Totally agree with you on your favorite soprano saxophone players. Another one that has a great tone to immulate is Walter Beasley. It took me a long time to stumble on to him and he sings great too.

Saxophone is not that easy to play. I don't know why everyone thinks it is. It takes a lot of time getting use to dealing with just the reed. Finger control and the list goes on and on. Not to say It's impossible but get ready to put a lot of time into the instrument and by all means, take professional lessons.

not worth the bother changing unless it feels better to you the player. Sound timber is pretty much the same.

Make sure you wet the reeds and be mindful that some reeds come alive after a few days of playing.

I’m a saxophone noob about 7 months in at the tender age of 59 playing tenor. When friends and acquaintances found out that I was pursuing sax, a plethora of their kids altos came out of the closets to offer me a new path.😅 So, by month 3, I added alto to my journey and I enjoy playing both. I am attracted to playing 80s/70s pop and it’s coming along well. I can memorize songs in 3-7 days so I spend most of my time working on rhythm and technique. Although my original idea was to add a bari in a year or two, I have swerved into wanting a soprano…It arrives tomorrow. 😂 I will be following you for more information to help me along my journey. I wanna learn the golden clarinet so badly

Saxmute one is good. I have the Japanese brand of that with a line out plug that can be connected to tuner. It’s few hundred dollars, better than to renovate the room to be soundproof

I've been watchin this video many times now,,,,,, I still don't get it, I wanna have a ear monitoring earphone, I have a sax mic that I connect to Bose S1Pro+ speaker with my laptop, it wokrs wonderful,,, the thing is I wanna connect my ear monitoring earphone, , how would this audio interface work with it? I would appreciate if you can make another vidoe that s more elaborative.

Between alto sax and soprano sax, which one is easier? Coz i realize that many people under the comment section plays the alto,so what's the difference between a alto sax and a soprano sax thanks.

The strongest point you made here is the mouthpiece does more for you than the actual sax itself and that makes perfect sense

1998 - I mastered alto sax for 25 years. 2015 - I mastered tenor sax for 9 years. 2015 - I mastered soprano sax after two months with the tenor.

I really think that the pro sax sounded just slightly smoother.

@Allen, I agree that it’s a fine video; at about 2:15, when talking about posture with a straight neck, you say that your head will have to come forward, but you’re head is pointing down. I’ve heard Joe G at Soprano Planet say that’s where he aims his airstream, but to my eye, you state the opposite of what you’re actually doing. Thanks!

Thanks so much for your video, priceless advises! I have a straight one, find it very smooth compared to my oboe but feels soooo heavy 😝. What is your opinion pls: in the film “Jean Michel Basquiat - Downtown 81” he is waving something like a VERY THIN soprano. Is it a soprano or something called differently? If you Google the name,e of the film you’ll see the instrument on the poster right away. Cheers!

I kinda like to sing, but I suck at it and no way I would ever want to have someone listen to my voice. but mostly: singing takes words and one can't really improvise with singing because of it. That's why I'm checking out the sax. I play a little piano and I just jumped into learning music theory and improvising - mostly blues scales since those are (or seem to be) fairly easy. call me odd, but I don't really care that much to play songs. I want to 'just play', ideally. Anyway. nice video. bit of a (small) downer that the notes aren't called the same on the two instruments.

I heard somewhere that sax players have hearing loss as time goes by. Is it like that?

Just what the doctor ordered. As a beginner I have a library of jazz solos in my head I must eventually learn. This video on playing by ear I find very helpful. Keep up the great work my young brother.

Great presentation. You provided a very understandable description of the various characteristics of mouthpieces and what they produce in sound.

You ever just practice your scales to a metronome or tuner but have Netflix playing on mute? I disagree with using a tuner to keep in tune but rather let concert A ring out and playing every note on the scale checking tune. But that’s just me. My ears would tell me if I’m in tune instead of my eyes.

Hey man. Love your youtube page. Eventually, I'd like to shell out 2k or more on a nice soprano but right now I only want to spend about $500. It seems i can only find the really cheap ones or really expensive.. no in between. Im a self proclaimed multi-instrumentalist. I play guitar by ear and I can read notes a little. Been doing so since 2006 or so. I can play bass and piano as well. I used to play clarinet in middle school but never liked the tone enough to keep playing it. I love those sound of soprano sax.. loved Kenny G as a kid and now as an adult I like John Coletrane and a few others too.. I really want to learn soprano asap
