Explore the Universe with Dr. Kirsten Banks - aka AstroKirsten!
I’m an astrophysicist and science communicator with a deep love for the stars, here to make the mysteries of the cosmos fun and accessible for everyone. Whether you're a curious beginner or a seasoned space enthusiast, this channel is all about diving deep into the wonders of space, one stellar story at a time.
I recently completed my PhD at UNSW, where I studied evolved stars to unlock the 13+ billion-year history of the Milky Way galaxy. You've probably seen my shorter videos floating around, but here we take things to the next level - more details, more science, and more spacey goodness!
Got a burning question about space? I'd love to hear from you! Reach out through my website’s contact form, and let’s explore the universe together!

Astrophysicist Tries Comedy - AstroKirsten The STEAM Room 2023 Comedy Set
What happens when you teach an astrophysicist to perform comedy? Something kinda funny and very nerdy!
I had the great opportunity to try my hand at stand-up comedy in 2023 through The STEAM Room where scientists and comedians come together to bring laughs, learning, and lots of fun to the stage. This set was filmed at the Enmore Theatre as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival.
Performing scientists included:
Dr Karl Kruszelnicki
Kirsten Banks
Diva Attenbra
Dr Tara Djokic
Dr Scott Chadwick
Pritam Bordhan
Dr Linda Mitchell
Ruby Stephens
Stephen Woodcock
Tina Baradaran
Luke Steller
Performing comedians included:
Bec Melrose
Suren Jayemanne
Carolyn Swindell
Ru Halwala
Tom Stevenson
I was supported and coached by comedians Ru Halwala and Tom Stevenson and without their help, along with their team of comedians, I wouldn't have been able to do this!
Filming and editing by Dave Hukka.

Why this Black Hole has BAFFLED Astronomers
proof that i am being watched every day:
Why are you thankful for wine and not the grapes themselves?
It’s crazy to think that dinosaurs as a classification of species (several species but I guess that’s the plural and singular form of species) still stood after several cataclysmic events (the volcano for instance) and yet the asteroid did the job…
Birds
@@sgtguy2500 yeah birds survived but they were birds more similar to what we think of as birds and less similar to your traditional dinosaurs at that point. Birds as we know them today (minus a few characteristics) evolved 150 million years ago. The asteroid was 65 million years ago.
Awesome mirror
GG
Hmm I could go for some myself ..
Awesome 🎉
Was waiting for the Uranus jokes...
ITS GOING TO HAPPEN IN DECEMBER 2024 GET READY YALL NEXT MONTH
If it comes close to Roach limit it could break down into rings and bad for the equator
Not to worry, the Earth's Roche limit is just shy of 20,000 km, about 10,000 km nearer to Earth than Apophis is predicted to fly by in 2029.
Which gown do you like better I wonder😂
Big congrats!
Congratulations. Lovely dress.
Hey congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
Now we know where Groudon and Kyogre live.
I got married in space. Earth is in space.
Congratulations!!!❤🎉 Wishing every happiness to you both!
Sooooo; Q: what's the predicted ratio of black holes to normal stars..? Answer below. \/ A: About 0.1 % of the stars in our galaxy are dense enough to produce black holes. You could reasonably extrapolate to all galaxies but the existence of super massive black holes as galaxial hubs means that either our sums are wrong or galaxies start as seeds in a granular big bang!
I love explanations. 😅 I love science. I love the way you story tell.
That was actually wonderful to watch. And you absolutely knew what you were doing, walking back and forth across the stage at those angles. A lot of jealous members of the audience were jealous of Jamie haha. Congrats on the engagement!
Congrats!❤🎉
All the best to you both.
Girl, you are fantastic! I hope all the funding you need finds it's way to you!
Congratulations 🎉

Congrats, It was funny. And i appreciate the great effort. I am sure, you were nervous, and anyway the result is great
Awesome job Dr Kirsten 🎉😂 Always love your work.
Rofl 😂😂😂
Love it. You might have a career as a space comedian 😂😂😂😂
Sounds like more facts await Jamie on upcoming anniversaries.
That’s great. I didn’t expect too much, since you aren’t a professional comedian. But I was pleasantly surprised. I’d pay to watch that for sure. And I don’t even really watch standup comedy. Also RIP Jamie💀
It's information like this that convinces me that we live in a black hole. All matter in the universe is accelerating to a single point in the universe.
KIRTSEN!! LOL! The question really is, does Rogan really exist?...
What a babe ! Hilarious AND Smart
It was pretty good for a first performance!
Do more of this! It's delightful to see young scientists having so much fun with our universe. I image this is how Willow Rosenberg could have evolved if she had gone full science instead of Wicca (yeah, showing my age... and I don't care)
OMG hahahaha this is cool!!!
Awesome 😎 👌
this youtubers need more sub, i swear.
Then they can catch it, put it in a jar and keep it as a pet 😊
Ooooh, I'm excited for this! Hopefully a come up with some conclusive observations soon!!
That's absolutely crazy! Thank you for explaining it so well!
Nah isn't ruby, chromium metal it's oxide and judging by the violence I don't think there oxygen in this planet, same for the aluminium to form ruby you need oxide
There is titanium oxide in the atmosphere, along with oxygen thanks to the breaking down of water molecules on the daytime side of the planet.
old news for keplarians
I liked this video, good job not making it annoying and exaggerated
It's gassy because of IBS
23 Million lightyears is big. Intergalactic voids are only a little bigger at an average of 30 Mly
So, when are we going ?? 🚀
what has that in fahrenheit
Is there a way we can send an unmanned ship to that planet to get the rubies and sapphires?
This is what an evil villain says before beginning their evil scheme
Let's just say it would be a better investment to start a banana plantation in Antarctica.
@Bagofnowt who told you I was a villain? I'll have their head for that lol
