Stravinsky is a greater composer than Mozart, Beethoven or Bach as the excerpt in this video amply illustrates. He just exhibits a far greater level of sophistication and mastery in his orchestral writing, and his propulsive use of rhythm is sui generis.
Thanks for uploading!
Magnificent!
Do you know how many times Mr Copland has heard his composition..but it’s the great Leonard Bernstein conducting so one more time won’t hurt..great music..
There were giants then….

This rocks hard 🎶🤘🎤
Two of my musical heroes. What joy to hear an American sound from the NYP . Copeland brings me peace, Lenny joy. Thanks for posting this.
Stravinsky shows how, without mastering the conducting technique, one can force the orchestra to carry out exactly his plan. One hand would be enough here, because the right hand simply mirrors the left (or vice versa :))
What a treasure! This, and the live performance in Albert Hall with the London Phil superbly conducted by Meredith Davies; Britten himself conducted the chamber orchestra. That spectacular, complete performance from 1964 is also here on YT. Any fan of this masterpiece will want to watch that performance.
6:18 Incredible
LOL! In the very beginning he is more drawing than composing! :) :) :)

Leontyne, the greatest.
In the last years of Rodgers' life, he spoke very hoarsely because he'd had surgery to remove his larynx(voicebox) on account of cancer. (He died in 1979.)
Stravinsky changed my life
If I may paraphrase a comment made by one composer about another composer, "Aaron Copland has no place in American music because he is American music." Try to imagine the American landscape, its people, its history without Copland's music. It would be impossible to do so.
Là on peux dire que c est la version la plus fidèle à son créateur puique c est lui qui la dirige. Merveilleux Firebird, grandiose Mr Stravinsky , merci pour ce cadeau .❤
Does anyone know what that little staff paper swiper is that he uses at the start? Definitely need it lol
As much as he struggled to explain himself, it's impossible. Listening is the only way.
Thanks for uploading this gem!
Controlled musical chaos. Such a pleasure to know this lives on at this site. Much obliged.
Yee Hah!
CBS REPORTS!
Stravinsky was 78 years old in 1960 but knew no age.
Most definitely the best version ever of this masterpiece. Love it!
He kissed me at the airport as he was able ready to board a airflight taking him back to Copland House or as he calls it his Hideaway. I do have documentation of this extraordinary experience. Just in case some of you come from Missouri, The SHOW ME STATE 🎉. Why? Because I was his hostess at Jefferson City University, Jefferson City, Missouri! Again, how lucky can you get than being in the presence of Greatness for three days!! However, to quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that!"😊
I was Aaron's hostess in April, 1979. We discussed this composition as well as other of Copland's compositions. He always referred to me as Young Lady, but I didn't care what he called me because what an honor to be one of a handful of people left alive that knew him as I did and was also in the audience when he narrated his own composition LINCOLN PORTRAIT. We actually had a good time. He very quietly asked me " May I?" And to my surprise he gently kissed my left cheek! I am currently working on a project entitled MY COPLAND EXPERIENCE. It will be offered to my Alma Mater, Wichita State University. Farewell from the Heartland!! And remember: Great minds talk about philosophy and ideas. Small minds talk about people! Be well!!!
Influenced Zappa so many other artists musicians in RR, Jazz, in America.
I would LOVE to have that paper he is composing on..... I wonder what piece it is?
Also that little thing that he swipes to write measures. I would genuinely buy that in a heartbeat
It’s like the Stravinsky Octet stumbles into the Cotton Club.
The theme for the United States of America. What is more American than Hoedown?
This was perfectly imperfect, beautifully in keeping with the character realization. Love
Bravo🎉
✨️Thank you.
Awesome!
It’s a shame that American culture has gotten so derailed, I don’t think we’ll ever get back on track at this point
When you hear the full orchestral version , you realize that ELPs 3 piece modern version was pretty damn good!
Such a great opera - superlative orchestration.
Where can I get the full video?
Wow👌
You know, what gets me about music is that without its performance it is never heard except in the composer's head and heart. It must be an ABSOLUTE THRILL to conduct an orchestra playing your own composition. Wow. It must be one of the great peak experiences of life.
Damn Lenny plays this thing fast as hell!!
100% pure American music written by a true legend.
Beautiful
Boothill's VA playing this in the background... Help... 😭
Leonard Bernstein doing the how sexy hair back stroke thing is hot.
What a gift. So grateful to be singing the War Requiem for a second time. Like wine it only gets better with age.
Amazing performance. Ready to do this with Yale YSO and Glee Club and Camerata April 3 at Woolsey Auditorium under the baton of Jeffrey Douma.
What a piece of crap that Avery Fisher Hall is. Worst acoustics, cheap construction, ugly design.... please tear it down.
I haven't been there since the renovation and by the way it's now called David Geffen Hall. The reviews seem to agree that the acoustics are better now, some claiming considerably, which is good but it will probably never be a Symphony Hall or Musikverein. But it's not going to be torn down....they just spend 600 million on it.
@@johnrandolph6121 Thanks. I haven't been there since the newest renovation but I recall past attempts at improving the space had the same reactions, that it was much better acoustically -- it just wasn't. I'll reserve judgement till I go there and hear for myself.
