The random musical scenes are so stupid and cringe. Can justify one a season if there's an explanation but not like this
My biggest negative takeaway from the series is that it just flops in terms of the vibe of what Who should feel like. The show is very flexible yes, but anyone, newcomer or old fan can tell when stuff isn't clicking in a series and this one felt like it the most since perhaps the TV movie. I'd argue series 1 and even 2 of the 2005 series had some...weird vibes as well but the episodes that were done well proved the revival worked. This one just doesn't. Nothing feels fun in the way Who should, nothing feels intriguing in the way Who should, and also, its bewildering to me how no one is talking about how bad the camera work for this season is. Its very dull and lifeless. Also your take on Dot and Bubble is just.....insane. TO claim that the Doctor, someone who has been entirely disconnected from humanity's social climate and any sort of racism issue, has always been given power by the fact that he's white, and has less privilage because he's black? The fucking time lord alien who had decided the fate of the universe multiple times???
Main takeaway I got from this series was Moffatt has maintained the sauce and RTD has sadly lost the sauce
Unfortunately, this whole video feels a little bit like you didn't really watch any of the episodes.
I think you're watching a different video 😂 this is literally an episode by episode breakdown of the series
@@hurnnotice ...which doesn't contradict what I said.
in my opinon the actor was not good at acting it felt bland and boring.
RTD says he was inspired by Rey's parentage story arc in the last jedi and Agatha's reveal from Wanda Vision for this series. Says everything you need to know.
It was a fantastic series of Doctor Who, I loved Dot and Bubble and 73 Yards. I have been around long enough to see the shift, Hell Bent was hated when it aired and this series of DW is gonna age like fine vine. I'll bet 20 bucks in a few years time the mass opinion is gonna change for the Empire of Death. People call say "Lazy Writing" who have never written a word that's been put on screen. The series always puts character first, I cried when Ruby met her mom because we've seen her struggle, the sadness in her music and the feeling of abandonment she felt her whole life and her whole adult life in 73 Yard finally comes to a close. They shot that train sequence for 73 Yards in 5 minutes because the train couldn't stop so the crew got the train a whole village of people, shot the scene and got out by the next stop. That is dedication. 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, and for me even The Devil's Cord were back to back classic episodes. With beautiful production design, music, and cinematography. But most importantly the show has bigger 2 hearts than anything on TV.
RTD has sold the soul of the Doctor to deliver this Disneyfied drivel. Nonsensical plotting, deus ex machina galore, thin characterisations but - hey! Love conquers all!!! Absolutely abysmal. The whole show has disintegrated since the departure of Peter Capaldi. I read Disney is having second thoughts on the entire enterprise. Good.
With respect I love it when someone still young as yourself talk about being a long term fan. Fair enough though I get your meaning; starting from 2005. But for people now in their seventies and eighties it seems such a humorous comment. Everything is relative including age and life. Another amusing moment was when you said the Whitaker era should be for another video. This could also be taken as the Chibnall era = waste of time and don't bother. At 10:49 into this video I got a suspicion that I have seen this video before although I can't see any prior comment from someone who can't help himself but always comment. This series was so bizarre and in so many ways I almost think those like yourself who can effectively and articulately share their view are in ways doing a much better job than RTD did on several occasions. You are the better writer of the two. The lack of plausible resolution in nearly every story is woeful. Tying a bungie rope to a collar that just happens to be part of Sutekh a God, and then using this to drag him through a time vortex and then incidentally bringing everything back to life, must be one of RTD's biggest cop out endings ever. That is one big statement. For this viewer RTD let down fandom and lost the casual viewer altogether. His hubris and hyperbole got fans excitement levels up to grand heights to then just have them pulled away from them - yep, the old rug pulled out from under you analogy. I don't care for this fantasy vibe. It has let RTD get away with some very lazy writing. Yes, DW has done fantasy before with The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and The Mind Robber being two classics, but they were extremely well executed and resolved narratively. They were also one offs in a season. The unforgiveable was the Glee-like song and dance routine. This is DW not the movie FAME. It shows that the old trope that DW can be/do anything is not actually a full truth. It may be able to do anything but that doesn't make every inclusion in the show Doctor Who-ish. Cool review and great video. Cheers
I love your style! Can’t believe you have so few subscribers - one more now though 🎉

@@zillaquazar Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed 😊
At the cinema I saw Sutekh among the audience theorizing with us about who Ruby's mother is! :) I do believe that the first iteration of RTD's run focussed more on the family dynamics, we would actually see these characters and their relationships. In the second iteration of RTD, I'm afraid to say, is very sorely lacking, which in turn is less relatable. There is much to be said about 'show more than tell', as is the very nature of TV and viewerships.
RTD did cut out a scene from The Devil's Chord where the Doctor and Ruby run out onto the roof at the end, The Doctor explains to Ruby that music is coming back and the next 10 minutes are going to be a little weird due to the lingering effects of Maestro. Similar to the lingering effects of The Toymaker.
Glad I did not watch the new series as one of the things that annoyed me in the christmas special was the Doctor constantly crying for no reason... not that I mind the idea of the Doctor crying, but for 15 it does not feel earned AT ALL, in comparison with 10's moments where he cries for example
The future London in devils chord was a bit forced but I did LOVE the reference, because the other time the doctor did something like that was in....the pyramids of mars while fighting Sutehk
I thought he went to therapy
More entertaining than the Chibnall era but that was a low bar. And regarding RTD taking on board criticism? He'd rather blame the fan base that accept fault. A far cry from the attitude when he originally rebooted.
Something random that I had issue with was that Rogue's ship has a setting to check specifically for a "shapeshifter" and nothing else? Not species, not genus, planet of origin, number of hearts, lifespan, nothing! That was so weird to especially given how many shapeshifters exist in the universe that aren't chulder
@@alliswonderlain2595 yes so true!
I guess the real question is, who is Ruby's father? It feels like we were led down the wrong rabbit hole
That girl in _Boom_ has zero situational awareness.
I'm going with:- *73 YARDS: Loved the mystery and the death scene was pure chiller. I've got a built-in 'It's Dr Who, don't worry about it' filter which kicked in when I thought about it too much. *D & B: Too much to say but have to underline the incredible acting all round. *LEGEND OF RUBY...: Fantastic last 2 minute build-up. *EMPIRE OF DEATH: Yeah, I hear you but I'm a sucker for a good villain takedown and I loved this. *BOOM: Disappointing for Moffat. Still good tho'. *ROGUE: Further down than it deserves but I hate all that regency era crap and I didn't like the chickens. My backdrop tastes aside, the Doctor and R's attraction made the right statement and this should've been ep. 1. *SPACE BABIES: In the old 13 episode days, this would've been somewhere in the middle and forgotten about by Tuesday morning. Bad idea to open with. *DEVIL'S CHORD: Not so much bad but torpedoed by terrible moments. I had a 'Dr Who Filter' failure at the end.
Dammit, I forgot about CHURCH. Chuck it in behind ROGUE. Goblins... really??? Filters up.
I agree with a lot of your points. You seemed to go into it mostly unbiased and with logical reasons for what was wrong with each episode. That being said, I’m shocked you rated Rogue as 3rd… In my tier list I put it at the very bottom. The doctor ditches his companion to go flirt for like 40 min then randomly falls in love and kiss the dude when he doesn’t even know him?? Meanwhile is companion literally almost dies (and would have if she didn’t defend herself then cosplay to stay on the down low). It’s so out of character for the doctor in so many ways and it was the most painful episode to sit through imo. The doctor is shown to be mostly asexual through every incarnation. Even with his own wife he is at best an awkward and shy “lover”. He doesn’t actively seek out physical intimacy and never has. With anyone he’s been with, like rose and river, it feels much more mental and spiritual that physical (river is physical towards him, not the other way around). And like I said, he knew this guy for like 30 min… I don’t know how you logically didn’t call this out during your review? Did you not notice? Or maybe you put your dr who reviewing brain aside since like you implied in the video, you “just wanted to see them kiss already”? I wish you were a bit less biased when reviewing that episode because I honestly don’t see how someone that’s been a fan of the shows as long as people like you have could enjoy that episode and truly think that THAT is the doctor we grew up with.
@@lolztony no you're right! I can definitely see I did have more of a bias in the Rogue episode. I like Jonathan Groff as an actor and also felt like this character was kind of giving echos of captain jack which as a fan of the original reboot I was excited for. It might not work but I would be interested to see the doctor exploring a romantic relationship more if it didn't take away from the whole storyline and was more subtle to begin with, because yes it was all very quick in this one
@@sianirl ahh makes sense. It’s all good, I’m glad you were gracious enough to explain your thought process not only in the video but to expand in the comments as well :) liked and subscribed, thanks for the video
"There's a giant Fuck Off Smoke Monster" so very British 😂
As someone who is a hardcore ish Whovian I enjoyed this series, but to me it feels like Series 2 of Nu who again but with a lot and I mean ALOT less character depth. Banger episodes like 73 yards than some mid ass space babies which reminds me of "Fear her" The major difference is that series 2 has way more room with its episode count and that character depth I mentioned. Now 15 himself is almost great, I welcome him as a doctor but RTD needs to stop with this "normy doctor" Tennant began I wanted to like Jodie so much but as she went on, Chibs turned her into a lesser version of 10 and the same is already happening with 15 (different with often he lets it out) Personally I just want a doctor that can have fun again, which yes that's how it started but now RTD is doing that same trauma story again.
I think my biggest problem that I don't hear others talking about is the weird pacing of episodes, we have the Church on Ruby Road which feels like an episode meant for kids, space babies which feels like an episode for kids, and then Maestro which kinda felt really family friendly. I stopped in the middle of episode 3 cause it felt like it lacked the more mature and interesting stories I wanted. I ended up coming back after I learned who the series villain was, and I enjoyed the rest of the series. I just think that maybe Maestro should have been moved back to be episode 5 or 6.
please do 13th doctor, also it would probably get some traction cos people love hating on it so much
@@thomassmith839 I would definitely try to go in with an open mind haha but there is a lot to talk about

Unnecessary Carla hate 😐
the promise to bring her back safe was such a rip off of Rose's mom. but those actors where so much better at bringing the feels. I just felt so un-invested with this whole season.
@@jessicah1921 but why does the doctor say it at all!? He loses so many companions! 😂
@@sianirl OHHHH thats a good point!
As someone who grew up watching from tennant to capaldi, this just doesn’t feel like doctor who anymore. Something about the way it’s shot and directed with the vibrant colour grading and something about the acting and dialogue just isn’t the same. It just feels so odd and it feels like it’s a completely different show. Plus the whole magical aspects are done so bad and just feel off and not like doctor who. When I first saw the Christmas special and saw the goblin musical scene I knew I was going to hate this season because it’s just no longer doctor who and no longer the show that I grew up with. I get that they’re trying to encourage a new audience but I feel like they’re just alienating their current audience and that definitely is shown within the viewing figures.
I hated the musical numbers, to be honest. I could just about put up with the one in the Christmas special as they sold the track for charity and the Doctor and Ruby only sing because the goblins do in order to distract them but the one in the Devil's Chord has no plot justification. The Space Babies were cringy. Jinx Monsoon was too over the top for me, and like I say, the song and dance routine is not for me. I liked Boom, though, if I had to pick fault, I agree the kid is annoying. Also if the Doctor is so careless that he just steps on a land mine, it's a wonder he has lived so long. Tom Baker stepped on a mine once, but it was a small part of one episode. Then, the next episode, he steps on something dangerous again. Look where you're going, man! The episode has some good moments, but it amounts to nothing as the events never actually happen, and Ruby doesn't remember her experiences. Then we have the spoilt rich kids who you almost want to be eaten as they are so annoying. Lindy is so awful. It's hard to be on her side, and then she actually sells out Ricky! Then they're all racist and won't let the Doctor save them. Then Rogue. I don't mind the gay flirting or even the kiss, but the Doctor seems way more into Rogue than he should, given they’ve known each other for only about 20 mins. He leaves Ruby alone, and she nearly gets killed. Plus, the bird aliens' whole motivation is crap they basically just want to cosplay Bridgerton?! I'm glad you brought up Ncuti crying all the time. I wasn't sure if my reaction was mainly because I'm male, so I'm glad to know that a woman feels the same. This episode brings up another thing the Doctor hasn't really saved anyone this season. Ruby saves herself from the alien, and then Rogue saves her. Then The Legend of Ruby Sunday. I actually liked it. To a point anyway. Anticipation of some answers was high. The fact that it seems U.N.I.T is now full of mums and kids instead of being mainly trained professional soldiers is a bit of a gripe. I doubt Kate's dad would approve. Then Sutekh is back! A proper cliffhanger for once. So the stakes are high, but then he gets defeated by a rope around his neck! As for Ruby's mum, she's just an ordinary person. So much for that! So, all in all, I'm giving this series 4 out of 10.
Wow what a brilliant overview. It's great to see someone go into detail rather than just leave a rather vague sentence or two. In this day of no-one wanting to bother to write at length, I appreciate it. Details and deeper analysis are important and more worthy of the reader’s attention. I can't fault any of your comments or views and for anyone wanting to read an articulate overview well you have provided them with one. This video combined with your commentary probably makes for the best 2024 season review I have encountered on TH-cam.
You should get some sound proofing padding for your room to make the echo a bit less and clean up the sound quality
after hearing Russell T Davis was coming back, I was so excited and I expected this new season to be on par with his previous era, but I feel like I've been duped as it feels way closer to chibnalls era, the era which turned me off the show. the writing is SO sloppy, so much so that I'd bet real money that half of these were first draft scripts. the scripts quality along side the fewer episode count really killed this season for me, I'd honestly rank it 5/10 as its not bad per say, just incredibly disappointing. I'm not expected much from season 2 either since they've already been filmed so criticism would not have been taken into account which is a real shame.
I might have to disagree with your opinion about being confronted about his race, gender or sexuality, but you haven't seen the 60th specials yet where he most definitely is. Having said that, Doctor who has had no problem having digs at men for the last 5 or 6 series. Historically he may not have those issues, but in modern day, he will and it's grim to see as it's not from a storytelling perspective, it seems to shamefully be from a writer's perspective. 😬 Enjoyed your review though. He did cry way too much 😂 After seeing the cringe Harriet Arbinger plot, I was wondering when Alan Pocalypse would make an appearance 😂 I think Russell has either lost his touch or perhaps we are all a bit prepared for his style of writing this time. Dialogue was so poo and the ending was sooooo bad. Just remember when you have kids to pop on a cloak and go point at a Give Way sign 😂 Nice upbeat video ❤
@@satansprguy2864 omg my god Alan Pocalypse got me 🤣
@sianirl haha loved your video. Looking forward to plenty more 😀😀
Don't feel bad you didn't notice the lack of diversity in Dot & Bubble. Firstly, it's an alien world of pastel colours. Who know what is going on until it's explained. Equally 94% of the UK population is white. So unless you lived in London, mostly seeing white people is the usual.
I really enjoyed this season, but i appreciated hearing your opinions on each episode.
@@MrShowoff27 no that's so good if you enjoyed it! and I'm sure there will be a whole new audience as well, without the nostalgia bias from previous seasons, but it's definitely hard not to compare!
@@sianirlEmpire of death was the only episode that disappointed me. I was expecting like the pandorica opens/ Big bang kind of two-parter, and it was a letdown.
I managed to get to your review of episode 6, whilst finding myself saying; stupid, silly, ridiculous or gross! Even the ham-fisted racism event you thought was well done. Realised I was too bored to care about the last two; thats when you know Who" is dead.
I still think that if somehow there were people who did not trust someone because they were black, there would most definitely be people who would not trust someone that was white. So the other Doctors still could be alienated by those people
Space babies was super cringe and me loose hope for doctor who being good again! I hated all the toilet humor in space babies its soo bad but anyway that episode threw me off but then some of the other episodes were bad as well!! the only episodes I liked out of the new season were rogue and Boom and all the others were just so bad, I do love Ncuti tho
The maestro playing piano transitioning into the Intro was awful? I liked ot quite much. Only the out of place dance/musical number at the end was a bit much for me.
Imagine if it was even implied that the doctor went around jumping from planet to planet looking for Rogue before Sutekh made an appearance. Then they wouldn't have to say that Sutekh had been there since Tom Baker. The fact that the doctor had been jumping around space and time so much for his search would make the death trail magnitudal enough and they could've said that Sutekh boarded the tardis during wild blue yonder or smth which would explain why Susan has only been noticed throughout this season. I think if the demise of everything was directly tied to the doctor's determination to save someone he allowed himself to have a connection with, it would have a massive impact on him and the audience witnessing his anger. This would also explain why Sutekh decided to show himself now as opposed to it being completely random after 40 or so years of television
Or, maybe keep the "when" he jumped on more ambigious. Also TBF, it was said he was gaining strength, he was still fairly weak when he first jumped on
Clever. Too bad they're...who they are. 😂
@34:30 discount Borg.
Is it because he is black or he is not a rich nepo baby? Classism, racism both?
They said that Ncuti's Doctor was a new "era" So, there was the new era started with Christopher Eccleston and this is the new new era. They are not going by regenerations any more???? Go figure.
Hasn't it usually been RTD era, Moffat era and chibnall era? So new era when they change producer
You could trivially justify a musical episode of Doctor who. The tardis has telepathic translation. They land in a city that has its own universal translator covering it. Feedback loop ensues, and they have to untangle the mess before it fries everybody's brain. There's an episode. No magic, gods, or fairy circles required.
The 12th doctor is good x
i completely disagree
