#27 Village House in Björna, Sweden: Snow, Renovating Upstairs, and a Special Visit!
Welcome to another exciting week at our country home! Winter has arrived in Sweden, and with it comes plenty of work. In today’s video, I clear the driveway and remove snow from the house walls to protect our home from winter’s moisture.
But that’s just the beginning! Upstairs, we’re starting a new project: transforming the old kitchen into a cozy kids’ room. We’re removing the cabinet with the sink, while the rest of the space will be repurposed - a big step forward for our home! Today, I’m only showing the beginning of this exciting project. Stay tuned for more in the next video!
In the bathroom, I’ve been working hard: filling the walls multiple times to achieve a perfect finish. Soon, I’ll start sanding to prepare everything for waterproof sealing. Progress is happening, even if it’s taking longer than expected.
A special highlight this week: My mom is visiting from Germany! We’re enjoying our time together and experiencing the Swedish winter in all its beauty.
And, of course, there’s more to come next week. Stay tuned to see how the journey unfolds!
Let us know in the comments what you think of our progress and how you experience winter. We’re excited to hear your thoughts! ❄️✨

Is it wise to pile up the snow against the house? When it starts melting, that part of the wall will stay wet for weeks...
Thanks for the hint! You're right, I’ll clear the snow this week. I’ve also avoided pushing it all the way to the wall, as you can see at 07:09
Hello again, I think like you I'd want to keep the pathways and drive clear so that I can get in and out if needed. You are making progress but it looks like the snow is keeping you busy. I like your idea about closing the stairs because of your younger children. I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and New year's, full of love and laughter, family and friends. Merry Christmas 🎄❤️
Thank you so much! Keeping the pathways clear is definitely important with all this snow. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas and New Year filled with love and joy! 🎄❤
You’re a hard worker like my husband. He remodeled homes for us over the years. We’re in our 70’s now and I love to watch people in other places living their lives! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Your husband sounds like an amazing person, and it must be wonderful to look back on all those homes he remodeled for you over the years. I'm glad you enjoy watching our journey-it's always inspiring to connect with people from different places! Wishing you both a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with joy and good health! 🎄✨
I wish you and you family a merry christmas!
Thank you so much! We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas as well! 🎄✨
Such a sweet little face ❤
Thank you! ❤
Stomach full, eyed closed lol.😌😂
In the UK I've seen them paper new walls before painting as well for a smoother finish. 🤔
Yes, textured wallpaper like Raufasertapete is still very popular in Germany! It hides imperfections really well, and with a coat of paint, you get a great result quickly and easily. I'm not a fan of it; I prefer plastered walls instead.
It's always the little jobs that take up the time, but can make a huge difference.
Absolutely! It's amazing how those little tasks can transform a space and make such a difference.
Luckily using wallpaper isn't very common in South Africa. I've never bought a property with it.
You're lucky! Removing wallpaper can be a real hassle. In Sweden, it's everywhere-but it does add some charm!
14:44 gut gemacht Lio!!😍 15:12 super Luke!! Tolle Arbeit 😍 16:33 und Papa natürlich auch!! Respekt!!
The room is not recognisable after the paint, luckily it covered the dark blue really well. Hope you have a great Sunday and a productive week ahead. Greetings from Cape Town.❤️
Thank you so much! Wishing you a great Sunday and a productive week as well-greetings from Sweden!
It's really great seeing your boys being involved with the chores, Lio looks like he was in the thick of it as usual, he really looks like he wants to do it all lol. Great job from both of them. 😂👍
Thank you! Lio really is unstoppable when he gets involved-he loves taking charge and helping out. It's always a joy to see the boys working together.
It's a big decision deciding on an exterior colour, it's unusual that it isn't already the default traditional red lol. I think it's a very personal choice and I look forward to seeing what you do decide on. 👍
You're absolutely right, choosing the exterior colour is such a big decision. Stay tuned-we're excited to share what we decide!
Luke is very neat stacker! Good job Luke!
Thank you! Luke takes his stacking very seriously and he’s quite proud of his work, and so are we!
We homeschooled our kids in the USA and we remodeled an old farmhouse. We worked and they sledded and helped us too!
That sounds amazing! Homeschooling and remodeling an old farmhouse must have been such a rewarding experience. It’s so special when the kids can be part of it-helping out and making memories along the way!
Maybe the red color that is on a lot of the houses.
Yes, the traditional red is so iconic here in Sweden-it’s called ‘Falun Red’ and has been used for centuries to protect houses from the harsh weather. It gives the homes such a warm and inviting charm!
Nice that the children helps out with the Wood!
Yes, they love being part of it and learning along the way!
The dishwasher is a great Xmas present for you and your wife, four children in the house, loads of washing up.👍
Absolutely! 🎄 Now we just need to sort out the proper connection, and we’re all set! Thanks for the kind words! 👍
I haven't had the chance to drive in those conditions but I've lived on a 2km stretch of dirt road since 1987, so I know how easy it is to lose traction in the wet conditions. 👍
Snow and ice can be tricky, but it sounds like your years on a dirt road have given you plenty of practice handling tough conditions. 👍 Stay safe! 🚗❄
Oh boy, the little one is at that stage of ' I think I can get at it' lol, look at the excitement on that face. Love it 😅❤️
Haha, so true! 😂 The little one is at that unstoppable explorer stage-everything is an adventure! Thanks for the love! 🥰
So beautiful 😊😊 hello guys my name is Yuni from Indonesian enjoy with you video 😊😊
Thank you so much, Yuni! 😊😊 We're so happy to have viewers like you from Indonesia! Glad you enjoyed the video. Greetings from Sweden! 🇸🇪
you started vlogging and didnt tell
Oops, you caught me! 😅 Yes, I started vlogging to share our renovation journey. What do you think so far? I'd love your feedback!
Busy as usual and moving forward with renovation.
Thank you! 😊 It's slow but steady progress - every small step brings us closer to the goal!
Call it an adventure for sure! What a great bonding experience for the whole family.
Thank you! Yes, it truly is an adventure and such a great way for us to bond as a family. Every challenge brings us even closer together. 😊
Wow that's incredible, what a journey. The cold is a totally new experience for the kids but it looks like they are already enjoying the snow. I'm so glad that you have decided to share your content and have loved watching every time. 👍❤️
Thank you! From the heat to the cold - it doesn’t bother the kids at all. They love the snow and are having so much fun. Great to have you with us! 😊
It’s a great house for your family and a nice town and parks…
Thank you! Yes, we really feel at home here, and everything we need is close by. Only the nearest hardware store is 30 minutes away. 😊
The garage looks terrific. How nice your mother will be able to spend the next few months in the apartment close by. Lovely to see the children enjoying themselves. Looking forward to your next adventures.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you like the garage. Yes, it’s really wonderful that my mother will be able to spend the next few months in the nearby apartment-it makes everything so much easier for everyone. 😊 The kids are also really excited to have their grandma so close. Thanks for your lovely comment, and I look forward to sharing our next adventures with you!
Is this going to be your first Xmas there? Thunder and lightning rolling in here in Cape Town, no rain and not cold though. Have a great week ahead and look forward to seeing your next video. 👍❤️
Yes, this will be our first Christmas here, and we’re really excited to see what it’s like-especially with snow, as there’s pretty much a snow guarantee here! That’s one of the reasons we wanted to live so far north in Sweden. 😊 Thunder and lightning sound exciting, but I bet some rain would be welcome too. Thank you so much for your kind words, and have a great week ahead! ❤️
It looks like you are the only one brave enough to be outside, the houses around you look deserted lol.
Haha, yes, that’s true-it really does feel like we’re the only ones outside sometimes! And that’s despite having so many direct neighbors. It’s not just here-when we go to the playground, we’re often the only ones there too. 😅 But we kind of enjoy the peace and having all the space to ourselves. It feels like our own little world. Thanks for your comment! 😊
Great find with the apartment, really convenient for everyone. You are fighting a losing battle with the clutter while you are renovating lol, it will be a constant thing to keep on top of. It looks like Lio only climbed to the second step on the ladder, I could almost see his mind working when he took the first step.🤔🤭👍❤️
Thank you! Yes, the apartment is a great find and really makes things easier for us. And you’re absolutely right, the clutter is a constant challenge during the renovations-but one step at a time, just like Lio on the ladder. 😊 It’s so exciting to see how curious he is as he explores the world. Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
My heart almost stopped when I realised it was Lio who was going to fall, but seriously with such a spirited personality it was going to be him. Most people would be saying that he shouldn't have been left to climb the ladder, but I have to strongly disagree. We were raised with rules but also able to find things out the hard way. It's really not nice seeing children being over protected and hemmed in. Your children are well behaved and look really happy being able to explore. 👍❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words 😊! It's an illusion that we can protect our children from everything, so we like to give them some leeway to experience some things for themselves. Of course, there are limits to this, for example, the children were not allowed on the scaffolding. If we regulate everything too tightly and wrap the children in absorbent cotton, they will never be independent and confident. Falling down, getting up and not crying after the fall, that's Lio! Be more careful next time? Maybe 😊. It's great to hear that you value the balance between rules and freedom - that's exactly what we try to achieve with our parenting too. Thank you for your support and for seeing the joy in their little adventures! ❤✨
That’s a lot to take on while you working on two other houses.
Yes, you are right!
It looks like the previous owner has died and the house was perhaps raided by looters. Very sad. My heart is crying for the poor cats. I never thought that things like this could happen in a highly developed country. Sad really. Good luck with restoration of this "old lady".
Thank you, Julia. It is indeed very sad to see how things can end up like this. The house has so much history, and the story of the cats is truly heartbreaking. We’re doing our best to bring new life to this "old lady" while respecting what’s been left behind. Thank you for your kind wishes-we’ll do our best to honor the past while creating a hopeful future. ❤️
Do you know why the house and the cats were abandoned? Would you give a home to some of these poor kitties?
We don’t know the whole story yet, but what we learned just a few days ago is that the previous owner passed away in the house, leaving the 20 cats alone for a very long time. Sadly, not all of them survived, but the surviving cats have found new homes with neighbors or in shelters.
@@TheBrenkes thank you for your reply. This is what I guessed. Again, good luck with your project. I will subscribe and support your channel.
Thank you for your support and the subscription! It means a lot! 😊
The Brenkes.... hello my name is Yuni from Indonesian, your house is still good 😊😊
Hello Yuni from Indonesia! 😊 Thank you so much! It’s a big project, but we’re working hard to make it a cozy home. We appreciate you following along on our journey! 🌍🏡
@TheBrenkes Good work friends, I hope you finish your hard work quickly💪😄
I also wondered if you had purchased several houses. From what I have seen on the internet, why are there so many abandoned houses in Sweden?
Thank you for asking! Yes, we have bought a few properties here in Sweden. The reasons are varied, but a lot of it has to do with shifts in population. Many people have moved from the countryside to cities for work, leaving behind family homes that have been passed down for generations but are now empty. The winter takes a huge toll on unused houses here. Snow, frost, and burst pipes cause damage quickly - just a few years without maintenance can lead to major deterioration.
It has a potential, it's up to you if you want to invest the time and money. How many cats were there? And what happened to them, afterwards?😢❤
It was around 20 cats in total. Most were taken to a shelter or found homes with neighbors. In the coming weeks, I’ll try to learn more about the history of the house.
Wow.
Hi from Canada. Good wishes for your new home.
Hi from Sweden! 😊 Thank you so much for the good wishes for our new home. Sending warm greetings to Canada!
Best of luck to y’all. The children were so excited. Very adorable 😊
Thank you so much! 😊 The kids were absolutely thrilled - their excitement makes everything even more special. We really appreciate the well wishes!
For safety a baby should be in a rear-facing car seat to prevent neck injury in sudden stops. Children should not use front seats until 13 years of age due to air bag injuries. 🙏🏻
Thank you for pointing it out!
Keep it? 8:57 I think so😊
Danke dir!
