Welcome to Astro Venture - New content every Friday.
This is a beginner-friendly astrophotography channel built around simple star trackers, DSLR/mirrorless cameras, and camera lenses. The idea being to dual utilize your photography equipment and minimize how much specialized equipment is needed.
Additionally, there will be equipment reviews, how-to instruction, recommendations, and astrophotography tips.
About me? My name is George Pandoff and I am a photographer that still loves being a photographer. I initially got hooked photographing the Milkyway. What started me down the astrophotography path was a random for the heck of it photograph into the Milky Way for no other reason than to see what I might find. What I captured, I would later learn, was a really poor photograph of the Lagoon Nebula. From there, I was hooked. So feel free to join me on this Astro Venture.

Your DSLR May Be Bleeding Light

With some DSLRs, light may pass through the viewfinder and get to the sensor possibly messing up your images. In this video, I will show you what this looks like and how to spot it in your Darks. Keep in mind, what I share also applies to your light frames.

C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS - Southern Hemisphere
มุมมอง 3.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
A couple of our viewers, @bhdamiati & @gary122 had questions about the visibility and imaging of comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS in the southern hemisphere. Thank you for asking and here you go. Good luck to everyone and I would love to see what you capture - post your images in our FB group Astro Venture DSLR.
Chasing Another Comet! C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas)
มุมมอง 7K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
There is a lot of hype around our Oort Cloud visitor, C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas). The problem is that this comet plays peek-a-boo with us and the horizon around its perihelion point and begins to exit as it rises in the northern sky. I share my thoughts on when it might be best to capture this visitor. But if you miss it, you only have to wait 26,000 years for it to come by again.

Thank you for this video. Your video helped me solidify my decision.
A full spectrum camera with a UV IR cut filter is returned to a completely normal camera.
Hola tengo una montura que no tiene conexión a asiar mini y quería preguntarte si el guiado por st4 es efectivo, gracias y enhorabuena por el vídeo es de una gran ayuda por tu parte te felicito.
Could you use an intervalometer instead of the camera to asiair. Great video
Is he using a tracker in this video or is it straight up DSLR on it's own?
Thanks for this post. For Flaming Star and the Heart and Soul I am going with 90-100 shots at 2 min. I do have an H-Alpha filter that fits into my Astro modified D810 Nikon. It is somewhat of a pain to pop that in and out while outdoors. Would it give me more detail in the Nebula or would the length of shooting be enough without that H-Alpha? Would be doing the same for the Flaming Star as well. I'm in my backyard shooting into a Bortle 3 sky. Moved out of Vegas to Pahrump. Only bad area for shooting is South of me where the main town is.
@DLMVegas Pahrump, that could have some good skies. If you've got good Skies, which I think you would there, then I would attempt it without an H Alpha filter. My night of shooting I think got squashed. I have some high thin clouds overhead.
@@astroventure2221 Thanks for responding. I've gone over a bunch of folders for the past week. One had 80+ shots with the L-Pro filter. You might be correct when you say an All Nighter with 100+ images. All I have to do is walk out the back doors and my gear is right there. Will play around once I get clear skies again. The past 4 days are continuous Chem Trails in our skies. Looking at some 5 min H-Alpha shots they don't look that much better than those with the L-Pro. Just really red......
Thank you for this great video! For an AP noob like me that‘s an amazing starting point to find objects to shoot and plan a session, especially the tools to use for knowing luminosity of the moon or the telescopius page. Thanks to passionate people like you, who take their time and create videos even of the most basic (at least for the experienced folks) knowledge, it‘s become a pleasure nowadays to learn and advance in something you enjoy. I salute you🫡 May your skies always be clear!
Just a question. Why so high iso?
With the Skyguider Pro, and not guiding, I'm limited to how long I can shoot to avoid star trails and still get enough data on my histogram, but also pick up some of the dark nebulosity around the cluster. There was a time that I was afraid of the noise, but less so with the tools available such as noise exterminator and hours of data. Ultimately it all came down to getting my histogram where I wanted it.
@@astroventure2221Thanks for a fast response 😊 I think dynamic range is very important. With a high iso we lose opportunities to get as much color and luminosity out of photos. I use skywatcher gti. I capture images with and iso 320, sp 120 sek and f5,6. My focal lenght is 350 mm ( 100-400 mm zoom lense) my camera is sony a7rv. What you think about my point here?
What dial indicator are you using to get the 60 degree rotation
been there, done that ... I can perfectly understand your pain ... On the positive side, now I know immediately what the problem is when I see those crazy starts ;)
I did shut off the VR on my Nikon lenses using a DSLR. Now I am using a mirrorless Z8 and it has built in image stabilization, I keep it on and never have any problem. It will drain the battery quicker.
Atlas was the first naked eye comet I've ever seen. I think the comet was very disappointing to those who waited for it to climb higher in the sky. I saw it on 10/15 out at a dark sky location (spiral Jetty Utah) and I thought it was amazing. I took the whole family out to see it and everyone had a good time and thought it was impressive to see. I think the hype was good, but they needed to be more honest when it started to become less visible.
Spiral Jetty would be a great site.
I completely agree with your point of this comet which is disappointing compared to the hype sir
Great video :) I'm writing this comment by the end of October and still nothing. I try to observe and document the T CrB at clear sky for about 2 months nothing. Hope to see it before it goes too low and disappears from my night sky here in Quebec, Canada. ;)
@@lexpo181 I'm doing the same as you and hoping that it happens. It will happen at some point, but apparently it doesn't care what the earthlings timeline is.
Glad you’ve managed to see it in the States. I’ve been going out for the past 11 nights here in the UK and haven’t seen it once, not once, due to cloud cover! I’ve now given up! Complete waste of time!
@@peterclarke3990 you do have it brutal in the UK with the cloud cover.
@@astroventure2221 Yes. If you want to take up Astronomy, don’t live here. It’s constant disappointment! No wonder I’ve never taken it up. You can wait weeks and weeks to see something and then have it ruined by the weather! It’s an absolute certainty! Enjoy it over there anyway. Thanks for the upload. Without these clips, I would never see it, so thanks a lot!
@@peterclarke3990 @peterclarke3990 I lived in Europe for 10 years. UK - What is this thing called Sun? Germany - What was that yellow thing we saw for a moment? Italy - How do you not know what the Sun is? Look at our tan.
What lens and focal length did you use?
@jesuschrist2284 I was at 100mm on the long end and 35mm on the short.
@@astroventure2221 ty so much
I agree, the pictures were great, the explanation of a long exposure time was needed, because people are expecting to see it due to the pictures on the internet. But the setting are necessary due to this being a once in a lifetime comet. Thank you
Thank you it’s been great viewing here in New England, definitely will try to get Sunday. I have some good captures with a bit of light pollution so with real dark sky’s should be a bonus. Have a great day thanks for sharing this.
Nice pics! Looking good for tonight! Down under. If the clouds stay away!
Did you get it? (I did)
Sure did! But had to make a mad dash 20km south as the clouds at home decided to hang around. Was naked eye visible as well as a good portion of the tail. Fantasic in binos. Used my 24mm lens for wide angle pics.
@@gary122 I was on the Central Coast, it was barely visible to the naked eye but my friend and I managed to get some decent photos with our phones (I forgot to bring my binoculars).
Beautiful shot!
Thanks for this. It is worth noting that Brisbane doesn't have daylight saving whereas most of the rest of the country does. That puts Brisbane an hour behind places like Sydney and Melbourne.
Thanks for making this video for Rachel because of the information you provided. I decided to purchase the Skyguider pro mount with the iPolar After reviewing numerous videos, reading countless reviews, your video gave me confidence to purchase a skyguider pro. I’ve watched many of your videos. Your presentation and information make it easy for a beginner to understand what you're explaining. Thanks for the great videos and keep them coming!
Wonderful video, thank you for sharing. I'm just in the infant state of getting involved with astrophotography. I'm still trying to decide on what mount to purchase. I’ll be using a Nikon z9 with a 17 to 28 f/2.8 and my 180 to 600 f/6.3 lenses with the mount I choose. The mounts I’m currently considering are iOptron SkyGuider Pro and the Sky watcher star GTi or wait an save for the EQM-35. With the iOptron SkyGuider do I need to purchase the ipolar or can I purchase a Autoguide setup. Also read there’s issues with the wedge on the. Sky Guider.
Great information. Loved that you turned the Astro Venture logo the right way up ✌🏻🇦🇺
Never even considered this :( thankyou
Make a wish right now(wish right now)
Many DSLRs, certainly the Canons I've used and owned, have a small rubber piece about the size of a postage stamp attached to the neck loop. This can be slid into grooves on the viewfinder while taking your lights and calibration frames to block out light from the viewfinder and prevent this light bleed.
It absolutely can leak thru the viewfinder. Took one time with all of my darks ruined for me to keep tape close by.
Been having fun imaging comet atlas down under...22nd, 24th, 1st and 2nd..used my 200mm lens, nifty 50 and a 14mm. 50mm frames it well on my fujifilm x-t2!. 👍🏻

Starguider Pro / Asiair mini user here, most of the issues felt very familiar. ;-)
I really wish I could get out there and image. I'm the middle of a 2 and a half week stretch of clouds. I won't have a break until Thursday and Friday. It'll be first quarter moon by then.☹
Forgot what the sun looks like 😢
@thefailedastronomer7407 that is a bummer.
Planning to see comet from this weekend lets o Hope for the best sir thank for information
Thanks again for your videos
I"m in Washington State. I think I might try the comet on Monday morning.
Good luck. I'm not hopeful due to how low.
I have no choice. I will try on the 12 or13 October with binox. I am in North NSW.
I don't really think I have a chance either until October. But I'm going to try this weekend anyway.
Good video! Dumb question: when doing the polar alignment, is the star tracker on or off? Ie: is the RA motor running?
I have mine on, but it doesn't matter. The tracker is moving so slowly it doesn't matter. And when I tweak it during the night (using the iPolar) I leave it running.
Please go clear your throat
@@AndrewStead-i9h that won't change anything. 10 hours of speaking tends to do that to a voice.
My best dates: Sept 29/30 & Oct 1st -- after that, it's competing w/the sunrise -- Then October 20th until the end of the month (probably will try more during this period, IF the comet proves to be worth it). I'm at the equator (on an island), so hopefully that helps me w/ viewing.
That's awesome. If you don't mind, what island?
