Lock, Maybe, or Nah: UST Growling Tigers
To continue our Lock, Maybe, or Nah series, we're discussing the UT Growling Tigers.
This is a team we have mixed opinions about, but this is also a team that we are excited to watch. Can they finally make it out of the bottom of the UAAP? And can they actually compete for the Final Four? We'll decide their final roster and talk more about their chances.

Lock, Maybe, or Nah: DLSU Green Archers
มุมมอง 3.5K21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Fresh off a very impressive stint in the Kadayawan Festival in which they beat two PBA teams, we are now going to decide the final 16-man roster for the DLSU Green Archers. They have done a bunch of recruiting, both for Seasons 87 and 88, but they have also lost significant players, most notably Jonnel Policarpio.
Lock, Maybe or Nah: NU Bulldogs
มุมมอง 1.1Kวันที่ผ่านมา
To continue our Lock, Maybe, or Nah series, we are the discussing the NU Bulldogs, which is once again a dark horse contender for this coming season. While their core remains essentially the same except for the loss of Baclaan and Malonzo, they still have a deep talent pool and a big decision to make regarding their FSA. The Boleros discuss the potential breakout candidates for this upcoming season and of course, no more Mason Amos or Jonnel Policarpio.

Manaytay and caban̈ero study and play in same school in cebu.
Nice! Thanks for the info!
D si patrick yu yung part ng gilas 23 for 23 ni coach chot. Joshua sinclair po yun. Pero same high school program lang sila nanggaling.
Thank you for correcting us 😊
suspend nyo uli si Momowei para pumasok ang Ateneo sa final four, haha
Hi guys! I love the fact that you kept mentioning the UST lacked bigs. With Tounkara, Mahmood, Manaytay, Crisostomo, Laure, and Versoza, I'm pretty sure a lot of Ateneo fans are pretty jealous with this depth chart compared to what they have right now 😂. Mamigay naman kayo hahahaha
Hahahahaha Peter Osang, Ateneo ka na lang!
I hope for Coach Peter Martin since he's also an assistant at SMB, I do wish he brings JMF in the UST practices to give Brix 1v1 sessions with The Kraken. Let him learn from the 7-time PBA MVP, hone his skills and mature his game so kung sakali ma foul trouble sina Tounkara ang Mahmood and they have no other bigs to rely on, they can rely on Brix Versoza for big man mins. Yun lang.
Hello Sam Gab and Maui! Agree naman ako sa mga picks nyo, although I think youre being hard on SJ Moore. Kid obviously has potential. Wala lang talagang ibinigay na minutes si Pido sa Kanya to showcase his talent. We dont know bakit ganun nangyari sa debut season nya pero tingin ko kailangan lang nya ng playing time. And i dont know about you but, I also think Juno Sauler should call the shots and Pido should slide as a Team Manager. Lock si Sauler as Head coach, Nah for Pido. Yun lang. Great Episode as Always, Guys! 🙏 Great show as always Guys. Keep it up.
Baka nga too hard kami on SJ Moore. In my opinion though, he should definitely transfer to the NCAA or out of UST. Dami niyang competition for minutes dun - Gab
@@bolerosph transferring back to NCAA is a good move, Tama kayo. Pero, kung sa UAAP sya, sa UE may pwesto sya for sure.
Ateneo next? 😅
Most likely hehe
I believe DLSU had only 15 players last yr ( w/ Isaiah Philips included ) and I heard Coach Topex said he has 1st, 2nd & 3rd group in practices.
For the last two slots in this team, your guess is as good as mine.😂 😂
Daming alam nung Gab pota
My final 16 Kevin Quiambao #28 Mike Philips #41 Earl Abadam #12 Jaycee Macalalag #1 CJ Austria #16 Henry Agunane #21 Raven Cortez #6 Vhoris Marasigan #2 Matthew Rubico #26 Alex Konov #20 Lian Ramiro #11 Joshua David #5 Ethan Alian #64 EJ Gollena #32 Dungo #19 Ogana #24
No love for Zamora or Romero? 🤣
They are loaded, topex has done a great job attracting players to join dlsu and of course management is superb
Lasalle has always been loaded. They never had issues with recruiting top talent. They have had problems getting the right coach to harness the talent of blue chip recruits. Coach Topex has done a good job establishing a winning culture. As was the case when Coach Aldin was the coach. Remember even recently they were able to get Nelle, KQ, Mike Phillips etc even before winning a Uaap title. -Maui
Screw the Avengers... this is now the most ambitious crossover event in history. 😤
I guess of all IAAP.member.schools.Ateneo toos the strictest guidelines on their student athletes.even Thirdy Ravena suffered the same faye its nit a big issue players who doesn't pass their QPI can always look for.other schools na.mas.mauwag sa academia requirements
11:43 i don't think this is accurate. Otherwise dapat sipa na sina thirdy, di lang sit-out, when they failed to meet the 'lower' athletes' QPI 15:00 Ipantay lang ng admu ang qpi for both athletes and regular students and they'll be able to keep players like cj perez, who himself said he passed the regular stiudents' qpi
Accurate yata.
@@davedc102 The comparison is admu's regular students (non-athletes) and their athletes. If indeed mas mababa QPI for athletes (required min average grade) then dapat sipa na si thirdy, whether may pan-tuition sya o wala, when he failed to meet this Re scholarship, correct. Pag scholar, mas mataas maintaining grade/QPI. But these are athletic, not academic, scholars. Iba ang value nila sa school. They bring in mileage, that in turn increases enrollment revenues, alumni funding, corporate sponsorships etc. Kaya nga ginagastusan ng schools mga sports teams nila, including recruitment, for such returns
As far as I know Ateneo’s qpi requirement is higher than the Uaap and then you have Coach Tab’s QPI requirement which is higher than Ateneo’s passing requirement. For players/students who have a lower QPI than Ateneo’s requirement you can appeal if you have a failing qpi and not get kicked out immediately. Often times they give you another chance, a probationary period. That could be another reason why players don’t get kicked out immediately and sometimes sit out one year. Recent examples are Verano, Credo and Jolo Mendoza. I believe the higher Athlete qpi was only initiated when Tab Baldwin came aboard. Thirdy had failing grades the year before he came in. -Maui
@@bolerosph Hi maui, as clarified, tie comparison was bet admu's athletes and its non-athletes (admu's regular students). So by your post, and cj's own acct, nico wasn't being truthful when he claimed admu required lower qpi for its athletes compared to its non-athletes (regular admu students) 11:47 So that's the question, why should admu require higher qpi for its athletes compared to its regular students? Inferior ba regular students ng admu that's why they're required lower qpi? Is it bec these athletes are scholars and given other perks? But as mentioned, the ROI for these athletes are immediately felt by the school(e) thru enrollment revenues, alumni support, merchandise sales etc
Its Coach Tab who requires higher QPI not ADMU as far as I know. Ateneo’s QPI requirement is different also from Uaap requirement. Maybe why CJ couldnt play despite passing the Uaap Grade requirement? I’m not sure havent seen the CJ perez interview/article regarding this. That was pre Tab Baldwin. All I know is the 7 players didnt have passing Ateneo Qpi (per articles during that time) which is why they opted to leave instead of sitting out another year. Now am not sure if Coach Tab sits out players who are below his required QPI I would believe so. Regardless if its his requirement then players have to meet them if they want to play for him. Am fairly certain Ateneo’s only requirment is to pass. Can’t speak for Nico but I think what he’s saying is Ateneo Qpi requiremnet for students >Uaap Qpi Requirement which has always been the case. Maybe he meant other scholars when he said other students. -Maui
7:25 cj himself said he passed the regular students' qpi, so least likely that he was kicked our. I won't be surprised if there were others with a similar situation Perhaps budget issue. They had to choose who bet tab and the recruits ang i-retain lol
Pinagsasabi nito na mahirap makapasok madali magstay sa UP... Akala ko ba taga UP ka? Nag generalize ka agad? Mas marami ako kilala na mas nadalian makapasok, mas nahirapan magstay. Dami ko kaklase from AHS, all talk, pero performance wise, left a lot to be desired. Masyado niyo gusto iprop up yang academic standard kuno ninyo samantalang kayo kayo lang naman nagpapaniwala diyan.
17:45 'branding' Ika nya (sam) mismo But the truth may be quite different. Apparently ganun din daw sa bar exams. May 'screening' test, to check if may tyansa ba pumasa yung examinee. Otherwise wag muna mag-take if malabo. Again, DAW lol
Yung mga uto uto lang naman magpapaniwala diyan sa surface level claims nila. Most of ADMU athletes that made it big after graduating are those that are actually athletically excellent and can make money on their chosen sport, or the nepo babies. Otherwise nada (Gretchen Ho is the only exception). UP has Bersola, Mikee, even Gelo Vito and even Estranero are succeeding beyond their chosen sport. These guys were not the typical star players and household names pero they are still making a mark which speaks to quality education. Delulu lang yata talaga tong mga to🤮
Ang funny lang na before pinagtatawanan ng mga fans from other UAAP schools ang UP kasi lagi daw nirarason ang acads or binibring up ang world univ rankings. Bilog nga ang bola.
Yung mahirap makapasok pero madali magstay, I said that was what upperclassmen told me when I was entering college. Hindi po ako yung nag imbento nun. But I do believe that there is some truth to it. First of all, I think we can all agree that UP Diliman is the most desirable or popular college among high school students. It attracts students all over the Philippines and it cuts across all socio economic classes. So the fact na lahat ng tao gusto makapasok sa UP (especially Diliman) makes it even more difficult to get in. Unlike Ateneo or La Salle na mas pang mayaman ang market. If there’s less applicants, then there’s less competition to get in. Dun naman sa easy to stay, I think you proved my point. I’m pretty sure yung AHS classmates mo na patapon hindi naman nakick out sa UP diba? Maybe they were forced to shift or baka nadelay, pero they probably still graduated in UP. Tbh, never pa ako nakarinig ng UP student na natanggal sa UP because of acads (unless siguro di ka na pumapasok). On the other hand, maraming natatanggal ng Ateneo after 1st and 2nd year (I’m not from Ateneo but I know people na natanggal, and my lola used to teach in Kalayaan College tas lagi siyang may a few students from Ateneo College every year). Hence, mas madali magstay sa UP from my perspective. Mas lenient UP sa non-performing students. Parang may chance ka pa to get your shit together. I personally found the UPCAT tough, but I know a lot of people na nadalian din. So baka depende rin talaga sa training mo and expertise. Hope this clarified what I said. - sam
My own fantasy: Final 4, up vs ust; dlsu vs admu. The two bitterest rivalries in the league. Could be quite boring though, given the line-up disparities Then dlsu vs up sa finals, a more intense rivalry given that barako both teams/communities lol
UP and UST are not rivals though. Never have been from UP's perspective. Maybe one-sided ang bitterness.
@@masakitnakatotohanan7024 They are actually, esp the 2000's CDC. Their 'cybersabunutan' as they called it then was very intense lol. The last iteration came in 2019 men's basketball stepladder final 4, when the tigers upset the maroons. Once smc revives ust basketball, to the current level of the maroons, this rivalry will ignite again They also are the biggest communities in yuap, so pag ma-revive nga rivalry na to, dapat phil arena na lol
👀
Hi Guys! Nice collaboration with Naveen and Nico. I hope to watch more of this in the future. Hi Maui! You are truly the no. 1 fan of Ateneo. I counted you mention "Ateneo" thirty-one times during the podcast. Kudos to you!
He is the Ateneo whisperer 🤣 - Gab
Somebody has to be optimistic. I will be. But really believe the race for 4th seed of final four is wide open. If Nu struggles like it did during filoil maybe both slots could be open. Leaving any of the other 6 teams battling for those 2 spots. -Maui
enlighten me. no hate pero parang mas nag aral pa pala si ryan buenafe sa ateneo?.. napanuod ko kasi interview nya kay mikee reyes. iba ung kwento nya nung nsa ateneo sya.
Iba talaga kwento ng players mismo. Like 'special' acet etc I reckon their accounts of what really happens in admu basketball are more truthful lol
Gab and Maui are in agreement that UP is a tier higher that DLSU after defeating them in filoil and the recruitment of QMB yet predict a DLSU championship. I'm confused.
Hahahaha I said it in the episode, in my mind, UP is the favorite to win the championship because on paper, they are deeper and with more talent all around. But in my heart, I think DLSU can peak at the right time and KQ can carry them to a title Upsets can happen naman 😁 - Gab
Maui had a similar reasoning in S85. He said UP was the favorite to win the championship but predicted Ateneo to win 😊 Prediction is for the future naman. We think UP is the better team now but that might not be the case in the future - Gab
@@bolerosph Gab, if that's the case then DLSU should definitely be the favorites then in your books and not UP. Notwithstanding the valid reasons for UP as being the favorite (I think they are actually), your hunch or gut feel that the KQ factor is too much to overcome for UP in the end should place DLSU a tier above or at the least the same level as UP in your books. Semantics lang siguro hehe but I understand where you are coming from.
@@bolerosph Mas lalo ako naguluhan, Gab. 🤣 Di ba when considering who are the favorites you should factor in the future? Picking the favorites is same as making a prediction right?
Uh hindi naman. UP are the favorites now in my book but for prediction, I think DLSU can upset and edge UP in the finals Picking a favorite right now is very different from prediction of the future
Wow even till now the nerves saying ADMU will be part of F4. Nahiya buong UAAP and NCAA na wala silang win sa other leagues this off season. And lalo mahihiya UST, FEU, UE, ADU and UE na lamang pa Ateneo sa kanila. Hibang lang talaga 🤮
Maui, mahiya ka raw HAHAHA - Gab
Hahaha! I standby my prediction that the final 1 or maybe even 2 slots for final four is wide open to any of the teams oustide UP and DLSU. -Maui
And who’s that middle guy who can’t move on after Mason’s transfer? Ang tigas ng mukha. I only believe in the Boleros and Naveen. The fifth one is a Saling Cat
LOL. It just goes to show you didn’t listen to what the question was. Naveen asked us if Francis Lopez leaving or Mason Amos’ departure hurt more from Ateneo’s perspective. So hindi nalang ako sasagot ganun? Stay classy my friend 😂
+1 kay Nico 🤣
Enough of this academics issue. For everybody’s information, Ateneo is the sile school that accepts students they had previously kicked out. It’s still happening since the late 60s. Now, they absorb almost 50% of their Acet takers. Their standard is going down the drain. I read two months ago they were having financial difficulties. Even their graduates are not in the top ten of employers’ list for two years now. Personnel heads say they ask for too much but cannot give anything that is satisfactory enough
Mataas grades ni Lebron Lopez sa UP.
Up and La Salle have higher academic standards
Ateneo's sustained excellence cannot be emphasized enough. Yes, they have a final 4 streak since 2014. But before that, they had another streak from 1999-2012. So from 1999-2024, they only missed the final 4 ONCE. That's Spurs-like consistency with Boston Celtics level championship pedigree. So tama nga sabi ni Maui. They can afford to have a rebuilding year. :)
What an epic collab, this collab is 🔥 I hope you'll collab again once UAAP is just around the corner, overall I really enjoyed watching it.
parang nag-assemble lang Avengers
let's talk about other teams naman. im tired of hearing of ateneo. they're not going to be champions every year. ateneo is not even a final four contender with their "trash" lineup. their preseason games already gave us a glimpse on what to expect from them this coming season.
Correct to the last dot
You can check out our previous episodes 😊 we've discussed the other teams extensively. It just so happens that Naveen invited 4 Ateneans and prepared questions about Ateneo. Makes sense naman 😁
Let's Go! Give your early prediction for UAAP finals S87
Boleros > Naveen
Totally agree with the Ateneans here. Most of the players who made it through the QPI with or without a championship are very successful in life inside or outside basketball. Values that you learn in school mold us to be successful in life.
They forgot Kyle Perez
He hasn't played for DLSU the whole off season though. And no news of whether he will play
Hey Maui, reminder na nag-commit ka na mag-sando in a previous ep. Sumama ka na rin Sam. 😂 About DLSU beating PBA teams, to be fair naman they did not need a FSA. Actually lugi PBA teams if may FSA DLSU kasi may 6’6 height limit pa rin imports sa PBA this upcoming conference, next conference pa daw yung unli height. Sobrang joke talaga na sa pro level may height limit ang import pero sa college walang limit ang FSA. Generally agree with your line-up. I’m also unsure about the last spots sa roster if mas advantageous na ilagay mga “trust fund players” (Zamora, Romero) or mga players na pwedeng hugutin/i-develop (Ogana, Buenaventura). Depends gaano kalaki contribution ng families ng legacy players siguro hahaha idk. Si Isaiah Phillips feel ko pwedeng mag-follow sa footsteps ng Kuya Ben niya and join DLSU men’s volleyball as MB (not a lot of tall boys sa men’s vb here in PH kasi hinahatak agad tall boys sa basketball from a young age). I really hope DLSU coaches and management communicate to the players na who will make the roster para may time pa mga players like Alian to transfer last-minute and just use the upcoming year for residency. Agree na si Luis Pablo sobrang malas. 😅 He was one of the first bigs who went to DLSU this offseason, so I’m assuming he didn’t have all the info when he made his decision to go there. Ang malas niya kasi Konov and Amos went to DLSU after he went there.
"Sumama ka na rin Sam" hahahahaha love it. Sige pressure niyo pa si Sam mag sando! Once he does, I will never let it go until we die - Gab
And yes, that PBA height limit is crazy. The Japan B League has no such thing and it has promoted better competition there
The big mistake of Pablo was he moved to Up instead of joining Dlsu
If I'm the young Zamora, I'll backout for delicadeza sake. Esp after hearing this HAHA. And we all know he can't play.
Kobe Demisana just Joined the Adamson
Yup he is. Apparently didnt meet the QPI/grade requirement to be eligible for S87 for Ateneo. Adamson is strict too with their players I hope he makes sure he will be eligible for S88 for then. Dounga and a few players were ruled ineligible for S86 bec of this. -Maui

Walang Zamora o Romero? 😁
@@bolerosph nyahahha wag muna please haha yung isa nga dun parang takot pa sa bola at takbong pang intrams eh 😅 I hope they stick to whatever principles they have and stop lining up kids who really can’t make it. Sayang yung totoong talented and hardworking.
It’s going to be a match up between guards and bigman with DLSU and UP being the favorites this season. Anlalaki ng mga players ng la salle😂😂😂
Malaki rin ang UP 😁 don't underestimate them - Gab
DSLU just defeated 2 PBA teams and lost by 1 against a 3rd. I think we are the only country in the world where basketball amateurs are willing to keep their amateur status as long as possible. People would argue that they need time to be ready to move on, the wins against these professional teams go against this. The only reason i can think of is that the monetary rewards are sufficient - and they don't pay taxes (we are enabling them) and they need to play only 2 months in a year. The UAAP values say "By emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, UAAP creates an environment that encourages collegiate sports teams to compete with dignity and uphold the principles of fair play", but a professional league disguising as amateur without clear rules on allowances and recent massive piracy of talent goes against the direction of fair play. Soon enough the league will lose excitement without a balance of talent. One last observation is that these changes exacerbated when politicians became boosters.
All 100% true. And the only solution the UAAP can think of is to add residency years for transferees 🙃🙃🙃
Boleros you guys should be the commentators for the UAAP, mas okay tlga. Ganda ng combination nyo.
Hehehe thank you! We doubt it will happen but we never know 😁
KQ dapat mag pro na and Michael Phillips para mabigyan ng chance ibang players. Masyado na silang magaling sa league. Give chance to the younglings.
Hmm i think they will play their full 5 years, especially KQ. He recruited his friends, Baclaan and Cortez, to play with him so medyo kupal naman kung aalis siya hahahaha - Gab
Sobra lakas UP next season. Dami nalagas sa DLSU, especially Nelle. Sgro next, next season kaya na, pero next season i doubt it, la na rin si Poli. Who know or another epic fail of UP, nauna ksi bonfire bago ung prize.
Agree. UP is the team-to-beat in S87 without a doubt
That was said in 86. It’s too much talent that results in a failure
The Zamora or Romero trust fund comment got me 😂
Hahaha! We gotta call it as it is! -Maui
Hanep sa yaman ung dalawang yan. Mas lalo na si Romero, ksma sa forbes dad nya. Damn son. They better prove themselves to wear that green and white jersey.

hope they stop forcing Jcee at the 1... shaky handling lalo na pag end game.. he's a natural SG not pg David is a better option at PG now, Rubico can have the future GAB..
Hopefully David can get healthy. Rubico looks like he has potential to be good. Problem is Baclaan and Cortez is coming next season. He me be buried on the bench for the next couple of years. -Maui
@@bolerosph for next year, i think they’re going the Nelle/Nonoy PG/SG route for Cortez, Baclaan.. while Rubico comes off the bench as the 2nd string PG (like how David came on for Nelle).. let’s see 😄
Macalalag slips most of the time
Baclaan is not yet out of the woods. He still has a pending case with La Salle
Heirarchy... PG: David, Ramiro, Rubico / SG: Macalalag, Austria, Dungo / SF: Abadam, Gollena, Vhoris / PF: KQ, Konov / C: Mike, Agunnane, Raven
Russell ogana magpapakilala yan sa inyo
Pinili namin siya! 😁 We liked him
Proud Bulakenyo Russell Ogana. Ganda ng laro nya sa PinoyLiga, kailangan lang bigyan ng bigyan ng chance
He’ll be valuable
I expect KQ to be veteran Nelle type leadership and faster ball handling. He gets cooked by athletic wings like Lopez Perkings etc He must absolutely maintain composures. Been taking a lot of rushed shots esp in the late.
True. Athletic wings try him a LOT.. and his endgame issues, I think he misses a Nelle type composure guard to calm them down (then again he is the Elder statesman now in 2024 he should be the composed one)
KQ is still transitioning to playing the wing/guard position fulltime. There will be heartaches but you can see the potential. With the way he works I’m sure he’ll ge a lot better come 2nd round. -Maui
