a first try, but maybe you can get some :) Another fun fact since I have finally caught up. Sometimes, you see diary entries in the story portion before the scenarios that read "YW" (for example during "Liberty". That means "Year of Wesnoth", i.e. years after the kingdom of Wesnoth was founded. That should help contextualizing the time periods a bit. A third last note as I'm watching. Plaque does not affect units on villages, thats why your Heavy Infrantry didnt get transformed at one point
I did not think to check for achievements, great call. Also, thank you mentioning the YW, that helps to fit the different campaigns into the overall history and helps things make a bit more sense.
@@CRAIGatron Achievements are a very new concept that the devs are currently implementing for more and more campaigns. They increase the replay value quite a bit and offer interesting challenges, however they might include some slight spoilers when you look at them beforehand, so it might be better you go into the scenario blind and only check the achievement after, but that's up to you!
You gonna love this scenario One of the best for me 😊👍.
Thanks Caden, I'm really looking forward to it.
Which one do you think is better, AoW 3 or 4?
While I do like both games, I think Age of Wonders 3 is my preference. That said, I have had a lot of fun with Age of Wonders 4 in my experience with it so far and I do plan to go back to it in the future.
I love this game. I still practice the second difficulty. The game is so hard but it is worth it. One of the best strategy games ever.
Great to see someone still enjoying AoW3, I was surprised that you didn't use the grimbeak crows more, the only cost is a few (9) mana each turn. They're super useful for scouting and mopping up the goodies.
You are exactly right, the crows are excellent for both scouting and gathering free resources. I did not prioritize them as much as I could have, good point.
I’m glad Mr. Bones survived until the end.
Me too, it was very fitting.
6:13 More officers (4 captains + 1 marshall) than soldiers (1 shaman, 1 archer, 1 ranger) in the start of that enemy army.
Good catch Paulo, I did not notice that.
@@CRAIGatron It's not something one needs to catch, but I found it funny.
I somehow missed this video last time. → 7:23 "Gryphon riders - those are going to be nasty. Nasty just because they have so much movement." - In the caves, the gryphons are actually not that fast (you can't easily fly a big bird through a narrow cave), and also have less defense there. (You noticed this later.) → I think mixing in a few more ghouls for poison should help against the high-resistance dwarves.
Have to say I am glad this campaign is over. Definetly excited to see you play the next campaign
Thanks Onni, I'm looking forward to the next one as well.
There are still many secrets to be uncovered, even in Endless Night. One requres Mal Keshar to deal the killing blow on cuttlefish from whirlpool, others open up on fifth attempt. IIRC I mentioned that Malin Kesher from older version of Descent into Darkness wasn't as whiny as the current one, but the campaign itself was more simple. Anyway, next one is Eastern Invasion, it was reworked recently, but the basic plot remained the same, so I can give some advice when it's needed.
Thanks Roge, I'm really impressed with how much depth this campaign has. I'm looking forward to Eastern Invasion.
Good campaign, Craig! What an interesting ending. You got lucky not having to fight the orcs, on my playthrough they were tough. Trolls, night bonus, and heavy hits just makes them a round ender. Nevertheless, good video like always.
Thanks Jay, I really enjoyed the campaign as well. As you mentioned, I can see how difficult it would be having to fight orcs.
This game still looks so beautiful, i played the base game for quite some time when it's free back then, maybe i'll get the dlc during sale later
I agree with you Indera, Age of Wonders 3 is still beautiful 10 years later. I would definitely recommend picking up the DLC content when it goes on sale as you mentioned.
This map is something of special case. Since the release of this map there has been complaints over the years for players who don't rush or take their time in general. This might have been patched at some point, but I still believe a hidden timer is ongoing. The hidden timer, I think its set on 80 turns before the map results in defeat. Stopping werlac is priority and since none of the enemies actually start with a throne initially it can sort of ease the resistance. If the a.i mess up it can eliminate themselves early on if lucky. But defeating Werlac directly should win the scenario directly even if there are more enemies left on map.
Thanks for the warning Gladen, I will make sure to not wait too long before venturing above ground and starting the fight.
Hi I recommend that you try to build your next towns ASAP. not only it will boost your economy, you are also currently paying 16g upkeep for settler. Take nomlik Army to clear the area north of your towns and build one town there. the second settler can go either to rebuild the ruins in the depths (you will need seafaring, unit that can dig and a strong army to clear the area) or the southeast (Also, digging, army) Don't go overboard with converting you will need the money to develop your cities as fast as possible. focus on units that you really want (like the summoner) I suggest giving Reskar "summon beast hoard" it is really powerful and can be a game changer in tough battle. You will need 14sp in druidry and 5 for the spell that means 3 more levels.
This is one of my favorite episodes in the campaign. Perfect turtling strategy.
I'm really liking it so far, thanks Nolan. I'm a bit nervous to venture above ground but I don't want to wait too long so it will be interesting to see how things play out.
I assume you're aware but a heads up, the scenario will repeat endlessly until Mal dies or an enemy steps on the book. If you want to force the latter, just hide in the cave next to the book and they'll walk on to it eventually
Thanks for mentioning this Tuxalonso. I was not sure at this point whether I wanted to keep trying to see how far I can get (as each battle seems to be getting harder due to more gold for my opponent) or just let them find the book as you say.
Hi Craig! Can i make a request? Can you name the Bone Shooter "Deadeye"? I think it works both cause he's an archer and an undead.
Hi Snarky. Absolutely, will name him that next episode. It is a great name suggestion for both reasons you mentioned.
I alway love this game, keep going, there also User made campaign that is also really good like the windsong triology (you got yourselves a new subcriber!) ❤
Hello Tâm, thank you very much and welcome to the channel. I am planning to explore the user made campaign content once I've completed more of the official campaigns. It is extremely impressive how much additional content exists thanks to a dedicated and passionate community.
Hi Craig. Some tips for early game next scenario: 1. On the first turn take some fast units, grab the haste berries, go underground, grab the next haste berries and go east until you meet the first city. This way you will get 3 free town on the first turn. 2. Start exploring and developing the underground. DO NOT go up through the second cave exit yet. (I recommend to wait until you have some war machines ready) 3. Don't send your prospectors digging alone. there are a lot of roaming monsters behind sone of the dirt walls. 4. Sites for more cities (you will have 2 free settlers): a. north of your stating cities (you will need to dig and clear the area from monsters). b. south east of your stating cities (you will need to dig and clear the area from monsters). c. There is a secret 3rd level to this scenario. north east from your stating cities behind the small body of water and some dirt walls there is a cave entrance that will take you there. in here you will find city ruins which can be rebuilt into a highly developed city. there is also a one way teleporter there that can take you back quickly to your stating cities. Good luck
Thanks Chaos, much appreciated.
Nice episode Craig. I think it’s best if you go back with Sundren and use her defensively just to make sure Ezabella doesn’t head for your cities and throne city. In the meantime, focus on attacking and finishing Ezabella off with Nomlik and Raskar. 👍
That's sound advice, thank you. I don't think I can afford to delay my attack on the throne city much longer given Isabella has access to her powerful class units already.
Hi Craig I think it is better to leave a garrison army at Reamon and send the heroes to help Sundren. This will allow you to level up your heroes (especially Bormak who will lead the next mission) and maybe find some cool items. On that note, there are some high level treasure sites in the northern corners of the map that are worth visiting before ending the mission.
I had not considered delaying the attack to give Bormac time to level up. I admit, I am hesitant to do so given Isabella already having her powerful class based units but I can definitely see the value in obtaining more items and experience before leaving this scenario. Thank you.
I do think having Sundren try to take the heavily defended city is too risky. I would summon another grimbeak crow to scout out Priatan to see if your other large army could take it or if they will need more troops first.
Great call Devon, thank you.
49:42 "Max Hitpoint bonus + 3, max XP + 20% - I don't know what that means" - it's the default AMLA (after maximum level advancement) bonus - your unit gets 3 more HP, but for the next time you need to collect 20% more XP. This is generally a less useful bonus, I'd only collect that after all the others. At this moment, the +10% resistance against impact and blade sounds best. The movement is also good to be able to reinforce other places faster (though your dragon has a quite good movement type, so it matters a bit less). → 1:02:25 "What are the odds of getting the kill here? 84%" (with 73% odds of staying at same health, 26% of getting somewhat injured) "versus 82%" (with a chance of 71% of getting some additional health for your dragon, 29% chance of getting somewhat injured). I think in this case I'd pick the 82%.
Thank you for explaining the max hitpoint upgrade situation Paulo, that makes sense. As you mentioned, I am glad I took the increased resistances upgrade.
41:33 When you say "he must be getting some extra boost just for existing", you can actually check that right there on "Status Table" by clicking the "Scenario Settings" it'll show you how much gold he starts with and also show if he has a based income because in some scenarios the enemies will simply have a default income regardless of whether or not they have villages.
That makes sense, thank you Snarky. I figured it must work something like that because the math did not seem to add up give the limited number of villages the hero had.
→ 5:52 "... and then we're just going to bring back all our best units, I don't see a reason to hold anything back." - This scenario has no turn limit, which means there is no bonus gold for finishing fast. If you go into the negatives and win before you can gain the money back, you'll start the next scenario with the minimum gold. That might eventually not be enough. (Also, you might want to have some cannon fodder so you can avoid losing your higher level units, and maybe even level some of the fodder units.) → Don't forget that your undead (except the ghosts) get 60% defense on the mushroom terrain. Use that as a place to station your units. → Don't forget that your dragon has a drain attack - you can use that for some healing. (Same as Mal, though that should only be used against range-focused units.)
Excellent assessment Paulo, thank you. I definitely need to make better use of the high defense tiles like the mushrooms and watch my gold situation very closely. Also as you say, utilizing drain will help keep the dragon and mal himself in the fight longer.
→ The dragon was using its leadership to boost the fire guardians. With 4 levels of difference, it gives +100%. That's why it was moving around all the time, and why it came to you in the end. → 16:40 "It's kind of a tough call" - I think the step from 5 to 6 movement is generally very useful (much more than e.g. 6 to 7), because in difficult terrain this can make the difference between 2 and 3 movement, or even 1 and 2. I think it's certainly more useful than 9→10 and 12→13 on the attack, especially when you are so very careful that you are almost not using Malin at all.
Thanks for mentioning this Paulo, I missed the massive boost those fire guardians were getting from the dragon and they helps explain why he was moving that way. And yes, the extra movement is certainly appealing, especially for a unit that will often be behind (due to needing to stay back and recruit) or needs to get away as a mission-critical unit.
I say, you must be the only person still making Wesnoth videos on youtube. Good on you boss
Thanks Zoltan, happy to be doing it.
Buddy please consistently upload battle for wesnoth also🙏🙏.
Apologies Caden, I am always trying for consistency but sometimes due to family and work commitments I am unable to get a wesnoth episode out each week. I will keep working on it.
