Toyota Tacoma Lift Install in 10 minutes | Suspension Swap | Ironman 4x4 Foam Cell Pro | 2016-2023
You MUST have an alignment done before driving the vehicle!
Lifting a vehicle is inherently dangerous. Always use proper jacking points and safe wrenching methods to work on your vehicle.
In this video I will show you how to install most lift kits or swap components of your Tacoma's suspension. The processes are nearly identical. Please be aware that your specific lift kit may have different installation requirements than what is show in this video!
Recheck all torque specs after driving for the first few hundred miles.

Thank you for the how to video. What was your final lift measurements and did you get any vibration after ? The truck turned out awesome!
Thanks! I can't wait to get it out on the beach and see how it does. So far around town it's very smooth. No more diving and clunking. Final lift was exactly 3in over stock. I do have a very slight vibration at 25mph but my guess is that's because I didn't change out the U-Joint shims on the driveshaft. I had an existing pair of shims on it from my 2.5in OME lift and thought that would do, but apparently not. I'm planning on swapping the OME ones for the ones that came with the Ironman kit sometime later this week. Hopefully that fixes it. If not then I will probably take a leaf out of the the pack to drop the driveshaft angles a little to get it better aligned and adjust the front accordingly so that I don't have squat. Edit: turns out I had a balancing weight on my tire that got knocked off. Glued it back on and no more vibes
Gracias por hacer estos videos, dé asesoramiento.
¡De nada hombre!
Just purchased a Bronco, found this video, hit up your Amazon link, and installed it exactly as you described. Appreciate the clear directions!😀 Thank You Mike!
For sure! Happy to help
would it be possible to give me the dimension between tailgate and the top of rear window and from bed floor to the rails inside. thanks
35in from the floor to the back hatch lowest point, 38in from floor to ceiling inside bed.
I just got the OVS Nomad XD delivered today. Thank you for a quick overview of what I am getting into!
For sure. It's a great awning and has really held up over the years.
Dang this is way more difficult than wiring up the smart cap
Yeah it’s slightly easier if you have a trailer harness already since the wires are more accessible. Even then though, you’re dealing with tiny wires and t taps
Somebody needs to take the engineers at Toyota out behind the wood shed and explain to them that canister oil filters are just fine and your over engineered decision is WRONG.
I use an old piece of vinyl flooring instead of cardboard for the oil catch area, makes it easier to slide this old body out from under the vehicle and it can be easily cleaned and wiped off, when done it gets rolled up in the corner of the shed ready for next time ,nice concise video
Smart!
Go ahead then and get that magnuson supercharger then my guy
Send me $8k and I’ll happily do it
Great video and you’ve answered a lot of my questions in these comments. Another kinda dumb question, but is it possible to clean the outside of the windows between the cab and the canopy? Seems like those would get pretty dirty after a while reducing visibility.
Yeah I would say there’s actually a lot more space between the cap and the cab than a traditional setup. From experience you can definitely get a hand and squeegee down in there if your arms are long enough.
Very nice, am leaning to Alpha Rex myself. Did you compare them?
Yeah solely based on reviews. At the time it seemed like Alpharex had a lot of quality control issues. While its not hard to swap lights out it’s certainly a process and I didn’t want to deal with that if I had issues
@ ahh I haven’t heard that 🤔. So, 2 years later, thoughts on the Morimotos?
Solid! Great light pattern, no oxidation, everything still works as it should
Did the guide say to drill out the holes for the 5 studs to 16mm? Mine does and that's like twice the diameter of the studs?
I honestly don’t remember, this was a long time ago. From what I recall it was just a paper template. We started with small pilot holes and then gradually stepped it up until the studs could make it through
THAT IS SO COOL CANOPY, ARE YOU BOUGHT THAT DIRECT FROM SOUTH AFRICA, IF SO, HOW LONG TO ARIVE? I’M IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN ORANGE COUNTY AREA, IS THAT CANOPY MADE FOR 2023 F-150 PLATINUM 5’5 BED SIZE. IT SEEMS QUITE SIMPLE TO PUT IT TOGETHER BY MYSELF DESPITE IS NOT THAT HEAVY, IS THE PRICE IS THE SAME THAT ONE YOU HAVE WITH THAT ONE WITH WINDOW ON BOTH SIDE THE RUCK, I GET IT WHY YOU PICK WITHOUT WINDOW GLASS FOR A SECURITY YOUR BELONGING BUT WITHE SIDE WINDOWS GLASS DO THEY ALSO CAN PUT IT PROTECTION LIKE A GUARD AROUND THE GLASS WINDOWS TO IT? IS THAT COME WITH IT OR YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE SEPARATELY? PLEASE HELP ME OUT ABOUT THIS, I WOULD LIVE TO BUY IT IF THEY MADE FOR MY F-150 5’5 BED. THANK YOU, I APPRECIATE IT.
My 2015 Camry has the same. I park next to the curb, so the car leans toward the passenger side. When the winter rains come all the summer dust in the sunroof tries to follow gravity out the drain on the passenger side. Every winter there's a big glob of mud clogging the drain hole. I use a bass guitar string to clear the drain tube.
Never thought of the guitar string technique, that’s a creative idea
Excellent video, and glad that we could be a part of it! We’ll keep our eyes peeled for other stuff coming from you!
You guys awesome! Thanks for the support
It’s 12v lol 😂 no pro needed

Sure thing 🤘🏽
Which, with the two different oils
It's the same weight, 0W-20, the smaller one was just because I didn't want to buy another 5qt bottle when I only max needed one more quart.
Great video my man. You really have the only video out there of a bracket install visual. I've been working on installing the brackets on mine today but the instructions aren't super clear, I'm not sure if they sent me the wrong threaded plates/ button head screws... if you get a chance, can you send me an up close picture of the brackets mounted from all angles? I'll send ya $20 bucks, seriously... I refuse to take this canopy off the truck now after battling it on solo as well, lol. Appreciate the videos!
I’m at work for the next 10ish hours so I won’t be able to get a shot of it until then. Shoot me a picture of what you got so far on instagram DM. No need to pay me lol
@ I finally just figured it out after studying screenshots of your setup, appreciate you reaching out and offering a helping hand!
For sure! Glad you got that sorted. Yeah I remember most of the install was smooth but getting the flat slotted nuts or whatever you want to call them into the channels was a major headache due to powder coat overspray.
I had my last 2 oil changes at dealership since it had factory maintenance.. They overtightened it so hard I had to use a drill to get it off, and did end up with a small leak because it cracked a little. The oil drain bolt, the ring literally glued on the pan, i have no idea how did they fk that up. I am eyeing the aluminum oil housing now, maybe its better.
This is exactly why I started changing mine myself. Even though the service is free, I realized it was going to end up costing me when some tech would inevitably overtighten and crack the housing with an impact gun. Luckily it never came to that since I started doing it myself.
This guy is hot af. He should be a model
Thanks for the awesome video! 💯
I try my best!
I didn't know the direction of airflow, thanks for clarifying.
Absolutely
Ordered them for my 22 trd pro and jacked to replace the useless predator steps with these!👍🏻
Nice! The two don’t even compare. Greenlanes are super robust, you’ll love them
@@MikesGearGarage yea, I agree! I was impressed with their quality of the front bumper I ordered from them as well.👌🏻
wow! im about to do this immediately
This video sold me on it. I ordered it Tuesday from OK4WD since they’re running a great sale and they had them in stock, and it showed up mid day Friday. So far I’m super impressed with it.
Wish I was getting commission lol. Yeah it’s a rock solid platform. One year in and zero complaints here. Simple system that does what I need
Your video has been out a year. Can you give us an update and tell us how the Alu Cap is performing?
It’s great! No issues whatsoever. That included running a roof top tent, 270 awning, and two adults sleeping on top of it throughout the summer. Everything is still functioning as it should
Brown Amy Harris Kenneth Miller Jennifer
F that. I let the professionals to do it for me
To each their own
Your brake light will blink when use the turning signal.
I checked and it definitely doesn’t. Consult your wiring diagram for your specific truck model, tail lights aren’t all wired the same.
@@MikesGearGarageNot when you turn left, but it should blink when you turn right, unless you use a logic box that cancels the blinking or you use the CHMSL line from under the truck. That is why I'm waiting the logic box to arrive now.
I'm a new owner of trucks. I'm not aware of trucks on which the brake lights are wired differently from turning lights.
Well it is on the 3rd gen Tacoma. I just triple checked and they definitely don’t trigger each other and are all working independently. Neither right nor left trigger the 3rd brake light.
Very smart man
Love my C4 high clearance/swing out bumper. Got the hybrid bumper up front and C4 armor in between. Nice job.
Yeah it’s a rock solid choice. Looks great too. I was t boned in the back drivers side corner of it by some old lady who was texting and driving. Opened the front end of her Cadillac up like a can of sardines. My bumper just needed a little sand, paint, and you couldn’t even tell. 10/10 for C4
@@MikesGearGarage Ive been wondering what would happen if someone run up underneath me. If it’s not an SUV or truck, they’re gonna have a 35 maxxis mt in their lap… definitely rock solid.
Yeah she was only going about 20mph and so it pushed my truck sideways without frame damage and I think my rims/tires (33 general grabber a/t’s) ripped her front lower valance off while the bumper took off part of the hood and smoked her headlight. Pretty wild, but the bumper definitely protected the suspension components and axle
Gotta ask, your Princeton shirt, you know Conte's pizza right???
Absolutely! I like Nomad’s wood fired the best in town. But my favorite in the area has to be DeLorenzo’s in Robbinsville. So good
@@MikesGearGarage Yeah we've been to Nomads's but still the best we ever had is Conte's. Only thing we miss about moving out of N.J. Conte's Pizza, White House Subs in A.C. and White Castle.
@@nctacomaoutdoor I surf AC all the time and White House was always a pit stop on the way back
Good video, Just ordered these for my 2020 Tacoma and can't wait to get them on and be rid of the last piece of hideous chrome left on my truck. Totally agree with 'you get what you pay for' Wasn't going with some of the other brands the Tacoma sites are offering. Also thought about going with the TRD PRO lights but when I called Toyota they told me if the truck serial number does not match a PRO Tacoma they would not sell them to me.
I agree. Chrome on a small truck es no bueno
Most modern vehicles have a very efficient air intake from factory. I have found throttle body spacers help some vehicles. It does add torque across the RPM range. Did you test the spacer separately from the intake ? I always make 1 change at a time.
I probably should have but didn’t. Seeing as neither made a difference I can say there would have been no point in retrospect. I have had my eye on the Anderson engineering manifold spacer. Supposedly that helps to move the torque band lower, which is where these trucks need it.
Could you link this grill?
Here you go: amzn.to/3T98ypS
@@MikesGearGarage thank you!
No problem
Looks good. Think you could add a 4 way switch? For example: OFF-DRL(A)-DRL(W)-FLOOD
Hmm, yeah I would say it’s possible. The leads for the DRL are separate from the main bundle of wires, but do appear to use the wire bundles ground point. You would need a pretty specific switch for that but I’m sure you could make it happen. However that’s something I would definitely mock up in a setup outside of the vehicle first just to make sure it’s not going to accidentally cause some sort of electrical fire.
@@MikesGearGarage Found this on their website: Q: How does it switch from the White DRL to the amber DRL? A: This TrailBlazer Series comes with three light modes: the main light source, yellow DRL (Daytime Running Light), and white DRL. As a result, this 6.5-inch driving light has four wires at its end - one negative and three positive. After using the included conversion cable, you will find two extended wires, one yellow and one white. The yellow wire is for controlling the yellow DRL, and you can connect it to the positive terminal of the turn signal as a position light. The white wire is for controlling the white DRL, and you can connect it to the positive terminal of the daytime running light.
Yeah I would be careful to make sure that you don’t accidentally trigger both drls at the same time. You never know with budget lights lol
Very descriptive vid. Definitely looking forward to getting these. How are they holding up?
Thank you! They’re great. Zero signs of wear on them so far
Hey man nice video! I just did mine today👍 I also was wondering what front bumper are you running? It looks really nice I was in the market of getting one :)
Hey thank you! It’s CBI. It’s fine but not as stout as I had hoped. My rear bumper is C4 and I regret not going with them for the front too
Thanks for the tip! Applying the George Clooney/Danny Ocean voice “so how did you get the rock out of the passenger side drain???
lol excellent reference
I have never torqued a drain pan bolt ever. Useless in my opinion.
I think the torque spec exists just so that some caveman with an impact wrench doesn’t over do it and strip the threads off the reservoir
Great review! Can you sleep inside the canopy?
Thank you! I’m sure that you could. If you want to lock yourself in it, you’d have to go with some sort of replacement latches though. I’ve tried with the stock ones and there doesn’t appear to be any way to do so.
Owner’s manual says, especially on trucks with a full size spare tire, to include the spare tire in the rotation. When I measured, at the current rate of wearing the tread, I could easily reach 65,000 miles with still 2/32-inch to spare with my Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT tires doing a 5-tire rotation.
Nice! I would do the same but unfortunately the rim on my full size spare is busted and discontinued. Some old lady texting and driving drilled it last year
How often are you changing your oil?
Every 5k miles. I know that technically you can go longer with modern synthetics, but I want to take this thing to 500k miles lol
@@MikesGearGarage Quite a bit different than changing oil and filter in my 2008 SR5. I guess the Toyota engineers determined that this set up would be better than the 2nd gen. Thanks for the video.
It’s probably not lol. I’ve had to use a heat gun to get the filter cap off twice now. I’m about to switch it to aluminum and see if that helps
@@shinerlightman yea its def not. Older trucks were much simpler with filter on top, you could loosen it with hand even, no tools nothing.
yeah i just went with the OE replacement filter from them instead of an entire intake kit. Trying out the dry filter instead of oiled ones.
Yeah just stick with OE filters for engine longevity above all else. Unfortunately the only real way to get more power out of this engine is either a tune or supercharger/turbocharger
Why did you let some diptard from Autozone install your battery? 😂
He was really excited about it. Super nice guy, definitely first week on the job lol
What exactly do you mean when you say “the 9volt battery trick”
If you know, you know.
We don't talk about that 🤫
"Engines are hot" No you are
