Great tutorial! Thanks 😊
What kind of regulator do you use? thanks
What is the machine you’re using at 12:30 over the top of the glass?
Simply gorgeous, and those colours!!
Thank you for this tutorial. Is it necessary to 'clean' the lead came before soldering? Really having trouble, using 60/40 solder and liquid Flux. No flow at all. (an amateur that has been out of practice for a number of years.) Thinking it could be my soldering iron - the tip specifically. And sponges, will any type of sponge do? TIA
That was awesome! Loved it❤❤❤
Thank you Sophie.
Hint: a faint dusting of whiting on an old worn paint brush is a great way to clean up the glass and ‘seal’ the putty. Alternatively spray 50/50 meth and water….my go-to post puttying cleaner. Meths alone smears.
@@patrickleniston-l8k great tips thank you. I'll definitely give them a go
Nice job. Two things though: I didn’t see you bending the opened out lead came back over the glass prior to puttying. I place my leadknife between the glass and lead then, using my lathekin and pushing against the knife so as not to break the glass, I ease the flange back into its original form. If done carefully you’d never know it had been touched. Also, without being neurotic about the dangers of lead, during on site repairs like this lead oxides are disturbed and released into the air right in front of your mouth. So it’s 100% advisable to mask up. (30 years full time experience BTW)
@@patrickleniston-l8k thanks for the advice. It's generally my practice to bend the lead back over. I like your suggestion about protecting the glass. And you are right about the lead being toxic.
Thank you
@@joebonomono you are most welcome
Hi I’m a beginner thanks for your tutorials, camouflaged tell me how thick the glass is and what size the lead came is please.
Roughly 2-4mm thick. The lead comes in many sizes. I recommend you try and get hold of my book. You'll have the answers to just about everything at your fingertips. th-cam.com/video/DatR8H2_wSc/w-d-xo.html
Very satisfying watching you make such flawless repairs. I have a big window I need to repair and am going to try and replace a few pieces from the middle as taking the whole thing out of the frame would be very time consuming. When working with lead came are there any hazards with touching it? Thanks.
Some people work with gloves. I just make sure to wash my hands well.
Good to know, Ty
No problem!
Found this most informative. Thank you. ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Good video ❤
Thanks for the visit
Manual says never rotate the piece but follow the line. Ie: improper use of saw, they didn't read the manual or watch the training video!!!!
The man who sent this to me has a lifetime of experience on this type of tool so I guess it's what works for him.
I’ve been searching for this tool for hours and Google had no idea. I’m so glad that I came across with your channel and really appreciated for this video🙏thanks so much
Glad I could help!
That's awesome! Thanks for the lesson.
No problem!
Great video Sophie. Can this be done in situ? The copper wires have become detached from the solder due to the window cleaner pressing too hard. Thanks
Vertical soldering is hard but not impossible.
I have a big stained glass window I need to repair. Great tips. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice job
Thank you!
Have you tried using a little heat .
Actually no, but it's worth a try
thanks Sophie! Subscribed and Liked
Much appreciated!
Very helpful! Thanks for the detailed instructions.
You're welcome!
Your videos are great!! I just got you book in the mail. I can’t wait to read it!! Thank you for making it about lead. Most of the books are about foil.
@@kristyschaefers7214 thank you for your kind message. Enjoy your book 😊
Hi Sophie. I am hoping to add silver stain to a portion of yello glass to give an appearance of orange. I also keen to use tracing paint too on the same piece . Is this possible and which order should this be done? Many thanks S
If you are using traditional paint, you fire the highest temperature first. So, tracing paint first then do the silver stain (on the back).
@SophiesStainedGlass thank you Sophie
I tried my first stained glass project today, sadly I didnt pay enough attention before and I ordered only 4mm lead. It's so narrow! I gave up after one hour of struggling. Will give it one more go tomorrow, but I think I'll have to order the 12mm for the outside from and 8mm for the rest just like you're doing here. Thank you for uploading this tutorial!
@@adamolesiak6528 Even I struggle with 4mm lead! I'm sure you'll smash it with 8mm! :-)
Thanks for your great videos. Such helpful tips. Are you using zinc came for the sides of the panel? Will lead came also work?
I only ever use lead.
Very interesting! I am curious about how these are connected to the actual frame. Could you elaborate?
Holes are drilled into the frame for the bars, either side of the panel.
Would the stove polish work on Zinc lead border?
@@kristyschaefers7214 not sure....
Apologies, ignore my previous message, was too hasty asking about the cello tape. Watched to the end😅
👍
This was helpful, thanks. I'm a novice. Are you rubbing flux onto the joins? TIA
Yes I am!
Reply please
Sorry...reply to what?
Sir my requirement lead in india please send me lead name and lead address in india available
I'm sorry but I don't know where you can buy lead in India.
How do you reuse little solder balls that have dropped onto glass or board instead of throwing them away?
@@mariontyler-z1b you should be able to pick them up on the tip of your soldering iron.
This was such a tense watch. Well done it looked fabulous.
Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, so much!
You are welcome.
Hello - thanks for the videos. Can I please ask you what kind of polisher you use? And are you always polishing your stained glass pieces? Thanks for your answers.
I always polish my panels. Here's a video about my polisher th-cam.com/video/4zHz8SLqbac/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6RR0Q4wro38WlV4h
you said the lead is hard and not pliable. Could you heat the lead up? not with a blow tourch but say, with a hair dryer?
It probable wouldn't help with old brittle lead. It does soften putty a bit.
ME ENCANTA
:-)
Thank you
Welcome!
It is beautiful, Sophie. I admire you so much.
Thank you so much :-)
Thanks for the very helpful video! Is there a minimum rebate that is required to squeeze in a panel? I'd like to replace my clear float glass with a panel, but with the current glass being 2mm, the rebate is fairly shallow.
If you have 7mm minimum then you could use face beading instead of rebated beading
i love it
:-)
Weirdly encouraging to see someone so expert struggle with the cutting--though with much better results than my struggles, of course.😅
Glad you enjoyed my pain!! ;-)
@@SophiesStainedGlass Well, when you put it that way...
Fabulous 👏👏👏
Thanks 🤗
Sophie, I’m a beginner and you are an awesome teacher! I am learning so much from you. Where do you get your simple patterns? Thank you!
I draw my own designs.
Also, what do you do when you score a line, seemingly correctly, & it just will not break. I've tried all the things you've mentioned (& that I've seen elsewhere--the tapping & waggling & the different pressure of different pliers or thumbs), & you, like everyone, say you can't re-score (because it...hurt the cutting head? I'm not clear on that). Same glass, which may be part of the problem, but it's really the best glass for the application.
In this video I struggle to cut thick glass th-cam.com/video/lHcjT0prehs/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/users/shorts_kCWVDhpAuw?si=zmGpSCwFVd0JkF_F
@@SophiesStainedGlass As I commented on the video, it's encouraging to see someone so expert struggle with bumpy glass as I do--though with much better results (my solution so far: get extra glass). Thanks, & I love your work!
I have been working on my cutting skills but, with 2 pieces of glass that I've been trying to cut--granted, into incredibly difficult long, narrow curved pieces--I literally could not have these pieces if I didn't have a grinder. In fact, I tried nibbling them to neatness with the grozier pliers & kept breaking them, no matter how careful, slow, & delicate I tried to be. Maybe I shouldn't have tried such pieces with these 2 kinds of glass, but I was trying to get the mottled look of light through leaves as seen through sheer fabric, & only one kind of glass seemed to convey that--but it was quite heavily textured, which seemed to be the problem. The other problematic glass had the look of fabric & was perfect, but it too had a texture that caught my cutting edge again & again. And when I tried to use the groziers to neaten it, there seemed to be hard little nuggets in the glass that resisted any pressure that wouldn't damage the piece. Aside from just doing something else, do you have any advice for cutting extremely delicate pieces for extremely difficult glass--especially as you argue against a grinder, which, as I've said, saved me, though it was a slog. (I love your videos. You are perfect.)
th-cam.com/video/7mqLRCvsMbI/w-d-xo.html this video might help but sometimes the glass just won't go your way - and actually grinding can be the only option sometimes. I did a really tricky window last year with horribly textured glass and I couldn't have done it with grinding.
@@SophiesStainedGlass I did watch this & it is helpful. Thanks!
I love your work, Sophie. The glass you fused is beautiful
Thanks Bruce! X
