    So from London, why did you go to Madrid? I thought it would have been easier to go by train from England to France. I ask because we are the early stages of planning our trip for next year.

    • @briangaller
      @briangaller 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Andy! Thanks for the question. Our flight was from NYC to Madrid, London was just a layover. I had considered NYC to Paris (I think it also had a layover in London, but I can't remember). Anyway, when we were booking our flights it was cheaper and quicker for us to fly from NYC to Madrid, take a train to Pamplona, and then a bus to St. Jean than it was to fly from NYC to Paris then get a train to St. Jean. I never really considered just flying NYC to London and then taking a train from London to St. Jean. I use an app called Rome2Rio to see the travel options between two cities. Based on Rome2Rio it looks like a train from London to St. Jean would have been more expensive and a lot more time than just flying London to Madrid. However, depending on your budget, schedule, dates of travel, and starting location your options are likely to vary. There are a number of ways to get to St. Jean, but they all seem to be a little logistically tricky. Best of luck to you on your Camino next year. It is an incredible adventure.

    Great footage! I've been following your journey since I willbs starting my Camino Frances Pilgrimage from SJPP on Aug 20th! I'm going solo since my husband can't take off so much time from work:( Have you felt the yellow arrows and shells were enough to guide you along The Way? I will have international cell coverage (we live in New Mexico) and I am also bringing John Brierley's guidebook. Also, have you felt safe? Fyi: the music is lower on this video so I can hear you better. Thanks again for sharing your journey! And for any advice and suggestions! Buen Camino!

    • @briangaller
      @briangaller 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! You will be fine going solo. The Frances route is very well marked. However, I had an app called FarOut with a map of the route. I also used the Wise Pilgrim app. I was never without GPS to keep us on track. I'm a backpacking nerd though. We didn't really need that level of navigation. We also had the Brierley guide, but only used it for the history and lore. Regarding safety, you are never really alone on the Camino. You will become part of a trail family pretty quick. Everyone takes care of each other along the way even when they don't speak the same language. It's pretty amazing. I had no concerns about safety, but I recognize it is different for men and women. Honestly, I felt more safe walking across Spain than I do in some cities in the U.S. The Spanish people are very kind and are looking out for pilgrims as well. Be sure to get WhatsApp. It is very commonly used by people to stay in touch along trail. It is also very useful for messaging albergues to reserve a spot (if necessary). We didn't normally reserve ahead because the albergues were not very full. I wish you the best of luck on your Camino. Buen Camino! Ultreia!

      @monicaveenpereguidi8529 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @briangaller Thank you so much for your quick reply!! Good to know that you had GPS all the way. I do have the Buen Camino and Wise Pilgrim apps. I booked ahead for my entire journey because I was worried places would be full; however I realize that I probably could have booked each day. I'm staying in 5 or 6 albergues, but mostly I'm staying in small private rooms (twin bed) with a private bathroom. I'm a very light sleeper and when I don't get enough sleep I start getting sick. I hope to still find my Camino family evwrn though I'm not staying in dorm style places every night. I have WhatsApp as well; we've traveled abroad a few times in the past, and taken a few cruises, so have used it before. I hope your journey was absolutely amazing! I really appreciate your advice!!

    • @briangaller
      @briangaller 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are very welcome! Everyone walks their own Camino so you do whatever makes your journey special for you. There is no right or wrong way. However, don't be afraid to change your approach if you find that booking ahead isn't the experience that you want. It does limit your options. We know of some people who booked everything ahead of time and they were always pressured to make whatever distance they planned many months in advance without knowing what they would be feeling in the moment or who they would be with. They weren't able to live in the moment and adjust their plans on the fly. Some regretted that approach others were fine with it. Just take some time to feel out what seems to be working or not and change as necessary. We really enjoyed being able to just decide our distance and accommodations on the fly. We were able to stop short or go long depending on how we felt or who we were with at the time. It allowed us to have experiences that we wouldn't have had otherwise. We were lucky that albergues weren't very full though.

    That is a slow-worm. It's actually a legless lizard that eats slugs, snails, and small insects. They are harmless, beautiful, gentle creatures who are normally quite shy and remain hidden a lot of the time as they burrow. What a treat to see one.

      @@TheBuffaloSamurai Thanks for the additional detail. It sounds like both routes are pretty comparable. We started our descent from the summit at about noon. We didn’t get to our campsite near the first lake until after 5 pm. I did a lot of slope angle analysis on Caltopo and both routes appeared to be about the same in terms of max slope. We chose the straight shot route because it didn’t have any cliffs to slide off. :-) However, I’ve always wondered if we should have taken the Skurka route.

    As an alternative, you could take (refer to Beyond Trails Guide by Nancy Palister) the South and North Black Joe passes off the north side of Wind River Peak to get down to Black Joe Lake and perhaps avoid some of the talus piles between East Temple Lake and Black Joe Lake. May I suggest a much more robust set of micro spikes if you are not going to take crampons. Hillsound offers several better choices. Even still, when the snow softens up, micro spikes can be more of a liability than a benefit. It's then that crampons shine as the all around better choice for alpine environments. There are lots of super lite choices out there from Black Diamond, Petzl etc.

      Thanks Jason. I’m glad you enjoyed it. We attempted the Skurka route. However, instead of taking his recommended traverse into the West Gulley off Wind River Peak we took the alternative traverse that is a little South and a straight shot into the West Gulley. If I make another attempt I’ll go down the traverse he recommends. We chose the straight shot because it didn’t have any cliffs along it and is a similar slope angle. However, it was very loose and sketchy.

      Hi Josh, Thanks! I’m glad you found it useful for your planning. Short answer to your question is yes. I hope to make another attempt and if I do I will probably take the other traverse down. However, since I haven’t been down the other route, I can’t really compare them. We took the straight route for two basic reasons. First, my measurements via CalTopo showed that the slope angles of both routes were very similar. Secondly, the route we took didn’t have any cliffs to fall off. The other route does skirt along a cliff. You can see that at about 33:50 in the video. Best of luck to you and your brothers.

    A friend of mine brought a Glock 19 to Yellowstone. A park ranger stopped and asked him what he was doing carrying a 9mm. He told the ranger it was protection from bears. The park ranger asked him if he shaved the front sight off of it. My friend says "no, why would I want to do that?". Park ranger says "so you can fit it in your mouth if a bear charges you". Moral of the story: upgrade to something with a little more stopping power.

    • @briangaller
      @briangaller 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      dannyrocks777 I agree with the Park Ranger. However, according to studies that I have read bear spray is actually more effective at preventing bear attack injuries than firearms. Trying to take down a grizzly with a fire arm would be like trying to put several rounds into a tennis ball sized area while the tennis ball is swinging left to right and coming at you at 30+ miles per hour. My son and I surprised a black bear at about 15 yards. I pulled my bear spray not my handgun. The bear decided to leave so all was good. I take a handgun into the backcountry as a last resort, before I die, sort of option. There are other predators that a handgun would be more effective against.
