Six String Twangin
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 ก.ค. 2015
Hey everybody, Jeff Case here. You'll find videos on this channel of songs I like to play, things I like to teach, and whatever inspires me at the moment. Mostly American roots music, rockabilly, country, etc.And a few others as well. The lessons on this channel are geared towards the intermediate player who wants to take their playing up a notch into pro territory. When I give lessons I like to explain not just where to put your fingers (anybody can do that) but to teach you the fundamentals of where these "licks" (ideas) come from so that you can apply these concepts to your own creations. I'm a big fan of moving past parroting and really coming into your own style by learning the fundamentals. The guitar is a lifelong journey of learning and I think that teaching is also a part of that journey as well. So, I will teach you what I can, and in my own spare time aside from making these videos I'm also always learning, always trying to improve. This is for life! Ya know? Enjoy!

Totally Breaking Down ROCKABILLY SWING - How Brian Setzer Does It
There's a lot of things happening in Rockabilly Swing, (that's what I call it) and from the surface it can look extremely complicated, but I have done the work for you. I have broken down this piece that I wrote the same way that I break things down on my Patreon channel,
www.patreon.com/sixstringtwangin
and have explained EXACTLY what is going on here and where all of this stuff is coming from. I've explained how these complicated licks, riffs, lines and ideas derive from their simplest musical forms. They all come from somewhere, and that "somewhere" is an extremely simple concept.
This video is a bit long. It's the kind of deep dives I do on my Patreon channel. It was originally going to be a Patreon video, but I've changed my mind and I'm now giving it to you. Stick with me and pay attention and I promise you, you'll be writing this kind of stuff on your own. Your fingers will be flying all over the place, and you'll finally understand why!
I'm not saying that this is exactly how Brian Setzer plays, but what I mean is, I kind of think about things the same way that he does when it comes to taking little bits from a lot of different styles, or genres of music. In this little tune I wrote you can pick out elements of Jazz, Country, Blues, Swing, and Rockabilly. As far as country in this piece, it even covers the more semi-modern telecaster chicken pickin' country as well as the old timey Merle Travis picking from the days of old honky tonks.
You mix all that up and let it rip and you know it's just going to sound GOOD. There's no two ways around it. Taking from all those forms of American Roots Music and applying it in this way is a sure fast way to dramatically improve your playing and UNDERSTANDING of how music works.
...if you pay attention to this lesson.
Stick with me. I got you.
Gear that I used:
Gretsch 6120 (G6120EC) guitar, with a P90 neck pickup and a Dynasonic bridge pickup.
Peavey Delta Blues 30 watt tube amp. (this guitar and amp combo is what Darrel Higham uses and it sounds great!)
No pedals. Using spring reverb from the amp.
Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 for getting the sound coming out of my amp into the computer.
Shure SM57 mic for recording guitar, (micing the amplifier)
RODE WiGo ii clip on mic for voice.
Canon EOS RP camera with a 24-105 lens.
MSI Raider GE78 HX 13V laptop computer.
Ableton Live 12 Lite - for recording guitar tracks in computer.
PowerDirector 365 for editing videos. (great program btw) Yearly Subscription.
Dunlop Picks - the 3 thicknesses I like are (Green 0.88mm), (Blue 1.0mm), and sometimes (Purple 1.14mm).
Words of advice. Understand the concept, not where to put your fingers.
It's all about fundamentals!
Enjoy! Keep on Pickin'!

You probably play rockabilly. And you probably look up to your rockabilly guitar heroes just like I do. You know what your heroes all have in common? They all know a thing or two about playing other genres. And they use that to be flashy in front of their rockabilly audience. Now here is something that you could work into a rockabilly set in between songs. It's gonna stand out. It's going to be...

He is the best and the only one who has played it well so far. Thanks
Aww man, thanks Johnny. You rule!
Awesome, gonna spend the hole week to get this down
He'll yeah man! Nothing better than working on something like that during the cold winter. Assuming you're in the northern hemisphere, lol!
Cool!! Would you recommend that guitar ?? Bgsby is stable? Neck is comfortable? Thanks❤
Man I would totally recommend this guitar! This one in particular is the older Korean made version with the Super HiLo Tron pickups. The newer ones have like a broadtron or something. Not sure which is better but these are really spanky and twangy. The neck is super comfortable and I've never had a problem with the Bigsby making it go out of tune. Even on my newer 6120 Eddie Cochran model, the Bigsby is perfect. I mean PERFECT. It never goes out of tune. I can play it all day. Same as this 5622T. I can play it all day and maybe touch the tuners once. And I'm really big about being in tune. That kind of stuff drives me absolutely crazy.
Great lesson! Wish you all the best!!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
What an intro!-- Back To The Boogie Future with Jeff Case!! Great instrumental, too! You're a great teacher, and you make it so much fun. Thanks for the update, adding you and your partner to my prayer list pronto. Please give her my best. Hang in there, stay the course, you'll get thru this, God bless you both! 🙏👍😊
Thank you so much Mark! We're at the doctor's office right now actually! She just had more imaging done and we're about to go into his office for an update.
Wish you, your wife and your coming child the best. God bless! Thoughts and prayers to all of you. 🙏
Thank you so much. I can't tell you how much that means to me. Happy New Year!
I pray you and your girlfriend are well.. Happy News Years... Great Licks. I Pray she and the baby will be fine and healthy. GOD BLESS.
Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. I mean it! Happy New Year!
i need to get a Mysterbrain in your hands, if you like to comp the Setz! :) great vid btw. I'll share on my #gretschmafia page
Oh dude awesome! I didn't even know about that page, thank you! And yeah I KNOW!!! Man, I really want a Mysterybrain! I've heard so many good things. I've never even seen one in real life, hah!
God bless you and your girlfriend at this time of stress. Appreciate you putting out this video, both the guitar stuff and the update. Hang tough.
Thank you. I really appreciate that. Fingers crossed that everything will be okay!
Good too see you back
Thanks Steve! It's good to BE back!
Cool licks. Thanks for posting 👍
Thanks Hugh!
Super lesson. Thank you for showing how to play it. 🙏🙂
Excellent!
Thanks man!
what Gretsch are you playing
That one is a G5622T. It's the older model from a few years ago with the Super HiLo Tron pickups. Made in Korea. The new ones are made in China, with different pickups.
Great!!… but how would it sound on a tele..?…
Hah! I think we know the answer to that. Wish I had one. I love the old uncompressed tele sound the most. Like Don Rich and Redd Volkaert's sound.
Soooo good!
Thanks!
Good stuff, Jeff. Discovered this in the late 80s and eventually it helped me answer a Jeopardy question correctly and impress my dad. 😂 Never actually worked on this and it is a great change of pace as you mentioned 🤠 Thanks.
😂 haha! Way to impress your dad! Lol this took me a while to get smooth when I was learning it. Those pinky jumps are tricky!
New shit. Love it. When are you going to do Spanish picking
Hey thanks man. But ooof. That's a whole different style and that classical console (Spanish) is a whole other level. That would take me years upon years to get good at that.
Yngwie would approve.
Haha thanks man! Oh Yngwie...
Thanks mate
Some amazing playing, a vignette intro to the video, and Randy Rhoads hanging out over your right shoulder... Jeff, you're the man!
Thanks Paul! That intro video idea came to me as I was setting up, haha. I keep a picture of Eddie shredding it up under a spotlight on his knees as well. I used to keep Randy and Eddie together. I should move them. Back together again. Shred buddies, lol.
I always love that tune. Good job man 👏
Thanks man! It's so rocking!
Wow! So different 😊
William!!! Thanks duderino! Don't get snowed in in Colorado buddy!
Nice tone 👍🏼
Thanks! That Guild guitar really sounds like an old honky tonk guitar with those super dry sounding Franz P90's. I love it!
👏👏👏👌
Okay, I need to be able to do this!
Well Paul, the good news is that you're already a Patreon member! Hah! Get back over there! Thanks for everything duderino!
👍👍👍
Excellent! Maybe you did and I couldn't find it - did you do a lesson for this one?
Man.... I have not done a lesson for this one. I've been meaning to for a while now. And I've sat down in front of the camera a few times to try to make one but it ended up becoming REALLY long and jumbled. I have a new idea for HOW to teach this song/arrangement though. And the cool thing about my idea, is that it can be applied to TONS of songs in this style. It's not going to be "here's the tab for what I played so you can play it exactly like this". Because of this thumb picking style, it's much more than that. It's too much to explain here, but I'll try to put together a lesson on this here pretty soon. I also have way better recording equipment now so it'll be high quality too.
@@sixstringtwangin 100% understand. Looking forward to it if you do!
Excellent except your descending double stops in the first solo are incorrect. The person in this video plays them perfectly..... th-cam.com/users/shorts2Uh3X-g7FQY?si=NP97iAx-PjVGKVZ5
Very good 😊
Thanks!
hi congratulations, you've achieved this piano effect if you can say so. Thank you
Thank YOU! YOu ain't rocking unless you're tickling the Ivory's! Lol
@@sixstringtwangin I wanted to know what effect you use to simulate the piano
Oh! Lol sorry. I'm not using anything. I'm just playing along with the recording. Just plugged into my amp on a slightly clean setting. So what you're hearing is the original recording with me playing over too of Ray.
There IS a pedal like that that exists though. I played through one at a guitar center a long time ago. I forget what it's called but it makes your guitar sound JUST LIKE a piano.
@@sixstringtwangin thanks
Great video man. Definitely a jumping audio and video on the whole thing man. And yeah I could hear it even though you weren't plugged in at the end. I really like that first song that you were playing. The Hendrix Stevie Ray Vaughan thing with a rockabilly country twist. I look forward to hearing your new videos❤
Thanks Shawn! I have been slacking so much on putting out material because of all the time I've spent learning this stuff, and just other life stuff as well lol. It's going to take longer to edit videos now, but I think once I get a firm grasp on the new system it'll get easier.
fantastic
Hey Mate…I’m with you on this one…skip the lightning and Thunderclap! Lol Thanks!
Sounds great. A lesson would be cool👍
World class guitarist!
Thanks, Jeff, I will check this out soon.
Hey right on, thanks CC! Great to hear from you!
Sounds great! What type of Delta Blues amp are you using? I’ve been trying to decide between a 115 or 210.
This is the 1x15. I love this thing.
Awesome. D#9 into D is cool
Sounds great dude!❤
I don't care if it's one of your older videos. Still love to watch you pick dude.❤
Awesome, that was clean
Keep it rockin 🎸
Nice piece of guitar playing dude. I dig it❤
Thanks man! Grab the freebie lesson of this on my Patreon. It's got TABS.
Dude you just totally improved a classic!❤ That's hard to do and you did it bro 🤘
Thanks Shawn! That was one of my first videos haha.
@@sixstringtwangin well that's one heck of a way to start some dude. You've always had solid material.
i respect so very much your determination to play and learn and show the song exactly how it was played.
Thank you! I forgot about this one! I really was wanting to make a lesson for this because all of the other lessons I've seen on TH-cam are only partially correct. They'll get you about 80% there. I was able to find an isolated guitar track for this live performance and I sat down on my bed and worked at it until I got to what I thought was exactly what Rick was doing. I'm actually in the process right now of setting up some new recording equipment to make better videos. I'll put this song on my to- do list once I get it all set up! Thank you again, I really appreciate it!!
@@sixstringtwanginthat would be awesome!! i’d love to see a lesson. i can definitely relate to sitting down for hours transcribing a song perfectly the way it was played so i respect the dedication very much
This video helped a ton. Thanks!
Awesome man! Thanks for diggin it!
Nice to see you back in the game. Love your new fiddle! I’ve had the RHH 6120 for quite a few years and love it, but have always been enamored by the pick up combination in the Eddie Cochran 6120 as well. I think you’ve got to keeper there, Jeff! 🤠
I was looking at that one too, and I'm not even really a fan of that band! Lol. It does look like a really great guitar though. I'd love to have a guitar with an ebony finger board again. If that guitar came with this pickup combination I would have bought it!
@@sixstringtwangin - I hear ya…. I do like Jim and RHH but as much as I like both Eddie and Jim, my affinity for those two guitars would be there regardless. Such great tools and let’s face it the aesthetics are next level as well.
Oh totally! Those guitars are the most beautiful that have ever been made. And man.... I LOVE the pickup combo. I had to adjust the pole pieces in the dynasonic and put a shim under the P90, but after I did that, holy COW. It sounds so good. And if you run it through some overdrive it screams.
Great video man. Cool country picking. Now I'm going to go super nerd on you. Was able to zoom in on your headstock. You've got an Eddie Cochran gretsch! You're awesome dude!❤
Haha you're right, it is an Eddie Cochran model. It was much debated. I was thinking of buying a Setzer Smoke and taking the pickups out and putting in this combination, just because there are things about the Smoke model that I know I would like, but I couldn't justify spending that much money on the entirety of that haha. Maybe one day I still will. Thanks man!
That´s the one I was waiting for! Saw that on Facebook today and subscribed immediately! Didn´t know you before.
Oh that's awesome! Glad to see you here on TH-cam! Thanks!
