    Awesome ride man, I have been looking for a vega to build for years but there aren't many left, most of the survivor examples are either totally gutted and turned full race car or they are just absolutely trashed and rusted out. One day I hope to find a complete 71-73 car and throw in a sbc(dont care what size) and a 4 speed and leave as much stock as possible i like the look of a stock one but with a nice v8 under the hood.

To be honest the 74 and up has grown on me a lot, same with the yellow. To this day i still look for them but it is a lot of work to do all the 5 lug, v8, rear axle stuff. The 74-75 non cosworth is definitely one of the better starting points for the larger tunnel, deep pocket front control arms and older 4 link rear suspension. Definitely start with as much of the car complete as possible, parts and glass are hard to get.

      @@BadBowtie91 yeah the 74 and up cars seem to be the only ones left for some reason, a year back a guy that was 3hrs away had a complete cosworth roller minus motor but everything else was there even the transmission and interior was flawless with zero rust but he wanted 6500 for it and I couldnt come up with those funds for a car like that. Its crazy how gm made so many of them but there are almost none left, and I have been doing some homework on them and you are correct that certain parts simply aren't available anymore. Also I know they are very weak but my dream is to keep one 4 lug with the vega gt wheels, I really like the look of them. The last vega I personally seen was over 10 years ago and it was owned by a local guy that ran a machine shop and it was a perfect cosworth that they did a fuel injected 4.3 swap on, it was kind of a shame but that car has been sold way back and as far as I know is long gone. There is another guy here on TH-cam with a 73 with a 305 in it and the car is almost exactly the way I would want it minus the th350. With the prices of some of these cars these days I dont think I'll be finding one anytime soon but I'm always on the lookout for one. And I understand that it will be alot of work to put together but I have been around a repair shop my whole life and have done some v8 s10s so I know about miserable swaps lol and I have access to alot of tools. Hope to see more videos of your car in the future it's a pretty badass ride.

    what manifold is that can't make it out, and carbs used. like the way you ran fuel lines with Y block high, save from possible vapor locking on hot days, after long rides with hood on it did offenhauser on DZ302 .030 overbore to clean walls, set of 600 cfm holley dbl pumpers 17/8" ceramic long tube headers into aftermarket 21/2" factory style exhaust for 69 Z28 of my buddies. tuned carbs by vacuum, ear, and tail pipes when I had it broken in on test stand I built for it, still using stock dual point distributor with 8mm wires in the car ran great with the m22 behind it, and factory ratio rear diff, but it likes the hi rpm's like a 4 banger, little sluggish in lower rpm's due to gearing. but keep it in 4000 up range, and she shines. not saying she can't be driven as a normal daily, you just have to give her little go juice from standing starts, and if she had a 20, are 21 that would help out on that, the the m22 is rather nasty and really tight between 1 n 2 shifts, that an the big clutch pack on lightweight flywheel don't help but walk her up through the box with climbing rpm's to let her stretch out, and she's sweet as jelly on a toast, and miles of smiles an silly grins from old men remembering back when you've some nice rides, you should've put more videos up, and you've been bitten, so I know your still building an playin somewhere out there. so put up some more, and they'll come to see your builds. matter of fact, I just liked subbed, and hit the bell, so I can see if n when it happens

      Its a Edelbrock ST-10 and two 390cfm dbl pumpers (old PN holleys). The Y block was just my way of copying the original DZ302 block and it wasnt easy to make but I think it was worth it. To keep from vapor locking I also used a fuel pump with a return to keep fuel circulating and I never had issues doing 4hr highway trips even under the hood of a vega with 190deg water temps. I have an M21 which has the same gearing as an M22 and honestly its good for putting power down, the 350 makes a significant amount more torque than the 302 so I can see how it was a bit loaded down low. The crossram (and tunnel ram) inherently make good torque because of the long runners, more so than a single plane and theres dyno numbers to prove why GM/racers did it in the Camaro Untold Secrets book. The only issue I ever had was I couldn't fit a vacuum advance distributor so at idle and on the highway I would be running less than ideal timing. I did tune it to perfection with an AFR gauge for idle, cruise and WOT and honestly performed way better than anyone could expect even with the small 390cfm carbs, more than enough to keep up with 650cfm other sbc's of similar power. Ive been working on this car for 10 years now and I drove it like this for 4 years or so. Just last year I started my conversion to EFI making my own kit, wiring harness and well everything to go on the SBC! I appreciate the sub and comment, usually I just post videos of banging gears and doing things I probably shouldnt these days but its worth it. @@BadBowtie91 It's been a while, but you could still buy Y blocks. But GM, didn't make things to support the cross ram, and I made, are adapted a bunch of the parts for the linkage, fuel lines, and even the power steering, alt brackets. Sounds as if you did the same, and other than a little shaking on your test run, you had her almost dialed in on the money. You probably know everytime the weather changed from one season to the next, carbs had to be adjusted slightly to allow for it if you wanted them to stay at their best. Worse problems we have is trying to get good non ethanol gas around here in NE Texas, as we've lost several big Holley carbs to that monster. Helped build couple Vega's back in the 70's, we kept twisting the frames due to torque, and ended up putting front, and mid plates on blocks to frames, to beat that issue. We were a little radical back then though, and tended to over build things, like sb chevys that that had to be chained down, because they ripped motor mounts out. I'm sure you wouldn't build anything like that though, like your stroker in the Z28 you had, are may still have. lol Addicting isn't it

    • @BadBowtie91
      @BadBowtie91 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothymilam732 Being up north in Canada we also have plenty of weather changes and cold morning starts, always had to keep playing with the carbs thought the season. For fuel we're lucky the 91-94 octane fuels are required to have less than ~10% ethanol or be ethanol free in some places. I got the running engine much smoother than this at idle, I had a bad vacuum leak from it backfiring on initial startup / a warp in the lid. My father and I have a couple of cars but we're street car people so nothing too radical but we're hard on our stuff, run 4 speeds and set them up to turn rpm but still have as much power under the curve as we can. Addicting? I wouldn't know I'm too busy planning the next step or buying more parts ! lol

      The crossmember is custom, used stock vega pedals without the cable/pulley assembly. Throwout bearing is a Quartermaster 721 series hydraulic unit and I used a wilwood master. With the hydraulic setup you can use any GM bellhousing/ trans that fits the firewall/tunnel, I had to use a small flywheel 153tooth / 10.5 clutch and small bellhousing with a little clearancing. Im in the process of putting a quicktime scattershield which also fits because of the tapered shape and would allow for a large flywheel / clutch potentially. I did have to move the fuse box over for the master but there is someone on the h-body forum who posted up how to make a conversion bracket here: forums.h-body.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=45000 Any other questions/parts feel free to ask, more can be seen here on the build thread: forums.h-body.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=30039 Thanks for checking out the vid! p.s. if you're not on the forum you should be for the FAQ and the forum wizards.

    you get that thing to run right?

    • @BadBowtie91
      @BadBowtie91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, running great. Tuning with an air fuel gauge really helps. Between that and manifold vacuum you can tune just about everything. Still tweaking the primary/secondary jetting.

      +BadBowtie91 year brother we have an xc-8 on a 327 that we made streetable an even gets decent fuel milage. we're running 390vc holleys with 10" velocity stacks

    • @BadBowtie91
      @BadBowtie91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats sweet! People have the wrong mentality thinking tunnel rams and crossrams cant be made streetable. 390vc holleys are perfect, these are 390dp holleys from the 80's with only front idle mixture, the new dp's have 4 corner idle mixture.

      +Rob C Thanks! I swapped a T56 6-speed into the camaro and a muncie 4 speed into the vega. Nothing beats banging gears!

      Nice!! My 79 camaro is a auto but my vega is a four speed. I like the vega more just for that reason. Cool cars

    Hey James, I really enjoyed your videos. I do have a question. What did you do with the lower control arm to put the S10 lower ball joint in it? it looks like you cut a larger hole and welded in a bearing race. i have purchased a kit with ball joint adapter bushings, but i would rather use the larger, stronger, ball joint if possible. so whats up? finished product is awesome.

    • @BadBowtie91
      @BadBowtie91 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ricky Walden I modified it to accept the balljoints from an s10 using a weld in sleeve, much larger than the factory vega one. Also while doing this you move them slightly to improve camber characteristics. You can find pictures and a PDF instruction here : forums.h-body.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=23253&start=60

  • @BadBowtie91
    @BadBowtie91 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    factory monza v8 frame plates and motor mounts. I didnt need a panhard bar because my vega had the early 4 link suspension rather than the later version.
