I'm an avid hiker, backpacker, and novice to intermediate mountaineer. I've climbed 10 of 15 of California's peaks that are over 14,000 feet in elevation including Mt Whitney (5 times including the mountaineers route) and Mt Shasta (2 times). Outside of California I've climbed Mt Rainier in Washington, and Pico de Orizaba in Mexico at 18,491 feet elevation.
Idlehour Thru Hike
This was a 3-day 2-night backpacking trip to the Idlehour trail camp in the Angeles National Forest. I started at Eaton Saddle and hiked down to Idlehour trail camp where I met the rest of the group. The following day we checked out a waterfall and then I did a day hike to Hoegees trail camp along the Winter Creek Trail to see what it looked like after being closed for 4 years because of the Bobcat fire. The next day we hiked out via Henninger Flats to the Pinecrest Gate. The date of this trip was from November 15th to 17th, 2024.

After being closed for 4 years after the Bobcat fire, the Sturtevant trail and Winter Creek trails from Chantry Flat have finally opened up to the public. First I went to the Sturtevant Falls, then to Spruce Grove Trail Camp, then to Sturtevant Camp, and finally to Hoegees Trail Camp. I was pleased to see that they were all in good condition after the fire. The totals for this hike were about 1...

This was a 3-day 2-night backpacking trip to the summit of Mt Whitney at 14,505 feet elevation, the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states of the USA. It is a fairly easy trail to follow but the main challenge is the elevation. Sure enough one person in our group of four got altitude sickness. The date of this trip was from September 7th to 9th, 2024.

This was a 5-day 4-night backpacking trip along the beautiful Rae Lakes Loop in Kings Canyon National Park starting at Roads End. We saw lots of wildlife including bears, deer, marmots, chipmunks, and snakes. We caught our quota of trout and had them for dinner and they were delicious, catch and cook! Rae Lakes is very popular because the PCT, JMT, and the Rae Lakes loop all pass through. The t...

Thanks for this video, at least I can see what happened. You’re a beast, David! That’s a lot of miles for 3 days. I can’t even walk a mile nowadays. Hope to see you all soon!
We missed you there Robert! Also, the other group that was in camp were subscribers to your channel and were asking about you as well. Hope to see you soon!
Great video
Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff, David. I have yet to visit this historic place, being stuck at work and home sucks. Anyway, there still a missing 78 year old guy from Oct 11 I think. S&R even dived the bottom of the falls and found nothing.
Thanks Robert! Can't wait until you get some time off to play. And I hope they find that missing hiker soon.
Hey Feiler🎉 I hiked 13.2 miles yesterday . 2933 ele. Just wanted to share!
That's great. Keep it going
Great video. I snow shoe up there every winter, backpack every summer, and been thinking about a winter ascent & overnighter. I think I would use a 4 season tent and white gas with those temps you guys encountered, which weren’t bad, and definitely carry my MSR Lightning Ascent snow shoes. You guys took the tough Marion Trail climb, which is a really impressive gain at any time of year. Fun trip!
Thanks. Yeah, San Jacinto is really nice all year round. Unless snow is actually going to fall while you are camping, you don't really need a 4 season tent even in winter. Just make sure your sleeping bag and pad are rated for low temperatures. Cheers!
Hey David will you be doing the bridge to no where hike again? I would like to come!
That part of the forest is currently closed until the end of 2025 because of the Bridge fire 😔
Hey David have you done the JMT? I just started hiking & ❤ it
Hi Luann, I have done the JMT, but not all 220 miles of it in one shot. It is really pretty. Glad to hear that you like hiking. Maybe later I can show you some nice spots.
@@davidfeiler1279 yes please!! There’s a place called Chantry Flats that just opened up after four years it looks really pretty.
@@luannproctor672 I've been there many times before the fire. Let's wait until it cools off a bit more.
@@davidfeiler1279 good👍🏼 super excited, thank you.
Where's Pharroah?
He couldn't make it for that many days, so he went to the Dutch Louie mine instead.
You guys should try trout tacos mmmm
Sounds like a good idea. I'll bring some tortillas next time
I went over bishop pass on horseback I friend of mine was a packer we cowboy camped such an awesome trip
Sounds like a great time. Also makes it a lot easier when you don't have to carry your pack.
Now its burnt down :(
So sad 😔
Awesome video once again! How long was the hike from Blue Lake to Dingleberry Lake?
Thanks! It was about 1.6 miles and 500 feet of climbing from Blue Lake to Dingleberry Lake. Not far at all.
That place was incredible! I think it beat my Franklin Lake trip. We got everything, plus fish in our belly. Definitely we should go back there! Tagay!
Yeah, that was a great trip. We need to check out all the other lakes up there as well, especially Midnight Lake! Tagay!
Wow, so beautiful.
It certainly was beautiful!
there said to be two graves back there and an old mine shaft
Sounds like we need to go back there and find them!
Looks like a great place for winter camping.
That's exactly what Liming and I were thinking!
Do you think I can leave my jet skies in the beach??
Sorry, but I don't know if you can.
I love the thumbnail. Reminds me of Gate's of The Artic in Alaska.
It's a different looking world up there. I've never been to Alaska, but it's on my list. Will check it out. Thanks.
@@davidfeiler1279 I have a friend who is from Alaska, he was born in the artic circle in fact. What's crazy about him is that he is really resistant to the cold, It'll be 37 degrees and all he has is Jean's and a hoodie.
I really loved staying t Outpost! You put your tent at exact location that I did earlier! Congrats on summit!
Thanks. That was my first time staying at Outpost camp and I really liked it.
Enjoyed the video in its entirety! Really encouraged me to train like I used to and finally make my summit happen.
Thanks. In addition to training, you want to make sure you acclimate properly. We spent the first night at Whitney Portal campground (8,400 feet) and the second night at Trail camp (12,000 feet). You can do it!
Another good video. Can't imagine how rough that hike down must have been for Jason. Those pancakes are a great post-hike reward!
Thanks. Altitude sickness makes your experience pretty lousy and that's why Jason said he is one and done for the summit. I was so hungry when I finished I thought for sure I could finish the whole thing, but it turned out I could only finish half 😃
@@davidfeiler1279 Ya. During my first summit attempt I started feeling sick at Trail Camp while setting up camp. Ate some food and hydrated, but decided to pack up and head back down rather than risk getting worse overnight. Possible I could have gotten better after getting some rest. Will be interesting to see if Jason changes his mind after he's back and fully recovered. Funny how we forget the tough parts of the trips when we are back home sitting comfortably on our couches.
@@HuskyMike I think that was a smart move to head back down. The mountain isn't going anywhere. Also, you are so right about how quickly we forget about the tough parts of the trip.😉
I think it was great how you stuck with Jason. Great job! I love it up there!
Thanks. Yeah I wanted to make sure he got down okay. I was thinking of hitting the SOS button on the Garmin Inreach at one point, but we managed to make it out in the end.
You’re a good friend.
What a great trip, can’t believe we did it. Jason showed some spirit, it could’ve been a different story but he pushed through. Until the next one, tagay!
Yeah that was a fun trip. It looks like our training paid off in the end again. Next time I'm sure Jason will join our training 😉 Tagay!
The views are amazing but the wind on the mic is annoying.
I personally love wind on mic it's like ASMR
Why 🐻s
If you watch the end of the video you'll see where I saw the bears.
I've wondered what the non-JMT part of the loop looks like. Great video and overall view of the loop. I hope to do it in 2025 starting from Onion Valley. Probably clockwise. I appreciate the effort you took in time and energy to film the trip. It was enjoyable following along and very informative.
Thanks and glad it was helpful. Starting from Onion Valley is a good idea as it is easier to get a permit on that side.
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for filming the Rim trail at Mt. Wilson. In the late 90's I used to frequent this trail, starting from the Golf Course to Mt. Wilson Toll Road to Rim Trail to Gabrielino Trail stop at Chantry Flats store to get a quick snack and back to the golf course area. Back then, I don't ever recall seeing so much over grown vegetation. Thanks for filming the memorial of USFS volunteer at newcombs pass. I got such a big thrill whenever I visited Sturtevant camp. My bucket list is to stay the night in a cabin at sturtevant camp. Thanks!!!
You are welcome. That sounds like a very challenging loop you use to do from the golf course. Chantry Flats and Sturtevant have been closed for a few years now, but I heard they may open up October 1st this year. Keeping my fingers crossed.
That cinnamon colored black bear has been there for years. See him every few years. He sat on the trail one time and wouldn’t move
Cool! Yeah, there are lots of bears in that area. We saw at least 4 of them on this trip.
Awesome trip and video. Have camped out in the winter at Little Round Valley 3 times over the years. Used to hike to the Tram for dinner and drinks before hiking back to my campsite. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! That's a great idea to go to the restaurant by the tram.
awesome video.
Thanks!
Where is the fish spot? I only went 3/4 to bridge of nowhere and went back
The fish spot we were at was about a mile or two upstream from the bridge.
@@davidfeiler1279 nice, ill check it out when i make it that far, it took a while even to get 3/4 to bridge of nowhere. Did the fish taste any good?
@@marlon8597 Yeah, it's not an easy hike, but the fish did taste good. Good luck.
do you have a gpx file for this hike?
No, but we started at Vincent Gap and followed the river all the way to Heaton Flats. In some sections there is no trail so you just have to bush whack your way along the river.
BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks Robert. It was like I was in a fantasy land it was so nice!
That is NOT a chipmunk! A Golden Mantle Squirrel !!!
You are correct. I did some research and found this: "The easiest way to tell them apart is to look at the face. Chipmunks have stripes on both their faces and their bodies. Golden- mantled ground squirrels have stripes only on the body." Thanks for the correction!
So cool man. Great video
Thanks Josh. We had a great time making it.
Thanks for sharing your trip. It brought back great memories (except for the mosquitoes) of my backpacking days, many moons ago :)
You're welcome Matt. I agree about the mosquitoes. They are the only thing that I don't like about the sierras.
Such a great hike and beautiful location to camp! Thanks for the video!!
You bet!
Breath taking views, sky is so blue. Majestic, Epic CA Sierras my home state. Wonderland! ❤️🏕️🏞️🎢
It certainly is a wonderland!
Great video! Did you run across any poison oak? At 14: minutes; what was your bait or lure of choice? ❤
Thanks! Yes, there is a lot of poison oak that we came across, but you can mostly avoid it if you know what it looks like. We used panther martin spinning lures which the trout seem to go after.
I go at least 5 times a year
Hello, a question at minute 11 and 15 seconds. That is where the river is being born.
It kind of looks like that is where the river is being born, but it is actually much further up the mountain.
Hi David...back in the 70s thru the 90s we used to catch really beautiful Native Rainbow trout...the Native are not big but have profound colors and definition. A 5 inch male would already have a very profound lower hooked jaw ... Amazing fish...if you come across any please release them.... they'd appreciate it. I grew up in Downey and spent countless hours in the Canyons... Try Fish Canyon sometime in the winter qhen it's not crowded... Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High School Downey California
Hi Eric, I'm happy to say that the rainbow trout are still swimming in those waters and they are doing well. I prefer to use single barbless hooks for catch and release. Cheers!
Wow such a beautiful place 🫶
It really is!
This place is semi local to me and I have never been there, looks like a nice place to visit. Do you need a 4 wheel drive to get there or any car will do?
Any car will do except in winter because of the snow.
The apple tree is looking good
Yes, and the apples are ready for picking too!
🥰
Awesome video. Was this your first time doing it? Looks like you can get turned around and lost pretty quick!
Thanks, and yes it was my first time. Without GPS it would be very easy to get lost.
@@davidfeiler1279 what kind of GPS do you carry on these hikes?
@@rodgea3103 I just use an app on my phone called Alltrails. Just make sure to download the map before you go offline.
Would you say this hike is dangerous doing on your own? Due to wildlife such as mountain lions, bears etc?
There is always risk, but I believe it is low. In my many years of hiking I have only had a few bear encounters and one mountain lion encounter and all of them ran away pretty quickly.
Great to see a lesser used trail so close to home! Nice job.
Thanks! I've passed by the trailhead of the Rim trail so many times that I finally decided to check it out.
Fake news!
You're the first person to say anything about what I assume to be the bears. However, the bears do appear in my video at the end.
