Episode 5 Shopping for a boat
มุมมอง 8964 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the 2nd start of a new journey that began over a year ago in San Francisco. I began my love for sailing in high school with my best friend, we flipped his 2 person sailboat on our community lake many times over the years. 25 years later the ocean called me and I began sailing lessons in San Francisco when I was relocated because of my job. Corona hit, I lost my job, I left SF and headed...

    Both the Pearson and the Sabre had the traveler in the cockpit just aft of the companionway. No good. Catalina has it on the cabin top, out of the way, much better.

    Do not try to dry your boat up with butyl tape that's an old school compound... Through deck hardware fittings and port lights I recommend 3M 4200 And boat life life seal... Comes in black silver and clear never use silicone...

    I’m thinking you should use your safety shut off cord while using motor on tender. Unless you want to be another utube video. Just in case you fall in water, your tender will keep going otherwise!

    I stumbled on this and am so happy! I just bought the Triton for my Catalina 30 and am waiting on delivery. Believe me, I was probably as excited as you were to see the transducer fit the old thruhull fitting cause I have the same old one!!!!! I have had multiple sleepless at night worrying about this. I was elated when the display came on for you too, I can 100% empathize. I sail on the Chesapeake where depth knowledge is critical and i have had none which freaks me out. This was very inspiring as I can hopefully probably pull this off using your lessons learned. Cheers m8 and happy sailing!!!!!

    Your dinghy was porpoising due to it trying to fall off plane, or so it seemed in your video. Try to tilt your outboard down. There should be a stainless steel pin on the lower part of the transom mount with a series of holes in an arc pattern. Also, the outboard could be mounted too high and the prop could be pulling air down from the surface of the water causing the porpoising. I just caught up on your videos. I'm in Spartanburg, SC, and looking for my first sailboat. Good work bring your Catalina back into shape.

    You’ll love the triton 2 system. All information with the one dst810 transducer. I opted for the wireless wind sensor package which is very convenient. I later added the vulcan 7 and with its built in gps it shares on the n2k network and the triton 2 mfd displays everything. Hate to hear you got a bad transducer but with any electronics it can be a crapshoot. Looking forward to future videos. Fair winds

    • @hiPeeks

      How does the wireless wind sensor work? does it power itself using wind to an internal battery or something?

    • @Flynghi
      @Flynghi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hiPeeks it has a lithium battery in it. I have had to replace it once. It has a small connection on it i had to transfer to the new battery. No issues other than that.

    • @hiPeeks

      @@Flynghi awesome bro, thanks for info. Would you have just done the Vulcan 7 or 9 instead now that you've added one yourself?

    • @Flynghi
      @Flynghi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hiPeeks i know i said said vulcan 7 but it was actually the vulcan 12. Same system just the screen was 12” instead of 9 or 7. And I added the 12 bc i got it at a discount rate cheaper than the 7 actually. But if i was to do it all again id still have the 12 with the triton mfd bc i have them set up on different screens so i dont have to toggle one screen for what im looking for. I actually have a spot to add another mfd for the autopilot.

    • @Flynghi
      @Flynghi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hiPeeks if you’re on a budget amd coastal sailing id do the triton 2 with 1 mfd and have an ipad set up for gps and navigation. Whats cool is the vulcan 12 has a wifi network so i can mount ipads or just keep one handy to look at whatever i want through the vulcan wifi. If you have a couple extra grand to throw at some electronics 100% id do lithium first then would come the vulcan system. VEry adaptable. Very intuitive. Excellent interface. Last thing you want to be doing when youre in a bind is plugging away at a chartplotter trying to figure it out.

    I’ve been enjoying your videos! After being boatless for about 25 years, my wife and I are going to begin searching for a retirement boat this coming week in Florida, and the C36 is at the top of our list. I ran across an article that describes a steering failure on a 1984 C36 and an upgrade from Catalina that addresses a weakness in the system. Thought you’d be interested in case your boat didn’t receive the update. Here’s the link: www.equipped.com/0698rescue.htm Best wishes for continued fun on your boat.

    After watching the rest of the video , you really need to check ever through hull fitting , from what I saw , some only had one hose clamp , must be two and Opp to each other . Fittings look like plastic . I would only go for bronze . Costly but worth it . A job for your next haul out . You can do it your self .

  • @adriangleprin6949
    @adriangleprin6949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    And double clip at 180 deg to each other .

  • @adriangleprin6949
    @adriangleprin6949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes I agree , we have lived aboard for 13 years and only the sea cocks when we were leaving the boat . But then we were confident in the condition of all the fittings . Only fit bronze sea cocks , brass will fail , plastic may crack and is not fire proof .
