How I setup my Rav4 TRD OffRoad as a camper (update)/ Review of the Wheels & Feels sleeping platform
Explored Stanislaus National Forest with Doug the dog. Visited Pinecrest Lake, Trail of the Gargoyles, Dardanelle and the Stanislaus River. Included is a tour of the inside of my car and update to the setup since adding the Wheels & Feels "Yosemite" sleep platform and cargo drawer, and a brief review of the product.

Like the video but not a fan of the fisheye hard to see the gear/drawer system
Thanks for watching and the feedback. This is the first video I shot primarily with Insta360 cameras, so I'm still getting a feel for how to best edit and use all the footage those capture!
As a small dog owner, I appreciate you keeping your doggie on a leash! 🙂
Yeah, gotta be responsible with our furry friends, right? Plus, he's cute, but he can also be a tiny terror, so better to be safe than sorry.
My Rav4 will be delivered in 3 weeks. Then I'll be ready for cruising also.
Congrats, I hope you get as much use out of it as I do!
I'll be getting my new Rav4 XSE hybrid in a few weeks. Your video is helpful. My favorites from this video are the LED lights and the knee pad. Those are must-have items. I'll have to see what type of lights my Rav4 comes with. Btw, I like your comment about the visor pouch holding CDs back in the day!
What did you have in your visor/Cd player in your car?
You can get a third-party hitch for a fairly inexpensive price. I have a Yakima. Its 450 liters but I do keep it on full time. Great set up and I hope you have many adventures!
Very true! And Yakima makes great stuff--I actually have a Yakima OffGrid roof basket on my roof right now. My biggest concern with most third-party hitches is that you lose a bit of ground clearance that you don't with the OEM hitch, and while I don't have a lift on the Rav4 I need all the ground clearance I can get!
Ah! You have a platform/drawer system! I was looking into these for my incoming Rav4. Can you provide any details? Do you have a video about it?
I'm currently working on a video about it, so stay tuned for that! It's made by a company called Wheels & Feels (wheelsfeels.com/), and they have a variety of different storage solutions for the Rav4 and other popular vehicles like Jeep Wranglers and 4Runners. If i could do it over again, I'd get it in a natural wood finish without the carpet cover on it, but that's been my biggest complaint about it. Other than that, I love having the extra storage and a level sleeping area for camping in the car!
@@brendansoutdoors377 Awesome, I look forward to your video, and thanks for the info!
Hi just found your channel and subbed. I'm in the East Bay, Walnut Creek. Started car camping in my Hyundai Santa Fe and now have a 4Runner so looking for tips and ideas. I'll check out your other videos. It is so much easier car camping verses setting up a tent and love being able to stealth places.
Hey Tina, thanks for watching! That 4Runner is probably a huge improvement over a Santa Fe for how it sounds like you’re using it. I always wanted a 4Runner but couldn’t justify the ancient EPA rating/fuel economy. I keep thinking maybe as the 6th gen gets a couple model years under its belt that I might upgrade to that down the line. Check out my upgrades/accessories and essential camping items videos as well for more tips and gear I recommend!
I've noticed in norcal the winter beaches get steeper and pebbly and in summer sandy with less slope. Cool little rat dog.
Yeah, northern Calfornia beaches definitely don't fit the picture-postcard image of what a "California beach" is supposed to look like! A lot of them are "shelf" beaches, meaning there's a steep dropoff from the shore into the ocean, causing large waves and dangerous swimming conditions (if you were brave enough to get into that freezing water in the first place!) Thanks for watching!
I bought one and used it twice on the back of my van. Had many issues with wind, and the velcro window did NOT stay velcroed in the rain. .I had to take it down when it tried to imitate a sailboat. I do like your suggestion of two guylines on each pole, and not putting the poles all the way up until the guylines are in place. I did set it up with the second set of poles and they didn't stay in very well. Do you think sandbags on the poles would help? Thanks for the helpful video
Yeah, that little window is more of a breeze vent than something intended to keep out the elements. I think in general this should be thought of as a sun-shade and not necessarily up to the task of sheltering anyone from any (even slightly) extreme weather. The whole logic of guylines on the poles is that they’re keeping the poles straight up, which is what’s keeping the awning in the air. Multiple guylines set at different angles keep better tension on a pole than just the one. Sandbags would be good if the problem were the tent flying up and away, not falling down.
Brendan hi I’d like to know what year is your RAV4? I have a 2023 do you think that has incandescent or LED lighting on the 2023 RAV4?
Hey George, thanks for watching! My Rav is a 2020. A 2023 Rav4 is going to have LED “room lights” as Toyota calls them and door switches-they figured out that people want interior LED’s after the 2022 model year, I think. I can’t speak to their temperature or brightness though. Hope that helps!
Like those lights
They’re pretty sweet, thanks for watching!
Thank you Brendan I managed to install my lights in the cargo area . Thank you for your reply. Regards Ed
No problem Ed! You’ve inspired me to finally getting around to add that mod to my Rav4
Hi just can’t get enough of your videos thank you. I do need you help on two matters. 1. What are the details of the usb charger that fits the blank in the dash board please. 2. Please note there are many differences / changes to the2023 hybrid RAV4 . I cannot get help even from Toyota in Australia. I want to access the cargolight in the rear of the cabin and no one can advise on how to remove it , to install lights on rear hatch door. Please reply Thank you again Ed.
Hi Ed, thanks for watching. To answer your questions: 1. I'm a bit confused as I don't think I mentioned anything about a usb charger that fits in any of the blank panel switches. I mentioned a wireless Carplay adapter. Perhaps you're talking about that, or maybe you meant to leave this comment on another video? 2. I'm aware that some of these changes/upgrades such as interior LED lighting, wireless carplay, etc. don't apply to newer model year Rav4's (post '21) as Toyota went ahead and made those changes as standard OEM equipment in later model years. I can tell you that in order to get to the light in the cargo area to change the bulb I had to remove the fixture with a plastic trim removal tool, which pops out the whole assembly. You can use a screwdriver too, or even a credit card, just pop it in behind one of the corners of the light until the thing pops out. I haven't done the lights-on-the-rear-hatch-door upgrade yet, but here are the links for several rather complete walkthroughs of what it is I think you're getting at: th-cam.com/video/uckafuPauB8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RAacxyOAOCLQ01_m th-cam.com/video/53hdjNpJ3O8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-DYwsa3kqLqDw15M
I totally agree about it being to dark at night in my Rav4 I bought last week. I just ordered a led light kit. I have know idea how to install them though lol! I'll have to hire someone that knows how without messing up my Rav!
They’re actually really easy to install! You just use the included pry tool to open all the lighting fixtures and switch out the original bulbs. Do a quick YT search for “changing led bulbs in rav4” and a bunch of instructional videos pop up like this one: th-cam.com/video/LzzZmdIMt04/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FdhXbNF9dDLfi_qn
Good info. I'm planning on my first road trip from Los Angeles to somewhere in Texas, to view the solar eclipse on April 8th.
Thanks! That sounds like a fun trip, I hope you have a good time!
I like the steering table. Yes it looks kinda dumb at first but it is super functional.
Yeah, at first glance it looks goofy but it's certainly handy. Thanks for watching!
very clever. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I expected off road stuff
Most off-road stuff doesn't necessarily fit into the "easy" category of modifications and upgrades, but thanks for watching!
Life saver
Thanks for watching! And check out part 2!
I have a 2023 RAV4, when I take it off road I notice it collected a lot of dust on the floor in the back seat. Did you experience this?
I have not. Even when I roll windows down/open moonroof there’s only a normal amount of dust. Maybe you have a gap in one of the gaskets sealing your rear doors?
Hey! I love your content! I am a member of a brand producing Jeep's accessories. Could you shoot a video for our brand?
Hi there, thanks for watching! Go ahead and send me an email at ahernbrendan696@gmail.com with some more details. I'm not a Jeep guy, but I'd be interested to know more about what it is you're looking for!
Excellent list. I added 4 items from your video to my Amazon list. Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching.
Good ideas. I'm planning to start my Car Adventure this year. Been watching your videos to prepare myself.
Thanks for watching! The best way to get ready is to go try it out somewhere close to home at first, that way if you forgot something or aren't comfortable you can always go back home and readjust.
I like it
Thanks for watching!
Where I buy this carplay?Thanks
Is the link in the description not working?
I enjoy your videos, some good suggestions. I've already done some of the mods like swapping out interior lights for LEDs, and the center console organizer. I know it's a matter of taste but man I hate the black out emblems lol. I know a lot of people like them, they look like cheap rubber to me vs. shiny metal. Just doesn't do it for me but to each his own. I have a RAV4 Prime so it's interesting to see some of the TRD differences. Oh, I have the window visors too, I think they're great and I can't believe how they've held up. They were totally worth every penny. Your type are interesting, I got the stick on ones but I like yours too.
Thanks for watching! I love the look of my TRD/Adventure body style but I love the tech of the Prime. If they only combined the two, and gave that hypothetical combination a 2-3inch lift and some proper suspension!
Couldn’t help but notice you had King Gizzard playing. Fellow member of the Weirdo Swarm
If you look closely you'll notice a nonagon on my roof rack and that I'm wearing a custom gizz hoodie in the intro! hahahThanks for watching :) Check out this video of when I went to go see the band at the Madonna Inn/camped on the beach in the car down near Pismo: th-cam.com/video/MAb89HXxSRM/w-d-xo.html
Sorry but I don't like lights that make me feel like I'm in Walmart or an office.
I usually prefer a warmer light temperature for my environments, but as they're not constantly on while I'm using the car like they would be in an office or a Walmart, and their main reason for existing is so that I can actually see things for the brief moments that they're on in the car, I'll take the upgrade in functionality from the factory-installed incandescent bulbs. They also make replacements in warmer colors, or in whatever color you like: amzn.to/3GzgMkb
10:00 weed rollin tray💨💨
I mean, you could use it for any reason you might need a temporary flat surface in your car, including for rolling up your preferred herbal remedy 😆
LMAO! All jokes aside, SOLID VIDEO! it seems like Toyota took most of these upgrades and modifications into consideration, purchased my 2023 trd offroad few weeks ago now and have probably half of these already are already installed. Btw i do not plan on rolling up or smoking in the new rav4 but my stoner brain couldn’t help but comment!
Ok there was a small creature in your car with glowing eyes
ah yes, that was my chupacabra
Nice video! You helped a lot, I want to see it planning on going in July 2024. Did you check out the town?
The town of.....Shelter Cove? Which town we talking about?
Great idea's!!!! What breed is your Furbaby? Simply ADORABLE ❤
Not quite sure! I haven't done any DNA testing because I rather enjoy the mystery. When I adopted him they told me he was a terrier/chihuahua mix, and that would make sense. I also sometimes think he's a Markiesje, which is a breed of small hunting dog from the Netherlands. Do a quick google image search and you'll see what I mean :)
9:28 у меня точно такой же столик для обеда в моем RAV4:)
хороший! Спасибо за просмотр!
OMG 😳 too Funny!!! I didn't build a platform either within my 2010 Rav Limited... Walmart exercise mat that I store against Rav s celling when not used .. Walmart 4inch memory foam mattress rolled up behind driver's seat.. .. WattFun Power Station mounted off Rav floor. Simple clothes and cookware in Rav s rear storage area.. extremely clean and functional setup..
Thanks for watching!
Get a drawer knob from a hardware store and put it in the center of the center console tray. Makes lifting out the tray easy and it’s about $4
Clever idea!
You are going to destroy the Pacific Northwest by doing great videos about it. Which will cause people to come to the Pacific Northwest. Everyone it rains here every day all day long. Go to New England it never rains there. It has Beautiful trees that change colours!
I don't know that I'd call central California "the Pacific Northwest," but um....yeah, go to New England! Thanks for watching!
thanks for showing your set up. I plan to purchase a Rav 4 and do some camping in it. I love Doug, but feel that he needs a larger container with all the time he spends in it. It appears he sleeps in it overnight too.
Hey, thanks for watching, Janice! This video is from when Doug was just a fresh lil puppy. He's grown since then, and so has his crate! Most of the time these days he rides in the back seat, sitting cozy in a car bed and harnessed in to his own doggie seatbelt, and when we sleep in the car he usually starts curled up at my feet in my sleeping bag and eventually makes his way to his own bed by the morning, or vice versa :)
@@brendansoutdoors377 that sounds wonderful. Dogs are family for sure!!
Just wanted to say I appreciate the dog hot weather warning, good to see someone always trying to get the message out. Excited to try some of these mods soon too.
Thanks for watching!
Have you had any problems with the wireless CarPlay adapter?
Occasionally I update the firmware with a link from the manufacturer. Sometimes it drops bluetooth signal/has trouble connecting, but that's usually only in remote locations.
Nice editing. Enjoyable to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello we’re Primus and we suck
Ah, a man of culture I see...
I ordered WeatherTech floor mats for the front and rear floors. The rain Guards! A few things since my wife and i purchased a 2021 Toyota Rav4 are selves! And love it!
That's great! Glad you're also loving your Rav4
What is the intro song?
It's music I composed in Garageband to score this video, so it doesn't have a name....yet
@@brendansoutdoors377 can you upload it please
@@brendansoutdoors377 also what wattage jackery do you recommend for someone wanting to run a fridge/freezer and a box fan all night in their rav 4?
I would recommend at least the 500 watt version (amzn.to/3Yr4suk). You can plug the Jackery into the car so that it will charge while the car is on and then plug exterior electronics like a fridge/freezer or fan into the Jackery to run them while the car is off. If you plan on being stationary in one spot while camping or out for more than a couple days I would also recommend their SolarSaga 100w solar panel (amzn.to/3qtdRVI) to keep your battery topped up and operational while using your fridge/other electronics while your car is off.
@brendanahern2603 I'm gonna be doing deliveries like doordash and instacart every day so a lot of driving and stopping and going... not sure if this changes anything you recommended
I love your channel and the great video content. I had to do the battery replacement recently for my 2018 RAV 4 Adventure.
Thanks for watching!
Hey Brendan, the link to steering wheel emblem overlay doesn’t work anymore. Do you have a new link? Thank you!
Just switched that out-thanks for the heads up!
You should make more videos!!! great content.
Working on it!
Cargo box get an mpg hit. basket not as much plus more diverse.
yes. If I had a garage I might be more interested in the cargo box, but the basket is great for what I'm doing with it.
Nice set up bro. I just got a RAV4 Prime and it’s getting wrapped up in PPF and tinted. I love your roofrack. Nicely done. I havea panaramic moonroof so I’m considering how I’ll set up my roof rack without ruining the great view.
Prime? That's sick. That mileage range/fuel economy would certainly come in handy on road trips. Are you getting it wrapped in any alternate color or just PPF? I'd get my windows tinted but I live in SF and i'm paranoid that as soon as I tint them some dingus will just smash my window in. Yeah the pano roof is great until you want to use your roof for storage. I guess you have to think about what you're trying to store up there--it probably has a lower load capacity than the standard roof model. Maybe a hitch rack wouldn't be a bad idea to consider as well? I've been thinking about putting a hitch on my Rav for a while now just for the additional capacity--maybe move the bike racks? Or add a storage box/kitchen/spare tire carrier? My wishlist of pending modifications/accessories is: 1) full size spare tire 2) 2" lift 3) upgrade springs to decrease sag when loaded with gear/improve ride quality on rougher dirt roads 4)more internal organization 5) upgrade fog lights 6) sound deadening material install in the doors and ceiling
New subbie friend! My, now husband, and I hiked the southern portion of LCT and also stayed at Mattole up north during the fires in 2021. This was a Beautiful video! We are planning to stay at the Inn now. The Lupin and fog ans beach shots were breathtaking. My favorite, was your pup....I teared up at the end to see the sad dedication.....what a life that sweet doggy friend had!!❤❤ You spoiled him.
Yeah I highly recommend the Inn if you're looking for a nice lil getaway on the Lost Coast that doesn't involve roughing it. Thanks for watching all the way to the end! Fred was the best boy, and although his life was short and ended sadly, it was full of adventure and love and he brought me and everyone around him so much joy. I miss him constantly, even with my new pup Doug around the house 🥹
Awesome video! How can I get more info?
Thanks! What is it that you're looking for more info on?
@@brendansoutdoors377 Are you on instagram or Facebook? Would love to follow for more content
I'm on instagram (@brontosaurusridesagain) but that account isn't really affiliated with this YT channel, it's mostly photos of my dog, stories of random stuff I'm doing, or music I'm seeing somewhere. Occasionally they overlap, but not super often!
