They did Daphne so dirty. I can only assume they bought out her contract given how early she left. She was brilliant, and were this done today she would be lauded. Ahead of her time and left in the dust by the producers.

Just a short piece of history that the "send me away" being stretched out like that I believe started with Randi. LuPone on the recording never did that, she just sang it in rhythm as the triplet and not stretched out with the E flat held. Then they continued to keep doing it that way, oddly enough, adding to the difficulty of the role (and Graff already found it difficult to sing, but was phenomenal). 😊

This les mis selection is being played by one of the late queens military bands.

Beautiful. The song shouldn't be pretty but tragic- This is one of better performances I've seen. It's not vain in any way, and doesn't represent a moment to 'show off' like so many others ive seen out there.

Honestly, the voice is perfect for this role. I never saw Fantine as a pure belter as they normally cast. That's why Anne Hathaway was incredible. She sold the role. Daphne gives all of that, but I feel her acting is held back a bit because she knows the live audience expects a betlter to sing this role live. Daphne is an actress first and the voice comes second. I can actually see her holding back her emotions to try and sing it properly. And I think that was a disservice to what she could have brought to this role.

I always love it when a much lower voice plays Valjean, and we’re all like, “hmmmm… okay. But will he hit the high- ope never mind, there he goes”. It’s amazing.

Though there are beautiful moment in this expression-wise, I don't feel this is for her. Her voice is too rough and she doesn't have the low notes.

I think this song has been done by so many musical theatre icons that it is hard to listen to this for me. I don't think she is a technically good singer at all.

Totally miscast. I think this was a deliberate attempt to make headlines by casting a Latina in the role, and to draw in the crowd who would go see Rent over and over. Vega was good as Mimi and Magenta in RHS, but this just doesn’t work.

I saw this back in '99 at the Majestic Theater when I was in college and it's a totally differently experience when you see this masterpiece live rather than on TV. As soon as the pipe organ kicks in, the floor vibrates, your chair shakes, and a plethora of emotions runs through your body. You feel joy, fear, suspense, awe, and so much more. You may even shed some tears, but that's ok. You're surrounded by musical magic & genius. It's sensory overload and it never gets old.

I’ve been sitting with this performance a lot. I think, in our days now, post Hathaway, current Covid, her desperation and grit actually bring something new and interesting. It’s not the best, but let’s be honest we’ve all seen a bad community theatre Les Mis, she’s giving something here we haven’t seen before and that’s something to be celebrated.

From this comparison, I'm really impressed with Gary Mauer. My favourite Phantom will forever be Colm Wilkinson, followed by John Cudia. I base this off seeing them live, and in Toronto we saw Colm first as Phantom before Les Misrables ever came to town. He owned the stage as the Phantom and his voice just hauled you in. With that said, I would have loved to have seen Crawford, JOJ and Ramin live to compare. Ironically, ive seen Ramin as Jean Valjean (with Earl Carpenter as Javert) and Ramin has the purest voice of any performer ive ever seen. Sorry for the long post, but the TH-cam videos never demonstrate how captivating Colm was as Phantom

I saw her in this role on Broadway, and, despite Les Mis literally being my favorite musical of all time (I first saw it on Broadway in 1997 as well as the national tour a few years later), it ruined the production for me. She was the worst Fantine of all time. Her voice was amazing for Mimi but, for classic musical theater, not so much. It def felt like they (producers of the show at this time) wanted a big name so they threw her in. I've never seen a show on Broadway where someone felt so miscast.

Again, Ramin’s 25th version is superior like oh my god that “beeeeeGIIIIIIIINNNN” always gets me 😔 incomparable. That first “I’m here the Phantom of the Opera too.” Honorable mentions: The excitement in Colm’s voice. Earl’s “Phantom of the opera.” Hugh’s mocking voice. No questions asked for Peter Karrie

Gotta give it to Stephen Buntrock here, in terms of comparing these specific renditions he's the best. I agree that Anthony Warlow gave the best "let others RIIIIIISE", but then he, like so many of the others, fell a little flat on the "until the Earth is free!". Buntrock really nailed the absolute, white-hot _rage_ Enjolras should be feeling, having just watched the French army callously gun down a twelve year old (I just looked it up. Gavroche was born some time 1820, and died in June 1832, making him either 11 or 12 depending on exactly when his birthday was).
