Rules:
1. I not allowed to have any unit that is paired up land an attack at all, though I can pair up for other reasons such as AI manipulation, Shelter, or movement options.
2. All units must get married. This is to avoid the run from turning into a complete Ryoma sweep.
3. I am allowed infinite resources and an early chef's hat.
4. DLC, grind maps, and online battles are banned
5. As a personal challenge, I am going to try and avoid strats that abuse too much chokepoint stalling to make some maps, like chapter 7, just a little bit more interesting.

I see what you're saying, and at the very least the Trust Meter sounds like a great concept that would actually make me care about the Free Times and give a game with absolutely no replayability a ton. However, I don't think it's a strictly better version. The over the top aesthetic is so critical to establishing the identity of the series and allowing its more outlandish elements to work. I have an easier time immersing myself in the setting because of it. In the zany world of Danganronpa, of course teenage terrorists who worship a nihilistic gyaru and wear teddy bear masks were the foot soldiers of the apocalypse. So many things work in Danganronpa because the player knows from the outset that the game's world is exaggerated. In Distrust (the name for this beta version), things like the Ultimates just wouldn't work as well as they do in the game we got. Ironically, in a more dour world, I would take the idea of a high school that recruits stundents for their whacky talents from around the globe far less seriously. If it were released, Distrust couldn't just be "Danganronpa with a darker, scarier tone." It would have to be a fundamentally different story. And who knows, maybe the finished version of that story would have been better than the one we got, but I can say that slapping Distrust's tone on Danganronpa's plot would make both worse.
To be fair, the branching story sounds like a fucking development hell, even on the surface. As so many other failed promises in games. I probably would've liked it with more horror and less static, predictable story structure, but I think what we got was a fair balance with casual appeal. DR1 was my favourite because of the claustrophobic atmosphere as well. (Personally, I just disliked some anime elements and how over the top the Hope vs Despair theme was, but I can see the appeal)
The Trust/Distrust meter is just the health bar, it was never actually removed. Distrust was intended to have 3 chapters and 9 branching paths. The executions of Distrust were shown to be simple CG like with Mukuro and Chihiro. Kazuo Matsuzaki's execution was made after the cancellation of Distrust, because Spike forgot they own Twilight Syndrome and forced Kodaka to tone down the game so it become a generic VN, like post-trilogy Ace Attorney games. DR1 is the only game that focused on characters, because unlike SDR2/NDRV3's cast they aren't plot device with repetitive dialogues. It didn't require dating simulators such as FTE, School/Island Mode to expand on the characters, the alternate paths were more than enough to expand on them. Ever since DR2, the franchise was plagued with stupid twists, anime tropes, meta references and uninteresting characters who don't they belong to the series.
I love the danganronpa games as they are, but I really do feel like it's a concept that can just... do more, much more, there could be 53 danganronpa games and each could take very different directions and be entretaining. I always loved the more serious tone of Trigger Happy Havoc and agree with pretty much everything you said in the video. I think you'd love Danganronpa: Eden's Garden, it's a new fangame that really leans into the darker and pshycological elements and is just generally really really good, right now only the prologue and first chapter are out, but I'd say it's completely worth playing. Another fan project that captures that feeling is Danganronpa F: Shattered Hope. Altough I haven't seen the newer stuff, I was closely following it when the prologue came out and feel like it also captures that essence.

i've literally never seen level ups these bad outside of 0% growth runs. how many levels have you gotten with just 1 stat??? it's gotta be higher than 10 at this point.
watching this run through has been such an interesting exprience, as Pair up really does feel like the main thing people think about with Birthright, so doing the ggame without it is a big leap, but finding that it's possible and you can have fun with different types of builds was fun to watch throughout. Long time coming, but starting the new year by ending this series is a fitting way to do things.

these maps get so congested without defensive pair ups. this series truly demonstrates the importance of carpooling.
Fates is certainly the game of all time. You literally can do anything you want and it works.

rewatching this series now that the final episode is out...! i think the samurai/archer guard pair didn't switch to the archer because the samurai dealt 1 more damage than the archer?
this series has been fun to watch, i'm kind of sad it's over T-T congrats on finishing though !! this was a neat challenge to follow along with, i feel like i learned some new things about the game
This was kinda my first playthrough, I'd realized my mistake with the second or third go of Awakening but I repeated my mistake when I got Birthright. Though in my defence the Attack/Guard split made a difference
This was such a fun watch! You’ve taught me a lot about how to approach Fates in ways I never considered before, and I’ll definitely take some of what I’ve seen here into future playthroughs of Fates.
Nice conclusion to an awesome series! I was glad to see some of my favorite Hoshido characters on the final roster 👀

Wow its actually over This whole playthrough highlights so many quirks about this route and game in general, like how absurdly bulky pair up makes your units (I wouldn't doubt if sakura can solo the maps without healing with just corrin pair up) and how differently enemy stats and skills makes you play
Great video and it was a fun series to watch. I really like watching ‘Renewal’ + ‘Vantage’ Sakura dominate the late game battles. I found it especially funny when she would say “rest in peace” or “please forgive us” after completely destroying anyone she battled! Also, just wanted to say that your Nyx only play through inspired me to try my own version without DLC. In it, in Ch11 and every battle after it, only Nyx is allowed to equip weapons. I am currently on Ch18 after completing the ninja den, I’m gonna turn her into a general with a beast killer on the next map 😟 Wish me luck!

I managed to beat the last map on hard in one turn because the game was merciful enough to let me land a 46% hex rod and a 65% attack with Corrin. Good to know there are ways to one-turn it without chancey hit rates.

This is the map that fucked me up in the soullink ironman (because they gave me no good units or enough Rescue users for it lmao) - god I would have loved to have four rescue rods to kill Garon t1

I lowkey wish Danganronpa was a little darker. I mean yeah it’s great and all but it’s still a killing game. It had so much potential but for some reason the devs chose to put there so many random weird stuff. Just an opinion tho

I really think that if Danganronpa trilogy had been made like Zero Escape, then we would have got one of the best game trilogies.
I do feel the magic of danganronpa 1 is when playing it it feels like a visual novel with a twist. After that every other danganronpa game you play is just a danganronpa game which is why I always come back to the first one despite what better/worse the other ones did.
I also feel Distrust would be a fun game though I actually am pretty happy with Danganronpa so I'm not sure I'd trade one for another Still that trust meter concept would have been pretty peak
