      @@RichsRidesandRestorations No, but I rode a tradesman's delivery bike every Saturday for several years in the 1950s delivering meat for a butcher's shop. Heavy bike, heavy basket of meat and me added up to quite a load! The brakes were of the rod type and totally inadequate, especially in the wet and I survived a few hairy moments. I was allowed to use it for private purposes and it took me on fishing trips and I used it to visit my girlfriend who I later married.

    My late wife rode one of these to and from our school during the 1950s. I liked it then for the graceful curve of its frame; no one got that quite as right as Raleigh. Wish I'd got it now although I am too old to ride a bike.

    Hi, enjoyed the video. I have a 3speed AG and wanted to change the rear cog to a 22 tooth as first gear is not that great, unfortunately the cog is of the screw on type and wondered if I have to change the driver or can you get 22 tooth screw on cogs and if so how do you remove the cog from the driver. Any advice would be appreciated thanks

    I have a '84 Peugeot branded version pf this bike. I am in the United States and interestingly enough, mine has the folding hinge in the completely opposite direction, so that the frame folds towards the drive side. This seems to make more sense, so the chain isn't as exposed when folded. What are your thoughts on this as to any advantages or disadvantages, or even a reason why they would differ? Other than the stickers on the frame, the bikes look to be identical.

    • @RichsRidesandRestorations
      @RichsRidesandRestorations หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the question! I’ve had 3 folding bikes, 2 of which hinge away from the drive side and only 1, the Mk 2 Bickerton, folds towards the drive side in order to cover the chain. It would be interesting to do some research into whether the hinge direction was based on manufacturer or the target export market.

      The original Bickerton bikes of the 1970s and 80s, designed by Harry Bickerton, are said to be the inspiration for the iconic Brompton bikes. Harry’s son, Mark, relaunched the brand in 2011 and the new bikes are actually manufactured by Tern - the Bickerton Junction is very similar to the Tern Link.

I tinker with stuff for the same reasons, and previously I've done up an old sewing machine, stripped out and cleaned each dirty component, oiled it and she runs beautifully now and I've made clothes, bags and tool rolls etc since. I don't suppose you know what brand of kick stand you purchased Rich? I ordered one (prophete aluminium 26") and the pedal crank hits it badly. I'm not sure if I should get a vintage one from eBay or try another from Amazon. The local bike shop didn't have one, or I'd have bought locally. Cheers.

    • @RichsRidesandRestorations
      @RichsRidesandRestorations 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I also had issues finding kickstands that don't interfere with the pedal cracks! On my Hercules Commuter I currently use a Decathlon Chainstay Kickstand that fastens to the frame near the rear non-driveside axle, though I'm planning on swapping that onto my Raleigh Pioneer Trail to give better support when the panniers are loaded up. Other brands of chainstay kickstands may be available. If you want to preserve the vintage look, then getting an old Raleigh kickstand secondhand may be the best way to go.

    That was helpful, thanks Rich. Is it possible to do this without a vice? I've got a black and decker workmate, but that's all. I'm thinking I'll have to pay the bike shop to sort my SA hub. It works and changes gear fine, but the pedals turn when the wheels are turning, like yours did.

    My bottom bracket sounds like a whale singing! I assume that's because it's gummed up and needs servicing too. The rest of the bike has cleaned up ok, rust-wise, though the wheels and brake pulls don't look great cosmetically. My chain/chain ring is dragging against the chain case. I think it needs gentle rebending in a vice. I was amazed that the tyres pumped up and are holding air, and the brakes are good without me doing anything, and have the original leather faced Raleigh blocks in. How do you know if the tyres need replacing? Is it best to put new ones in due to the 40 year age of the existing ones? The front looks sound, but the rear has a couple of cracks. I'm hoping to give the bike to a friend, so I don't want to give her something that's about to break. I think I need to visit the local bike shop to price up tubes and tyres, and see if they have any spare back racks or kick stands that I can buy. eBay has them, if not.

    • @RichsRidesandRestorations
      @RichsRidesandRestorations 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks @@RichsRidesandRestorations. New tyres and tubes it is. Off to the bike shop at lunch tomorrow to buy them. I've managed to fix the chain case rubbing by putting a washer behind the bolt so no bending required thankfully. Thanks for your prompt response, you are a helpful chap!

      @sarahs784 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I've done all I can doing up my bike; it has new tyres and tubes, it's been cleaned and the rust removed and I've put a rack on the back that the man in the bike threw in for free with the tyres etc. The pedals were going round by themselves, I checked the hub, and the shaped washer was facing the wrong way, as was the sprocket! The lock ring was a pain to put back on, but it's sorted now. I've booked in for a free "Dr Bike" session to get it checked over to make sure I've not missed anything, then I'll give it to a friend. Mine cost me £10 but I probably spent around £50 reviving it, including brand new tyres and other bits and pieces. Awesome video ! I’ve just picked up one of these myself all be it the ‘18 dual sis’ version, it’s got the same tubing as your model though! Just out of interest would you know the stem size? Am looking to replace mine as it’s knackered and rusty beyond repair and I can’t read the markings… is yours a 21.1mm or a 22.2?

      Hi thanks for your question, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The handlebar stem is 10cm long and it’s a 1inch steerer tube. I hope that helps!

    I have the same bike, same year. Used two or three times a week. I camp with it and have done several multi day trips. In 2018 I added a front hub motor(which meant changing the wheel and rack for the battery) and have done thousands of mile since. New gears a couple of years ago and new mudguards last year. I put Schwalbe tyres on and removed the useless stand and also the chain guard as it was a nuisance for roadside repairs and looked silly. What a bike! Weights a tone, though.

    It's quite interesting that a lot of countries in the 70's and 80's were making similar bicycles. Here in Poland, we got a model called "Flaming" made by Romet.

    I saw a page on the internet from a series of books called 'kid mechanic', which shows a 3-speed hub with an attached 3 speed cassette and tensioner... I was wondering if there are any sorces that might show me how to do it myself 😅 Basically, i wanted the option for a lower and a higher gear than the one currently on my bike, and I thought that I still wanted to keep my hub, and this solution That I had found was perfect for that, the big problem was the text was truly pixilated, illlegible i tell you. Would you happen to know of the way they did this, for the same type of hub as in your video (AW), and if not, where i can find out... I know i could just go the quick cheaper option of going fully modern cassette and chain but my bike is old hy hub is old and i honestly prefer the old solution because i feel it keeps the bikes 'soul'. (If needed, my bike is a Hercules, the same one as the green one in your thumbnail.)

      Thanks for your question! What you're describing sounds very similar to what is fitted to some Brompton bikes, where a driver that can hold a 3 or 4 speed cassette replaces the standard driver that usually holds a single sprocket. A quick google for "fit freehub to sturmey archer" brought up this: www.brommieplus.com/portal_c1_cnt_page.php?owner_num=c1_343119&button_num=c1&folder_id=89156&cnt_id=945739

      @RichsRidesandRestorations saddly the site is for newer sturmey models, but using your search prompts as inspiration I have found a potential solution... it will take some work, and I honestly don't know if I can. The solution I have found is from the "cycling UK forum" (I would post the link to the sight, but youtube is a bit funny) and describes replacing the internals of an AW hub with newer internals of a SRF3/BSR NIG 3 speed hub, this allows the NIG 3-pronged driver to be replaced with a 9-spline driver, by using the Shimano style 9 spline driver you can attach sprockets 1 to 2 easily, 3 with a circlip or with some metal work 4. Depending on the desired set-up, these with spacers come from 8, 9, 10, or 11 speed Shimano HG cassettes. Adding 2 sprockets is very simple, but for 3 sprockets or above, a homemade narrower gauge wire retaining circlip (1.4 - 1.6mm) is required and obviously a 3/32” chainring and chain. I will be honest and say that I didn't understand most of the words in the post, but from what I'm getting, this either turns my 3-speed to a 9-speed with the ability to screw the cassettes on or simply keeps my hub a 3-speed and also adds the threads to screw the cassettes on. I would like to first ask you if this is a valid solution and if I should consider going down this route? Sorry for the wall of text. im just happy you responded and hoped maby you would humour my questions one more time... I'm sorry if this has been a bother, I have been told that a 9-speed hybrid while using an AW is by no means a common solution anymore...

    Did you by any chance unscrew the posts which hold the break rods on the handle bar? I did and discovered there were 2 D-nuts rattling round inside the handlebar. Ive got them out but do I have any chance of getting them back in place when I have cleaned up the handle bar? If so how?

    • @RichsRidesandRestorations
      @RichsRidesandRestorations 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for your question! I didn't remove the posts from the handlebars. As far as I know there's no way to put those posts back on as they're fitted in the factory when the handlebars are being assembled, possibly with some kind of jig to hold the nuts in place. Sadly, you may have to get a new set of handlebars or have the posts welded on or maybe fit one of those rivets with a thread in the middle, like those used for bottlecages, and retap the threads on the posts. I'm sorry I can't be of more help!

      Many thanks for the answer even if bad news! Thought as much - but I guess it wasn’t such a dumb thing to do - the centre ones are threaded and I had no way of knowing. I might try jiggling one about till it comes over a hole and then catch it with a wire and try and centre it - then super glue …. Then swear a lot : ) Great videos and lots for me study. I have the bike in bits except for the barrel lock which needs picking.
