I started with X-Plane 9 because I had bought a new mac. I had used Microsoft flight simulator since 1985 on a Commodore 64, then the commodore Amiga (still the best OS ever) I must say X-Plane runs a lot better on my 2019 Mac Pro (not MacBook Pro) than my new Falcon $6,000 desktop with nVidea GTX 4090.

Looking at the MS 2024 Disaster I am quite sure I do not want to stream the scenery. To be frank, storage is dead cheap and if you give me 4TB of data to download I am more then happy to download it. Same with the planes, airports etc. Maybe add a streaming option on top of it.

Wow, great explanation in the first 5 minutes as to why generic game engines are not the answer for flight sims. I'm looking forward to how Asobo and XPlane are going to keep improving what has already reached an incredible level of visual fidelity the past 4 years.

Context: with FS24 stability issues I just bought x-plane and the FF777. The sims really are chalk and cheese tbh but (for me) there's room for both. MSFS graphics in terms of plane and clouds is far better than XP. XP default airports absolutely destroy MSFS wrt basic layout and especially taxiway, signage and lighting quality. If I have a night flight atm I pretty much default to XP. The graphic thing I find really glaring is the way that looking in external view the plane doesn't look the be part of the same scene that the tarmac occupies. The closest way I can describe it is like the old cel shaded games and to me the plane looks like it's on the top cel, placed on the scenery cel. The biggest difference as a new user is probably the eco-spheres. I went looking for additional scenery and basically there is not the same (vast) amount of freeware available that MSFS has. A lot of that is pretty abysmal but the difference in numbers is striking especially given how long XP has been around. No biggie - just an observation. I am enjoying the sim and (mostly) manage to ignore the weather depiction issues but the hardest thing to deal with is lack of traffic. To be clear I'm talking about things like FSLTL which can inject traffic and BATC/FSHUD which manage it and provide ATC. Before shouting - I have looked at the commercial and freeware solutions for XP but the concensus seemed to be that XP does not allow external injection and control into the sim. I would really have liked a question to the devs as to whether that was on the radar. Until something like that happens XP will feel empty to me. Another gap I saw in the interview was no apparent question about how the new streaming model would avoid the pop-in nonsense that continues to afflict FS24 - honestly, my heart sank a little when I heard about focus on streaming and a marketplace - sounds very much like emulating the MS model and that's partly whet triggered me to buy XP in the first place - it was a very different approach. MS has the scale to throw cash at this which I doubt XP has and I'd feel more comfortable if XP focused on their strengths. 2c from a noob. Please don't flood me with assertions that FS is a toy and XP is whatever - I have a balanced view of strengths and weaknesses for each and will repeat - I use and will continue to use both as I see fit.

Regarding switching graphics settings for VR and 2D monitor flying, the preferences are saved in a text file, so with a little scripting know-how it's not hard to edit those. That's what I did. I made separate launchers for both modes that adjust the graphics settings before starting the sim. I also added the VR version of the launcher on Steam so I can start it all from the headset.

I'm glad to see X-plane being willing to move towards Ortho Scenery. The hardcore guys can use map enhancement or autoortho and pile on some scenery. But the regular consumer just sees the "real" look of msfs right out of the box and calls it a day. I far prefer XP12 but if someone comes over and they want to fly something (and the weather is bad) I open up MSFS

I dont care about ortho streaming a lot. What strikes me more is the broken Anti Aliasing and the broken lighting since the earyl access release. I usually fly X-Plane 11 more than XPL12 because of the blurry pixel show XPL12 puts up. Exposure control is another broken story in XPL12 for two years now. So orthos scenery is not a key aspect at the moment IMO.

Requiring Terra Bytes of scenery data to make X plane look acceptable is a non starter for most people.

Great sim but, they're going to struggle until they stream ortho. Realistically moving air would be a game changer.

I'm going to add to this theory if I may. I believe the reason why Aerosoft rushed A330 is because of PMDG 777 wide body that also going to be released.

The default ground texture of X-Plane is an awful joke, a not funny joke. However, the helicopter physics is the best, in which MSFS 20/24 are not even in the same league. I bought X Plane just for the helicopter.

How absolutely stupid. No pilot/ co pilot shared cockpit. Makes zero sense. Along with their piss poor AI voice as well.

One thing that might help night scene frame rate a bit, maybe day as well, is maybe not having street lights all along the Interstate roads, just have them populate at the interchanges, and in high building density areas. One little change that I think would help GPUs.

I would really love X-Plane to implement missions and career like MSFS did and/or even stories, because after a while just flying from point A to point B becomes boring if there's no purpose behind it. That imo would be a killer feature that's gonna get a lot of people to come to X-Plane.

I fly exclusively in VR in a motion rig and xplane VR excludes the sim for me. If Xplane brought quad views, I'm in. Eye tracking and dynamic foveated rendering would huge. Please make that possible because you would capture the VR audience to Xplane.

Interesting how physics, flight dynamics or flight modes have not been discussed. Graphics isn't everything in a flight sim.

I've been using X Plane since its early 2000s but enough is enough with all the "superior flight model" platitudes. A simmer sitting on his/her gaming chair in the basement would know a good flight model even if it hit them in the head. To think otherwise it is pure delulu stuff.

I maybe only fly 5% of the time I would like to fly with X-Plane 12. Most important reasons? 1. Cockpits are in daylight black, outside everything is white! It's simply not possible to fly X-Plane 12 at daylight. 2. The weather engine. You only need a few clouds to have thunder lightning. 3. The overdone flight dynamics. Yes, a Cessna 172 get a lot of ground effect approaching the runway. A A340 at max landing weight does not behave like a Cessna 172! I had flights with the VSkylabs C47 and with a wet runway and crosswind I'm not able te get the plane straight. It skidded of the runway. These behaviors ar e overdone in X-Plane. Actually the sim is only usable at night time with steady weather. As soon as I have the possibility to move to MSFS 2024 X-Plane will be removed from my MacBook. By the way. I use X-Plane already from version 4 in the 90's. So I'm not a beginner.

Interesting interview, full of good info. I'm amazed, reading through the comments, just how much negativity there is. It reminds me of the Fly! days comparing Fly! with MSFS. I can't believe that these people sat through almost 2 hours just to post their comments. If I have one negative comment it is that the interview was rather 'heavy iron' orientated, with little mention of GA and helicopters. I guess that's what their subscribers enjoy. Of course, any graphics or physics improvements will also filter down to GA planes and make the sim better for everyone. As a native Linux user, I really appreciate being able to fly X-Plane without having to re-boot into Windows 🙂and it is great to see all versions released together.

Id like to thank ms/asobo for their recent release it is most certain to bring real simmers back to the x-plane sky's.

FSX had this, it was on the roadmap for FS2020 yet we are to believe this answer? No shared cockpit = no buy for me, its what makes flight sims awesome.

I was told months ago that this was going to be a feature and that's the reason I bought it. Dang it! Oh well. I'll still find it enjoyable but GET ON IT GUYS!

He fails to understand what's wrong with the weather radar. It's not just the tilting that is missing. A simulated weather radar needs more information about the reflectivity of a cloud and its shape to make a good depiction of it. It should also have the filtering features that real radars have. How could they ignore something as important as this?? Also the weather improvements do not address the important things that the weather system is lacking. In real world there are many more types of clouds. In the sim we just have cumulus type clouds varying in altitude. That's all. It's pretty unrealistic. Where are the high level ice clouds?? Where are those cirrus clouds? Where's the anvil in big thunderstorms? Where are the lenticular clouds and the rotors that form downwind?

I wish xp12 code was written to take advantage of all cpu threads. I have a quite powerful desktop and still am forced to tone down settings to run at a consistent 20+ FPS. The cpu gets so hot I have to blow cold ice cube air to keep things manageable. Not normal!

Great video! I am an ex pilot and aeronautical engineer, did build a cockpit and am running 3 TVs and 3 touch displays around and in my cockpit. Am flying with 4 different a/c. I fly with MSFS and XP. Really prefer XP over MSFS. However since I am not and will never be a PC freak need from XP three things: 1. fully supported and automated installation of adons, eg by the store, since I am not willing to move files in directories anymore. 2. Better scenery at low and mid level flights (not single blade of grass when taxiing). 3. more compatible Air Manager Instruments/panels with XP (non of your business). What I really do not need are toys like in MSFS (challenges, careers ….) and surely not the hundreds of bugs in MSFS never solved. Looking forward to what will come from X-plane soon I hope. Regards
