Kumite Waza I-VIII -- Solo Training
All Kumite Waza (I-VIII) done solo, left and right sides. This is a good way to train the waza through repetition for developing technique, speed, etc. The techniques are:
1.) Uraken, Gyaku Zuki
2.) Jodan Gyaku Zuki, Ashi Barai, Chudan Gyaku Zuki
3.) Uraken, Mawashi Geri simultaneously, Chudan Gyaku Zuki
4.) Yama-Zuki
5.) Jodan Gyaku Zuki, step immediately into Chudan Gyaku Zuki
6.) Mae Geri, Mawashi Geri (w/ same leg), Jodan Age Uke , Age Zuki (uppercut)
7.) Mae Geri, Chudan Oi Zuki, Shotei as you step into Uraken
8.) Jodan Gyaku Zuki, shift 45 deg. into Kizame/ Oi Zuki

2.) Jodan Gyaku Zuki, Ashi Barai, Chudan Gyaku Zuki

Kumite Waza VIII

Basically the opposite of Kumite Waza I, this short punching combination requires relaxation and good footwork in order to create angles.
Kumite Waza VII

This is an excellent combination to develop kicking and punching with the same side. Note the similarity to Pinan (Heian) Yon Dan kata.
Kumite Waza VI

Using Mae Geri immediately followed by Mawashi Geri with the same leg to begin, this combination is an excellent method to train kicking skills, or to see if you have them.
Kumite Waza V

Gyaku Zuki (Reverse Punch) both high and low make up this waza. This is a favorite of my Sensei. Correct timing makes all the difference when building coordination with this seemingly simple technique.

Using uraken and mawashi geri simultaneously, this is a strong attack that can take away your opponent's focus, putting them on the defensive. Pay attention to the use of the backfist.
Kumite Waza II

Here the punch sets up the opponent for a sweep (ashi-barai) and a second punch. As with all seemingly "basic" techniques, there is more than meets the eye. Practice is needed to set up the timing here.

I think you are asking about the lineage of the kata (?). As far as I know, Chojun Miyagi (the founder of Goju-Ryu) created the Gekisai kata. He also trained with Kenwa Mabuni (the founder of Shito-Ryu). Mabuni taught Kuniba, Soke, although Ryusei Tomoyori (a senior student of Mabuni) taught Kuniba, Soke a great deal also. I am guessing that is where these kata come from.

The English translation is "mountain punch". I have also seen "u-punch". I guess this is because of the shape of the arms in the technique...

The Gichin Funakoshi style is very bad and ineffective in real combat, and in a real confrontation it is of no use😢😂

This is from a video that Kuniba, Soke and other senior Shihan and Sensei put together in the 1980's. The title of the video is "Action Karate", I think.

I recently received a question from Matthew Wood about the number of blocks (5) in this kata. They are: Gedan Barai, Nino Ude Uke ( inner forearm block--this is the one you may not be seeing which follows Gedan Barai), Yoko Uke, Yoko Uchi, Jodan Age Uke. Hope this helps. For some reason I was unable to reply directly to your question.

When you are using naihanchi techniques, actually you are not facing the opponent but you are moving around to his side... The misconception that is taught is that the enemy is in font of you. You are actually getting your self at the side of the enemy and attacking from angles of 45 degrees or from or where you are at the back of the enemy...the attacks at never delivered with the enemy facing you directly... Oss! 🥋✌️
