My CaadX in 2024
Finally, after approximately 2 years my 2018 CaadX is back from the dead and better than before in many ways. This is just a summary of the new parts on the bike and my feelings about it. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching!

Hey dad what bottom bracket did you use? Whats the spacer set-up?
Hey sonny. Hambini race BB. No spacers needed with Shimano!
Moan Moan Moan. Nice bike though
@kevinmcglinchey7572 - Thanks! I guess 😆
Thought about buying these. Not anymore Absolute trash. Wouldn't want my drink leaking all over my bike. Thanks for the video.
@timetrialist - I must say I was disappointed with them. Even the new model has the same drawbacks. They are aero though if that’s all you care about, but it’s no good imo if half your drink is on your bike frame. I’ve also had the bottles jump out of the cages at speed when I’ve hit a bump. Thanks for commenting!
whoa that's a cool looking bike!!
@714SNF thanks for watching! Yeah, really enjoying this bike and totally agree with you! Cheers!
Used Victoria Barzo 2.1 on this bike for bikepacking race. MTB terrain. I without problems. I protected frame with tape and no marks on bike. Very important is tire pressure. Go low as possible. But for future races i prefer 50 mm tires.
I just tried squeezing in 42c pathfinder pros on my caadx and there isn't enough clearance in the back with the chainstays but that's on a set of dt swiss g1800 with a 24mm inner width. It makes the tires measure out to 44mm. I'm surprised you can get 45c tires on it. Love the caadx, i use it with 30c slicks and ride exclusively road with it. It's such a versatile frameset.
@makeshift78 what year is your CaadX? I'm pretty sure they increased the tyre clearance on the 2018 models and later which I own. In fact, they made a number of changes to the X in 2018. My spinergy wheels are only 19mm internals and I'm running 1x which means no front mech for extra clearance. I probably have 3-5mm clearance either side of the back tyre. I agree totally with your views of the bike. I loved it from the first day of ownership. Cheers!
@@BikeLife154 I'm running 2x and the tire still clears the mech, but the chainstays i get "whisker" rub from tires with about 1mm clearance of the side knobs. Lots of clearance on the center tread. My frame is a 2017 and i wasn't aware that they made changes to the clearance, just that they included the SE spec with 37c stock tires on i19 rims.
Thank you for the video! I was wondering how wide I could go on my Revolt. I love my bike BTW!
@vivaaloha2020 ~ i wouldn't use anything more than a 50mm tyre before you start getting into mtb tyres and they are too big. Enjoy your riding!
Just ordered the Advanced 0 as my replacement for my endurance road bike. Hoping the carbon hoops will be let it be a good road bike replacement. Roads down by the south coast are just too atrocious and I've had good results with a 35mm tyre'd flat bar Kinesis so I'm expecting good things from it. Wondering how the 40mm in house rubber will fare though as I've been a long time advocate for the GP5000
Those tires look way bigger than 53mm
You get better hold of the bottle if you blow air back in to it after you drink.
The flip chip adjusting is definitely a Dudley thing but has benefitted me as I improve as a rider. I started in the longer wheelbase for more stability and have since moved to the shorter as my skills and control have improved. For that I think it’s super useful. It’s also nice for races - I’ve moved it when I know a race is gonna be more cyclocross-like with sharper turns and longer wheelbase for races I know are gonna be rowdy. Definitely not a gimmick as it can give you two slightly different bikes but there are some downsides for sure
Buy MTB not 9kg race bike
Sold my MTB to buy this. They’re too heavy and slow with terrible gearing!
Are manufacturers still producing disc wheels with quick release? I'm considering purchasing this second hand for 700€ with 2x11 Sram Rival, which seems like a good deal. But the wheels it comes with may require an upgrade at some point. Thanks for the video!
@miguelgonzalezvaz5552 - yes! A lot of manufacturers make wheels with interchangeable end caps which you can just swap over. Some you have to pay extra to get the QR end caps and some come in the box included in the price. However, with Spinergy you can also say you want the QR end caps at the time of purchase! Cheers!
Bike looks amazing
Hi Mark. Thank you so much! I think this bike will be with me until the frame breaks. 😁
Those seeking wider tyre clearance should opt for drop bar 29er or Monstercross/adventure bikes instead of Gravel bikes as they are made mainly for slimmer off road tyres for gravel races. A drop bar 29er monstercross/adventure bike can go everywhere where Gravel bikes might have limits. Both are fast on respective land surfaces but the monstercross can go anywhere. Safe riding all.
You are throwing away your tyres way too soon. The effacement of the rear tread pattern does not mean that the tread is worn through, far from it. Veloflex themselves make that clear. The tyres still have more more than half of their lives left by that point. The cut to the front's sidewall is a good reason to stop riding that tyre. Tyres can be repaired, however. I always have lengths of tyre casing salvaged from previous tyres that I use to repair such cuts. For glue, I use the cement from inner tube repair kits.
Thanks for your opinions. Maybe you should change the title to the type of bike it is: giant revolt advanced 1
Sorry, Boss!
Didn't know the factory wheels were an issue. Explains the $500 wheels on the one I'm looking at.
@gk5891 ~ yeah, the original wheels were not very stiff laterally and it often resulted in disc rub on the rear wheel. Since putting on better quality wheels I’ve not heard it at all. Thanks for watching!
как они себя на асфальтном покрытии ведут? Хороший накат? Шум есть? Как думаешь, на обод внутренней шириной 22 мм встанет как 45 мм?
Was the Wolf Tooth Post to Flat Mount Brake Adaptor not working for your fork?
@wkndwarrior123 ~ tbh I didn’t know such a thing existed! When I was looking originally a year or so ago I couldn’t find anything except flat to post mount adaptors. The bike came with adaptors to run 160mm rotors from stock on the front and back. I wonder if I could pick up one of these and get rid of the extra front adaptor. I think I’ll look into it for a future swap. Thanks for the info!
Congrats on bringing back to life a great bike! Hope you enjoy many more kilometers with it.
@robdogracing ~ thank you so much and thanks for watching! I’m looking forward to riding many Kilometers on it that’s for sure.
Didn't the fork get recalled
@Factoryseconds123 ~ the recall was on models prior to 2018.
Fantastic bike build with good parts and love.To build own bike by choosing every sigle detail and part is something else, nothing to compare to get new bike from shop.Enjoy every moment in nature, great job!
Yeah, I totally agree with you. There’s nothing like building up a bike with the parts you chose as opposed to being given what a company gives which is often ill fitting or of lower quality. Thanks for watching & commenting!
Lovely bike!
@TechnoTonique ~ 🙏
Looks nice! Did a similar revival of my Stevens Cyclocross bike. Which bartape is that you are using ?
Thanks man! The bar tape is by Kenesis and it’s the Jo Burt signature edition. I should have said in the video that it’s cushy. It has a nice feel and good grip when you sweat or it’s wet. Cheers!
I too like the aggressive posture on a bike. Wish more cross bikes would support 40-45 wide tires. Nice build!
Yeah, totally agree! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Damn pretty that!
@ArnageLM ~ thanks so much!
nice bike!
Cheers!
bike is looking good. i think you need to put a frame protector on it, that cable in front will rub on your frame.
@trooperV ~ thanks for commenting! There is a transparent frame protector there already you just can’t see it unless you zoom in.
@@BikeLife154 oh thats nice. Love the bike man.
Lovely Bike. Well played!
Thanks Stephen!
This is is just a quick look at my 2018 CaadX now in 2024 and my feelings on the upgrades I’ve made. Thanks for taking the time to watch my ramblings 😂
Great video, nice bike.
Thank you Peter!
Commenting a year too late haha! I hummed and hawwed about switching to the Mezcal 2.1 then I came across this vid. Thanks for being the Guinea pig! The clearance was my worry as the 2.1 comes out to a hair over 53mm. On my 2022 Advanced I’ve been using the 44mm Mezcal for bikepacking and, by far, are my favorite tire, even those times you find yourself on pavement. It’s just a shame Vittoria does not make it in a 700x50. This season will involve bikepacking single track, fire roads and some pavement in the Rockies so I ended up going with WTB Venture 700x50 (toss up between Teravail Cannonballs). To sum it up, 50mm seems to be the sweet spot if going big. Lots of clearance as you’ve found out. When not bikepacking, I’m definitely sticking with the Mezcal 44’s. Thanks for the review.
Yeah, 50mm is definitely the largest you wanna go on the Revolt. I enjoyed the 2.1 Mezcal tyres, but realistically it’s not gonna be good for your frame in the long run. I’m now running Pirelli cinturato M 45mm tyres. I feel they’re too narrow now though. I wish more manufacturers would make a 50mm tyre. Safe travels!
What about braking on those wheels in the wet......
I don’t ride in the rain like many others. If I get caught in the rain then you need to be more careful and ride according to the conditions. If you’re a heavy rider maybe not so good, but I’ve never had problems stopping.
Ch sound. CHINturato
You’ve got too much time on your hands!
I've got mine too since 2018. Can't complain though.
Stigmata?
Do you think you could leave flip chip in long position if you had two wheelsets, or would it be too sluggish on the road? I have ordered Revolt and I was thinking I'd run 50(ish) mm tires for gravel and 28-32mm for road.
@rawjunk ~ I have just left it in the long position since I bought mine. There’s no discernible difference in handling between the short and long position, anyway. It’s not as easy as they make out changing brake position etc. In fact it’s a hassle. Enjoy your new bike!
How did you match the fork spray paint to the frame? Looks great! I have the same bike and might do the fork paint change…
@timwhitelaw3344 - I guess I was just lucky. Just bought a matt black and it matched really well. Almost the same shade of black. If you do it make sure you use 600 grit paper or higher with water and don’t sand back to the carbon. Tape off the drop outs and spray all coats of paint within 15-20 minutes of each other. Most paints now you don’t leave overnight and sand between coats.
This is a video that I hope will show that changing to 1x is not always a smooth road and can even end up costing you more money and stress especially if you own a Cannondale. We all know chain line is super important, and no I didn’t really want to go back to BB30 but saw no alternative if I wanted to run this bike with a 1x drivetrain smoothly. I know I will need another spindle, not the purple one in the picture of my new crankset which is 119mm long. The CaadX needs a 109mm. 😩 Thanks for watching!
Heigt ?

Here’s my 2 cents. The most important things for me are the ability to carry all I need and security on the bike. This bag is 0.7L so I can get 2 spare tubes and everything to fix a flat. Having the zipper turn inwards stops anyone from easily reaching into the bag even as you’re standing still. Having a separate pocket in the bag, a tiny pocket is a concern?
My 2 cents are still the same, a bad design! Why does anyone need a giant label sewn into the inside of the bag? First thing I did was cut it out but even that wasn't easy because of how little the zipper actually opens. The first time it got dirty it remained stained after washing it. It would have been nice to have a separate pocket like most other bags to stop small tools rolling around and rattling. Like I said, terrible design. I no longer know where it is and tbh I don't care.
@@BikeLife154 not sure this is worth a response - good luck.
@@MokaBoucha admittedly not many comments on here, but the fact none are positive should tell you that your thoughts are in the minority. Take care.
I love my Revolt. I run 47mm Pathfinder Pro's in the stock (shorter) flip chip configuration.
How much room do you have with those? Can you still fit mudguards? I am getting the Revolt, and I was wondering if I could push 47 Pathfinders in without the hassle of flipping the chip.
@@user-qx4bp5rf3n I got out my calipers for you 👍. Inflated at 35psi on 25mm ID hookless carbon rims, the tires measure 48mm on top. In the rear, the narrowest clearance I can find is 7mm around the seat stays and chain stays. For the front fork, it is 12mm. I have the Revolt Advanced Pro 1. The only changes I’ve made are the tires and saddle. I race it at local club level gravel events and I ride it on the road. I’ve been a life long XC MTB rider, and this is my first drop bar bike. It’s a comfortable BEAST.
@@petersouthernboy6327 That's really spacious. Thanks! I'm coming over from the road and who knows, I might not return. Want to adventure more, which is why I started riding in the first place - and I'm also quite excited to do something a bit more technical, but I'm honestly too scared to mountain bike xD When I tried the Revolt in the shop, it was super comfortable (aluminium version) even with terrible 38mm tyres from Giant. I have ungodly amounts of seatpost, which helps.
@@user-qx4bp5rf3n with the flip chip turned, it will fit 53mm easy. Personally, I’m fine with the shorter wheelbase and 47’s. As you’ve noticed, there’s quite a bit of compliance under the saddle, but the bottom bracket and lower chainstays are quite robust and stiff.
So u have to get another one
Hi Anthony! What do you mean?
I have to ask - what is that small bike stand? Where can I get one?
Last year rented a Giant Revolt advanced 2 for a 3 week road ride in the UK and really liked the bike. The ride was 1000 miles, the tires were 28mm and was so impressed with the bike am looking around to acquire one.
I think the 2x is good I’m just not convinced 1x works well for road. Thanks for commenting!
Quanto sei alto che taglia e?
Great review but when your making objections on how others say it’s hard too set up make sure your using the same wheel as them too disagree because if it ain’t you can’t compare apples with apples
Lovely bike because I own the same year CAAD 12 only difference is I have the 105-rim brake version with the SI crank. My version is the bike that Bike Radar chose as Bike of the Year 2016 in Black and green. Luckily for me I never crashed it, fingers crossed. Everything is original except bar tape and tires.
Thanks, Patrick! I bought my bike based on the BikeRadar bike of the year. Great Bikes! Stay safe!
Lovely bike. Glad you got it back on the road. I have a Caad 10 and a 2018 supersix evo that are both fabulous bikes.
