I Didn't Think This All The Way Through...
Today Kai recounts a hand he played where his mind was scattered. So many ideas were going through his head, and it came to nothing. This hand taught Kai how he needs to find the core concept of the hand and then stick to it. Switching plans throughout the hand just ain't gonna work. It also happens to be a really cool hand. With so many talking points! I hope you enjoy!

Today Kai pays homage to his wonderful partner! Isaac played this hand so well! He found a very technical line to optimize his chances of making the contract. Sadly, it didn't matter on the hand, but it certainly could have paid off. Today Kai recounts his most painful hand of trials. Kai's one regret of the tournament was being blind to the declarer playing tricks on this hand. It's a fairly advanced tactic. However, he needs knowledge of the exact shape to pull it off. Little did he know, but there was a clue on trick one! Should have overtaken DK with the Ace and forced out DQ. With HK as entry and Partner having stops in both Black suits the contract will go about 4 off as Declarer will have only 5 tricks before the defence gets in.

      @BridginWithKai 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good point! But sadly I had already played to the trick :(. I wish I led the DA!!!! Maybe I could have found that lead actually now that I think about it. But that's really bad if declarer has KQ 3rd. Both leads are bad if declarer has KQ 3rd.

    Really appreciating how clear and complete you are in explaining your line of play. It's like I'm a wee person on your shoulder listening to your thoughts. What is the choice at expert level of 4th best leads vs 3rd/5th?

    • @BridginWithKai
      @BridginWithKai 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yay! I'm glad. That's what I hope that these videos are!!! Regarding your question about 4th best vs. 3rd/5th. I'm sure that you will get many different answers and that both have their upsides and downsides. I suggest 4th best vs. NT and 3rd/5th or 3rd/low vs suits. With suit contracts the main priority is being able to tell your partner that you are not interested in a ruff, because you would lead high with a doubleton. Furthermore, when it comes to suit contracts count on the hand is crucial because your partner needs to know if the opponents are able to ruff. Leading 3rd and 5th offers a finer point. Whereas 4th best vs NT is being able to trying to find the suit with partner that you can set up. 4th best doesn't just tell you about the count it tells you about the quality of the shit because your partner must have 3 cards higher than the one led. By no means am I an expert in this type of theory, but that's how I rationalize it. Hope this helps.

      @BridginWithKai This makes super sense. Against NT 4th best leads lets me use rule of 11, less helpful in suit contracts.

      The reality is that sometimes we just don't have the right hand to bid as Overcaller. I should bid 2D here because most people play it as natural over a 1D bid that could have only 2D. DBL massively misconstrues my hand unfortunately. If partner bids C or S, I'm just stuck. Because if I bid diamonds over whatever he bids I show a hand stronger than I have regardless if he takes it as a power double (double and originate) or a cuebid. Both show like 18+HCP which I certainly do not have. Just a thought position. I should certainly bid 2D tho

    One of my funniest director calls was at a sectionals in Edmonton. The director (who a month or two prior was directing the spingolds) had to check his book for this one! auction went: 1!D*-(X)-P^-(P)-XX’’-(P)-P-(P)-1!H-(2C)-…. (6 more bids before I recovered from my shock and called the director - I was so thrown off when my p pulled 1!Dxx that I forgot that they couldn’t legally pull it!). Because there were 7 bids after the hand passed out, and before the director call, it was decided that everyone was at fault. All information was subsequently authorized, and the auction was rolled back to 1!Dxx which made exactly for a 100% board despite being a 6-card fit. *=15+, Art ^= 6-9 Art OR trap ‘’= GF Art. opposite 6-9 My pass was an unconventional trap pass, trapping my partner in a redoubled contract at the 1 level. The unusual and therefore unexpected condition of a trap into a redoubled instead of a doubled contract along with an alerted pass in the first round is probably what caused my partner and RHO to misread the position. I think LHO knew they were in pass-out and then had a similar reaction to me when the auction continued, leading to us both bidding. Everyone was confused when I called the director. So was the director (: he also read the auction and didn’t see the abnormality until I emphasized that it went pass pass *pass* 1!H. That trap pass, hoping for xx, might be one of my more brilliant bids of all time, but it’ll always be outshone by every bid after it (:

  • @kevinrosenberg4368
    @kevinrosenberg4368 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    so actually the presence of the C10 is enough for your defense to defeat the contract (109 not needed)... kinda. And honestly even the club 10 may not be needed. This hand is crazy complicated so the analysis below gets a little dense. I break it out into 3 possible shapes partner can have. 1. Let's say you play a spade and partner is 3316. Declarer wins and clears the spades.. Now partner with K10xxxx of clubs plays the CT anyway!. Declarer wins the Q and runs spades. But partner keeps all clubs, and also ducks when declarer leads the JC off dummy later. Down 1. But not so fast, there's several more levels. If declarer has 8xx of spades, they could counter this defense by leading a low spade towards their 8 after winning the AS. Now, at least double dummy, they can succeed by cashing their heart winners and later conceding a club to partner. Here's another line to consider even if declarer has xxx spades. What if they just let the SQ hold? Now if we cash the DA, declarer will surely have the rest after our next play. So we immediately play a heart. But then again they can cash their hearts and concede a club to partner Cashing the AD at trick 3 can never be better, since then when we play the QS declarer can always duck. So in conclusion, we actually have no chance if partner is 3316, if declarer can see through our cards. But your QS play is as good a try as any. 2. What if partner is 4315? A key difference is now when we play the SQ, it can't be ducked. Declarer can win and drive spades, but partner can throw dummy back in with a spade. Here, even if declarer has the CT, they are down as long as partner keeps all 5 of their clubs on the run of the spades, and then ducks the Q and J of clubs (note if they pitch even 1 club, they can be thrown in with the CK and forced to concede a heart at trick 13). On this layout, we can potentially make it even easier for partner by cashing the AD before playing the SQ, since again, declarer can't afford to duck. If declarer wins the SQ and plays clubs from the top, partner will have to duck them if declarer began with xx AQJ10 Qxx 10xxx. And if partner made the mistake of pitching a club on the DA, the contract will be cold. So probably better to avoid this play and just play the SQ directly 3. Lastly when partner is 3415, yes, only a heart will work. Though again, you only need partner to have KTxxx to be able to safely exit the CT in the main line you looked at. One difference here though is that declarer can't duck the SQ and easily make like when partner only had 3 hearts. If the spade queen is ducked, now you are forced to play a heart, and now the position gets really funky. Declarer pitches a diamond from dummy, and wins the heart. They can't afford to cash another heart, so they run spades. Dummy and Partner come down to 4 clubs. Declarer comes down to 3 clubs and a heart winner. As long as declarer has the C9, they can succeed (lead the CQ from dummy, can always endplay partner somehow). So this is actually the one position where partner does need KT9 of clubs (or you could just play a heart at trick 3 and always beat it). Summary: - If partner is 3316, nothing works, probably your spade play is best practical chance - If partner is 4315 both a spade and AD work, but a spade is probably simpler. A heart fails. - If partner is 3415, a heart works always. A spade works if declarer wins it and partner has the T of clubs. If declarer ducks the spade, then partner needs T9 of clubs. All in all, looks like you made the best play at the table

      Oh my goodness Kevin! What an outstanding deeper deep dive. Thank you for taking the time to write all of this out. I Didn't consider that they could just duck the SQ in the case that declarer has 3, although I never considered that declarer could have 3, which maybe I should. I also didn't consider that if they truly were endplayed in the dummy, I can cash my DA before endplaying them because they have no way back to their hand to cash the DQ. It just goes to show that I still have a long way to go in my Bridge thinking and I am excited to work on the climb to get there. But in the end, I am glad to hear that I made the best play!

      @@BridginWithKai At the table I think it's sensible to place declarer with 2434, since not everyone would bid 3N with 3 spades, especially with no obvious club or diamond stopper (though I think it was an interesting/reasonable shot with their actual hand)

    Leading twice towards the spades does the same. 5D by EW needs them to guess the trump layout as they always have a H and S loser. I would have doubled 3D. Axxx of spades by partner would give a play for game. I'd also play the diamond before any 2nd trump. Let them help with the strip endplay

    great lesson. And yes, East should have been able to figure out to underlead their ace. The logic is there that partner must have CK both on HCP and declarer's line of play But West could make partner's life easier by hopping KC, cashing diamond, and playing another club.

    Ah, the card game. Don't know why this was recommended. I've never played it. I thought it was a self-defense video of some sort - not that I've ever gone after someone with a club, of course. But thought that I should watch it in case I needed to someday.

      Oh my what a surprise this must have been for you. We do no such things on this channel however I can teach you how to protect yourself from a club attack in Bridge... Unfortunately I am not the type to know how to defend myself. If somebody came at me with a club, my solution would be to run as fast as I can. Which isn't very fast, because I sit around playing bridge all day...

      It wasn't an actual rule. It's just an inside joke that we had. Passing out a hand is lame and they just wanted to give me a hard time despite it being a reasonable action.

    Ooohhh.. interesting that you hate 4441 the most.... I've seen expert opinion that 5431 is worth an extra point. :o And I can't groan hard enough with a 4333... 4441 seems to have more options

    • @isaacstone3934
      @isaacstone3934 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      4441 isn’t as bad as 4333 offensively but it’s much much worse defensively. in other words it struggles on passive lines, so it’s fine if you have slam, but otherwise not great. 5431 is extremely common and tends to play well but it really just depends on how your hand fits with your partners. The 5 card suit may be a running suit. The 4-card suit may be trump. The singleton avoids losers, and hopefully the 3 card suit is either your partners singleton/dbltn or your partners 5-card suit and helps set them up

    • @BridginWithKai
      @BridginWithKai 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      At least with 4333 you know where you are going. 4441 is deceptively annoying imo because the Singleton seems helpful but put it against a 4333 or a 5332 and just ew.

    Huh, clever: not sure I'd see the diamond exit as being key to setting the contract. I'm also trying to get better at using the rule of 11 to figure out how to defend against NT contracts: what might partner have, what might declarer have, and can I use that information to figure out how to do some damage as a defender? Not sure I'd see the 9 as being the key card... Thanks for sharing that hand and analysis!

    Interesting question for educational purposes: Why do you have to play a diamond right away? Why can't you play the KS?

    • @BridginWithKai
      @BridginWithKai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Playing the KS allows them to win the ace of spades and then finesse the heart with entries to both hearts and diamonds. When we in the HQ we can cash the SQ and the CK but that would only hold them to just making.

    • @BridginWithKai
      @BridginWithKai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hold on I counted wrong. But don't I get triple double squeezed when declarer runs diamonds? I have to pitch 2 things if I pitch a club I have no entry to partners king, if I pitch a heart the diamonds run, if I pitch 2 spades the declarer can play a low space and knock out my remaining SQ tight and endplay me into playing a heart of a club giving them the last trick that they need.

    • @BridginWithKai
      @BridginWithKai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just triple squeezed not double squeezed. Dunno if there is better terminology

    • @kevinrosenberg4368
      @kevinrosenberg4368 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BridginWithKai Not quite. If they win the AS and run diamonds, you pitch 2 spades. Your last 5 cards are 1 spade, 3 hearts, and a club. Dummy presumably has 3 hearts and 2 clubs. Partner keeps 2 clubs and 3 hearts. When declarer plays a spade, partner pitches a heart. Now dummy has to pitch. If they pitch a club, you can just cash 2 clubs. So dummy has to pitch a heart, and now you can simply throw dummy in with a heart and they still have to give partner the last 2 clubs.

    • @BridginWithKai
      @BridginWithKai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      AHH! Dummy is squeezed before South!!! Well then the declarer has to duck first then we are truly triple-squeezed. KS Duck. We exit a diamond declarer cashes all the diamonds and we are forced to pitch a spade and a club. Declarer can now safely pitch clubs and play AS and another spade endplaying us into playing hearts away from our Queen. It isn't an impossible line either if declarer decides to play us for the HQ
