Scott and spectrum. What are the lifeful trip and stumble as I came across shop chat channel. My name is David and I was a barbershop from 1973 until the early 1980s. Huntington West Virginia was my home at the time and I sang with the local chapter there. Life took me a new directions and I haven’t been an active barbershop in many years, however I have been a fan and so enjoy listening to many of the top performing quartets and chorus here on TH-cam. I’ve subscribed to your channel and anticipate enjoying your interviews. I see you have a two-part interview with the Bluegrass Student Union. Antidotal story here, my wife on our honeymoon in 1974 drove nonstop from Key West Florida back through Louisville in order to hear the Louisville thoroughbreds and those rotten kids in their 1974 Christmas show. Additionally, the student unions first out of district show performance was for our Huntington West Virginia chapter show the spring of 1974. It was a thrill for them to perform on the same card with the dealers choice. How lucky were we to have a past and future champions on our 1974 show. The union may not remember me, but I’m sure they remember performingwith the dealers choice. Keep up the good work. And blessings to all barbershop.

Hey, I might add I was the MC of the shows during my tenure with the Huntington chorus. I had a background and broadcasting and radio and TV. I was blessed to spend some time with both quartets and what a blast for a young man who thoroughly thrilled to be barbershoping.

I LOVE Bluegrass Student Union. I have loved them since I was a boy. I saw them live and was so impressed with the volume of sound and the pure harmony. I lost my CD and would love to get another one if I could. Really, I would love to get a recording of everything BSU every did! They are simply THE BEST!

When I sing Bari, I find to prefer to stand next to the Tenor, it's easier to harmonize. Depending on the arrangement, standing next to a Lead or Bass throws me off a bit, or I need to put in an earplug

My father has recently experienced some severe health issues and it has taken away much of his former independence. It's funny that up until his challenges, I'd not given much thought to my parent's mortality. I'm 43 years old and my parents are in their early 70s. I'm grateful I still have my parents but I know that time with our loved ones is not unlimited. I was touched by the lyrics and beautiful delivery of Signature of 'Dancing with my Father'. Peace and love to everyone out there.

I've known Brandon for almost 25 years. It is so comforting to know that he has retained the HISTORY of the sound! A lot of what's sung today is not what was done years ago.

As someone who sang baritone for almost 15 years in a non-barbershop quartet, barbershop baritone is sooo scary to me! It's a whole new level. But it's also so enticing!! Hopefully I'll manage to get more comfortable singing barbershop baritone in the future...

There’s so few examples (that I’ve found) of other people talking about that ability to find deep meaning in art, a meaning that comes from a place of empathy for others. For me it happens in films, and that’s why I went to film school. I’m able to place myself in the shoes of a character and feel it so deeply that I usually prefer to watch stuff alone because I think I might be distracting to others if something gets to me. Music can do it too, but I don’t have the ability to hear lyrics very well so if a song hits me then it’s usually because the singing is so pure or the music itself is inspired. Barbershop quartets are a treasure trove for those kinds of moments, for me at least.

A bass is lead without the upper range is also where I find myself. Two back to back bouts of laryngitis killed what falsetto I had, and stripped several notes from my upper range, but added a half octave to my lower. Being that I had quit singing barbershop I just never made the effort to properly correct it. When I’m good form, my range is Bb1 (although I can passably hit but not really sing down to D1) to D4 (hitting C5, but not that you’d want to hear it). Favorite bass singers, b-shop and not: Glenn Miller for his lower range and his power, Geoff Castellucci for his range and timbre, Rick Staab for singing bass like a lead, and Jim Henry for his timbre and range -which I didn’t initially know he had until I heard a couple of songs where he was able to drop into the basement. I found your channel by accident, and I’m glad I did. You’re showcasing all my favorites. Well done!

Thank you so much for these great interviews, your insightful questions and letting the guys really delve into their experiences. They are my favorite quartet of all time, my boyhood barbershop heroes and I was privileged to sing with them in Thoroughbred Chorus, including some time under Jim Miller.
