Giant Sequoia 2024 update

  • In 2015 I started growing sequoiadendron, and in 2020 I planted out the first three. In spring 2024 I planted another 5 and we return in October to see their progress.
    This November I will plant out another ten and have started the giant batch with 1,200 seeds bought from Sheffields Seeds promising 51% germination (let's see!).
    If you want to grow your own, you must check out George Maier and William Jin's work at Superlative Trees. They have trialled many conditions to maximise sequoiadendron germination, and it is this technique I use now. They also have YT how-to videos.

    Check back in future years as the Redwood Grove continues to grow and spread.

    Thank you for the video, will be great to see another update in the future I’m glad your trees are doing so well! I do a similar thing with my tree planting in both Australia and Canada :)

    Chicken wire in a triangular frame makes for a great sapling protector. Bloody Deer are a proper menace to my broadleafers..not too keen on them there Rowan and Sycamore.

    nice vid bro. Maybe try getting them in the ground early to reduce transplant shock

      Cheers. Do you mean plant them when they are younger and less rooted in the pots?

      @@jamaxadventures2068 yes. :) Some kind of shelter may help them be less exposed as well as your seedbed trial shows they like growing together.

    Respect mate. I started doing my own projects growing all sorts of trees for the past 4years
    I’ve only got 10 giant sequoias all officially Sprouted 21,3,21.
    Lost loads but the 10 I got are looking good about your sized ones.
    They ar going out this year can’t wait

      @bencollyer2296 nice! I plan on getting my 10 planted in December. I run @salhousecommunitytreenursery (Facebook page) and have grown probably 50+ tree species, sequioadendron are by far the hardest to get past 3 years. Have fun planting
      Where about are you?

    Looking forward to seeing some updates on these guys. Incredible growth in such a short space of time. I tried growing some - only managed to get one to germinate then it died as I accidentally let the seed tray get flooded :(
    Wishing you more luck than I had!

    Have you tried root pruning on any? Their roots seem to be so vigorous which tells me they might love some chopping off and starting fresh rather than the old channels.

      @@artistnumber12 I read or heard somewhere that they’re quite fussy when it comes to their roots. The ones that I’ve previously grown in air pruned root trainers have done very well. I’m going to use root trainers initially for my next big batch

    Hey mate where do you get your seeds from?

    • @jamaxadventures2068
      @jamaxadventures2068  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Psiloscrybin723 from Forestart and Chiltern seeds the germination rate is normally around 10 to 15% (costs 17p per germination), and then you might lose a third of those to damping off. I have just germinated a batch of seed from Sheffields Seeds in USA that yielded 50% germination(!!!) - superior seeds to what I’ve had from UK suppliers and cost about the same per germination at 16p per including shipping any phytosanitary certificate costs

    Jamax try to emulate atmosphere conditions - increase atmosphere pressure up to 2.3 - 3 and increase CO2 concentration and humidity and you can speed up growth like in Noah times before big flood

    • @Petya_KM
      @Petya_KM หลายเดือนก่อน

      do experiment how magnetic field will increase growth or electromagnetic field putting cord around roots and every seed in own condition

      @@Petya_KM interesting! Lots of questions. Have you tried this? Is this just for germination or first years growth?

    • @Petya_KM
      @Petya_KM หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No i just thinking about but right now our country start war in ukraine. But this information about pressure goes from archeologists who tell about big grouth trees because of pressure was 2.3 -3 and humidity and oxygen 31 percrnt concentration. Right now 21.

    • @Petya_KM
      @Petya_KM หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But for trees grow co2 need , for animals o2 need, so was somw cool condition when big trees created o2 up to 31 percentage and from anywhere also have co2

      @ I think it is not the country that wars but those in power. I do not know anyone who wants war, do you? We are the country, not the few who have control, spending our taxes on weapons. Peace ☮️
