Great Paddle/Bike Weekend Getaway 1 hour from Pittsburgh
This might be our new favorite lake for a quick paddle/bike weekend getaway! Lake Wilhelm is located in Mercer County and is about a 90-minute drive from Pittsburgh, PA. We paddled & biked the lake, camped nearby & enjoyed lunch at 2 local restaurants. This is an easy drive from Pittsburgh & offers a quiet lake & bike trail to explore in the countryside.
Did you know?
⛵ Lake Wilhelm is a 1,680-acre lake located in Maurice K. Goddard State Park & on PA game lands. With a max of 20 hp, it's perfect for paddlers.
🎣 It's a popular lake to fish with 1 marina & 7 boat launches. We launched from the Long Boom Boat Launch & Launch 1.
🚴‍♀ The lake has a 12-mile paved John C. Oliver multipurpose loop trail around the lake. It’s wide & paved & has views of the lake. Be prepared for some rolling hills.
Where we stayed:
🏕 Camp Wilhelm Campground is a cute place to camp just minutes from the lake. Its's mainly an RV campground with a few tent spots in the back of the camp so we had the tent area all to ourselves.

Where we dined:
🍔 We enjoyed delicious burgers for lunch at the quick walk-up counter at Shirley's Twin Kiss in Hadley.

🍽 Between biking & paddling, we had a delicious lunch at McCullough's Kitchen Table in Sandy Lake. The owner/chef & server were so friendly & they make everything from scratch. We definitely want to go back!!

    I've done this section of river several times, I wouldn't do it on a paddle board but you made it! If you had started 1 launch further up at Arroyo is maybe my favorite section of the Clarion with the xyz rapids and rope swing.

      haha yeah wouldn't recommend on a paddleboard but we got thru it. We went from Ridgeway to Clear Creek 2 years ago on our boards. We stayed overnight in a spot in between Y and Z, we lost a few fins and kerry got stuck in the middle of one of the rapids. It was a heck of a ride doing those rapids on our boards and we had a bear in our camp that night. Great section that we definitely want to do again, but in kayaks next time we do it.

      Oh that's so cool, I've watched a few other TH-camrs that use those rafts and always wanted to try them. After you use it a few times please let us know how you like it! Thank you for watching our channel! We started this channel to share details of our trips because we couldn't find the amount of details about trips that we were looking for when we really started to paddle a lot years ago. Thank you for watching our channel! We started making videos to share all the details of our own adventures because we had such a hard time finding good information on all these rivers and lakes in the area when we were trying to plan trips. In addition to our videos, we could suggest these: Facebook: Paddling PA and other paddling/kayaking/river groups Reddit: r/PAWilds r/kayaking www.kayakmapspa.com/ Allegheny Outfitters has a good map for Allegheny River. Delaware River and Clarion River have good maps online. Anytime we go to a state park or travel center we pick up all the state park/river maps we can. We went thru the Welcome to PA travel center near Delaware water gap last month and left with like 50 maps.

    Terrific video! Thanks so much for posting it. I’m planning on heading up there soon. I appreciate your humor and your aesthetics. Thanks for pointing out the cool campsites. This is really helpful for first time. You and your partner look like you have a wonderful relationship. One small suggestion, offered politely: it was hard to hear what your partner was saying sometimes. Maybe subtitles when appropriate. A small thing really. Also, bonus points for the Cuyahoga shout out when you were hiking the rocks. Anyway, thanks so much for posting this video; really helpful.

    • @peaks.and.paddles
      @peaks.and.paddles หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate the suggestion, and you're spot on, it's a small thing but the small things are important in videos. I've been trying to get better with the sound from both of us or use more subtitles in videos since this video. For this Minister Creek video I used a cheaper Akaso action camera, but I've upgraded to a new GoPro since then. Also, I'm probably going to buy us both microphones to use for my gopro. Love Cuyahoga!!! We've been a handful of times, and I fall more in more in love with Cuyahoga every time we go. We biked the park last year and then went back when my buddy ran a 100 mile race in the park. Will get back there a few more times next year.

    A few months ago, I commented on your previous video titled, Island Camping on the River - Kayak, Canoe, SUP camping in the Allegheny Islands Wilderness. My comment then explained my intentions to paddle the entire Allegheny river of which I completed this past June. I camped on the sand bar at the down river point of the last state park island. This was the island just up river from another island where homes are located. It was a very nice camp spot providing me a private sandy beach..

      We remember you! Congratulations on completing an awesome journey. That must've been such a great adventure. We are curious how long the whole trip took, if you had troubles around the locks and dams, and if that New york section is worth doing. Cheers!

    • @crazyhorse1634
      @crazyhorse1634 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@peaks.and.paddles Yes, it was an amazing adventure. My entire trip took 24 days (5/29 through 6/21) which included one rest day when I did not paddle at all. If I ever repeat the trip, I'll take more time. My biggest day was about 31 miles and the shortest day about 4 miles. I was concerned going through the first lock (Lock #9) but quickly found the process to be easy. You must have a 75' rope to be locked through and stand-up-paddleboards are not permitted. One of my concerns about the locks was not knowing how strong the water current would be flowing over the dam and whether I'd have to fight the current to keep from being pulled over the dam. I quickly discovered that concern to be a non-issue. One needs to understand the operation schedule and hours for each lock and should have the phone number for each lock. I usually phoned the lock attendant to inform them of my arrival and desire to pass through. The New York section was worth it for me because I wanted to paddle the entire river. Plus, that area is near my home town. However, you need to be aware of water levels during certain times of the year. River level can be low during late summer. The upper Allegheny (Coudersport to the Kinzua dam) is where I encountered the harshest weather being cold (air and water), rain, and lots of wind. BTW, Coudersport is pronounced Couder- (rhymes louder) sport. I'm willing to provide additional information to help you with such a journey.

      Hi @benbeals8479, That’s a great suggestion!! We have seen other board brands that deliver this. We are very intrigued but aren’t ready to retire our current boards. Thank you for sharing what you do. Do you have an inflatable or hard board? Are you open to sharing the fin you use?? We bought our boards with very different intentions for use…And we LOVE them & enjoy all our adventures with them & we push them to their limits. Perhaps we haven’t spent enough time looking for a solution that would fit within our fin box.

      I use an Atoll iSUP and bought my 4" flex fin from their site. However, there are several styles and sizes of flex fins out there, depending on the style of fin box that your boards use. My board uses a US Fin box. If your boards use the same style fin box that mine getting flex fins should be fairly easy and not require any changes to your boards.

    Do you remove the fin when you are in shallow water?

    • @peaks.and.paddles
      @peaks.and.paddles 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey bud, nah we don't remove the fins in shallow water. I've thought about doing it, but we usually have so much crap on our boards it would be too much of a hassle. I've done a 9-mile trip without any fins before, the board was pretty unstable, and paddling was a pain in the butt. The fins on my board are removable. I've broken three small fins and 2-3 of my big middle fin. Kerry's small fins are glued on to the board and we've had to reglue them on when they got knocked off. We keep a replacement big fin on us in case the big fin breaks.

      Haha! Yes tricky at times on our SUPs. We love our SUPs! And thanks! PA has some awesome rivers. We’ve been lucky to paddle most all of them in western PA and some beyond. We love watching your videos. The 9 day wilderness trip with your family is the cutest video! And we totally want to do the Berg Lake trail after watching your video. I (Kerry) hiked the trails in Mt. Robson, Jasper and Banff many years ago and we have that beautiful region on our radar for a camping/hiking trip sometime soon!

    My husband used to live on the Little Sewickley Creek and he was so giddy with delight when you started paddling up. Unfortunately, his house and grandparent's house are no longer there. He has many memories of being on the creek and on the Yough. Now, he always takes his kayak and our children out to fish and paddle along that same stretch of the Yough to make new memories with our children.

      That is so cool that our video brought back memories for your husband!! Every time we paddle that section of the Yough we see how far we can paddle up the creek. The Yough is. a beautiful river to paddle and wow the fish we see. Have fun with your children enjoying all the adventures & beauty on the Yough!!

    The Mon is not bad paddling, but it only flows at 1/2 mile per hour due to the locks and dams. Has some good campsites. Barge traffic is not near as bad as 20 or 30 years ago. Try 10 Mile Creek.

    OMG.... at 3:57 that is the Hallton Hilton. I went there during my college days (a long long time ago) when I was visiting Ridgway, PA just upriver. The burger is huge, delicious, and cheap. Perfect for a starving, poor college kid. Seeing it on your vid brought back some great memories. Fun trip. Looks like it got quite busy at times. Thanks for sharing... you two are great.

      Haha that's awesome, I love that you've been to that bar before and had that burger. We've paddled all the same rivers; we feel like we're reliving your college adventures! It was a great trip, but a little shock to us since we're used to not having anyone else around on the river. Thanks Butch!

    I recently switched from tent to hammock camping for situations like you shared on night one. It's super easy to stealth camp just about anywhere after dragging my boat into the woods. I'm new to PA, and it seems insane to me that we aren't allowed to do that on state public forest land. Love your vids!

    Hi folks , New subscriber here. Great video, I'm sorry you had to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a campsite that obviously isn't monitored by a camp host . Bears are opportunistic hunters , if they know there's a chance for litter and food left behind , their on it . If people would be more respectful of nature we could all get along just fine . Be safe out there and keep the awesome videos rolling out !

    I live in Riegelsville right on the Delaware. Be careful not to drink the water, there is something in the water that turns people into unhappy pink/blue haired activists. The river towns are completely infested.

    How long did it take all to plan this trip and when planning outside camping spots what else was you looking at/planning for.

    • @peaks.and.paddles
      @peaks.and.paddles 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Clarion trip took just a few hours to plan out. Since we had done it a few years ago we knew what to expect. And we knew we wanted to paddle a different section from our last time. We start with checking weather and river levels We plan trip duration - checked out the river map/mileage/launch points and went from there. We knew the mileage we could paddle each day and aligned that to the camp spots and launch points. We consider the total trip time with driving/shuttling our cars, etc. Finally, we plan out our gear, food and drinks for the type, weather & duration of trip Enjoy your next adventure!
