ITA - Anglia TV Start up mid 1960s
มุมมอง 27K16 ปีที่แล้ว
Start of transmissions Picaso tuning signal with music, "Sea Songs" by, Vaughn Williams. This signal was broadcast on ITV Anglia, in the East Of England in the 1960s until the start of colour transmissions in the late 1960s. It was broadcast by the ITA from the Mendlesham, Sandy Heath and Belmont VHF 405 line TV transmitters on Channels, 11, 6 and 7.
Used to put television on early to warm up as must have had a dodgy valve and took time to get a full screen picture. Happy memories
I am sometimes amazed by the number of soundalike versions of this opening music. None but the one i have which is poorer quality because it was recorded from the true original is correct but hey does it matter? Well maybe.
What joyful tunes. Thank you.
We had a choice of TWW, midlands, or Granada Television, with midlands my brother put a small booter on the Aerial , listening to Programs was improved.....Happy days long gone
"This is the Associated British Cinemas Weekend Television, broadcasting on channel 8 at the Litchfield, channel 9 at the Winter Hill and channel 10 at the Embley Moor transmitters of the Independent Television Authority"
"This is Anglia Television, broadcasting to the east of England on channels 6, 7 and 11, from the Belmont, Sandy Heath and Mendlesham transmitters of the Independent Television Authority"
"This is ATV Network, which provides your Monday to Friday programmes on channel 8, broadcasting on the Lichfield transmitter of the Independent Television Authority"
Thought sound and vision was the ABC start up tune
Love anything old television
Today part of Granada, Lancelin Television, Yorkshire.
The Emley Moor transmitter was turned over to Yorkshire Television in 1968.
Nice video 👍
I remember this coming on about 4pm weekday afternoons, just before Anglia opened and children's programmes started...remember Twizzle, Torchy the Battery Boy etc - halcyon days, thank you for jogging my memory
Nice to see test cards again also music used by cyclists special in full thanks for posting all test cards 👍
Funtastic!
I'd love this as my ringtone
They don’t dare put a testcard in digital
Where’s the Boring eye and Acossiated TeleVision text?
I used to sit glued to the telly at 4.45 waiting for Jean More tons dulcit tones...and the end animation sadly missing from this video. The music used was not the commercially available version.
I noticed 'Portsmouth' in the Anglia main startup music - so that's why Alan Partridge had it on his playlist!
Was the fourth track used on The IT Crowd on the episode where Jen fell in love?
Perpetuum Mobile was heard over the tuning signal on ABC whereas the second half of the start up tune had a showbiz tune.
The ABC March?
Wonderful music, thanks for uploading on TH-cam for everyone to enjoy.
This lively version of Vaughan Williams' 'Sea Songs' was swiftly followed by the 'Alla Hornpipe' from Handel's 'Water Music' suite, a Malcolm Sargent recording I think, played as the 'Anglia Knight' revolved-see its eponymous Wiki. The music choices established a nautical tone, appropriate as not only was _Nelson_ a Norfolk man but, in the 1960s, Norwich had a thriving port, while trawlers and drifters packed Gt Yarmouth's harbour since fishing was still an important local industry. After the music, a stentorian voice-Anglia presenter Dick Graham by the sound of it-proudly announced (I write from memory): "This is Anglia Television, broadcasting to the East of England on channels 6, 7 and 11, from the Belmont, Sandy Heath and Mendlesham transmitters of the Independent Television Authority". It had been just Mendlesham at first but new transmitters eventually came on stream.
"This is Anglia Television, Broadcasting (a full-colour service after ITV went to colour in November 1969) to East of England from the transmitters of the Independent Television Authority" (from Wednesday 13 July 1972 It's name changed to the Independent Broadcasting Authority). That's how the announcement at the end would look like, then the Anglia Knight Ident will play out in full, then it will show the lineup for that transmitter's day of programming and then the Anglia clock.
Although the card is as sharp as it might have appeared to a '60s viewer of 405 line transmission of the time, these days it needs much higher resolution. If that's possible, of course. And can we be sure that an Anglia op-out would not have used such a track? Or Peter Fenn!!!!!!
Lovely memories, sitting cross legged in front of the TV after school at half past 4 in excited anticipation of children' hour programs - Mom was in the kitchen getting food ready and you knew that she would call out to sit down for Tea as you as soon as the programs started - Sometime there was a problem at the TV station and they played this over and over again till it was fixed :-) Happy Days...
Regrettably the London ITV big kids after envying 'Auntie' BBC with their 'very original BBC1 and BBC2 station names (!) wanted desperately to reduce the otherwise marvellous regional company names to a 'one size fits all' ITV1, ITV 2 etc - just like 'Auntie' so classic company names such as Anglia Television had to go, along with regional variations of programmes and original character of presentation. No-one bothered to ask the viewer - he/she only bought the products which paid for it and had identified with their local regional company, its individual logo and theme tune. But what matter the 'rolling out' (using a steam roller ?) of ITV was complete, the various company boards became one, the programme variety diminished in the face of satellite instead of cashing in on a wide variety of station company names of which Anglia could have been one of the brightest to attract viewers, drab boring ITV was lost. To add insult to injury ITV one-size started pulling the plug on popular drama series whilst turning to cheap productions such as Britain's got talent - mindless stuff people sit at home and talk over having lost interest in ego displays. Poor old 'new special ITV' one programme for all - if you want better there’s always ITV4 .....
watlingfen Very well said. Today we have a whole host of channels churning out rubbish. I would rather have 3 or 4 channels making good quality programs, and with their regional identities. I never watch my tv anymore, and haven't done for many years but wee all still have to pay the license fee for the thing. Thanks to the BBC again for that.
Anglia started broadcasting in Suffolk on 27th October 1959
Tony Currie is right there was always a 15 minute gap before the start of programmes
You mis-spelt Anglia in the video name
They were for people and TV dealers to adjust their sets for the best picture quality.
"This is Anglia Television, broadcasting to the East of England on channels 6, 7 and 11 from the Sandy Heath, Belmont and Mendlesham transmitters of the Independent Television Authority".
But where’s the 'opening eye' sequence where A T V opened down the screen with Associated TeleVision Ltd wording below, it was a splendid sequence in the late 1950's the timing of the 'opening eye' was emphasised by Coates ' Dada Dada Dada' and the whole was very professionally done ... then Pat Ashley (usually) gave the introduction ....
Yeah, deffo that. The whole thing went: This is Pat Astley on behalf of ATV which provides your Monday to Friday programmes on Channel 8, available on the Midlands transmitter of the Independent Television Authority.
Please don't perpetuate the urban myth that ABC and Rediffusion merged to create Thames, both companies carried on as production companies after their parent companies created Thames, on the orders of the ITA.
It's not music that was ever played along with an ITA test card.
It sounds like incidental music from those Whose Line Is It Anyway or Monty Python spoofs of public information films!
What are you getting at? That would surely just mean it was easy to perform, rather than that it was of bad quality. Beats me...
The original start up sequence for ABC Television has never been shown. From 1955/6 when ITV started in the north a test card was shown followed by the original ABC triangle (the same as used in the cinemas) which radiated for until programmes started.
Well, the test card music's a piece of piss for a start.
This is great! Brings back some memories!
THE INTERNET IS NOT! REPEAT NOT ABC TV, IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO TV WHEN IT WAS PROPERLY PRODUCED. PLEASE QUIT TRYING TO PRETEND THE INTERNET IS TV BECAUSE THE INTERNET PALES IN COMPARISON, SHODDY? I THINK SO
WHY? PLEASE CAN YOUR SILLY ASS TELL ME WHY?
Beautiful piece of classical music.
Radio Searock, many thanks indeed. The Vaughan Williams 'Sea Songs' ending this clip actually ran into announcer Dick Graham impeccably enunciating, as I recall: "This is Anglia Television, broadcasting on channels 6, 7 and 11 from the Belmont, Sandy Heath and Mendlesham transmitters of the Independent Television Authority". Wasn't the Sandy Heath reference added later in an updated version? I still have the voiceover on MP3, I think, should you wish to 'gild the lily'!
@kifbowdensmith1 If my memory serves me correctly (I interned at Foley street in the summer of 1960) ATV London would end the startup with the 'elongated' ATV animation; it was a live telecine cue attempting to sync the animation with the music. Not sure whether this was also the case in the Midlands.
Could i have an mp3 of this please
"Perpetuum Mobile", by Mike Roberts. A pretty ropey string orchestra if I ever heard one!
Didn't the Penguin Cafe Orchestra also cover the tune?
@@barbarakirk1451 Completely different piece with the same name.
I've tried to post an interesting comment four times on here so this will have to be a test transmission! When it comes to posting the message 'Error try again' comes up in red text despite there being plenty of characters left in the message space and after re[peated attempts pressing the Post icon. Anyone else had difficulties? I'm getting too demoralised by this to tell the story all over again as the text has been lost each time.
Thames Television used the same start-up music from 1968 to the early 1980s.
Is this actually the original version? I noticed that the track you refer to which is on "TV and Radio Classics", (on iTunes), is performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as are the rest of the tracks on that album.
I have seen that transmitter, near Huddersfield isn't it?
