    Thanks for the clear explanation on removal/re-install with these thru axles. First time I worked on one of these and your fine point details finally got the job done after struggling for well over an hour just trying to get the wheel off. For the normal recreational rider, my opinion on this is these thru axles are way to complicated for the few times one would have to remove the wheels and then re-install them. But, thanks again for the excellent video and help.

    Electricity can be used to dampen harmonics in materials like aluminum or steel, primarily through techniques involving electromagnetic forces. The approach generally works by counteracting or dissipating vibrational energy in the material. Here are a few methods where electrical harmonics/frequencies could play a role: Active Vibration Control: This approach uses sensors to detect vibrations and actuators to apply counteracting forces. Electromagnetic actuators can be used to apply forces directly to the vibrating material. By applying opposing forces in real-time, the harmonics can be significantly reduced. This method can be applied to various materials, including aluminum and steel, especially in applications like aerospace and automotive structures. Eddy Current Damping: When a conductive material, like aluminum or steel, vibrates within a magnetic field, it induces currents known as eddy currents. These currents, in turn, create magnetic fields that oppose the original motion, creating a damping effect. This approach is commonly used to dampen vibrations in rotating machinery, where magnet arrays or electromagnetic coils are placed near moving metallic parts. Piezoelectric Actuators: Though not directly using electrical currents in the metal itself, piezoelectric materials can convert electrical signals into mechanical movement, applying forces that counteract the vibrations in a material like aluminum or steel. When carefully controlled, piezoelectric actuators can be driven with an electrical signal to target and reduce specific vibrational modes in a structure. Each of these methods leverages electricity to influence the physical properties of the material or the environment around it, thereby reducing harmonics and damping vibrations. Maybe a material lining the wheel rims, the internal frame tube or fork stanchions, bars, etc. The choice of method would depend on the specific application, such as frequency of the harmonics, size of the structure, and the material's conductivity. Beats adding a bandaid of a mass (a blob of WEIGHT) to an already heavy bike. Even better, convert the vibrations in the bike system harmonics back into electrical energy. A win/win.

    • @TheMarkList
      @TheMarkList หลายเดือนก่อน

      i had a k2 snowboard back in the day with pezio electronic dampeners that converted vibrations into electric current. the board had little lights that would light up when riding. So many applications and possibilities. this damper had some of the most visible and noticeable ride quality differences than any product i've used. it's pretty wild. I'm going to be putting another one on the rear part of the front triangle.

    • @xolomartinez6036
      @xolomartinez6036 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheMarkList That's so cool! BTW, According to ChatGPT, Electric mountain bikes and high-performance road bikes are exploring active suspension systems, where piezoelectric materials could adapt to trail or road conditions in real-time. Couldn't find much actually being done other than Fox patenting a mass damper. I can imagine something Piezoelectric going into the rims since that's probably where the majority of the nasty harmonics are generated. Maybe within the shock's systems as well but I would expect this is fairly well dampened already. Bars are another good candidate. Well, time to look into it and see what can be done. We don't need anyone's permission to try this out, do we!?

Finger-Tight and Then Partial Turns Tighten the thru-axle finger-tight (as tight as you can comfortably turn with just your fingers). Then, apply 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn more using a wrench. This usually brings you in the range close to 20-25 Nm for a rear thru-axle. Go very slowly and check the tightness frequently." Thank you for your time and support! Cheers from Budapest, Hungary

      rimpact is making one that you put inside the steerer tube. The way TMDs are implemented is that they are tuned for frequencies that are outside the envelope of normal dampers i.e. 10-25hz which includes frame pings, brake bumps, super fast square edges and undamped tire "jounce"(tire jounce is more of a problem for motorcycles and these are considered as mandatory safety device in some motogp competition). pedal bob is too slow for TMDs to cancel out of phase.

    • @TheMarkList
      @TheMarkList หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SneakyB I've seen the rimpact one and it's kind of small I imagine it's not heavy enough for bigger hits and downhill or descending super rough and Technical Terrain. These don't work on smooth flowy runs they're really just meant for super hard edges hard hits and the harder the hits the more effective the damper is. The one I'm testing is approx 525grams and the affects are amazing. Was testing on a double black diamond run at Mammoth Mountain Bike Park called Follow Me., I'm going to be adding a second one to my seat tube just inside the rear triangle for more benefits to the rear etc.

    • @SneakyB
      @SneakyB หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheMarkList it's not necessarily the size of the suspended weight but it's the density of the material, where in rimpact's case they're using tungsten which is 19g/cm3 vs steel which is 8g/cm3. hopefully you can persuade countershox to make a mount for the seat tube. maybe even integrate as a seat collar would be really nice.

      Thanks! Also, next time you talk to the guys there, you may want to see if they can design the unit to fit into the bottom of the fork steerer tube perhaps? There’s a lot of dead space in there and that would be directly in the path of the vibrations moving upward, which might (or might not?) improve the overall feeling? Similar to how a mass damper in a skyscraper is situated in the middle of the building etc. I have an Orbea with the proprietary stem and spacers unique to Orbea so using this mount regrettable won’t work for me unless I swap out everything to a standard stem etc but if it could slide into the bottom of the fork steerer, oh man, golden. Absolutely universal then for tapered forks !

      @@anthonynazzal1958 I know rimpact is doing that currently, but it looks small and maybe not enough force or the right frequency for downhill or super rough terrain. When I raced XC in Alaska during the 90s, some of our longer races were essentially gravel races on dirt roads; but I would never want to ride a gravel bike on them because of the washboard. That stuff is BRUTAL! You can be cruising along at 16-18 mph and his that stuff and suddenly you’re just trying to slog through it at 4 mph. Something about the frequency just slows the bike down massively and quickly. The actual size of the bumps isn’t really as issue and shouldn’t slow a bike down at all; but when it’s a series of them, it’s like riding in quicksand. I really have to wonder if one of these tuned mass dampers might make a difference for that kind of washboard and might make riding an actual gravel bike on Alaska gravel roads feasible. Barring that, I would rather be on an XC bike with drop bars for those roads.

    • @TheMarkList
      @TheMarkList 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@keirfarnum6811 I would say yes.. Especially if the frequency of the damper is tuned correctly. The guy at CounterCycle spoke specifically about what you brought up. Washboard situations where the bike is bouncing so much that you're kinda floating up on the peaks of the washboard... That shouldn't be happening and the tuned damper eliminates it.. I've been riding faster and faster on a local double black and my PR has changed almost every time down it...
