How Efficient Is My Golf R's "Race Mode"?
After doing testing the fuel economy in both eco and normal mode in the previous video, it's only right for me to see how the Golf R performs in RACE mode! I've never driven this much in race mode before and although it takes a little getting used to for day to day commutes, it's so much fun! Truly a testament to the performance potential for this platform! I cant wait for us to dive deeper into this platform and make this car more of a weapon later this year!

Is The Golf R's "Eco Mode" A Lie?
มุมมอง 4.8K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today I did my first experiment with my Golf R! Since this car is my daily, I would always drive on eco mode to try to get the best fuel economy until I started to see some people saying that eco mode is actually worse than other modes. So in this video, we put that to the test to see which mode is better for fuel economy! This was a different type of video that took quite a while to film, but ...

Looks we have encountered our first real problem with the Golf R. Not surprised but not too worried either, to be honest. In this video, I tried a few different ways to diagnose the issue and find the root of the problem. I still feel like the car is ugly but I think it's cool that Nissan did such a project I mean you could consider this project Frankenstein
Damn 10L/100km that’s shocking.
For me in an 18 R 7.5 Stage 1 Galano in eco comfort and normal modes there’s no difference what’s so ever. I still get it as low as 6-7L/100km in race mode it’s around 12L and still get 500km to a tank
Blk dud in a golf r is crazy
This guy js wasting money on gas just to get subscribers, lol.
I’m just having fun :)
Let’s gooo we in canadaaaaa💪🏽i’m in ontario as well i have a 2019 GTI
Is it tuned? or stock ecu/tcu?
Tuned!
Help a brother out....$87 is one of the reasons I went with a GTI...average 10L per 100 km and tuned to 350hp, highway is closer to 6.5L/100 km. But that R sounds so sweet.
Only 370 hp? Stage 1 23 R is 272 kw
Broo the way u drive the car u will not have a good fuel effiency for effiencienncy stick to 2k rpm everything above will suck you tank dry
I just wanted to see how much fuel the car would use in race mode versus the other modes. I promise I don’t drive like this all the time haha
@ hahahahha😂😂 its all love bro. Enjoy the car the g7R is a amazing car
Great video man, sure you know, but you can also click the gear stick towards you to have the DSG in normal drive whilst keeping the sound, throttle response etc from race mode. This is what I do on my GTI so it isn't so high in the rev range all the time :)
Winter tire size+setup?
Not too sure the specs of the wheels but the tires are Michelin X-Ice 225/45/17
Great video!
Amazing video!! Thank you. Very in depth
Appreciate it, thanks for watching!
awesome test once again! Thanks for doing it! Im glad that for the test's purposes you stuck to letting the DSG shift itself, but totally agree that for normal-driving situations in Race mode, it's best with the paddles. My commute to work is Normal mode and Drive leaving my neighborhood (for the quiet exhaust), then once I get on the main roads I flip it to Race and Manual with paddles. It's just so much more engaging/ fun of an experience 🙂
Thanks man! I might be following in your footsteps from now on 😂
Looks like fuel is on par with Australia cost wise. Our 98oct which is your 93 octane is $1.75 a litre at the moment. And I subscribed!
Don’t know where in Australia 1.75 litre currently 2.40
@ Melbourne is pretty cheap at the moment, apco..which uses shell is $1.80 atm
Good test! I'm sure race mode is meant to be the mode where you're actively having fun on those curve roads & corners, so it makes sense it would end up using a little more fuel since your revs are much higher with the transmission eager to downshift.
I prefer the one you originally had for my car it’s cheap looks good and feels great in hand maybe you needed to clean yours or it was just a bad example of one
So it's basically the hellcat of the 20th century
best vid so far love the ending 🔥🔥
my fuel economy is 18-20 rn 😥
Holyyyyy
love the video's hyped to see the content you drop this year
omg he are clueless that he killing his own engine* drive on mode normal or sport* not the mention he drive eco mode on winter it's stup.. LUL i don't give sh!t about gasoil i prefer over good healty engine that all... the real one know what i mean*
Never claimed to know anything, this channel is all about me learning more about cars, so yes I may do things that are wrong to some people or make mistakes but that’s all part of the learning process. All help and advice is appreciated 🤝
@@SCVRLETT no im messaging ppl not do eco mode some gonna read my msg that it* mostly don't know that mode come out because bruxel force to constructor to make it similarity like star & stop everyone don't use that thing cuz it's will break ur engine same way for eco mode* i know cuz i live near germany in aslace "France" and also i suggest u to use ravenol* that what all germany use it on his 7R for daily drive there no better oil* 🤝🤝🤝
Eco mode on the R works when coasting (letting off the gas) the revs will drop to 1200rpm saving fuel.
Boosts late on eco mode, so pretty much ur driving off boost so saving petrol
I drove it on ECO from full tank to almost empty and did almost 600km (373 miles)
I had an MK7 Golf R, stage 1 tuned. The 2016 car did not have ECO mode, just normal mode and sporting modes. Also, only had 6 gears with the DSG. I was getting 600km to 650km easily!! I don't why yours is so bad. And 600km was in winter, I'm in Toronto...
he has larger injectors which worsens fuel economy. he's also stage 3 tuned
MY juke is ugly
Canada? You used kms and litres.
Yessir
I have a Acura Integra 96 can someone take a pic of the wire on the back of the obd mine is just unpin laying under my dash.
Im running a stage 3 golf r. 502hp to the crank but i can get 600km to a tank in race mode. Saying that its a manual so its more efficient.
Whats the set up and tune? I really think I need to get mine properly tuned so it runs better. I can just tell it’s using more fuel than needed
@@SCVRLETT I've a Littco L500 turbo and stage 3 tune, loba hpfp, ecotune low pressure pump, revo intercooler and boost pipes, sachs clutch, racingline r600 intake with turbo elbow, turbo muffler delete, apr short shit kit, apr coil packs, coolerworx shifter
DSG is more efficient. Back in the day manuals were more efficient, but that's not longer the case... Google it, you'll see.
And who the f drives a golf r in eco mode lol
him and comments LUL they don't realise it they killing his own engine*
So i should be happy with my mk7 in comfort/race all the time in town stays around 12L/100km 😂😂
91 Octane in a GOLF R? Surley that's gonna cause some engine damage! VW Reccommend 98 for GTI/R and 95 for everything ekse.
different octane rating in north america
the warning lights are really self inflicted and speak nothing to the reliability of the Golf R ive had a stock one for 5 years now never seen any warning lights whats so ever its been a turn key experience
my 7R is tuned to 400hp and on eco mode in a 70kmh commute for 25km, I have achieved no lie 6.7l/100 on the way home
What’s the set up and tune?
@SCVRLETT stage 2 + custom tune all IE parts
i managed to get 8.56 L/100km or 33 UK MPG on a trip.
Use cruise control, you will win km :)
One thing that is missing or I am not sure in the video, as it seems you put more highway mileage when doing the normal mode run. Maybe more city run for the eco mode causing it poorer on gas?
I did almost the same highway km in eco mode but I didn’t get to film that part. While in normal mode, I remembered to properly document when I was on the highway so maybe that’s why it seems that way. That’s my bad for sure
Looking for one at the moment
Why is the car consuming so much? My Seat Leon Cupra (ST) is way heavier, bigger, has also awd and does 6.4l on big roads, on 19 inch too. Now on Cold weather it will do 7-8
I truly think it needs a better tune
@@SCVRLETT Your car is tuned? Mine isn't, maybe that explains it. My Car is running at 320 (300 on paper), soon 370 though, more my turbo won't like
@ I assume my car is tuned based on the extent of modifications done when I bought the car. Will definitely be making a video about diving more into this and getting it tuned properly so I runs better
@@SCVRLETT Get it to a good tuner with a dyno > Dyno it > let him do the magic. These Engines should run 370bhp with Stock Turbo and actually consume less than before. Also it will be plenty of power, trust me.
@ 100% agree and most definitely will go that route. I know these cars have great potential so i definitely want to get that done so i can make the car more fun and dailyable at the same time!
Now try race mode like I said last video
@13:10 get that sponsor my brudda💯🤘
love the experiment! Well done! You're totally right that Eco mode works best once you're on the highway and cruising. Around town I can't do it lol. The Eco Mode shift logic's strategy of keeping the RPMs as low as possible and the constant sensation that the engine is struggling to go from such low RPMs gives me anxiety, lol. Mine just stays in Normal or Race modes, and maybe 95% of the time I'm shifting with the paddles. Rarely in Automatic mode. Keep up the great work!
eco mode = right foot
don't do it if u car ur engine reability* germany laught a$$ about ppl using eco mode* is for EU who forced them to do and they also said don't ever use eco mode* same way for stop & play car same BS thing*
Your R uses too much fuel, on mine I get 650 to 700km at 7.7-8.7L on normal mode
I agree. I do want to preface that it has a bunch of modifications accompanied with the colder weather right now but I do feel it needs a better tune. I can tell it’s using a lot more fuel than it should for regular driving.
@SCVRLETT you gotta remember, you need a custom tune. You have mpi and all that stuff which is causing more fuel being dump.
@@SCVRLETTif I was you I wouldn't be putting 91 at all. I would be putting 94 or 93 until you get a custom tune. Am pretty sure you have a upgraded lpfp also. Someone was definitely pushing some power before they traded the car in.
@ I had a local VW performance shop check for the lpfp last year while doing some other stuff and they said it doesn’t have one. Maybe the guy took that out but I also doubt it considering he left all the other mods. If 93 or 94 is best for the car until I get a proper tune, I’ll definitely switch. As far as I know it was previously tuned on APR stage 1 91 octane (I called Apr and they confirmed) which is why I have been using 91
@@SCVRLETT Okay makes sense. It's kinda weird he left the mpi inside. It's definitely not helping your fuel consumption. Do you have an upgraded turbo?
I keep mine in comfort mode the majority of the time (crappy roads) and it is already pretty efficient. I would even say it prioritizes economy too much as it upshifts through the gears quickly and can be very sluggish when you actually need to get on the throttle. Eco mode, imo, is definitely more suited for highway driving as it will disengage the clutches when coasting.
do you want a VW tuner i know a guy near you (ps like the flow of the video editing is getting better )
Sure! Gonna look into getting a better tune next year. Also appreciate it, trying to improve on the edits and video concepts as much as I can
Fire
Also, the best way to warm up the car according to VW is starting the car, letting the RPMs drop then driving the car softly (under 2k RPM) until its up to temps. The temp on the gauge cluster is your coolant gauge and it will heat up quickly if you have the Heat/AC off for the first couple minutes of your drive. Once your oil is above 85"c youll be good to go. Idling your car (especially turboed cars) is not good at all and it will take forever to heatup the car causing more wear (because the engine is cold)
Thank you so much for this, I had no idea. This is my first turbo car so it’s good to know the proper way of going about this. Will switch things up for sure!
@@SCVRLETTall you need to remember. Just start and drive away after 10 seconds. Then just drive it like granny for first 10 minutes. Then 10 minutes more normal. And the gradually build up how you want.
