    Has anyone thought of building a new version of the MEGA65 that runs a TMS99105A which is a 16 bit processor that just happens to have hardware floating point processing which could make for a very fast PC.

    • @OliverGraf
      @OliverGraf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again... the goal is to work with what is given, not to build the ideal mandelbrot set generator, which currently is most probably your PCs GPU... But: the core is open source, so feel free to give it a shot!

      Hmmm, well, if you would like to do "photographic" mandelbrot sets, the easiest way would be to use something with a better graphics card. The point of this is to work with what is given. You can always use a modern PC, use parallel processing and the GPU if you want to have realtime, hires results...

    This is absolutely fantastic! Obviously I would want all the functionality of the MiSTer but that won't ever be possible (perhaps a sub-set...) It would be great to have any of the 68k machines (Amiga, ST, Macintosh, Sun workstation...) It would be splendid to have DOS! Perhaps even something like a 386 with co-processor and run Windows 95... 😁

      The porting effort is currently aimed at 8 bit home computers. But we certainly want to see an Amiga 500 and an Atari ST. The C64 Core is laying the groundwork for further ports.

    Thank you so much for the hardware enlighten. Still, I have my reoccurring dream. I keep wondering about Commodore’s other line of 8-bit computers based upon the MOS 6502 derivatives. I keep pondering of the concept, what if via FPGA, one could implement a set of multiple predefined memory maps? Kind of like implementing a version of the VICE Commodore emulator on a FPGA. Though the twist, would be, that the device, would first boot up to blank GUI interface which outputs to a HDMI 1080p (1920 x 1080 resolution) output. As such, a VIC II video chip or an 8563 Video Display Controller (VDC) is emulated and shows up as either a 320 X 200 or 640 x 200 window on the HDMI display. Basically, a simple a right clink on the default blank screen, brinks a up short menu as to open/spawn 64K virtual address space, mapped to the choice of predefined memory maps. In essences, it's these virtual address space emulates (to some degree) either a C64, C128, the various Pet computer or even a CBM-II B128 computer. Ideally, I would like a built in CBM-488 and CBM PET IEEE buss.

    While floor planning like this can produce more consistent timing, you really should write the timing constraints to get consistent behaviour on things like the hyperbus. I've written a HyperRAM interface in about 200 cells for the Gowin GW1NR-9, where I did that timing by explicit instances of 4-bit SERDES IO blocks (one of which has an IODELAY on the clock), but without locking things in IOB hard function blocks what you need is relating the real world delays to the clocks. It's what SDC (synopsys design constraint) files are for. Once you have timing constraints in place the static timing analysis can report if it fails, and the timing driven place and route can try to get it right. The floor planning constraint reduces the temptation to do long paths, but doesn't tell the tool why they're wrong. HyperRAM can be a tricky beast. For one thing, the delay from clock to read data output isn't specified, but should ideally be measured at startup. That's probably part of why this HyperRAM controller is so large. Other parts might include totally redundant things like pipelined buffers. But the really significant part is if the IO registers aren't packed properly.

    The extended instruction set prefix puzzle has happened before. In the x86 architecture, many prefixes are formerly strange instructions, such as pop cs which would only alter the high bits of the instruction pointer. Another approach is to use a flag to switch instruction sets, like how x86 switched between 16 and 32 bit modes, or ARM switches to Thumb (reusing the bit that would do misaligned calls).

    • @OliverGraf
      @OliverGraf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that might have been a better choice. But it is what it is now :)

    • @0LoneTech
      @0LoneTech 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OliverGraf I'm not saying the solution was bad! The problem had different options available on different architectures, e.g. misaligned pointers don't exist with 8 bit instructions.

    Oliver, that’s fantastic! It’s great to see the paddle working nicely with Arkanoid - the way it should be played - on the MEGA65 with C64 core. It should either be played with a paddle, or with an arcade-style spinner - given there's no commercially available DB9 spinners, then a paddle’s the way to go!

    Hello Oliver, thanks for your great video...What can you do if the core doesn't work...I have the "blue light" problem....I tried the core with the identifier 100 MHz...I did no longer see the "blue light", it does not start... what can be the reason? Greetings Danny

    • @OliverGraf
      @OliverGraf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the Power light is solid green, and you get no picture, this is most probably a incompatibility with your display. HDMI outputs only HDMI (so with Audio). This means DVI connection will not work. And it starts with a 50Hz picture, this might also be a problem. To fix this blind press HELP, 4x CURSOR UP, RETURN to switch to 60Hz, this might help. If your display can only do DVI, then you can download the DVI test core. For all of this sy2002 is working on a more suitable solution. We also encountered Problems with high quality 8k HDMI cables. Try a basic one, the might work best. Or is it VGA? Then I need more information. If you can drop by in the MEGA65 discord channel #other-cores, this might be a more direct way to communicate.
