Allotment December 2024 Update – Winter Digging Started | Garlic Growing
What has been going on since your last visit and what is growing at the moment?
The wind and snow has broken the Fruit Cage so that will need to be fixed over the winter.
The winter digging has started. This is one job a lot of people don’t like. But I enjoy doing it, as long as the ground is not waterlogged.
I still have leeks growing.
The garlic has been planted and has started to grow. However the Broad Beans I have sown, have not appeared yet.

UK End to End Walking Challenge | Completion Rules | A Multi-Trip Challenge

There’s so many great long distance footpaths in the UK, it’s hard to decide on which one to walk next. So I decided to challenge myself to walk from John o’ Groats to Land’s End. I don’t have two or three months to walk the entire route in one go, so I will have to walk it in multiple trips. I felt this Walking Challenge need some rules, so I’ve created six based on the Rules for Entry into th...

Digging? How quaint. Oh dear, I seem to have stumbled on a video of how not to do it.
Sorry, if you were mislead by the title/thumbnail, I've updated them now, atb Simon
Very nice video. I went to Plymouth once 35 years ago. Nice to see it again. I have liked and subbed. See you again.
@tubbatravels thanks and thanks for subscribing, atb Simon
Definitely need to add this path to my list. I loved the Worcestershire Way and i think i will enjoy this one too
@SpanielStrolls Hi there, not walked on the Worcestershire Way, so I can't really compare the two ☹️. Hopefully the North Worcestershire Path lives up to your expectations. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
Lovely video. I watched this as I'm thinking of walking this in small stages with my Wife soon. Great video, all the best, Webby 👍
Glad you liked the video. If you do this walk a GPX route file for this walk is available on Outdooractive - Winchcombe Wanderer. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
@WinchcombeWanderer Thank you, Simon. I have already mapped the route out on google Maps, we will probably do 5 short walks.
@@WebbysWalks no problem. Enjoy your walks.
Love the views from Cleeve Hill
Me too. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
Thinking of doing this next year can you name campsites you used asi only want to use sites.
Hi there, the campsites I stayed at are detailed in the video's description. I can't recommend the Monyash campsite I stayed in. The route does go through Knotlow Farm Campsite (just north of Monyash) which looked nice. I hope this helps, atb Simon
Nice one Simon, I liked the interesting observations about the trail especially the story about the crooked church spire and the bride. 🍺🍺
Thanks Snowy. Yes, the story about the bride is more interesting than it was built crooked in the 1400s. Even when it was rebuilt in 1856, the people of the parish insisted it be built crooked, atb Simon
I love Wembury, but I wouldn't have fancied the climb up out of the village, some lovely country in the South Hams.
Yes, it is a nice area, even in late October, atb Simon
Nice walk through the city lot's of history and places to visit 👍🍻
Yes, it's an interesting place to visit. Everytime I go, I find something new, atb Simon
It's tempting but I've never got around to it. The best I could do last year was to sit in my armchair and follow 'Ellie Hikes' with her little dog Otto walk from Dunnet Head to Lizard Point, This was my breakfast treat as I munch my muesli.
Hi Reg, I guess it's not something everyone fancies doing. Thanks for watching and commenting, atb Simon
Thanks for posting. Nice scenery.
No problem Mark. Yes it is a nicew part of the UK, atb Simon
How much have you done Simon ohh and yes my route is from Cape Wrath not John I groats as I’ve done that bit years ago 👍
I've completed 720 miles so far (Aug 1985 to Sept 2024). All in England atm but planning at least one trip to Scotland next year.
@@WinchcombeWanderer thanks for that Simon.
@@WinchcombeWanderer thanks for that Simon.
No problem Dave. The list of Long Distance Paths completed is in the 'UK End-to-End Walk' Playlist, atb Simon
Well I missed this one Simon, so I wish you all the best . I too have a little ambition to complete it too so bar a little bit between Glasgow and Edinburgh and a couple of days here and there I have got as far as Stow on the wolds. I’ve gone a bit flat on inspiration at the moment but I’m sure that will re ignite at some point. 🙏👍🍻😊
Hi Dave, you are doing well and well over half way. I'm going to use the Forth & Clyde / Union Canal Towpath between Glasgow & Edinburgh. Good luck with the rest of the challenge, atb Simon
Thanks for sharing this, a walk I have never done. Excellent filming and I liked your commentary. I will do it in reverse too. Does the walk in reverse start straight from the car park?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, it starts from the car park, drop down into the lane behind where you have parked. Turn right and walk along the lane. The GPX of this walk is available from Outdooractive using this link, out.ac/INSdHv Enjoy the walk, atb Simon
@@WinchcombeWanderer Brilliant, thank you very much!!!! I look forwrad to doing it.
No problem, atb Simon
What a marvellous video. I did part of this walk last Friday, possibly the last warm day of 2024, but only from Hagley as far as Rubery. I agree that the section from Walton Hill to Calcot Hill has lovely views. Hagley and Rubery are well served by public transport.
Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it. Are you going to walk any more of the Path?
@@WinchcombeWanderer Hope so :) Thanks again for the video.
@philbrown2202 No problem. Hopefully it's not to muddy at the eastern end of the Path for you, atb Simon
much more pleasant in reverse, nice pint at the pub too
Walking up the Dragons Back sure looked a lot harder than the way I went up. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
@@WinchcombeWanderer that was our thinking too, far more sensible way around
As I'm going back again to do some more walking in the Black Mountains, I might end up walking up the Dragons Back!
@@WinchcombeWanderer that first haul up from Dinas castle certainly will raise the heart rate lol
sure will

Yes, most of upland UK is treeless now, atb Simon
In 1983 I took part in the RAF Strike Command Cambrian Expedition. Two days canoeing down the River Wye to Hereford and two days hiking along the Black Mountains with a camp in the middle. Unfortunately it was misty in the mountains so didn't see the views you had.
Sounds hard work! atb Simon
It was good fun (apart from the blisters on my feet due to boots not being broken in enough).
The gear then was not as good or as light as it is now
My Grandmother on my mom's side had family from Wales that moved to the USA .
Have you been to Wales to see where they lived?
Such an ambitious endeavour. We we'll be happy to follow you on your path!
@simonjanssen5326 Hi there, an endeavour I'm looking forward to. I've never walked in Scotland before, so I'm really looking forward to those Long Distance Paths. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
sounds great!! Ive just joined the LDWA , basically want to gewt into fastpacking so i can do trails faster, witht the thoughts of doing all the trails etc
@WanderingJay Hi there Jay, "... all the trails", I thought my challenge was ambitious! The LDWA is a great resource, for finding and planning the next walking trip. I hope you're keeping well, atb Simon
Sounds like a plan Simon. LEJOG in one go has never really interested me but I have walked the whole of the SWCP including Land's End and have walked two routes across Wales south to north. I've also done the Pennine Way Southern Upland Way, West Highland way, Great Glen and this September I'm hopefully walking from Glasgow or Ft William to John o' Groats so I would need only a few small connection routes to string it all together! Good luck on your challenge, mate 👍🍺😎
@snowymatrix thanks Snowy. There are some great paths that you could join up what you have walked already, if you want to. Your Scotland trip sounds interesting, I was planning on doing the WHW at the beginning of this year but the weather was so bad I didn't go ☹️, walked the North Worcestershire Path instead. Enjoy Scotland, atb Simon
Good luck will look forward to following your journey
@SharonNottle-od1ix Thanks Sharon, there are some great paths to walk, atb Simon
Good luck WW
@ScreaminLG Thanks Luke, atb Simon
Have you visited the Mach Loop?
No I've been. Is it good?
👍
Sure was a nice relaxing visit, atb Simon
Very interesting Simon Cheers 👍
Thanks Dave. How's the garden you're looking after going?
@@WinchcombeWanderer I’m getting there, probably about 15 percent left untouched, it’s certainly looking tidy now and they are very pleased. Been doing a bit of painting for them too, just do about 4 days a month. I’ve not done any planting yet just living with what’s there. I grew a row of beans. 👍🙏 👍
@@DaveGoodman1959 That's good news, I'm glad it's going well. The legumes seem to be producing the most this year, atb Simon
I walked in the Black Mountains a couple of times back in the seventies. It was beautiful and never saw a soul on either walk💖
It sure is a beautiful area and I'm planning on going back again. Probably pick a day in the week like I did for this walk. Thanks for watching and commenting, atb Simon
Nice walk up - conditions were pretty good for you. Ha, surprising considering what the summer's been like. What is that path? Looks worse than the path cut by people. I was up there some years ago with my dear twin and had only bog on top. I preferred the wild nature of the mountain then. Bit all good with the views. All the best. Mark
Hi there Mark, I did manage to pick a good day. I guess there is more traffic on the path than when you and I last walked in that area, it is also part of the Cambrian Way now! atb Simon
@@WinchcombeWanderer Hey, great to see you on a good day. Yeah, it is busier. But still them paths are as much a scar as the worn ones.
They sure are
I did the Dragon hike in 1968 as a 13 year old solo. Sad to see the paved trail. I also did the Fan Dance which is sad to see commercialised.
That part of the route is on the Cambrian Way, so I guess it gets alot of traffic. Sad but it will cut down the erosion of the ridge. Hopefully the video brought back some happy memories, thanks for watching and commenting, atb Simon
Beautiful view
They sure are, atb Simon
I did this walk a couple of weeks ago the other way round, its good to see the views from the opposite direction
Hi Steve, the walk down the ridge sure did give wonderful views of the rest of the Brecon Beacons. It's always good to stop and look back from where you have come from. Thanks for subscribing and commenting, atb Simon
Staffordshire, lovely part of the country👍
Nice little villages and countryside. I'm looking forward to exploring the county again! Thanks for watching and commenting, atb Simon
Great video Simon, it looks an enjoyable walk. How did you find the final section, as I've seen comments previously that say the final section is not paricularly interesting? ATB Simon
Hi Simon, yes it was an enjoyable trip. I guess once you have passed the A52/Mayfield area, it is easy walking in pasture land until the end of the Way. Which many may not find interesting but I did like the walk down into Ellastone and the walk along the River Dove. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
Beautiful scenery!
Sure is. Thanks for watching, atb Simon
Hi Simon thanks for sharing your adventure I did enjoy it a bit of reminiscing for me as I’ve covered that route in one go and part of other walks many times. You could have carried on for home I’m sure😊. You did well for camp sites Somthing I should start doing instead of just keep on walking. Anyway ATB and kind regards. 🙏👍🍻
Hi Dave, it is nice walking in the White Peak. After I finished, I did walk another 17 miles to Rugeley on the Staffordshire Way. I used campsites as I only feel happy to do Leave-No-Trace camping on Dartmoor or in more remote places. Have a good week, atb Simon
Thanks for this, looks nice. Were you able to camp at the Bulls Head at Monyash okay? Just wondering for future planning. Thanks in Advance Phill.
Yes, it was an enjoyable walk. One to add to a wish list for sure. I arrived at the Bulls Head on Monday, I knew they didn't do food on Monday's but they are also closed 😲. I would suggest you ring them about camping if you want to stay there. I can't recommend the campsite I stayed in but the route does go through Knotlow Farm Campsite (just north of Monyash) which looked nice. I hope this helps, atb Simon

God, id love to do this walk but as a woman, i dont think i could feel safe walking all the way through that tunnel alone. Shame.
yes it is a shame that you feel you could not do it alone. Is there someone you could walk the tunnel part or all of the Way with? Or I'm sure you could find an overground route bypassing the tunnel. Hopefully you get to do this walk someday, atb Simon
