    Why tf would you show a POS walfart schwinn as the bike that started BMX! that is just shameful dude, At 65 I seem to be the dinosaur in the room and maybe the last guy to ride a stingray in a BMX race at Saddleback on the expert track, Hardy anyone was racing the expert track, in fact, they \gave me 2ed in a qualifier, so they could have more than 4 riders for the main, Scott Breithaupt The man that organized the event was in my race, ya I did not finish that well, but I landed farther down the drop-off than anyone else! After the race and almost everyone was gone home, I was still there flying down the dropoff and some guy wanted to video us going over him at the drop, I have always wondered what happened to that footage. My good friend Sean (Shades) Ewing, or SE as I know him. was helping Scott get out of his hole, taking him to events, enabling him to realize that he was still relevant and loved by the BMX community, Sean may have been the last person to see him sober before he passed. rip TGF of BMX Scott Breithaupt

    Great documentary, thanks for sharing! Makes me miss my BMX so much. I am 52 now, and had an '84 GT Mach 1 back in the day. Took a lot of begging to get, finally convinced all my family to throw in on one Christmas present. We were definitely poor, so the $350 for the bike was a LOT of money, I felt so lucky to get it. I never raced an actual track, but there was a dirt track that kids had made in the woods by the local small airplane airport. It had some great jumps and turns, and provided more thrills than most tracks in that, sometimes you would get chased off by airport security, and sometimes chased by dogs. But most of the time it was just awesome riding, and afterwards you could sit and chill in broken down abandoned airplanes like Piper Cubs, etc. My daughter has a 24" aluminum frame Schwinn BMX, that she no longer uses, so I am gonna restore it and start riding again. I only wish I could get my GT back from my younger brother in Mississippi, though doubtful he still has it, was a LONG time ago when I gave it to him.

    I got into riding freestyle bikes when I was a kid in the 80's. I think I was 8 years old and had a huffy. I then eventually traded various stuff to other kids and got a redline. Then had a crap load of gt's, haro's, redlines, etc in the 90's. Last bmx flatland bike I had was a haro master. I had that bike from 1995 till 2012 when someone broke into my parents garage and stole it. I absolutely LOVED the way the old trick bikes looked like. I don't think there would be any chance in hell I'd have been riding these brand new trick bikes. They are all so bland and all of them basically look the same and are WAY too small to really ride. That said, I just bought a new 24 inch Haro Master. Gotta say, that old design looks WAY better than these new bikes.

    • @LearnBMXRacing
      @LearnBMXRacing หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suspect the "new look" is just teenage rebellion. You know, freestyle bikes used to be fluroescent and bright, so the way to be defiant and rebellious is to do the opposite and make them all matte and bland. But it's funny that BMX race bikes are still beautiful and colorful.

    • @thorodin3631
      @thorodin3631 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LearnBMXRacing ya I thought the same. about bmx race bikes. its interesting that the race bikes still have flair. I don't know about the teenage rebellion thing though. I just mean, if they all look the same, what are they rebelling against then? would be the same with music. back in the 80's/early to mid 90's, metal was all about rebellion. bands like slayer or megadeth or pantera, etc, if you read their lyrics, a LOT of what they wrote was rebelling against the system. A lot of it was political. If all the bands all sounded the same and had the same lyrics, then what would anyone rebel against because its all the same thing? you know what I mean? If I were a teen today and riding bmx, I think I would probably get an 80's based bike to be different than what everyone else has now. Either that or purposely paint my bike different. Idk, when I was a kid, my bikes were never stock. They were always an amalgamation of a crap load of different bikes. I wanted my bikes to look different than what all the other kids had. So for instance, my haro master had dyno pretzel handlebars, a hutch pentagram sprocket, redline 6 bolt neck/stem, etc. My dad was a mechanic and some of the bikes I'd get needed to be painted so I'd sandblast the frame and paint them colors you wouldn't normally see. So for instance, I'd 2 tone them. I had a haro that I painted black and pink (kinda in a homage to the pink gt's but made it a little different). I just mean, you'd think at least one of these big bmx companies would do something to differentiate themselves from the pack, but when I go look up brand new bmx bikes, they pretty much all look the same. same top tubes, same color schemes, etc. Idk, if todays youth of rebellion is all looking the same, idk if I would have even gotten into bmx bikes if I were a teen now because there isn't anything different. You know what I mean? hope I'm making sense here.

    So to correct the thing about the seat angled up on freestyle bikes for me and a lot of others it is because for a few reasons it makes it easier to grab the seat in certain tricks it sucks to land on an angled up seat but it also helps you from getting stuck on it as well

    As kids we used to jump our bikes on home made ramps and ride on trails on our bikes. I had a Stingray that I had modified with a ten seed seat. My buddy had Mongoose with the metal mag wheels. Years later my brother got into freestyle and flatland and got pretty good. He built a quarter-pipe in our back yard and his friend had a half- pipe that they built at his house. He went on to specialize in flatland tricks and would dazzle our neighborhood with his skills. My oldest son did dirt jumping for years before he got into skateboarding. So it ran in the family. I still have a picture up on FB where my friend Chris and I are shaking hands at the top of duel endos. This was a nice stroll down memory lane.

    Wow love your words I have a story to say. I started to race BMX at the age of 7 years old in 1976 I went from novice all the way to Pro I was even sponsored by Major bicycle company out of Pompano Beach Florida, we all know who that is anyway let's fast forward a bit at the age of 30 I took a nasty fall. And I was rushed to the hospital so the downward spiral started, I stopped racing BMX I sold all the bicycles and I put all the memorabilia away but I still rode bicycle I started trail riding with all the adults now let's fast forward a bit more my son who is 10 years old I was one day watching him ride a bicycle and he was really good at it and he was watching me pop Willie's and do all kinds of tricks and he wanted to learn how to do all the tricks and I told him boy learn how to ride very well first LOL then his bike got stolen happens to be that one day he asked my wife where was all my BMX memorabilia my wife did not want to take it out because it made me a bit better of what my past was and how good I was at the time but he wanted to see so my wife took out my old Jersey and all my pictures and everything and the kids said he wanted to do the same thing I did so the funny story is I told him let's go to the local track and see what it's about if you like it I'll think about it while the kids loved it very much he even asked one of the guys there that was racing who was over 20 years old if you could ride his bike and the guy said yes go ahead my son didn't ask me to either build him a bike or purchase a professional BMX race bike funny thing is that today right now literally 3 hours ago not only that I buy him a professional BMX racing 20-in but I also bought one for myself and I'm getting back on the track I'm 54 years old today so whoever says that they're very old not in good health to do what they really have wanted to do in the past well guess what go ahead and do it today and it'll be a memory for tomorrow because it's funny my life is my career is in law enforcement I started my career when I was 21 and at the age of 43 I got very sick with a very bad case of pneumonia and they gave me 6 days to live and the day of my birthday I was released from the hospital at 44 and the doctor said happy birthday you're lucky to be alive but think about quitting law enforcement because you'll never be the same and my words to him was hell no I'm going back to work so this Thursday not only am I taking my son for his first BMX race but it'll be my first time 24 years later so this former pro Rider is even going to start as a novice again so whoever is contemplating BMX do it you'll enjoy it can you create another memory for tomorrow

    I've only used plastic/composite pedals on my freestyle bike in the 80s. Nobody racing used them, for sure. But I've noticed that modern composites are of far better quality. Are there any adult racers using them these days that you know of?

    • @LearnBMXRacing
      @LearnBMXRacing 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pedal-slip is the big issue with plastic pedals. Even when a racer uses plastic/composite pedal, the pedal usually has metal pins/cleats. It's just way too easy to slip a pedal if your shoes aren't gripping into metal pins.

    • @roberthunter5119
      @roberthunter5119 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LearnBMXRacing thanks for the response. Yeah, I definitely get that plastic/composite pedals are slippy. I wondered if those with the cleats were used in racing. I thought about picking up some Chesters, but feared they may not hold up to the rigors of racing.
