Flight to 13,403 with Oxygen to the Matterhorn
This was part of a flight from LSGS Sion to the Matterhorn and return. Flight was 159 km and took 45mins from the airport at 1582 feet up to 13,403 and back using O2 from 5000 feet. My O2 saturation still got quite low! Despite the big climb I managed an average speed of 213Km/h.

This is an uncut 42min video of 5 circuits at LSGS Sion today. It has several sideslips (Glissades) in it which is to lose height quickly. For those learning it is definitely worth watching. Main fault-not quite in the centre of the runway but it is 40m wide!!

I was picked up at 6am and took off at 7am finally landing at Bellegarde at 17.35 ( 1hr on UK).Total of 7 engine hours but a long time in a Gyro. I urge you to watch to the end because I made a really awful final landing at Bellegarde which I put down to being very tired!!

    why is it that the flying people all get excited about using Oxygen at 10-12k feet? In America we have a mountain known as Pikes Peak (14,115 feet) and nobody wears oxygen rigs even when racing cars up the mountain.

    • @philipgoldsmithpilot
      @philipgoldsmithpilot ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very simple, EASA stipulates that we need oxygen above 12500 feet

  • @markr.1984
    @markr.1984 ปีที่แล้ว

    They sure do have to do a lot of radio work over there! But then again I think even a gyro pilot has to be IFR rated and the gyro capable of IFR. Am I correct? In the USA, you can fly VFR and go really far with no radio coms, except at and near the airports themselves. A lot more free over here. Also usually easy to stay out of congested airspace except for around New York city and Washington D.C. and the like. And of course LA and Chicago. Lots of rural areas in the states.

    • @philipgoldsmithpilot
      @philipgoldsmithpilot ปีที่แล้ว

      This is VFR not IFR, lots of controlled airspace in Europe. Also very useful to be in touch with the FIR controllers as they always warn you of approaching traffic

    Do you have any heli experience? I would think that any autogyro experience would be great as you’re basically flying as if you were in a heli with an engine failure all the time with respect to managing rotor rpm speed ect.

    • @philipgoldsmithpilot
      @philipgoldsmithpilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heli experience doesn’t help as you only have a stick and no collective. The rotor speed is around 360-400 rpm once in flight but is a factor of forward speed of the prop that is pushing you You can’t land like a heli but more like a plane but it is quite a short landing

  • @kkiwi54

    @MisterUnicornFL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    nice trip, you taxi with the rotor spinning?

    • @philipgoldsmithpilot
      @philipgoldsmithpilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but you need to make sure the rotor is facing into the wind so that the wind doesn’t get under the rotor if the wind is more than a few knots. But then when parked wait for the rotor to be completely stationary before engine off

    Can a gyrocopter or GYRO plane glide without power.?

    • @philipgoldsmithpilot
      @philipgoldsmithpilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes as the rotor is not connected to the engine in flight the Gyro is in permanent auto rotation but only for a limited distance called the Glide ratio. But enough to make a safe landing in the event of engine failure as long as forward speed is maintained. You can’t land like a helicopter however you need a forward speed of around 60 mph to land but you can flare so you can land in a very short space 10-20 metres but need 200m minimum to take off

    • @philipgoldsmithpilot
      @philipgoldsmithpilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to get a special cable which has a socket for your large headset jack at one end and a split between a large headset jack and a usb C plug at the other. The USB c goes into the GoPro and the large jack goes into your headset port on the M24. You can find them in various places try Sportys pilot shop
