Japanese, and actually any Asian languages, are good for general education because they are part of very different cultures. It helps acquire a deeper understanding of HOW cultures and people can be different, and this knowledge can play a big role in critical thinking and general understanding what kind of place the world is I’m now majoring in sociology, and it would be much harder for me if I weren’t learning Japanese. It helps a lot to have two very distinct cultures to compare through the lens of a theory, and generally see how a theory is or is not applicable and in what contexts.

I think writing is an important thing for memorizing vocabulary well, it is for other languages like Russian, but you know you're right about the rest realized the early output thing its hard to speak a lot without being in the country too and its alright I used to beat myself up about having more input than output but its actually good

Damn... the last one ".. because AI is going to be able to do it for me..." broke the back of the camel here. I had my enthusiasm, persistence and motivation all along the video, until this last sentence that totally swept a solid ground under my feet. 😂 painfully devastating to realize that how much effort it will take to learn any reasonable level of this lanquage and pretty soon everyone will have an app in their phones that is simultaneously translate everything in your ear plug and will instantly create a translated response back according to your own given preference anyway. 😮

Already wasting my life as neet so why not learn that shounen anime premise? Nobody would want me to be a pilot or accountant anyway, they already consider me as communist and lowlife. Actually, I could do great things in Japanese. They're missing out by not having me be their slave. Best they can get is that Mexican drug cartel mule they pulled over to replace me, I forgot how to say Pythagorean in english anyways.

"just learn words as they are otherwise you're wasting time" So true, I don't even know if onyomi is the conjugation or if it's the japanese or chinese saying or if it's yoyomi. I'll play around with kanji conjugations when I become comfortable with them. But yeah, I'm in roadblock because other reasons. Think I'm just mind numbingly lazy.

I've only discovered Tuyu halfway through this year, the first song i listened to was Damonisch than was quickly infatuated by the rest. I will never forget Tuyu because it was their music that made me more confident and continue drawing and start to play the electric guitar. One day I plan to have finished drawing the characters and hopefully play the electric guitar to their songs. No matter how hopeless it is I pray a similar band may arise akin to that of the Tuyu composition, because no matter how many J-Pop bands I find they can't fully create rhythms and music like Tuyu's. For now I will continue to listen to Tuyu even when Pusu decides to delete the songs, I will archive it and pray that the rainbow will come shortly after the rain ends.

I've commented on your videos before (1+ years ago?). It's interesting to see how you've evolved, and if you're still in Japan, I hope that means you are enjoying life here, which is a good thing! I respectfully completely disagree with your "studying Japanese reading and writing is completely optional" take. At least if someone has a goal of becoming fluent. It is totally possible that studying Japanese is a waste of time, though, as it takes a long time and a lot of effort. It took me about 3 years living and working in Japan to pass Level 1 of the JLPT. When I retook the test years later, I got a perfect score. I studied the English meanings and how to write (and not forget) kanji using Heisig's Remembering the Kanji 1 -- before I could speak any japanese. It was frustrating because the time I put into studying kanji meant delaying being able to have conversations with the people around me (everyone at my workplace was japanese, so I had infinite opportunitites to use Japanese every day -- if I could actually communicate!). During that first year I could recognize most of the Joyo kanji, but I couldn't say anything until I switched to studying conversation and grammar. But knowing kanji meant that learning kanji compounds was stupidly easy. The first time I saw 糖尿病 for example (at a hospital I visited -- not me!) I instantly knew what it meant, even though I couldn't say it. It's super important to do both book learning (or an app or whatever) and also use the language. After 30 years here, I recently started watching フリーレン and because it is a fantasy, there are still words that don't come up in ordinary daily life, so I don't know them, but with the subtitles on and ChatGPT as my reliable sidekick, I'm adding expressions like 「潮時」to my vocabulary. I wonder if I'll ever have a chance to use it in conversation. But the meaning is easy to remember. Getting to JLPT N1, if you study the right way, can be (relatively) quick, especially if you live in Japan. I think if I had been studying full time, I could have done it in a year or two max. But there's a lot to learn after that, and just because you have N1 doesn't mean you are native level. But is it really worth many years of your life to become fluent? Answering that is not so easy. Good luck on your journey.

i wanted to write about my personal experience. i watched this video when it came out and it really assisted my learning journey. (started learning like a month prior) but i had always struggled to motivate myself so after a few weeks of anki i usually gave up before picking it up again after a week or two i think i had a pretty strong reason to learn japanese: im really discontent with everything in my city so i plan to move to japan in the future (people in my city are not respectful to others by any means, plus its very expensive here and i cannot afford my own house or a decent apartment until i save into my 30s or find a good job somewhere so i am living with my parents. plus japan seems like a really good change of pace for me and i genuinely am looking to start over) but even with that motivation to study everyday after a while i either forget or procrastinate and say i'm going to do this later that day. i never end up doing it. however pretty recently i found a way to study that i found personally better than doing anki 2k deck everyday. I started using jpdb.io and searching for low difficulty animes i'd want to watch or rewatch, and then i add small decks episode by episode (the first few had a ton of new words, so it took a little while to finish the decks, but after that its only a few to like a few hundred new words each time. even if i dont understand grammar being able to watch anime in japanese and understand all or almost all of the words is enough for me to at least semi understand. i had enjoyed this a lot more because studying a shorter deck with a clear finishing goal (to be able to understand the words in the episode) helped me convince myself to do it each day and helped me get a very direct positive feedback to the time i spent learning. pretty soon im going to go back to a 2k deck and finish off all of the words i dont know hope my experience is helpful to someone
