I have an M20 lower block but can't confirm it's a Sper eta. Is there an identifying location on the lower block?
There are sometimes stamping marks but you'd have to check rod part number and that the piston heads look correct
Love the videos man, but the video was really laggy I’m not sure if it was just on my end?
Will look into it!
GO GO GO
What is the random wire connected to the OBC?
That would connect to your engine harness
@@themaskeddriver super new here. What does plugging it in do? And where on tue engine harness? Thanks
There are a few plug near the ecu and it goes to one of them. You can't mix them up. I dont remember exactly what it does but it either pulls data off ecu to display on the obc or it pulls data from obc for the ecu
Which is the difference between E46 Yellow and Purple racks? Thank you.
Glad to see you brother my build is taking forever as well so we are all on the same page as e30 guys I got one car with Igor and the other is in Florida 🤯😱😨 🌪️ TALK ABOUT STRESS
You just want the clean look or for weight removal? Im thinking about pulling the abs just because it doesn't work.
Just to clean it up. Sure it takes out a little weight but weight is not the goal for this build
Insane work🔥🔥🔥
Looks good!
Need to see an e36 version. Just watched video of a VW Polo steering rack conversion on racecar. Better steering ratio than the Z3 1.9 Rack I just swapped in.
Alot of people interested in e36 will see what we can do! I'll have to look into the vw polo rack!
do you have a link for that video?
Love your garage, seen that engine picture circling around. Got a new subscriber.
Appreciate it!
Keep at it man- don’t forget - the best way to eat an elephant is a little bit at a time.
Will be here, no matter how long it takes 😊
Appreciate it!
what Radiator is that?
Csf radiator modified by Castro Motorsports
To switch to a z3 rack do u have to do any upgrades or changes to fit the z3 rack and will it change where my wheels sit for example will it rub once i switch to a z3 rack?
If you have a e30 non airbag car. You need rack spacers and an lspr linkage or modify you stock linkage. If you have an e30 airbag car. You need rack spacers and firewall plate. You will need to trim firewall slightly. For e36 it's a direct swap. Everything available on rageitparts.com
Looking for good strong advice. I have a track built but streetable e30 M53 w/S53 crank running 225s. Volvo electric power steering pump. It has some freeway time but mostly canyon type and track driving. Leaning toward the yellow. I’d love to hear this communities thought. Videos are absolutely amazing. Love the education.
Yellow or purple tag rack will be perfect!
I have been looking for this info everywhere Highly apreciated
My bloody fuel return pipe is blocked
Unfortunately it's a common issue
@@themaskeddriver Do you know any way of clearing this return pipe I have tried a few chemicals Nothing!
Is there any difference between the rear axle of the z3m and z3? I want to install it on my e30 but I can't find z3m axles in my country, only the z3, because they say they are not the same size and I wanted to install an axle on mine that would just fit without needing to drill new holes
Yes there is a difference in trailing arms and axles. You want to match z3 with z3, z3m with z3m. If you have e30 trailing arms you need e30. Also I'd you change to z3 or z3m you need the axle output flanges to match the axles
normal z3 has smaller wheel bearing than the Z3M
Thanks for the list im building the same rear end. What offset wheel and size are you running with this? I would like to stick with a 16 in rim
I'm running style 42s 17x8 et20. 16s are prefect. I have to run 17s because of the slr kit in the front
@@themaskeddriver is it because of the shape of the slr kit?
Becuase of one of the front lower bolts
Bro your video just helped me out !!!! I been hunting why I don’t get that ac bump and it’s because the purple/blk wire isn’t connected . I just jumped it together and it works like it’s supposed to now !❤❤❤❤❤ so that wiring for the ac is for ac bump just to clarify 😂😂😂
Dude...thank you for the detail you put into this video, i originally used it to take my dash out for the first time and now its time to put in the new one and i was a bit lost til i remembered your video, its so well done its gonna make the reinstall a lot easier, major props! Let me know if im wrong but for actually mounting the dash it seems like its only the main 4 or 5 bolts on the side brackets holding it tight, right? Thanks again man!
Correct. Two bolts on either side for the dash. Sometime a 5 bolt where the abs unit goes on the left side of the car
@@themaskeddriver awesome thank you again man, looking forward to more videos!
My standard 328i rack feels so heavy when I turn. If I upgrade to one of these will it feel lighter? And if so which one do you recommend not sure which to go for. Thanks
I'd start by making sure your power steering system is working properly and then go from there
@@themaskeddriverI know they’re older cars but are they supposed to feel heavier than newer ones today or do I have a problem?
No it should feel normal. You shouldn't need to be tugging if your power steering is working. You should be able to two finger or palm the wheel for a U turn
not a fan
Appreciate your opinion. They are definitely not for everyone
Bolt paterns are same on e36 and e46?
If you mean splines the yes. E30/z3/e46/e36 all have the same spline and mounting points. Z4 has the same mounting points but different splines
Hey man! Thanks for the video. Trying to reinstall a glove box on my first e30 project that came with it off. Any idea what wires in the video connect to the glove box light? I can’t tell
So for the upper glovebox panel. It's two white connectors that are close to each other. Then there is a super long wires with a black square connectors that attaches to the glovebox itself which is for the removable flash light
How was fitting the bumpers, is this a U.S. spec car or euro?
US car and euro bumpers. Bumpers fit just like they should
Hey these arms are the same length as original e36 arms would be ?
Yes
So if I got this right after making sure the new late model engine harness has each c101 pins ran to the same spot and removing uneeded pins as well as just removing pin 20 if needed then all you gotta do is get those wires for your ac, tach, speed, and fuel wired in to the c104 then you should be able to throw in a m20b25 with no issues correct?
Yes...realistically you should be running whatever engine harness to match your chassis harness. This was kinda a headache but will be more understood in future videos
@@themaskeddriver I’m just trying to figure it out as I have a early model car that I have built a stroker m20b25 for and so hoping to be able to atleast use the features I had in my car
If just use an early model 87 325i harness and make your life easy
@@themaskeddriver oh okay, so the early 87 engine harness has the same c101 and 104 connectors as any early car other then square plug early cars?
Correct. Obviously you want to quickly check and make sure pins are in the right place but 87 325i harness is the best of all the early model harnesses. I do have one available it just needs a power wire changed out. Which I also have on the side
Great video! Love seeing the difference on each step.
I just completed your awesome video. Any of you guys recommend thats a balance of both light and smooth rack. I have an e30 running stock m42 motor just want a fun daily and occasional canyon drive any recommendations? Everyone always tell me to get the z3 rack. Whats your thoughts?
Daily driving rack I recommend the e36 m3 96+ rack. Best bang for the buck upgrade. After than usual I recommend either a yellow or purple tag steering rack. They are a little heavier feeling compared to the e36 m3. The z3 rack I don't usual recommend for a daily driver as, I personally think, it's a little to aggressive. It's a great canyon rack. You just have to pay a little bit more attention when driving especially on the freeway at speed because if you jerk the wheel at all with a z3 rack. It's going in that direct immediately
is this to use the stock ecu?
Yes can use stock ecu but I am using a plug and play adapter with ecumasters emu black
im lost on the ac switch, doesnt it need to connect to the ecu?
Yes it runs though the chassis harness to the 3 pin connector on the late model harness (only two pins actually being used if I remember it's the black/red (ac) and a black purple. From the 3 pin connector it goes into engine harness and then into the ecu
@@themaskeddriveryea I’m doing ur swap flipped. Late model chassis early harness
Why? If it's an m20 there is no reason to use the early model harness!!!!!!
@@themaskeddriverbecause it’s what I had on deck . My original was damaged beyond repair and I had a spare . So i basically merged the 2
Sell the early (which is probably too late) and sell the late and just buy a late model harness. No point in going through all this headache!
Been 2 years since I swaped to a purple tag, and I'm very pleased 😊
Did you use a specific rear bumper rubber trim or a regular euro bumper trim piece ?
Regular euro bumper trim, with the correct mtech 1 clips
Hey bro, do you happen to know if the 96+m3 rack fits in a 91 airbag car without modification? Or does any rack fit in a 91 airbag car without modification (besides the original rack lol).
Hi any airbag car will require firewall modification for any steering rack other than e30. Only way for no modifications is to swap on a non-airbag steering column (direct bolt on swap) which requires no cutting
I see garagistic now has polyurethane version (in red) for this. A friend recommends me to stick with the stock rubber one as they absorb the road imperfections better. I am not tracking my car. The stock rubber and polyurethane and delrin all cost about the same. What do you recommend?
The harder the material the more you will feel when driving. So if you want an oem feel you should go with rubber. If you want a little more feel go with poly and even more delrin. Just remember though you are modifying a 40+ year old part. Make sure you check to make the U joints
i think it is silly to do this. The car is already so light. doing so can compromise the already weak rigidity of the aging car.,
That's why you are supposed to run a full cage when doing this conversion
Hmm. I have a late model 316i E30. It's a Gulf-spec car which is similar to Euro-spec I think. My tank has the crossover pipe AND uses two fuel level senders. I'm not sure what the fluid capacity is tho.
It's a later version of the early model tank
Video was super helpful and informative. I’m going to run a z4 rack in my 2jz powered e30
do you still need to attach oil lines, like loop them ? what way does it work for purple tag ?
No, you'd remove all hydraulic power steering lines and use a ps delete block on any of the racks. This works with any rack you want as it's a column replacement not a rack replacement. You'd simply install a purple tag rack. Use a power steering delete block off on the rack and electric power steering column and you are good to go! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Did you build your half cage? Or did you order it from someone?
@baysidefabrication made it
@@themaskeddriver thank you sir!
I swear this motor was na setup, in a different video 🤷😅
Good looking build. Really dig that ac compressor too ❤
Awesome information, thank you for making this.
Want 2.5 turns? Google: Black Tag BMW steering rack.
thank you but how do i get a new harness lol!!!!!!!!!
Brand new? Bmw doesn't sell for harness. I believe chassisharness on Instagram is making custom e30 harness for like a drift car. If your looking for a used oem harness. Shoot me a dm on Instagram I might have one
Where did you get those headers from ❤
I assume your talking about the ireland engineering m20 race headers
How do you compare the steering feel and responsiveness on both steering racks ??
I have multiple videos going over each of the most common e30 swap racks on my channel. Talking about how they feel
Nice video bro gotta question so the big 0 gauge wire from the disturbtion block is for the starter?.
Starter (engine bay) and fuse box (interior) power for me. Oem you'd have the power for abs as well
I'm surprised at your comments comparing the Z3 and E46 racks as the E46 has a faster ratio (forget L2L as that just tells us where the stops are). The numbers I've found are as follows, racks are Linear unless otherwise stated: Z4 12.8:1 E46 13.7:1 Z3 14.5:1 (or 13.9 depending on source or model) E36 15.4:1 Progressive (pre-95 very progressive, '96+ slightly progressive) E46 M3 15.4:1 E30 20.5:1 There's debate over some of these numbers because internet, but the E46 # came out of a BMW manual.
Again 96+ m3 is linear It might be a faster ratio but in terms of feel. Z3 is a much faster turning rack. L2l does matter. But again this is all my opinion on these racks. Someone else driving them back to back on the same set up could feel something different
