We Planted Our Entire Garden For Color (And You Should Too)
In mid October I discovered Lantern Flys in my very large tall Maple tree. I killed whatever I could reach but am concered about the eggs and nymphs for Spring. I would like to try this type of trap. When you are using the plastic hardware cloth do other beneficial insects get sacrificed? Also what month do you suggest setting it up to get the first hatchlings? ( I live in N.E. Ohio) I have to assume the nymphs will be hatching all over the tree so what is the best height to place the trap? Yikes!!!
@@gracestokes3288 she sure is! Thanks for the comment!
Awesome video. I love Lynn's gardens, pictures and presentations. What a talented lady!!

So inspirational! Thanks for stopping by!
Great content, Heather! It was enjoyable to listen to your conversation with Craig.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment❤
What do you use to spray on the black mold and sticky residue?
@msmedic731 I use a steady stream of water from the nozzle of a hose. That worked.
Heard you on your podcast today and your mention of CraigHouse. I live near there and didn’t really know what it was all about till your podcast! That’s awesome! Always wondered how I could get pine straw here in Mt Holly Springs. It’s for sale everywhere in Raleigh NC where two of my kids live but never had room in the car to bring some up. Really enjoy your channel! I’m going to learn sooooo much more, as I have an interest in pollinators and native plants.
Thanks for the kind comments! We would love to show you around Craighead sometime. Link to purchase pinestraw 😊salthay.com/?sca_ref=6541009.icnw4KB2XV
I ve been battling spotted lantern fly this Fall on my 13 maple trees by the thousands per tree!! Terrible!! Had the last year and didn’t know about them…just wonder why all my trees were black! Power washed them all this Spring and scraped eggs that I could get to into a bucket of soapy water. Spring 2024 began with horrendous amounts of Boxelder in garden in sheds everywhere. Scrape off eggs daily. Then the SLF infestation. I live along a corn/soybean field and beyond that a tree-lined train track. I have no hope that SLF will “ move on”.
Mt Holly Springs Pennsylvania Cumberland County Dickinson Twp ☝️
@@mammaubear8647 yes eventually it will. Its been 3 years since they showed up here in Mechanicsburg, and while I see them (now rarely) it does get better!

Now I know why I keep feeling rain drops while sitting under our silver maple tree. We had almost no grapes this year because of these Beezlebubs. Time to go to war, LOL.

Mosquito Larvae Trap Buckets WORK. for a 5 gal bucket, only 1/4 Bti Mosquito Dunk required per month. Amount of Mosquito Dunk is based on surface area not volume.
Thanks for the additional insight!
What an impressive project--thank you for adding it to our community! Also, thanks so much for the mention as one of your native plant growers/providers.
You converted me...woot-woot! I'm also interested in the salt hay for vegetable gardening (especially when last year's leaves have disintegrated!).
its such a great mulch for veggie beds @donnasmooth. You will love it!
Great video! Thanks so much for this easy and economical fix for those nasty mosquitoes.

You didn’t tell Me where to cut!
@@juliesmith9379 thanks for that feedback. I recommend cutting right under the previous blossom. Also- Look for new shoots and cut above that if possible.
These would be perfect for my strawberry bed.
I think you will be very happy! I have used both pinestraw and salt hay in my beds for mulch and the veggies/fruit love it!
You hit a homerun with this one. I've been using this for years in my strawberry patch. Keeps berries clean. My neighbor has long needle pines so I collect them by the bag full with my riding mower. I'ts good you can make gardeners aware of this with you're platform. You are a five foot two treasure !!
@@charlesmcglaughlin thata fantastic news about their use with strawberries! Appreciate the feedback!
It's beautiful! I've been wondering what mulch is best for allowing natives to reseed themselves. Thanks for sharing.
@@awildapproach thanks for the feedback!
tape is terrible. we had a beautiful downy woodpecker get caught in it. Awful. It lived, but had to go to the rescue center.
definitely need to cover it to prevent that from happening! Sorry that happened, thanks for sharing your experience so others can learn.
How to kill on contact? Any spray?
@Jlui83 Thanks for the question. It is never my recommendation to spray as it may kill other insects that are not your target and might be harmful to you. HOWEVER, there is a product identified by penn state that uses soil fungi to eliminate them. Its called Beauveria bassina that is not harmful to you, and you can read more about it here: www.ydr.com/story/news/2019/08/30/biopesticide-being-tested-battle-spotted-lanternfly-pa-pesticide-penn-state-cornell/2149638001/
I'm very inspired to turn my front lawn into a meadow!! Thank you!
@@christinabasonic excited to hear that!
You are wrong when stating ONLY Common milkweed has thick leaves. Asclepias Speciosa (Showy) also has very thick leaves after it’s first year and Calotropis gigantea and Procera have thicker leaves.
Thanks for that feedback! You are correct- I should have been more precise that I do not cut the other the milkweeds in my garden (butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, although I do trim off butterfly weed blooms to get a second flush.) Showy, Calotropis and procera, are not native to my area, ecozone 8 and I typically grow (and recommend) local ecotypes. Sounds like you might have these in your garden Do you typically cut yours back, and recommend others do so as well?
