FM goodness.
I make what I like, which can change often...hence the channel name. Due to the ebb and flow of my schedule, motivation, and ideas my uploads tend to be infrequent. Currently clinging to uploads no longer than 3 months apart.
I'm mostly into FM covers in the style of the SEGA Genesis, other forms of music, pixel art, video editing, and animation.
If you decide to use an arrangement of mine elsewhere, credit in your project's description would be appreciated.

Balatro ~ Main Theme (Soundtrack Release Version) (2 × YM2151 + PCM Arrangement)
WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE
Head to www.ficklefilms.fm for even more music, art, and all things 16-bit.
An arcade-styled cover of the main theme of Balatro.
I had fun with the thumbnail and visuals effects for this one! I've heavily invested in the music side of these works since beginning in 2022 and I'm eager to increase the production value as well! The jokers were each handmade by me in Aseprite and I got my hands dirty in DaVinci Resolve's Fusion editor, playing with nodes to get the aberration and distortion effects of a CRT.
A few notes about the arrangement:
I caught the Balatro bug over the holidays at the end of 2024, and before I knew it I had sunk more than a dozen hours over only three days. The addictive gameplay is paired with an equally catchy theme tune that I saw as a great challenge.
This arrangement got me dipping my toes in instrument macros for the first time, which I have had a dull awareness of for a while but largely ignored. Fortunately, I can see now they are a great way to save labor and time for repeating some of the more complicated touches (basically anything a human performer would "emote" through their performance). The first time is always the most challenging, so I definitely expect them to appear more as I become more familiar. Having managed Balatro's theme, I can think of a song or two on my list I had previously thought infeasible that now may be achievable...
Another first marked by this arrangement is writing for three chips in the same module! As with most of my arrangements, I initially started with the Genesis YM2612 + SN76489 pairing, but the distinctive lead instrument demands varying oscillation speeds in the instrument itself which the YM2612 struggled to deliver. LFO speeds on the YM2612 are actually limited to 8 discrete values (one byte?). While I could manually move an LFO slider controlling total level of an operator in the macros tab, there was not way to program that in. Thankfully, the YM2151 has a full 256 levels to set LFO speed, so I pivoted to that. Each YM2151 chip has its own chip-wide LFO shared across all 8 channels, so I added a clone of it for accurate echoes of the lead. Finally a PCM for percussion, and before I knew it I was at three chips! Thanks to the fine folks at the Furnace Discord server for guiding me through my many questions.
As for non-technical aspects of the song, the 7/4 time signature is a real treat! It's paced slowly enough that I expect a stable 4/4 but the 4/4 + 3/4 setup and rhythm of the chords go a long way towards an ephemeral vibe.
The bass sounds real fuzzy and uniform as well which is interesting. Fun fact, the bass instrument on FM5 is actually an instrument from Sonic 3's drowning theme, pitched as low as it can go!
Progress on the chiptune tutorial is slow but steady! All my content so far hasn't required a script, so like everything I do I learn as I go and hope it will be easier in the future lol. Essentially I want to make the video I wish had been available when I started learning to make chiptunes, and I to create a truly comprehensive breakdown of my entire creative process from first appraising a song's potential to uploading to online platforms. In order to create the best video (and deputize y'all to create more good music for me to listen to, ha) I'm considering uploading the general bullet points to the Getting Started in Chiptune page at ficklefilms.fm. If you're interesting in being a part of the process, I'd welcome any feedback and suggestions at the channel email.
If you are a fan of covers like this, feel free to check out my previous works! I like a variety of games, so there is a decent selection.
If you have any suggestions or tips about the composition please let me know, I'm looking to improve!

WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE An arcade-styled cover of Thousand March, a level theme from Pizza Tower. Here's some WAR to go with your love this Valentine's Day ;) A few notes about the arrangement: The original version of this song is a synth delight reminiscent of Justice, Carpenter Brut, and Hotline Miami! The level it plays in, WAR, is one of my favorites and definitely a stand...

WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE A Genesis-styled cover of Paradise and Survival, a level theme from Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. I played this particular entry on my 3DS but have ye...

WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE A Genesis-styled cover of the main theme from Lost Patrol for the Amiga home computer. WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE A Genesis-styled cover of The Death that I Deservioli, Lap 2 theme of Pizza Tower. A few notes about the arrangement: This tune is so fast and full of energy! It kinda reminds me of Sonic 2's special stage theme, but much more manic and gritty; Sonic is running for a Chaos Emerald, but Peppino is running for his life! Definitely an iconic song from the ...

WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE A Genesis-styled cover of Tubular Trash Zone, a level theme from Pizza Tower. A great bass line, iconic samples, and distortion guitar solo are what cemented this one among my top picks. A la...

WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE A Genesis-styled cover of Puzzle from HOME's album, Falling into Place. WATCH WITH HEADPHONES FOR BEST EXPERIENCE A arcade-styled cover of Corridors of Time from Chrono Trigger. A few notes about the arrangement: This is my first attempt at using the "arcade" console in Deflemask. For songs like this with chords held for long periods of time, the extra two FM channels over the Genesis' YM2612 are really handy. The five sample channels also make percussion a cinch, ...

hittin the flush five with this one
very good !!
T his is great
Beautiful.
The drums sound great!! What is the origin of those samples?
I'm glad you like them, I went though several before settling on the final ones! The kick is Kick 27 from the Zero G - Disc 1 sample CD, which I'm pretty sure was used in most songs from Jazz Jackrabbit 1's soundtrack. The snare and hihats are pulled from the SampleFocus website and mixed with rim clicks and some other stuff, and the toms' sources have been lost to time 😶🌫️
i love the bass so much holy shit
perfect
I hear that cuica from Microsoft midi
What is that drum sample? It sounds really nice, almost like the Sonic 1/2 snare but a bit tonally different
Used in this song it's Snare 25 from the ZERO G - DISC 2 sample library, which a lot of SEGA games like Jet Set Radio and the Sonic Rush titles pulled from, mixed together with a clap sample from Kid Chameleon that I adore.
Sounds great! 🤘🏻😎🔥
You did not use TI SN46789?
That's right! In the tracker portion of the video you can see the four rightmost columns for the SN76489 have no note data. It just didn't seem necessary for this one
damn this is great!
Can you do crystals too?
Holy shit this peak
20/10 Great goob man
Now you're talking! Impressive. Hotline Miami is THE synthwave leading forces for it's popularization, and that the Miami2 got even better tunes. That said, I do feel you🤣, dem got DAWs with all the effects, sidechains they like. Try recreating them....... like where do you start/how to get it done. Not to say it takes sooo long to do. Do you plan making Miami2 songs sometime later?
Maybe? I have listened to some of them, particularly Jasper Byrne's Decade Dance and Night Driver, as well as Acid Spit by Mega Drive. I expect ambient parts would be challenging to design instruments for, but that kind of practice would make some other songs on my list much more manageable so it's probably worth the time investment. The best I can guarantee is that work on a Miami 2 song wouldn't begin until I finish two songs that are currently in progress, at the earliest. But if you want some Miami 2 now go check out Galcha's work! They've done Roller Mobster and Le Perv already, and both sound great.
@@FickleFilmsplease do a quixotic remix literally nobody does it. Its such a unique song and I want to see other people's takes on it
R&B song.
Tubular Trash Zone Act 1
goddamn now I want an arcade machine of Pizza Tower
You and me both lol
That bass is just so... kick ass. XD
Got one. Crisis War Zone. Crisis City, but during a heavy assault by Eggman/Robotnik's troops.
When you put the final boss in the bonus stage.
I can't think of a Sonic zone title for this one. But it sounds awesome regardless. xD

Trully bone chilling
Legitimately some of the best AA covers I've seen - you manage to capture the vibe of the song so well, these are amazing!
The file doesn't work for me.
Could you clarify which file is causing problems and what the problem is?
@@FickleFilms .vgm and .dmf it says it broke
This is a very nice cover. Stays more accurate to the original, and has a nice choice of instruments too. I have done this song before, but it was fused with another great final boss theme.
When the shit is retro 💩👾
OH MY GOD THAT BASS SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE THE BASS FROM SONIC 1/2
It’s actually from Toejam and Earl. Not everything FM has to be Sonic
@@solarflare9078 i know but I haven’t played T&E and as I’m a sonic fan that’s the first thing that came to mind
Toejam and Earl bass and Sonic 1/2 bass are slightly similar

I THOUGHT that bass sounded familiar…
Are you planning on doing Thousands March? I bet that one slaps hard on the Genesis
I have actually started a module for that one, I can't promise it will be finished any time soon but I'm definitely considering it. Still tweaking the leads and trying to pick apart the original.
