My favorites are Etchr’s Perfect (not the white canvas, don’t care for those) and for a less pricey option, the 100% cotton Hahnamule. I would like to try Koval, about as pricey as Etchr. I like Stillman & Birn Alpha for sketching, light wash. The Beta, no. I stopped buying unless I already know I like the paper. Will have to try Kilimanjaro.

Love your work. I am just learning watercolor painting as I primarily painted with acrylic. Having a bit of a tough time getting used to WC painting opposed to acrylic. Huge difference. May I ask what WC paints are you using in your videos? Thank you for your knowledge and info you provide in your videos!

Gotta say I agree with the Grinch's assessment of the Hahnemuhle Akademie book. I bought one for landscape sketching en plein air. It's awful.

Unfortunately Cheap Joes doesn’t ship out of the USA. So for most of the world they won’t be able to get the Kilimanjaro book unless they visit the US.

sometimes I look at even the easels that you attach to tripods and go 'nah'. your setup looks nice and simple and inexpensive. those darn art toolkits every time I see one I have to stop my other hand from buying one.

I am currently using the Etchr Perfect Sketchbook Signature Series with Fabriano Artistico 100% cold press watercolor paper. B5 portrait. I love it and for those of us in Europe who cannot get our hands on the Kilimanjaro, I think it is the perfect alternative without having tried the Kilimanjaro, but based on your description.

Since this video was made, Hanhemule has released a 100%cotton watercolor sketchbook. I’m interested in your thoughts on it. I DO like Cheap Joe’s paper. I also like Bee Creative 100% cotton book. It’s even harder to find.

Little late getting onto the Kilimanjaro bandwagon here, but will be purchasing the 9x12 portrait. Not my usual size and format but what the heck trying all new things. Thank you and the Grinch

I have 3 and don't have any of these problems. 2 for watercolor cotman, van gogh, holbein and 1 for holbein gouache.

Cheap Joe used these all the time when he came to classes in Boone. I love Kilimanjaro but I go through too much paper painting 30 portraits or more a week so the cost would be prohibitive. I use what was Cheap Joes fav before he made the Kilimanjaro books. Kilimanjaro is his brand and sold nowhere else. Neither is the loose Kilimanjaro. The book I use was Joe’s fav from before he made his own books Bee Papers super aquabee. Runs abt 20 for the size u like 9x12 only in portrait. 90# paper which eventually dries almost smooth. I suppose I could iron it but not going to bother. Oddly I do not like bee papers 140#paper nearly as much.

I am so excited to have seen your video title about a new BEST not so known watercolor sketchbook. I am embarking into the world of watercolors and watercolor and other specialtiy things like that for my mediums. I also want to incorporate mixed media throughout my life journals. I am a writer as well and was thinking that I would need to remove the pages tp place them into another holder in order to include the writing. What would your suggestions for that be? I am so creative that deciding upon just.one.thing is nearly impossible. I AM going to purchase a few of these notebook. I believe in the singular experience of creating your own notebooks as well. I am going to follow you. I have a number of other sketchbooks that I bought for a college class that are unused. I figure that they will need to be worked into the group. of journals for swatching or sketching.

It's good to give it a good wash before you fill it. That's what I do with mine and the paint sticks better.

My last Kiliminjaro sketchbook had its siral being fall apart. Cheap Joes replaced it, but all my hard work in the sketchbook was no longer bound. That's been years ago so I'll give them another try.

I can't agree with you more. the best sketchbookis always the one you make. every comercial sketchbook is either too expensive, has bad quality paper. doesn't ships where i live, or is clumsy to use. if i make my sketchbook i always have the paper i want. it always fits my budget, is the right size and it is prettier

I don’t know if itll help but when i had one years ago I found putting down little dots of paint held better than a full size pan amount of paint.

So glad i came across this video today! I live about 30 minutes from one of Cheap Joe's 2 brick and morter stores. The one im nearest to is actually attached to their warehouse from which they conduct all of their online business, and its their "outlet" store. Its my favorite place to go and stock up on watercolor supplies! Im like many who continue using Arches paper because almost everything else i try has something about it i dont like. The only one ive actually liked as much as Arches is Saunders. Well, on my last trip to Cheap Joes Outlet a few weeks ago, i purchased my first Killamamjaro paper ever, and it happens to be this exact sketchbook! I havnt used it yet but now im overwhelmed with excitement to open it and get going! Btw...your colorwheel painting is awesome! What a beautiful and inspirational cover!
