This November I will plant out another ten and have started the giant batch with 1,200 seeds bought from Sheffields Seeds promising 51% germination (let's see!). I started planting bunya pines all over San Diego where I live. I grew them from seed and started putting them in the ground at the local parks and canyons once they were about 6 feet tall. After about 2-3 years gophers started appearing everywhere and got pretty much all of them. It was so aggravating and heartbreaking at the same time. They would go from being perfect to turning brown out of nowhere and at first I didn't understand why but then figured it out. Now I do the chicken wire basket which I hope doesn't cause root problems. I cannot get anymore bunyas and nurseries won't sell them so I will hopefully someday come across some viable cones and give it another shot.

They don't do well in pots for very long and my yard is already full so I got to come up with something. They are hard to give away to people because most people are nervous about the gigantic cones and sharp foliage but I love them. They are very rare in Southern California and I have seen many large ones be cut down by people who are new homeowners to a house where there were very old trees already there or just people who don't appreciate them. It really is so sad.

Aha that large Carrefour saved me - I'd began my 3rd GR10 excursion this July 24 with my faithful Salomons, to realise on my night train from Paris to Lourdes that they were my older Salomons & not my newer ones that served me superbly last year (slight mild panic ensued) - they (the older ones) then proceeded to fall apart during the latter stages of Bareges to Vielle-Aure :0. The Carrefour had some awesome Euros 45 boots that then took me all the way to Bagneres de Luchon with No Blisters..... happy days with cheap n cheerful replacement footwear! The boys are back! Yay! I followed your first videos a couple of years back, which helped me immensely in my planning for my GR10. My 3rd journey in took me this year from Bageres to B-de-Luchon (I only had about a week sadly), so it looks like you've overtaken me on only your 2nd journey - I blame work! Last year I had to hole up in Cauterets for a couple of days to stem some sickness, but boy, that hike up to the campsite in front of Vignemale - WOW, and then over the pass.... WOW. So glad I didn't end my 2nd excursion by turning back; R&R at Cauteret did the trick. If you can, I'd recommend to return to do 18, 19 and 20 - Super :)

I've had the pleasure of seeing the General Sherman. Pictures don't do the size justice. It's incredible. It's like standing next to a giant building or something. Just massive. Also, I've been (many times) to a lesser known, but very interesting stand of Dawn Redoods, outside of Foresthill, California. The rare, 3rd type of redwood, and IMO, the most beautiful! They lose thier needles in the fall, need more water, and I would think would grow even better in the UK!

Hi from France! Thanks for making this video, it was fun to see several trees we also have here and have planted. Lots of sweet chestnuts and oaks around here, so we planted a few of those, of course. The sycamores spring up everywhere and I collected a bunch of seedlings from the playground (with my kid) where they had sprouted in a sandbox and weren't going to survive anyway Actually, I wasn't aware they were sycamores until I watched your video! I also have one giant redwood that sprouted in April so it's still very small, hopefully it will make it. Another one of my favourite trees is the catalpa, I have about 5 of those (3 in the ground, 2 still in pots). I also have 35 avocado seedlings and about 20 Washingtonia palm tree seedlings from this year but those are all tropical so I don't really expect them to survive the winters here.

@@vegardno Bonjour! Glad you enjoyed. Growing from seed is fun and so rewarding. I’ve started a community tree nursery and we are growing hundreds of trees now to give out to the local community. Happy growing!

Where around the world do the Giant Sequoias grow? Well, I can tell you, they are growing ...actually in many countries! There are arboretums and collections of trees around the world, in England, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, even Romania, where former members of nobility in the 1700's and the 1800's collected strange looking trees from around the world, as curiosities. There are Monkeypod, Araucarias, Dawn Redwood, and many others, also Sequoias having reached tremendous size in the meantime. There in Vienna, Austria I know of at least two places that have Redwood groves, planted not to preserve the species, but to be showpieces, and they are doing a great job in that sense. And, recently the Wollemia Pine, a rediscovered tree that was thought to be extinct millions of years ago, preserved only as fossils, was found alive and ..not well, but alive, and has since then been planted in many places around the world. I am happy to say that I feel that the movement of reforestation around the world is gaining momentum, still far outperformed, of course, by the destruction of forests. But we shall see!

In autumn, some years there are many, other years there are none. Oaks and other species have ‘mast years’ in theory to keep populations of acorn eating things in check. You’ll be able to tell in the summer what is growing. They grow so easy
