Build videos, how to videos, experimental boards and sessions on homemade surfboards and fins.
Building A Wood Pallet Surfboard
For this build, I wanted to challenge myself to build a surfboard with a single pallet. Wood pallets are easy to find and often free. So it's a great resource to experiment with even if the wood is terrible. This board ended up only being 3'3"x 16.5", more of a body board than a surfboard. I could have used more than one pallet to make it bigger however I wanted to test the waters and see if I could make something only using one pallet. Will it surf? who knows. If it does I know I can make something better using more than one pallet. Going with a sealer instead of glassing may cause some issues but I really wanted to make this as cheap as possible. If I need to I can always glass it in the future or make another board.

Making Surfboard Fins from a Cracked Log
มุมมอง 9816 หลายเดือนก่อน
These might be my favourite fins I've made! I made them from a cracked maple log that I filled with black epoxy. To fill the cracks I made a mold that I then poured black epoxy into, similar to how epoxy river tables are made. For these surfboard fins I wanted to use up the fibreglass tabs I had made in a previous fin video. The fibreglass tabs are made with 36 layers of 6oz fibreglass and epox...

Surfboard Fin Panel Experiment Gone Wrong: Lessons Learned

For this fin panel I wanted to try an idea I had to speed up doing multi-colored panels. I want to find a way that is faster than waiting for each layer to cure before doing the next. So I came up with the idea of trying to separate all of one color with plastic and then wait for it to gel. Then try to time it just right so that they would release and I would be able to do the next color so it ...

I Broke My Surfboard fins So I Remade Them

Making Rear Quad Surfboard Fins - Fin Friday
It sounds like you made many fins. Some fins are big. Did you have any trouble with fins breaking board by ripping? how do you strengthen fin box areas?
I've made some large fins but nothing too big yet. I use the 3/4 future fins boxes in my boards and strengthen them with 1 or 2 glass patches around the box when I glass the board. Sometimes a patch under the box and using glass bubbles in the epoxy. I'll also sand and flame treat the boxes. I've blown out the bottom out of a few boxes from hitting rocks but so far no issues from large fins.
ok that works for the side fins but how would you do with the central or side double foil fins in the case of the twin fins of the fishes
For centre fins you just set the arm so the fin is at 0 degrees. Double foiled fins work, you sometimes need to prop the tail edge out with something so its angled correctly. Every time I've done centre fins I've just had to set the arm so the fin is set to 0 degrees. The arm is really just so the fin leans against it, its not supporting much weight so you don't need a large surface against it.
Oh my god that's so cool!!! You've done a fantastic job! I've been making hand planes and am just looking into whether pallet wood might work. Makes sense as they're easy to get hold of. Cheap, sustainable and environmentally friendly material. Might sandwich between veneer. Anyway. Love the fact you've proven it can work. Thanks so much! Hi from Cornwall UK!
Thanks! I'm still trying to test it out, I havn't had much for waves to work with. I have had a leak in it which lead to a small delam from the wood warping when drying from the leak. Better glue would have made it a non issue but I used what I had. Verdict is still out if this board works or not haha. If I glassed it or used epoxy/waterproof glue it. It would have been a better choice. Pallet wood is far from ideal but being free, and with how this turned out even with the small leak I think its worth trying a larger build. I love the idea of the sandwiching it between veneer, if you try it you will have to let me know how it goes!
Hi great vid, how do you make the fin tab mould?
@@toniachetwood8887 I have a video on the silicone molds but not the HDPE ones. All it really is, is the tab shape milled out of HDPE with a set screw to hold the fin in place. I'll be making some fiberglass tab videos in the future, maybe I'll add an HDPE one.
Beautiful work as always👌 So ive been watching some Japanese wood working stuff and seeing the long uniform shavings that come from their block planes i wondered if its possible to make a board from laminating those shavings. Just a wood laminated board i guess but maybe paper mache style, could even lightly mist a pile of wood shavings with something to form a rough blank. Anyway look forward to seeing how that pallet surfs😊
Thanks! I could see it working if you lamed it into a sheet, then used it with an internal frame. Maybe some form of resin infusion could work to make the sheet. Would be really cool board but a ton of work.
Go BROOO!
Yeeeww!
I was literally talking to my dad like 3 weeks ago about this as an idea and he said he didn’t think it’d work too well, glad to see someone do it and do it well. I’m gonna have to try to build one now.
Id definitely go for a larger board with more pallets this is going to be a real challenge to surf. However its a fun project and an easy way to test out the chambered board process on budget. Worst case you end up with a cool wall hanger or turn it into a coffee table.
@@WaveWasters no yeah I was thinking of a staggered pattern like bricks to get a longer piece and after something a bit smaller to make sure it works how I want it, going with a longboard design
That intro transition was dope! You're a great TH-camr Matt! Wow...that planer got a workout...you say "cheap"...that planer is worth it's weight in gold! As mentioned by others, your video production is A1. That...was a LOT of work my friend! Your dedication to a project is admirable. Lepage should have sponsored you for this project...lol! As with others, I am SO STOKED to see you surf this thing! Yeewww! 🤙 Cheers, John
Thanks John! First attempt at surfing this was a bust, I think its going to need the right conditions to surf it. Fun project either way and hopefully the next test goes better!
@@WaveWasters Awww...sorry to hear that...bummer! You can surf a door so you will get it, I'm sure! When you do, make sure there's a camera rolling...lol! Cheers, John
Awesome project dude, the video production is off the charts
@@GoodRoads thank Chris! This one was more work to put together than I wanted, hopefully the next one is easier. I keep checking your Channel to see if theres new videos, hopefully I see one pop up soon😛
@@WaveWasters Taking my time getting back into it so I don't do another false-start, but I definitely want to get back to projects soon!
@@GoodRoads Awesome! take your time its a grind to stay consistent and you don't want to burn yourself out
Nice job. I plan to make a balsa board down the line. 🤙🏼
@@allsurf That would be awesome! Do you think you will make a video of the build?
@@WaveWasters Definately. I’m way behind on editing 2 board builds as I’ve been busy remodeling our home for a year but would definitely film that.
@@allsurf editing is always the slowest part, it's a lot more work then people realize. I'm stoked to see your builds when you post them!
@@WaveWasters Thanks. Got to put my film school and editing background to use although Final Cut Pro will take time to dial in.
@@allsurf I have the same background, I still miss the old final cut pro 😆

Thank! I don't think I'll surf these fins in it, as I want to sell them. As soon as we get waves, it's been so flat lately haha.
Looks awesome! I hope you got to test it!
Thanks Laura! Hopefully there is some good waves soon to test it out.
Nice, been waiting for this video. Always wanted to make a chambered board, and I love the single pallet challenge.
@@callalilycollective Thanks! It was a lot of fun to make, using the pallet wood took a lot of the stress away. It may not surf well but it was a great way to test out the chambering process without spending much money.
This is nice. Just a suggestion that i saw from some wood board. you should have put some foam inside to make it more buoyant.
@@asce2273 Thanks! I went back and forth on adding foam to it especially where I didn't glass it. In the end I decided to go without. Partly so if it leaks really bad I can dry it out quickly, and partly to minimize materials used. Maybe for the next one I'll try adding foam, I have lots of scraps I could use.
How would foam inside make it more buoyant? You're adding more mass to the same volume. Maybe it would help with thermal swelling and contracting to lower the loading on the glue joints. I could see it adding some structural support on deck loading for hollow frame and skin would board though.
@@callalilycollective Only makes it more buoyant when it eventually leaks, which is why I considered it😆. Other wise your just adding a little bit of weight/structural support. I could also be wrong though.
@@WaveWasters continuing to play devils advocate, won’t open cell foam increase the water retained once it does leak? Adding a vent and airing it out without foam would probably reduce water weight more.
But this is chambered wooden board, with this method of construction you usually won't add in any foam. What you mean probably is different type of construction when they shape a board out of EPS foam and then they glue on the wooden rails and vaccuum bag the wooden skin deck and bottom... if I am wrong I would be happy to be corrected. Cheers. Anyway Matt great build! Looking forward to watch some surfing vid of this little beast :)))))
Looks like a really fun board! Great design. What are the dimensions?
5'1.5" I can't remember the exact with but it was around 20" at the widest point.
You should stabilize the limbs before casting.
@@lawrencefranck9417 I'd love to get into stabilizing wood, I just didn't have that type of resin at the time. In the future I'd like to get some to try out
I always wanted a zoom lens for an action camera. I thought its as easy as getting an adapter but I guess the focals doesnt add up.
Depending on the lens you want to add it could work without as much modding. Lenses with longer flange distances than the m12 lenses would be easier to adapt. Big thing is finding a lens with an Ir filter or finding a separate ir filter for the lens.
Going to attempt something similar by cutting down an old ruined set of futures to the size of the honeycomb core and glassing over it in the same process you used to enlarge them into a twin setup that already has the tabs built in. I’ll let you know how it goes! Thanks for the vid
Sounds like a fun project, definitely let me know how they turn out!
Nice. Are they heavy?🤙🏻
Maybe a little compared to wood fins but to fibreglass about the same. They are pretty thick though
The amount of thought and work that goes into your projects makes my head spin! I also love the way you work with what you have in your shop...example: your bandsaw...using it to it's max! I like the masking tape squeeze effect on the fin joint! Vacuum bagging too...wow! PDC Matt!!! ( Pretty Darn Cool ) Cheers, John 👍✌
Thanks John! Have to work with what I have available, hopefully some day I can upgrade the bandsaw to cut bigger logs.
Have you tried some glass roving strands around the fin before putting them in between the fibreglass? Ive seen that happen a lot with glass on fins and comes out beautiful.
When I started making fins years before I started the channel I used roving a lot. Some of my best fins used it but I always found it hit or miss. I think its because I was using slow set epoxy it would shift a little or cause the glass to bubble. I found it worked best glassing one side of the fin then the other. Once I got into vacuum bagging even with this crude setup. I found I was getting better results glassing both side of the fin at once without roving. It also cut glassing and sanding time in half with better results aside from some leading edge bubbles. I've been experimenting with resin infusion which may be an even better option.
Excellent work as always !
Thanks! Batching the fins out has been really fun. But i'm itching to make some more weird projects.
A Canadian fin out of maple. That’s a bit on the nose. That came out sick though 🤙🤙🤙 and nice glamour shots in the end.
Hahaha this is from a maple tree that fell on my garden, can't let free wood goto waste. I should make a fin with maple syrup in it, might give the fin a little more hold haha. Thanks! It's hard to come up with ideas for glamour shots so this has kinda been my go-to. May need to try to get some at the beach next time.
@@WaveWasters time for some chemical engineering. Can we make a water insoluble and UV stable maple syrup based resin. Beach glamour could go, but the studio once does set a good mood. Maybe a beach glamour at the end of your surfing videos. I've said it before, but always appreciate your surfing/action followup videos to your builds.
oh you're Canadian too, thats so cool! I'm toe dipping into making fin out of resin and your videos are super inspiring! @@WaveWasters

beautiful day
Can't ask for much more. It's rare to get a winter day this glassy.
Those look fairly thick. Is there a fluid dynamics reason for that, or is it for easier production /strength with so much less cross section area ?
It's just how thick the parquet flooring was. I have a box of it so wanted to try it out as is. I should bring these out again to surf it's been awhile.

Thanks! I definitely want to make some more with these veneers they come out pretty cool
That looks super fun. Like a skimboard with bottom channels.
This board might be my favorite, I need to try to reshape it before it gets too damaged or I loose my templates haha. Bottom channels work really well for how wide this board is.
No such thing as too cold to surf !
Once it hits around -22c you really start questioning what your doing doing in the water.
@@WaveWasters still worth it though lol
@@erinh2077 when the waves are good it is, otherwise it's too cold 😆
This was super helpful and very informative. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful. Just make sure you do a small test before you use it on a project. Some inks and resins don't mix well and will bleed.
Hey Matt, Very cool! Man, that's a lot of work. I love the way the different colours show up in the different layers. I hope they hold up to the stress that you are going to give them at the joint. I think you have that covered though ( pardon the pun ). Cool dust collector under your fin sanding vise! Cheers, John
Thanks John! The colours came out better than I expected, I have lots more so I'm going to have to make some more with them. They should hold up fine based on my experience with other fins I've made that are more fragile. However if they are surfed into the sand or rocks they could break like most fins.
@@WaveWasters I trust you know what you are doing...you've made enough of these things. Yeah, surfing fins into the beach, sand or rocks isn't really good for anything...lol! Although, I abuse my Wavestorm and haven't had any problems with it...that's part of the reason that I got that type of board...teehee! Carry on with your cool stuff! Cheers, John
@@funafter5081 The wave storms are great for that, kinda wish I had a beater or something similar I could use in the rocks. My finless board has taken too much of a beating from it haha.
really good job and nice video.
Thanks! They have been fun fins to surf
I have this type of little zoom lens but couldn't get it to work on an SJcam 4000, just get a blurry mess, maybe I'm getting the distance from the sensor wrong. My lens has an aperture that I keep wide open, if that matters. I gave up and now use that lens as a handheld microscope, it's pretty powerful when you look through the wrong end.
Yeah it sounds like the distance to the sensor is off, maybe try unscrewing the lens a little at a time, after you screw it all the way in. My little zoom lens came with a spacer on the threads with that off I was able to get it to focus. Also try using the zoom to see if different ranges work better than others. On mine there is a little bit when all the way zoomed in that doesn't focus. Have you tried any other lenses?
Loving how the mini sim' flies
Same although its too fast at times haha
Looks cold there. Always like your performance/follow up videos to your builds.
Not to bad, when this was filmed I think water was still above 40f. Thanks! I'm think I may do some similar videos on old boards since I'm not sure what builds I'll be able to to do next year. Luckily I have two more fins ones filmed.
